National convention getting under way. Four members of the trump family, including the president and First Lady Melania Trump, shell speak this evening. The First Time Ever from the rose garden during a convention. And secretary of state mike pompeo under fire tonight for his unprecedented appearance tonight, also a first at a convention. News on the coronavirus tonight. The new report. Researchers on how one conference in the northeast attended by fewer than 200 people led to an estimated 20,000 cases, they say, in boston alone. We have news on potential vaccines tonight. Dr. Anthony fauci warning against rushing out a vaccine before its proven safe and effective. The chopper pilot killed in a crash while battling the wildfires in the west. Conducting bucket drops at the time. Jerry falwell jr. Resigning tonight. One of President Trumps most powerful evangelical supporters, stepping down as head of Liberty University. What hes now saying tight about the sex scandal involving his wife and a young man that they allegedly all met when he was a miami pool boy. The worlds fastest man revealing hes tested positive for covid19. And america strong tonight. We cannot forget the work of the firefighters. Good evening. Its great to have you with us here on a very busy tuesday night. And we bght. And we begin tonight with that major hurricane threat. Forecasters say what could be a major category 3 hurricane is about to hit the u. S. More than a half Million People ordered to evacuate in texas and in louisiana. Tonight, hurricane laura is mexicocted to slam ashore f as that cat 3. 115mileanhour winds. The urgent call tonight to leave galveston, causing very slowmoving traffic. Families all going one way to get out. A line of cars heading out of businesses areing do and i n t ofarms way. Inewrlea g, too. 15 years after katrina now, and the idea of a category 3 hurricane, of course, is very unsettling. Laura has already killed at least 23 people in the caribbean on its path. Lets get right to rob marciano, leading us off with the latest track of this hurricane. Rob is in lake charles, louisiana, tonight, for us. Hey, rob. Reporter good evening, david. This storm is moving into a part of the gulf of mexico that is ripe for strengthening. Its going to have two big impacts. That is destructive winds and lifethreatening storm surge well inland. We sit 30 miles from the coast here at lake charles and obviously surrounded by water. Well see a water rise of over ten feet, potentially north of interstate 10. Look at all the alerts for storm surge. Over 500 miles of coastline and some of that storm surge could come well inland, as i mentioned. 9 to 13 feet here in southwest louisiana. 6 to 9 feet including galveston and getting into southern parts of houston and all the way into new orleans, as well. Hurricane warnings up that do include houston, down i10 through the golden triangle, lake charles and over towards lafayette. And heres that storm thats gathering strength and growing in the gulf of mexico, about 450 miles from where i stand right now and forecast to strengthen during the day tomorrow. Gathering to a category 2 and then eventually a category 3 storm, making landfall somewhere along the texas louisiana border tomorrow night and bringing those destructive winds well inland, all the way to shreveport. Houston, dangerously close to that track. Any jog to the left is going to be devastating for that dense population and folks around there and far inland could be without power for days if not weeks. Listen to your local authorities. If they are telling you to get out, do so quickly. David . We are thinking of everyone there from houston to new orleans and of you, rob, and the team. Stay safe. And tonight, as laura approaches, there are states of emergency in texas and louisiana, including houston, of course, the nations fourthlargest city with 7 Million People living there. Along the coast, they are bracing for a potentially deadly storm surge, as rob said. But this hurricane is also expected to have an impact far inland, as well. Abcs marcus moore in galveston on that part of the story tonight. Reporter time is quickly running out tonight for thousands of families along the gulf coast to board up, pack up and get out. We are seeing a very long and slow line of traffic coming away from galveston island. Reporter hurricane laura, a powerful storm plotting an uncertain course. Take a look, this is the line to get onto the bolivar ferry. Reporter many here remembering the chaotic evacuation in 2005 ahead of hurricane rita. It caused massive gridlock. Most of the storms deaths were from the evacuation itself. Coastal areas are bracing for up to a 13foot storm surge and 115 mileanhour winds. We dont have the resources to go doortodoor and pull people out of their homes and have no intention of doing that. Once it gets past category 2, with the surge issues, theres no way im going to take that chance. Just grab our dogs and our family and go. Reporter in galveston, more than 50 residents of this nursing home evacuated with two weeks worth of supplies. With the pandemic, we were required to do two buses and half the size. Reporter any movement in lauras track could take it right over houston. The city hardhit by covid19, forcing officials to change how they shelter families. The shelters that we are going to set up will still follow the covid protocols. Well take peoples temperatures. People still have to be socially distanced. Reporter in louisiana, where katrina made landfall nearly 15 years ago, officials watching that track, too, hoping families remember the storms devastating