Good evening. And its great to have you with us here on a tuesday night. And we begin with fastmoving developments from the investigation into that doomed passenger jet. An airbus a320 and that eightminute descent to death. What should have been a relatively quick flight. Barcelona to dusseldorf, germany. Plummeting in just minutes. Disappearing from radar, silence from the cockpit. Disintegrating in the french alps. 150 people now feared dead. These images of the crash scene. That plane in tiny pieces. You can almost make out the name of the airline there. You can see a row of windows in the damage. Families of the passengers in shock, gathering at the airport, waiting for official word tonight. On board that plane, families, parents with babies, students headed home after an Exchange Program. And tonight, there is new word, one of the black boxes has been recovered. We do have Team Coverage this evening, and we begin with abcs chief Foreign Correspondent terry moran at the airport in dusseldorf. Reporter rescuers on board a helicopter flying high into the alps, searching, hoping for signs of life. But sifting through the wreckage along the Rugged Ridges of this remote mountain area, some of the debris still smoldering, the plane just obliterated, it was clear. All are lost. Scattered among the rocks, parts of the tail. And the fuselage. You see the planes window there, and a bit of the germanwings logo. It was supposed to be a routine flight. Just after 10 00 a. M. , the germanwings aircraft takes off from barcelona, heading toward dusseldorf, about a twohour journey. On board, 150 people, including two babies and six crew members. The airbus a320 reaches a cruising altitude of 38,000 feet when suddenly, something goes wrong and it starts a steep descent. Eight minutes later, with the plane now just 6,000 feet above the french alps, air Traffic Control loses all contact. Local eyewitnesses describe what happened next. I saw the plane come out from over there and it was really low in altitude, this man says. And then we heard a very loud sound, like dynamite, she says. Within 30 minutes, rescue choppers on the scene. Dangerous terrain for a recovery mission, so steep and the debris scattered over a huge area. The french alps, now the scene of a massive effort. Abcs Hamish Macdonald is there. Reporter when day breaks in a few hours from now, well over 700 people will be working on this operation. But for all the military helicopters and hardware, to reach this crash site, some of the recovery workers will have to walk the final miles by foot. Reporter at the airports across europe and here in dusseldorf, anguish. Frantic relatives looking for news. And in the german town of haltern, at this school, an unimaginable heartbreak. 16 tenth graders and two of their teachers studying spanish returning home after an Exchange Program and now theyre all gone. Today, their town mayor could only say, it is pretty much the worst thing you could imagine. So, now the investigation begins and they have already recovered one of the black boxes from that airbus a320. Aviation experts in paris will now scour the data on it, looking for any clues to find out what went so wrong with this flight. David . Terry moran, leading us off tonight live from germany. Terry, thank you. And tonight, an urgent search for answers is now under way. And abcs david kerley, who covers aviation for us, on the speed of the descent, and what it might reveal. And just when that radar signal disappeared. Reporter the mystery, the question tonight, what happened just after this airbus a320 reached cruising altitude . A handful of possibilities are top of mind for investigators, given that it was just one minute after reaching 38,000 feet that the jetliner nosed down, descending one and a half to two times faster than normal, making at what appears to be an emergency descent. Looking at the rate of descent and the profile were aware of, it appears to be an intentional maneuver. Why, we dont know. Reporter one possibility . A quick depressurization lack of oxygen meaning the pilots could have become incapacitated. Smoke in the cockpit, making it difficult to see or operate and the crew could have been overcome by the smoke. A third possibility . Was there a problem the pilots were trying to deal with and followed emergency procedures to lose altitude and work the issue . But there was no radio call. Normally, what you do is you fly the airplane first. And possibly theyre deeming with heavy smoke, fire on the airplane. It may be that priorities have not gotten to communicating yet. Reporter and finally, while Officials Say it is unlikely, hijacking or terrorism still cant be ruled out. And david kerley is with us now from our washington studio. And david, youve been digging today. What do we know about the planes Maintenance Issue . Reporter amazingly, it had just been through a regular maintenance check yesterday, and had a major servicing on schedule a couple of years ago. These a320s are safe and reliable. There are more than 6,000 of them in service worldwide. David . David kerley in our Washington Bureau tonight. David, thank you. And i want to bring in abcs aviation consultant, a veteran pilot himself, john nance, tonight. And john, i want to take everyone at home back to the pictures those aerials that show the plane simply obliterated, nothing but tiny pieces remaining. When you hear about the descent, john, david kerley reporting one and a half times faster than the typical descent. What does it tell you . David, it tells me that they were in an emergency descent. They either had to get down because there was smoke in the cockpit or because they had a rapid depressurization, something they were reacting to. And you were telling me, if there had been something truly catastrophic catastrophic it could have plummeted even faster. This is true. You can take an airplane like this up to a faster speed and get up to what we call barber pole, that would be almost 7,000, 8,000 feet per minute. What do you make of the fact that there was no distress call . We didnt hear anything from the pilots . This is one of the big puzzles, because