good evening on this sunday night. the countdown is on until the crucial florida primary. at stake, the biggest prize so far for the republican candidates. take a look at the latest numbers. mitt romney pulling ahead if a two-man race surging 15 points ahead of newt gingrich there and in these fast-paced final hours both gingrich and romney are in full-out attack and begin with jonathan karl in orlando. >> reporter: newt gingrich may be sliding in the polls here, but he attracted an overflow crowd today at the village's town center in central florida. gingrich is trying to climb back with some of his harshest words yet for mitt romney. >> and i believe the republican party will not nominate a pro-abortion, pro-gun control, pro-tax increase moderate from massachusetts, and i think they will not nominate somebody who raises millions from wall street to run ads that are false. >> reporter: for his part romney campaigning in naples today essentially called gingrich a sore loser. >> he's not on tv this morning going from station to station complaining about what he thinks were the reasons he's had difficulty here in florida. i think for each of us, if we fail somewhere, if we fail in a debate or we fail to get the support of people, it's time to look in the mirror. >> reporter: but the story of this campaign in florida is largely a story of big money and nasty ads. it started with romney who launched this -- >> newt has a ton of baggage. >> reporter: his first attack ad in florida less than 48 hours after losing the primary in south carolina. since then romney and a pro-romney super pac have pummeled gingrich with nearly $14 million worth of attack ads in florida. most recently the controversial ad featuring tom brokaw. >> newt gingrich came to power after all preaching a higher standard in american politics. >> reporter: nbc wants that ad pulled down, but the romney campaign has refused. all told, romney and his supporters have spent more than four times as much on television ads in florida as gingrich and his supporters. >> that is pretty clear if you look at the volume of ads, i have an opponent who has money power, and we need people power to offset money power. >> surprise, surprise. >> reporter: last night gingrich won an endorsement from herman cain that he hopes will bring him some of that people power. herman cain will be out campaigning with gingrich tomorrow but one of gingrich's biggest problems, one of the real factors in his sliding poll numbers is a lack of support among women. in the latest poll out today, romney has a 21-point lead over gingrich among republican women in florida. david? >> all right, jon karl, see you in florida tomorrow. i want to bring in rick klein and, rick, while the florida polling shows romney pulling way ahead we did hear newt gingrich on abc's "this week" saying he is still ahead in national polling and makes this argument. i'd love your reaction. >> we tried in 1996 and he lost, we tried a moderate in 2008, he lost. hard to take romney care and obama care and have a debate and have the republican win that debate. you need to have a conservative who is a very big distance away from obama because you've got to have the space so that, in fact, you can communicate with the american people. >> rick, you literally have a candidate drawing the battle lines beyond florida. how important is florida, firsthand, and is newt gingrich already getting ready for what's beyond it. >> florida is critical. the most important state right now for mitt romney but it is turning against newt gingrich and it's happening pretty quickly. he notes that mitt romney is stronger in some of the states that follow but the only reason that any of this is happening is this relentless, vicious attack by romney on gingrich. so here is the critical thing to know about this week. the republican party is actually poised to take a big step tow d towards settling on a nominee but is taking a big step backwards when it comes to being happy with that nominee. there is serious bad blood that could make the primary fight last a lot longer even as romney looks stronger than ever. >> a lot of questions about these attacks going back and forth between romney and gingrich and whether or not they'll hurt the republican nominee in the eventual race against the president. >> that's right. a lot of the same arguments that president obama is poised to use in the fall are getting aired out right now. the conventional wisdom around this, these things don't hurt until they start to really hurt and that's the problem right now is that if we have an extended primary campaign where both sides, the establishment and anti-establishment side is going after each other it is a problem. >> rick klein, thank you. republican candidate rick santorum meanwhile, is far from florida back home in pennsylvania tonight at the hospital bedside of his youngest daughter bella. as david kerley tells us it is just the latest health scare for her and her parents. >> reporter: 3-year-old bella has already defied the odds surviving with a genetic disorder that kills most children before their first birthday. >> it's stressful. >> reporter: in november riding between campaign events santorum told us this is what he feared. >> we're dealing with a girl who has a cold killer. >> reporter: the santorum campaign made a video and the former senator has talked openly and emotionally about his seventh