Good evening, and we begin with the urgent manhunt after the attack in one of the most iconic cities in the world. 12 people, gunned down, murdered. Some of their names called out one by one. Tonight, authorities know who theyre looking for, after two gunmen, wearing all black, sprinting through this paris street. Opening fire on police, too, an officer wounded on the ground. Were not going to show you what happens next. And moments later, the suspects getting into this car and taking off. Tonight, thousands on edge, and others gathering across paris. Weve learned how they broke into that building. Forcing a Mother Holding her child to enter the security code. We have Team Coverage tonight, the concerns here at home. First, terry moran reporting in from paris. Reporter today in the streets of paris, terrorists wearing ski masks and carrying automatic weapons, firing a hail of bullets. The deadliest attack france has seen in decades. Unfolding here, at the offices of Charlie Hebdo, a satirical newspaper. About a mile from the famous notre dame cathedral, across the city from the eiffel tower. The attackers pulling up around 11 30 a. M. , opening fire on two doormen, killing one. Inside, they find corinne rey, a cartoonist for the paper. And her young daughter. They force her to give them the Office Security code and enter. Their targets the staff of a newspaper that has long skewered radical islam and other religions. The masked men, walking into an editorial meeting. Gunning down the editor, stephane charbonnier. And then nine others. Youre describing an execution. Yes. Reporter they knew each person they wanted to kill. Exactly. They called their names and shot them in the head. It was not a riot. Clearly an execution. Reporter five minutes later, the gunmen racing out, shooting at police and shouting allahu akbar reporter allahu akbar, god is great. And according to witnesses, we avenged the prophet mohammed. They shoot and wound one policeman, and then, running towards him, they execute him on the ground. Sprinting to their car, they speed off. In their wake, a chaotic scene. The wounded on stretchers, neighbors shocked Something Like this could happen here. I can still hear the shots ringing through my ears, this woman says. I never would have believed id hear shooting on my own street. All day, a citywide man hunt. U. S. Officials telling us theyre looking for three suspects. Hamyd mourad, and the brothers said and cherif kouachi. And heavily armed policemen in the city of rhimes. And as night fell on paris, thousands gathering at place de la republique, holding signs. Not afraid. And this, je suis charlie, i am charlie. This is a city in shock. And Something Else, this was an attack on france, and you get the idea that they will fight back. Terry, thank you. Now to the suspects. Their names given to u. S. Authorities. And the real concern were seeing Something Else here. A shift from lone wolf attacks to ones planned by a hidden terrorist cell. Authorities already know isis and simple thiezers are looking to attack the u. S. And other countries. Lets go to brian ross. You were telling me the weapons they used was very telling. Reporter david, Counter Terror experts say this was no lonewolf amateur attack, but instead a wellplanned and targeted combat operation. The eyewitness video tells a story. The gunmen dressed in black combat outfits, carrying automatic weapons difficult to obtain in france. They appear to have extra ammunition magazines strapped across their chests, wearing special shooting gloves to steady their aim. The tight cluster of bullet holes in the police car windshield is the work of someone well trained to use an automatic weapon. And one of the attackers calmly executing a Police Officer lying on the sidewalk. This is a hit, a professional hit. They were cool, calm and collected and they had fire discipline. Their bullets hit the targets. Reporter the Charlie Hebdo magazine and its editor had been the subject of repeated threats from Al Qaeda Leaders over its cartoons that mocked the prophet mohammed. Charlie hebdo. Reporter after the magazine was firebombed three years ago, its editor, stephane charbonnier, told abc news he would not be intimidated. Without freedom of speech, we are dead. Reporter charbonnier was one of the ten journalists killed today by the attackers, who somehow knew to hit just as the magazines weekly editorial meeting was getting under way. And brian is back with us now. And the names of the three suspects have been given to u. S. Authorities tonight . Yes, and theyre being run through a massive american database. Including internet combinations phone calls and even travel and cia reports. They want to know if theres any connection. Thank you, brian. And president obama offering u. S. Resources to watch the gunmen and anybody that helped them. Lets go to martha raddatz. Many at home likely thinking about these recent attacks. In canada, storming the parliament in ottawa. As we heard from brian, this is different, and a real concern. It is, david. The attacks in canada and australia, they appeared to be inspired by isis online but didnt know much about it. Socalled lone wolves looking for a cause and mentally disturbed. But these seemed more determined and homegrown. Trying to terrorize and kill as many as possible. This is exactly the kind of attack authorities fear most in the u. S. Terrorists that have traveled out of the country to be trained and then returned, or those connected to a larger group and a larger cause where they can great weapons and support. Thanks. This evening, weve learned of heightened security here at home. At least four cities. Pierre thomas, what are they telling us tonight . Well, theres evidence of home. New york police are standing guard outside of the french consulate. There are nine other french consulates in the u. S. , and atlanta, boston and chicago are also enhancing security. Abc news has learned fbi and Homeland Security officials will hold a special conference call. In the next 24 hours with Police Across the country to discuss the paris nightmare.