normally, when you start an emergency descent and you turn offcourse a little bit, as they did, youre going into oncoming traffic, and step number one, after you get it established in the descent is to call air Traffic Control. Why they didnt do it, we dont know. Could they not have . Was there no electrical power . And you heard david report there that this particular plane was checked out just yesterday, but there are a billion passengers who ride airbus a320s every year and everyone is going to want to know tonight, how safe are they . These are very safe airplanes. Theyre right up there with the boeing 737. Theyre workhorses and theyre very resilient when used the way theyre designed to be used. Nearly two years after undergoing a double mastectomy, to reduce her chance of developing cancer, now, the 39yearold choosing to have her ovaries, her fallopian tubes removed. But tonight, warning other women about following suit shes urging caution. Abcs cecilia vega now. Reporter one of hollywoods most public faces tonight is sharing a very private decision. Angelina jolie says a recent blood test detected what could be signs of early Ovarian Cancer. The very disease that took the life of her mother. About 20,000 american women get Ovarian Cancer each year. Most will die from it. And so, last week, jolie had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed. A preventative surgery that she calls the best option. I told myself to stay calm, to be strong, and that i had no reason to think i wouldnt live to see my children grow up and to meet my grandchildren. It is a surgery that comes with severe consequences. I will not be able to have anymore children, she writes, but i feel at ease with whatever will come. Its the second Stunning Health revelation from this leading lady. Nearly two years ago, jolie underwent a preventative double mastectomy, after testing positive for brca1. Women who carry this gene mutation have a nearly 65 risk of Breast Cancer and a 39 risk of Ovarian Cancer. I didnt expect there to be so much support. And i was very moved by it. Reporter the socalled angelina effect prompting more women than ever to get genetic testing for cancer. A reaction that surprised the actress, as she told George Stephanopoulos last year. Its connected me so much to other families, other women. Its been a really beautiful journey. Reporter but carrying a gene mutation, jolie says, does not mean a leap to surgery. This time, she emphasized that she and other women just like her have options. She writes, i feel feminine and grounded in the choices i am making for myself and my family. And jolie says, when youre faced with decisions like the one that she just had to make, you realize what matters in life, what is important, really, and she says she finds peace in that. She also, david, says her children will now never have to say, my mom dies of Ovarian Cancer. David . Cecilia, thank you. Lets get right to abcs dr. Jen ashton. We were both struck by what Angelina Jolie wrote. She said, this does not mean a leap to surgery for all women going through the same thing. In fact, you say thats an important point. Reporter absolutely. And in fact 30 of women choose not to have the surgery. But the benefits are really clear. Studies have shown that in women with this mutation when they have their tubes and ovaries removed, it cuts the risk of death by 70 . But whats really new here, david, is the fallopian tubes. Thats where the majority of Ovarian Cancer is thought to originate. Thats a stunning number, cutting the risk by 70 . And in fact you say youve performed this procedure many times. Reporter yes. And its minimally invasive generally low risk surgery. It can be done in as little as 15 minutes. There are always risks, small risks due to anesthesia or bleeding, but the major impact is that it does put a woman into immediate menopause. And those symptoms can have a major impact on quality of life. And you were saying in the newsroom its important to lay out all the decisions with your doctor. Reporter correct. Now, to the new images coming in after that incident at the white house, nearly three weeks ago now. The agents accused of driving drunk. Two Top Secret Service agents inside that car, bumping a barrier, all while other agents were already investigating what they thought was a possible bomb. The video only surfacing now, weeks after those first reports, that delay sparking outrage tonight on capitol hill and youre about to hear it. Abcs senior justice correspondent Pierre Thomas tonight. Reporter the incident is infamous. Allegedly drunk secret Service Agents outside a white house gate. But the video released today is far less dramatic. Two agents in a government car driving slowly, no high speed, no crash. Just nudging a temporary barrier. But that didnt stop members of congress from blistering the new secret Service Director its like the keystones cop here. Reporter and today, new questions about whether the secret service responded aggressively enough to a possible bomb threat. The reason there was a crime scene in the first place. It took you 30 minutes to be on the lookout for a woman who dropped a package at the white house and said, this is a bomb. This is the life, safety and security of the president of the United States and the white house. The president is safe, the first family is safe and the white house is safe. Reporter police say 18yearold lynne schulze, who disappeared in 1971, was last seen across the street from a store durst owned in middlebury, vermont. Police have been investigating him since 2012, but they caution, evidence is scant. All we can say at this time is they were in the same approximate location in the same time frame. Reporter now 71 and frail, durst, who is suspected of three other deaths or disappearances was denied bail on monday. Durst sat right here throughout the days proceedings, his hands and feet shackled. He was in an orange jumpsuit. But this time, he seemed much more attentive to what the judge and the prosecutor were saying. And to a burst of drama, when the millionaires attorney tried to call former West Chester County d. A.
