Since mothers day, the fbi now searching a massive landfill. A coworker in custody. And rip current emergency. Five teens swept from the shore. The nearly hourlong search and rescue. The traumatic start to summer. And good evening. Thanks for joining us this saturday. Im tom llamas. And we begin tonight with the intensifying efforts to free a dozen boys trapped in a flooded cave in thailand. Those are fears those boys and their soccer coach could be running out of air and possibly time. After two weeks in terrible conditions. One plan to remove them teaming them up with experienced divers. And those ominous clouds, giving way. New rain beginning to fall tonight. As letters emerge between the boys and their families with their coach asking for parents forgiveness. The new rescue plan from abcs James Longman, starting us off tonight. Reporter the threat of heavy rain has long been rooming. But now, it seems the weather may be ready to break over the cave, where those 12 boys and their soccer coach have been stuck for more than two weeks. Water still up to the necks of divers bringing precious supplies, including air tanks, through the floodwater that still block the boys escape. When the boys went into the cave it was dry, but it was rain like this that caused it to flood so quickly. The rain has now come back again, and this could really jeopardize the rescue. This diver claiming the water is still too high, that mission to extract the boys could soon begin, according to an internal report obtained by abc news. Guided by ropes thai navy s. E. A. L. S would go through the maze of flooded passageways and narrow tunnels to get to the boys and take them out using the buddy system. But its dangerous. The boys are weak and inexperienced swimmers. And the death of a former thai navy s. E. A. L. Highlighted the risk. Other options are still being considered. Authorities continue an attempt to drill from the mountain into the cave to drain water out and feed air to the team in an effort to keep them from having to swim out. But this takes time the boys may not have. Might take a day or two days. And to drill probably expect about five days or six days. Reporter while they wait in the darkness, letters to their waiting families keep hope alive. Unsurprisingly, food on their minds. And a 13yearold sharing with his parents, im safe. Im doing fine. The air is a little cold. But dont worry. Although, dont forget to set up my birthday party. Their coach also sending a note to the families of the boys. I promise i will care for the kids as best as possible. I want to say thanks for all the support and i want to apologize to the parents. That apology coming in that letter there. But we did have very serious discussions on very important matters yesterday. So thinking about those discussions you might have not slept well last night. Director kim, i slept just fine. Reporter just before leaving, pompeo trying to put the best spin on his third trip to north korea even though he was denied a meeting with kim jongun. We had productive, good faith negotiations. Reporter but shortly after takeoff, that good faith was gone. The North Koreans slamming the u. S. In a statement saying they pushed a unilateral and gangsterlike demand for denuclearization, calling the u. S. Issues cancerous and expressing disappointment that the u. S. Left all troops in south korea. Now, were well on our way to get denuclearization, and the agreement says there will be total denuclearization. Reporter there were hopes for progress after that historic summit just over a month ago, now the talks seemingly in shambles. I wanted to stop the war games, i thought they were very provocative. Reporter while the Trump Administration agreed to call off their military exercises with south korea, the North Koreans have yet to deliver on their pledge to return the remains of u. S. Combat veterans. And there are reports that they have not curbed their nuclear activities. Rocket man is on a Suicide Mission for himself. Reporter with north korea calling the weekends talks deeply regrettable, speculation now growing that the heated rhetoric between kim and trump will also return. U. S. Officials tell me theyre not surprise by the harsh statement by the North Koreans, they see it as a negotiating tactic.
