A terrible loss for a san jose family. Fire claims the lives of two young family members who never made it out of their home this morning. Im eric thomas. And im dion lim. A teenage girl and a young man in their early 20s were killed. Two more relatives are fighting for their lives in critical condition. Abc 7 News Reporter Cornell Barnard joins us live from san jose with the story. Cornell . Eric and dion, a very sad scene here on 9th street. Two family members are dead after a fire inside this apartment building. The unit where it happened is now boarded up. Firefighters trying to determine if smoke detectors inside the apartment were working. All i remember is hearing people screaming and also a glass breaking. Reporter neighbor jose rosa woke to chaos saturday morning. The upstairs unit of the apartment house next door was on fire. Smoke coming out of the windows, and there was a couple, or whoever at that far end trying to get out the window. The flames were just unbelievable. Neighbors say a family of four lived in the unit. All trapped by the smoke and flames. We went to a third alarm, which is almost 100 firefighters and command staff. Reporter but those resources were not enough to save the lives of two relatives. Sadly, it was one teenager and one adult that were death was determined here on the lawn. Reporter two other victims who neighbors identify as the parents were taken to the hospital with critical injuries. Im just thinking about the kids because i see them go to school. Reporter neighbors say the family was hardworking and kind. I wish this could have been prevented. Just really, really sad right now. Reporter inside the apartment there is little left. Fire officials believe the intense blaze started in the kitchen. A fire extinguisher still hangs unused outside the kitchen door. We heard no smoke detectors. Reporter firefighters now investigating if smoke detectors were working. Whether they were or not, the task didnt get accomplished, which is for whatever reason these poor people were not woken in time to get out safely. Reporter these people identified by tenants as the buildings owners had no comment for us. In san jose, Cornell Barnard. Abc 7 news. A bay area man has been charged with molesting a child in jamaica. The department of justice says 43yearold Douglas Peacock of foster city molested a 6yearold in the pool at a resort in june. Hes being returned to San Francisco to face the charge. If convicted, he could face up to 30 years in prison. A Stanislaus County deputy is on leave tonight after a newly released video shows a brutal beating during an arrest. Report reporter has details. Reporter a friend translate as Michaela Garcia describes what she saw last friday night, right before someone else at modestos Caruso Shopping Center captured disturbing video that now has a Stanislaus County deputy under investigation for repeatedly hitting a homeless man. The cell phone video recorded without audio shows what happened after deputies and Modesto Police responded to calls from the area about a mans erratic behavior in thick traffic at the intersection of Crows Landing and hatch roads. In it it appears Deputy Taylor knight hit that man at least eight times, with another officer on scene eventually trying to pull him back. [ speaking spanish ]. She was scared because they had the kids inside, so they got in there quick and locked it, but she did feel bad for the guy that was getting beat up. Reporter garcia was selling flowers at one end of the parking lot tonight just as she was last friday. [ speaking spanish ]. Reporter she says the man, who was 33 years old according to investigators, came at her before the takedown. He ran over here and she said they tries to get on the car but they locked it. Reporter sheriff Adam Christiansen would not comment about the situation on camera today but did give this statement saying, i am disappointed and concerned but i want the public to know that we are going to thoroughly investigate the incident to find out what happened and we will take the appropriate actions necessary once we have all the facts. We are looking at all circumstances leading up to the contact with the individual who was arrested and what happened or what you see happening in that video. The man hit by three Year Department veteran Deputy Knight was originally facing a felony suspicion of resisting arrest with force or violence charge. But the sheriff says what he saw in the video didnt support that. The charge was dropped to a misdemeanor for delaying or obstructing a Police Officer and he was released within 48 hours of arrest. Having suffered minor cuts to the head. Christiansen also told fox 40 the man officers were trying to get under control and handcuffed is a transient who is well known to the department. The painkiller fentanyl has also become an epidemic because its such a dangerous and addictive opioid. For Law Enforcement officers coming in contact with that drug is risky. Reporter its an extreme response for handling an extremely dangerous drug. This is the biggest threat were facing right now. Reporter federal agents are calling fentanyl an epidemic. 30 to 50 times more powerful than heroin. Exposure is also so risky for first responders. Theyre now wearing these airtight suits. Seven to eight grains of salt sizes, you inhale that and then youre going to immediately start having trouble breathing.