blow. You dont get a chance to leave once those waves start coming ashore. So hopefully everybody will take the warnings seriously. Lets hope so. Lets get right to marcus tonight, live from the beach there in galveston. And marcus, youre under a hurricane watch there and you were just telling us theyve now closed the port . Reporter david, that port is a key route for commercial boats and also shipping containers. And here on the island, officials are hoping people heed the warnings and that they will evacuate by tomorrow morning at the absolute latest, because theres concern this storm might not make its northerly turn soon enough and it could potentially take aim at galveston. David . Marcus moore, thanks to you and rob marciano tonight. And we turn to the other news this evening, the Police Shooting of jacob blake in wisconsin. Tonight, his family says he was shot seven times and that hes now paralyzed from the waist down. The country has now seen that video of the black father shot by an officer, his three young sons in the backseat. It was his family revealing the news that hes paralyzed from the waist down during an emotional News Conference today. And overnight, protesters faced off against police. The family with a message for those protesters. And tonight, the governor of wisconsin has now declared a state of emergency. Heres abcs alex perez from the scene again tonight. Reporter tonight, anger boiling over in kenosha, wisconsin, over the Police Shooting of jacob blake. Protesters ignoring a curfew last night with outrage in the streets. Storming businesses, swinging baseball bats, setting buildings on fire and igniting trucks and cars. Police responding with tear gas and pepper spray. The National Guard trying to enforce order. Tensions reaching a fever pitch. Get the [ bleep ] away from these businesses. Reporter blakes mother making an emotional plea for peaceful protests. Do Jacob Justice on this level and examine your hearts. To all of the Police Officers, im praying for you and your families. Reporter now new video emerging showing a different angle just moments before blake was riddled with bullets. He appears to be struggling on the ground with police, before getting up and walking to open his car door, when one of the officers opens fire. His three children inside watching. All my grandson ask, repeatedly, is, why did the police shoot my daddy in the back . Reporter tonight, blake is in the hospital. His Attorney Says hes paralyzed from the waist down and it will take a miracle for him to walk again. They shot my son seven times. Seven times. Like he didnt matter. But my son matters. Reporter the officers now under investigation. The Kenosha Police do not wear body cameras. Justice will be served. People will be held responsible for their actions and we will know the truth. Reporter the shooting causing more frustration. Marchers taking to the streets in cities across the country. Nba star lebron james expressing the anger of many. We are scared as black people in america. Black men, black women, black kids, we are we are terrified. Reporter david, the doj confirmed today they are working on this case. Local investigators have 30 days to present their findings to the prosecutor here. Blakes family is calling for the officers involved to be fired immediately and held accountable. David . All right, alex perez in kenosha, wisconsin, again tonight. Alex, thank you. And tonight brings night two of the Republican National convention now getting under way. Tonight, four members of the trump family will speak, that includes President Trump. But it will be First Lady Melania Trump who, for the First Time Ever during a convention, will address the country from the rose garden. And secretary of state mike pompeo is drawing criticism for his unprecedented appearance tonight. Heres our chief White House Correspondent jonathan karl. Reporter tonight, the normally lowkey first lady steps into the political spotlight, speaking from the rose garden she helped redesign. Her advisers say the speech will be positive and forwardlooking. A stark contrast from what we heard on night one. The tone was set early on by the st. Louis couple who brandished weapons at protesters marching by their home in june. No matter where you live, your family will not be safe in the radical democrats america. Reporter it was an ominous message echoed loudly by kimberly guilfoyle, former fox news host and girlfriend of donald trump jr. And the exwife of the current democratic governor of california. Dont let them destroy your families, your lives and your future. Dont let them kill future generations because they told you and brainwash you and fed you lies that you arent good enough. Reporter a little later, the theme was picked up by donald trump jr. Its almost like this election is shaping up to be church, work and school versus rioting, looting and vandalism. Reporter but wasnt all doom and gloom. Two of the most high profile speakers of the night were republicans with dramatically different styles than the president. Both of them people of color. Nikki haley, the former governor of South Carolina who served under President Trump as the u. S. Ambassador to the united nations, highlighted her story as the daughter of immigrants from india. In much of the democratic party, its now fashionable to say that america is racist. That is a lie. America is not a racist country. Reporter and senator tim scott, also from South Carolina, gave a hopeful speech about the opportunity he has found in america. Our family went from cotton to congress in one lifetime, and thats why i believe the next American