and youngest child. >> they told us that she had a fatal condition and was going to die. she had a condition called trisomy 18, which is like down syndrome. >> reporter: the santorums took bella home and have had their scares. >> i was the guy that held everything together, and it was a lie. it was a lie. i decided that the best thing i could do was to treat her differently and not love her like i did because it wouldn't hurt as much if i lost her. >> reporter: with santorum in philadelphia with bella, daughter elizabeth filled in at florida campaign events today. >> right now family comes first. being a dad and being a husband right now. >> reporter: daughters say pneumonia for a child with her condition is serious. >> an infection particularly if it gets set in can sometimes move faster than it would in someone else. ♪ >> look at that. the love that she emits and it's clear to me that we're the disabled ones, not her. she's got it right. >> reporter: so when will santorum return to the campaign trail? his daughter elizabeth at those florida campaign stops today said he will be back as soon as he can. but, david, rick santorum is trailing a distant third in the latest polls out of florida. >> all right, david kerley tonight from our washington bure low, david, thank you. back in florida tonight, police are meanwhile, investigating a string of fiery highway crashes in the early morning hours today that took a deadly toll on a busy interstate there. at least ten people were killed and 18 injured when cars and trucks slammed into each other on both sides of interstate 75 near gainesville. tonight the focus is on haze and smoke so thick the drivers were blinded. here's abc's mohamed lila. >> reporter: witnesses say it looked like a war zone. burned out rigs, cars crumpled and a mass of twisted, mangled metal. it happened around 4:00 a.m., the debris scattering along a mile-long stretch of i-75. by the time emergency crews survived the only way they could find victims was to listen for their screams. the blinding fix of fog and spoke from a nearby brush fire making it impossible to see. >> the visibility was reported to be near zero at the time. i mean you're not going to be able to see the car in front of you even if they're five feet in front of you. >> reporter: fog-related collisions is among the most deadly. just last month one in new orleans left two people dead and 2 hurt. what should you do if you're stuck driving in very low visibility? experts say the first thing to do is to slow down. number two, if you do have to stop make sure you pull over as far off the side of the highway as you can. and, number three, no matter what you do, never stop in moving traffic. in florida, today, police had originally closed the highway because of low visibility but decided to re-open it a few hours later. that's when the collisions occurred. meteorologist jeff smith of wabc says it's a reminder of how quickly conditions can change. >> it was really a perfect storm to cause reduced visibility. you had smoke from the wildfires, which puts particles in the atmosphere and just enough moisture for water to condense around it and cause fog. >> reporter: several remain in serious condition and hospital officials say the death toll could rise. muhammad lila, abc news. >> we'll turn overseas to iran's nuclear program under an intense mike scone. top weapon inspectors have arrived for a three-day tour of nuclear facilities and as tensions rice tehran is preparing to cut off crude oil sales warning that that could send oil prices upward. meantime, in syria tonight it's been a day of spiraling violence there with the death toll climbing as the syrian military moves in. anti-government protesters would took to the streets were met by troops and tanks trying to crush the latest uprising. at least 100 people have been killed in the fierce weekend battles there. tonight we're getting our clearest view yet from underwater nearly two weeks after that cruise ship ran aground as diving teams face another huge hurdle. here's abc's jeffrey kofman now. >> reporter: the image mas show a modern-day "titanic" dishes caught in a net on the sea bottom mattresses, clothes, even a black shoe. haunting new pictures will be on eye-popping numbers as facebook goes public. the company preparing for the first time to sell shares and trish regan, trish, always great to have you on the broadcast. >> good evening. >> you've been digging into the numbers. really something. >> we're talking about a company that could be worth as much as $100 billion and just to put that in perspective, it would make it almost as large as company like mcdonald's. you have about 1,000 facebook employees out there who own shares in the company. they'll become millionaires basically overnight and you've got the founder, let's not forget about mark zuckerberg who will become the 23rd richest person on the planet, 27 years old. he will be worth about $20 billion. >> not bad, 23rd richest but are to the average american investor occupy protesters there. almost 400 demonstrators were arrested in clashes with police late saturday and dozens of people broke into city hall burring an american flag and vandalizing the building smashing glass and spray minuting graffiti. next to a major mix-up by a college, an error that dashed the hopes of dozens. vassar college mistakenly told 76 early decision hopefuls that they had been
