Good evening. And we begin with breaking news on several fronts. First, boston tonight. The accused boston bomber, dzhokhar tsarnaev, the trial starting with a chilling admission from his own lawyer, saying, it was him. But then making the case that his older brothers influence made him do it. And at this hour, startling new images at the moment those bombs went off. Prosecutors showing the pictures, building a case for the death penalty. And look, inside this Sporting Goods store, bystanders running from the blast that day. A dramatic and difficult first day in court for so many survivors who were right there in the courtroom. Abcs chief investigative correspondent brian ross is also there. Reporter with new video made public for the first time today, prosecutors brought back the horror of that festive spring race day in boston. The first bomb blast near the marathon finish line. And then, in the distance, the second, much more powerful blast. The chaos and the carnage and the aftermath caught on tape by a wounded spectator. Get them out of here. Reporter frantic emergency workers try to treat the most seriously injured first. Inside a nearby sports store, stunned and wounded spectators stumble in. The store manager uses running clothes to fix a tourniquet on the leg of a badly injured woman. Others ripped closes off the rack to be used as tourniquets for the wounded still outside. It was a dramatic opening day in the trial. Attended by dozens of victims who were wounded or lost limbs in the attack. And in a surprise opening statement, Dzhokhar Tsarnaevs lawyer, judy clarke, flatly stated, it was him. Admitting he was responsible for the senseless horrific misguided acts. But she pointed to this video of tsarnaev and his older brother tamerlan about to plant their bombs, to claim her client was only following the path created by his older brother, later killed in a police shootout. Setting the stage for a defense that could help the younger brother avoid the death penalty. Given the amount of evidence the government has, i would suggest its the only strategy. Reporter and perhaps the most damning video will be shown next week, an extension of this still photo. Tsarnaev, his hat on backwards, right after he dropped the bomb in his backpack on the ground, just feet away from the richard family, whose 8yearold son martin died in the blast. Prosecutors told the jury today they will prove that tsarnaev was a committed terrorist in his own right, a soldier in a holy war, out to punish america. David . Brian ross leading us off tonight from boston. Brian, thank you. Now, to the breaking news at this hour overseas. The American Ambassador to south korea, injured in an attack. Ambassador mark lippert seen bleeding, rushed to the hospital. He was reported to be on his way to a lecture in seoul. Abcs chief Foreign Correspondent terry moran in our London Bureau tonight. Terry . Reporter an alarming moment for sure david. Ambassador lippert was attacked by a man wielding a razor who slashed at his face and screamed south and north korea should be reunified. The ambassador wounded, bleeding heavily from the attack. He was rushed to a hospital. His injuries are said to be nonlife threatening. The assail lance also shouted no to war training before he was subdued and arrested on the spot. The u. S. And south korea, we should say, are engaged in joint military exercises right now. North korea, as usual, issuing dire threat ss. All in all, a very close call in seoul. David . Terry moran live in london tonight on the attack on the American Ambassador to south korea. Officer Darren Wilson now officially cleared of civil Rights Violations in the shooting death of michael brown. Tonight, browns family speaking out. And it comes 4 hour ss 24 hours after that scathing report finding a pattern of racism and discrimination inside fergusons police force. And tonight, stunning new revelations, emails from officers making racist remarks. Abcs senior justice correspondent Pierre Thomas with the emails as the police are set to respond. Reporter no federal prosecution of the white Police Officer in the Fatal Shooting of an unarmed black man. The facts do not support the filing of criminal charges against officer Darren Wilson. Reporter wilson had always maintained his innocence, including in this exclusive interview with abc news. Is there anything you could have done differently that would have prevented that killing from taking place . No. Reporter from the family of michael brown, disappointment. Its unimaginable to them that their child could be killed and no one be held responsible for it. Reporter but while holder declined to prosecute wilson, today, he indicted the practices of the ferguson police, the Municipal Court and City Government as biased against blacks. According to the justice department, though africanamericans make up 67 of the towns population, they were hit with 90 of police citations. These policing practices disproportionately harm africanamerican residents. Reporter 90 of alleged Excessive Force victims were africanamericans. Police dogs only used on blacks. And the investigation uncovered racist emails from Police Supervisors and court officials. One depicted president obama as a chimpanzee. Another included a photo of barechested women apparently in africa with the caption, Michelle Obamas high school reunion. David, tonight, one Ferguson City official has been fired and two others suspended because of those racist emails. Pierre thomas on this case again tonight. Pierre, thank you. We turn now to denver and the emergency evacuation on the tarmac there. Passengers sliding to safety today, standing in the snow. After the pilot ordered them to get off the plane, it had just landed moments before. And abcs Clayton Sandell from denver. Reporter this snowy taxiway at denvers airport is not where these passengers expected to get off. What the [ bleep ] is going on . Reporter using emergency slides to evacuate this airbus jet after reports of smoke in the cabin. Ive got the flight crew over here, they say the reason he evacuated the aircraft, the captain, is because he had smoke rolling through the cabin. Reporter Brooks Robinson was in the 14th row. Shooting down this video as he rode down the escape slide. We had to evacuate off the airplane. It was an odor i wasnt familiar with and i didnt want to breathe it in. Reporter his flight, u. S. Airways 445 was on the way from charlotte to denver with 158 passengers and six crew. The plane had just landed, but as it taxied to the gate, the pilot was alerted to the smoke and made the call to deploy those emergency slides immediately. Passengers were bussed to the terminal, where paramedics checked them out. Were there any injuries . There were several, but they were all very minor. Reporter and here in denver, officials do not believe there was a fire on board, but they still havent figured out exactly where that smoke came from. Clinton, in a possible violation of federal regulations, completely bypass the state departments email system, it turns out she also bypassed big email providers like gmail and yahoo , instead running her emails through a private server, apparently set up at her home in chappaqua, new york, a fact first reported by the associated press. Even odder, her email server is registered under the name eric hoteham. Its not clear who that is, and the clinton team is not saying. Its a big leap for someone who once said at a private fundraiser that she wanted no part of email at all. As much as ive been investigated and all that, you know why would i ever want to do email . Reporter mrs. Clinton headlined a big fundraiser for the group emilys list last night, saying nothing about the email controversy, but reminding her supporters of the history she hopes to make. That she kept all of her emails and about two months ago, turned over 90 of them to the state department, including all of those related to official business. All right, jon. Thats when the federal government stepped in, making insurance available and paying subsidies nationwide. Today, the plaintiffs before the Supreme Court arguing that is illegal, because of those four words, established by the state. But the Obama Administration argues thats just a technicality.
