And good evening from washington. Two major stories tonight. Late word from the fbi on that threat to movie theaters across this country. But we begin with the stories now emerging from the School Children who survived the taliban storming their school in pakistan, and the number is staggering. At least 141 killed. Tonight, pictures now coming in. A Security Guard rushing an injured child to safety. This mother, mourning her son. A Good Samaritan, comforting these two young boys. And these parents waiting for word, did their children survive . Tonight, the white house calling this a heinous attack and abcs chief Global Affairs correspondent Martha Raddatz leading us off. Reporter it began just after 10 00 this morning and would not end for eight terrifying hours. There were only a handful of taliban gunmen, but the damage they inflicted is almost inconceivable. Those 132 students, sons, daughters, gone. The youngest, 2 years old. A visitor. The others, first graders through high school. This young man among the more than 120 wounded, but his mother, a teacher, one of many teachers killed. The taliban going room to room, lobbing grenades, hunting the students down. Pumping bullets into child after child as they lay on the floor. Then what happened . What did you see . They were fighting. I was hiding. All the people, all the students, theyre scared. They were getting down to hide themselves, but they couldnt. Reporter when the pakistani troops stormed the building, the taliban set off suicide vests. Desperate parents waited outside, many of them the very troops who came to help. These were mostly their children, singled out by the taliban to punish the pakistani troops for going on the offensive against militants in the nearby tribal areas. But this horrific attack on the innocent will likely backfire on the taliban. Tonight, pakistans government vowing to root out the militants. The country united and the world denouncing the attack. Perhaps the most powerful voice, malala yousafzai, the Nobel Prize Winner who survived a near lethal Taliban Attack herself. We should stand up together and fight against terrorism. Reporter the region is bracing for what comes next. This is a nation used to violence, but when you go after someones children, there will no doubt be blood revenge. David . Just incredibly awful story. Martha, thank you. Now, to the other breaking story tonight. The urgent new threat to movie theaters across this nation, from the same hackers who say they hacked that hollywood studio, now alluding to what happened on 9 11, if that movie depicting north koreas leader is shown here in this country. Well tonight, here in washington, sources telling abc news they are now investigating the hollywood hacking scandal as a, quote, National Security matter. Abcs cecilia vega with what the hackers are threatening to do. Reporter the most menacing message so far. A threat invoking 9 11, warning of attacks at theaters planning to show the interview. It is the first piece of a Christmas Gift promised by the Group Calling itself guardians of peace. The latest online taunt saying, we recommend you to keep yourself distant. If your house is nearby, youd better leave. We take those threats very seriously and we will take extra precautions during the holidays at theaters. Reporter sony not commenting on the threat or its plans for the Christmas Day release for the comedy about north korea. But today, the stars of the interview, james franco and seth rogen, abruptly canceled a press tour in the wake of the warning. The fbi is investigating. The department of Homeland Security says, at this time, there is no credible intelligence to indicate an active plot against movie theaters within the united states. And now, the first lawsuit from the fallout. Two former sony employees filing a federal class action suit, claiming sony failed to protect confidential information, calling it an epic nightmare, much better suited to a cinematic thriller than to real life. This attack is massive and its significant. Reporter it has been an almost daily embarrassment for sony and some of hollywoods biggest stars. Social security numbers, salaries, personal emails all made public. Brad pitt now leading the backlash, telling access hollywood someones conversation whether on email or in person should be private. Reporter the hackers also released another file today, reportedly the entire email account of sonys ceo. The Group Delivering this warning, promising the world will be filled with fear. David . Cecilia, thank you. Lets get right to abcs senior justice correspondent Pierre Thomas with me here in washington. Youve been talking to your sources, pierre. How concerned are they . How credible do they think this threat is . Reporter david, theyre still assessing the credibility of the threat. Some of our sources tell us tonight, the threat of physical violence at the movie theaters is low. But there are a lot of unknowns. The primary suspect is the north korean government and no one knows exactly what theyre willing to do. But your source is telling you that this is, in fact, a National Security threat . Reporter definitely. The people who hacked sony got critical information about a companys strategy. In short, they damaged sony in a way not seen before and theyre threatening sony, telling the company, do not release this movie. My sources say weve entered a new era of cyber warfare with a new form of economic blackmail. The fbi on this tonight, so is Pierre Thomas. Thank you. Now, to that frightening American Airlines flight on its way to dallas from seoul, south korea. The flight hit severe turbulence long before it got here. More than a dozen injured. Glass drinks flying through the cabin. Just one of the images there, you can see the dent in the overhead bin. There was an emergency landing, and tonight, we hear of the panic and of the prayers on board. Heres abcs clayton sandell. Reporter Flight Attendants had just begun serving meals when severe turbulence suddenly sent food, passengers and crew flying. It was like a little bump and then there was a really big one. Where, like, all of my drinks went up and hit the ceiling. Reporter the American Airlines flight with 240 passengers and 15 crew was on its way from seoul, south korea, to dallas. But when the shaking started off the coast of japan, the pilots turned for tokyo. Passengers say luggage, laptops, broken glass plates and anyone not buckled in went airborne. Passengers tell us people were screaming, praying. Babies were crying. Ive flown millions of miles. This is the worst ive ever seen. Reporter paramedics met the boeing 777 to treat the injured. Four passengers and one Flight Attendant were taken to a hospital. Severe turbulence like this injures an average of 37 people every year. The force can be so strong, passengers heads have been known to break through the panels in the cabin. And david, one passenger we talked to believes that Flight Attendant was injured when she hit her head on the ceiling. The airline says that all the passengers who are well enough to travel should be able to fly home tomorrow. David . Clayton, thank you. And we move onto that dramatic hostage rescue. [ gunfire ] of course, the world watching as that s. W. A. T. Team stormed into that chocolate shop in sydney. They saved to many lives. But there were two other heroes were now learning about tonight, and abcs david wright on what they were willing to do. Reporter today, were learning more about those frantic hours inside that cafe. [ gunfire ] 34yearold tori johnson, being hailed as a hero. Witnesses say the cafe manager died trying to disarm the gunman, allowing others to escape. Allowing others to escape. He was a leader. He always put his staff first. Reporter 30yearold harriette denny, a cafe worker, owes her life to johnson. Her dad, watching on television. When i first saw her running, i wanted to see that image again, because i wanted to make sure it was her. Reporter 38yearold Katrina Dawson, not so lucky. She was there having coffee with a friend, judy taylor, who managed to call australias channel 9 from inside the cafe. Im pregnant and theres one other lady who is pregnant. Reporter taylor survived, reportedly because Katrina Dawson tried to shield her. Dawson took a bullet. At the flower memorial today, teddy bears and prayers. I can empathize. She was a mother of three young children. I have a young child myself and i just felt very sad for those people. Reporter and that is the cafe itself today. Those black tarps shrouding the windows that police blew out in order to gain access in that dramatic rescue. The whole area, cordoned off. Still very much a crime scene. David . True bravery there in sydney. David, thank you. Back here at home, and new developments after that 32hour manhunt in pennsylvania. The former marine sergeant accused of killing his exwife and five family members at several locations. 35yearold bradley stone found dead in the woods, a half a mile from his home. Taking his own life. Heavily armed s. W. A. T. Teams combing through neighborhoods. Police believe a bitter custody battle led to that rampage. Here in washington tonight, a lot of talk over that big political headline that broke today. Former Florida Governor jeb bush announcing hes actively exploring a president ial campaign. Many now asking, will this be bush versus clinton . The families have forged a certain bond over the years. Former president s clinton and h. W. There in ken nnebunkport a the bush compound. But tonight, how Many Americans are asking what barbara bush once asked and not so long ago . Arent there other families . Jon karl with the tape. Reporter could it be . Clinton versus bush again . We had a bush, defeated by a clinton, followed by another bush. And after obama, theres a clinton almost certainly running and now jeb bush, the son of that president , the brother of this one, is the first republican to formally say hes exploring a run. I have no clue if i would be a good candidate, i hope i would be. I think i could serve well as president , to be honest with you, but i dont know that, either. Reporter jeb bush has three big things going for him hispanics. Hes fluent in spanish and married to a mexicanamerican. Florida. Hes the popular former governor of a mustwin swing state. Money. Hes got support from the biggest republican donors. He knows i want him to run. If i need to reiterate it, i will. Run, jeb. I think hed be a great president. Reporter the bushes and clintons have actually become friends. But jebs mother, the former first lady, has said, when it comes to running for president , there have been too many clintons and too many bushes. It just seemed to me ridiculous in a country this size that we didnt have other families. Reporter but as jeb bush himself told us, his father would like him to run. I think weve got a split ballot amongst the bush senior family. Pretty sure thats the case. Reporter jeb bush would enter the race as a frontrunner for the republican nomination, but he is far from a sure thing. Many conservatives think he is simply too moderate on issues ranging from immigration to taxes and at least some republicans agree with his mother, that three president s bush might just be a little bit too many, david. We loved hearing from barbara bush again tonight. Jon karl right there at the white house across town. Jon, thank you. Now, to gas prices tonight. The map says it all. Now 14 states, believe it or not, with gas below 2 a gallon. American families saving more on gas than theyve saved in more than a decade. Abcs chief Business CorrespondentRebecca Jarvis tonight. Rebecca . Reporter david, these prices have been falling every day for 82 days straight. Tonight, the national average, 2. 51 for a gallon of gas. That is the 73 cents cheaper than it was this time last year. Prices expected to drop another 10 to 20 cents by christmas and continue falling into next year, when the typical American Family will spend 550 less on those gas bills. Now, there is a downside to falling gas. It is lower oil prices, which are now raising concerns about the health of the overall global economy, david. Rebecca, thank you. And of course, also affected by those oil prices, the russian ruble. Look at this. A dramatic fall over the past year and now plummeting 20 more in just the past 24 hours. The collapse being blamed on western sanctions and that falling price of oil. Well, from the ruble to the money in your wallet tonight. Here in washington, tough questions after taxpayer dollars, your dollars, were spent on a nasa project that never took off. Were talking 350 million. Behind that scaffolding tonight, a rocket testing tower sitting empty. And now, get this. Were paying to maintain it even though its empty. So, tonight, we go to find it. Abcs Senior National correspondent jim avila reporting, its your money. Reporter this is the rocket tower to nowhere, as it sits today in mississippi. Price tag 350 million. Standing proud and ready to test nasa engines. Powerful enough to propel man to the moon and mars. We got at least 21 million horsepower. Reporter theres only one problem. Nasa canceled the rocket it planned to use to take man to the moon and mars in 2010. But congress ordered them to keep building the test tower anyway. Not only that, they ordered nasa to keep it in working condition at an additional 700,000 a year. Its an example of Government Programs that are dictated to by congress, purely for their jobs. Reporter who saved the tower to nowhere . The mississippi congressional delegation, led by senator roger wicker. So today, we went to the senate to ask him if this was about saving the largest employer in the county, or space travel. Is the country benefiting from this or just mississippi . Well, the country will benefit from it. Reporter this was not pork for your state . Well, it is an investment. Well look back on it and say it was money well spent because the program has been revived. Reporter no revival yet, and the Obama Administration has no plans to ever use that tower. Senator wicker is betting your money the next president will. David . A lot of outrage. Jim, thank you. And up next here, incredible video coming in at this hour. Lost at sea and found.