Century can be better than the last. So, that was day one. Now night two of the convention. Jon karl live at the white house and jon, secretary of state mike pompeo, we know, also addressing the convention tonight. Hell do so from jerusalem and jon, this is unprecedented for americas top diplomat to appear during a convention . Reporter oh, its beyond unprecedented, david. Secretaries of state, both democrat and republican, have long believed that it is simply inappropriate for americas top diplomat to take part in overt political events. In fact, the last six secretaries of state didnt even attend their partys convention because they didnt want to have even the appearance of being political. And then you have the added element that this was taped in jerusalem, where mike pompeo has been traveling in his official capacity as secretary of state. All right, jon karl. Jon, well see you shortly for the convention. I hope youll join george, linsey and me, the entire Political Team tonight for coverage of night two of the Republican National convention. 7 00 p. M. Eastern, abc news live and then 10 00 p. M. Eastern, right here on the network. Were going to turn now to the coronavirus tonight and the new report which shows just how quickly this can spread and multiply. How one conference in the northeast attended by fewer than 200 people, researchers say then led to an estimated 20,000 cases in the boston area alone. Theres also news tonight on potential vaccines and dr. Anthony fauci warning against rushing out a vaccine before its been proven safe and effective. Heres steve osunsami. Reporter there were fewer than 200 people who came to this boston hotel in february for an International Biotech conference, but a new study tonight says that this one event may have led to nearly 20,000 covid19 infections in the boston area alone. The race for a potential vaccine to end this pandemic is seriously on, with 30 in human trials around the world. But americas leading Infectious Disease doctor is warning everyone about rolling any of them out too early, saying that the one thing you would not want to see with a vaccine is getting an eua emergency use authorization before you have a signal of efficacy. Dr. Anthony fauci warns that this could also make it more difficult for any of the other efforts to find enough volunteers, like these people, for their clinical trials. I dont want to be sitting down not doing anything. Reporter critics believe the fda is being rushed, as well, and are pointing to the president. The agency has just given the okay for emergency use of plasma therapy to treat covid19 and the commissioner is being called out for overselling the potential benefits during this News Conference with President Trump. The commissioner is now apologizing for exaggerating the numbers, but says the agencys move is still a good one. I can assure the American People that this decision was made based upon sound science and data. Reporter there are now two new reported cases of people who have gotten reinfected with covid19 within months. Last night, we told you about a case out of hong kong. Tonight, two new cases in europe. One of them is a belgian woman who first got sick in march and then tested positive again in june. David . All right, troubling. Thank you, steve. Were going to turn next here, evangelical leader Jerry Falwell jr. Resigning tonight as president of Liberty University. One of President Trumps most powerful evangelical supporters, hes now stepping down. And what falwell is now saying about the sex scandal involving his wife and a young man who falwell and his wife allegedly met when he was a miami pool boy. Heres kyra phillips. Reporter Jerry Falwell jr. Fought to stay at the helm of Liberty University, the nations largest christian college, founded by his famous father. But the board had had enough, announcing, it would not be in the best interest of the university for falwell to stay on. Overnight, he resigned, telling me, its time to move on. Ive done all that i can. Today, we will confer nearly 19,000 degrees and will make history. Reporter his fall from grace was swift and steep. A onetime miami pool attendant, giancarlo granda, claiming hed had a sevenyear affair with falwells wife, becki, and that falwell watched when they were intimate. I spoke with jerry and Becki Falwell. They admit becki did have the affair, but they deny Jerry Falwell jr. Was involved. They tell me granda, who became a business partner, is trying to extort them. The falwells were among the top evangelical supporters of President Trump. I truly believe mr. Trump is americas blue collar billionaire. Reporter Becki Falwell seen here speaking with the president s daughterinlaw. We are so proud of our students here at liberty and its just such an honor to be able to serve alongside them and we try to teach good family values and good morals. Reporter the falwells now telling me theyre victims of a political hit job. The falwells telling me tonight, david, that although Liberty University accepted his resignation, some Board Members have reached out expressing their support for the family. David . All right, kyra, thanks to you again tonight. Hundreds of protesters are not giving up in their demands for justice for Breonna Taylor in louisville. Images tonight showing a large crowd marching through the city. Breonna taylor, a black emt, was fatally shot in march by Police Serving a no knock warrant. Kentuckys attorney general must now decide whether to charge the officers involved. When we come back on the broadcast tonight, the helicopter pilot killed while dropping water on the fires.
