>> i'm in my car. why do i have to put out my cigarette? >> reporter: what started off as a traffic stop for failing to signal a lane change escalated in minutes. >> get out of the car now or i'm going to remove you. >> and i'm going to call my lawyer. >> i'm going to yanko out of here. >> you're going to yank me out of my car? >> reporter: the arresting officer writing in his report "bland began swinging her elbows at me and then kicked my right leg in the shin." >> i can look at the video and say wait a minute, that violates policy. >> reporter: and now a death investigation. three days after her arrest, you see commotion inside the waller county jail when bland was found dead in her cell. guards claimed she hanged herself with a garbage bag but her family doesn't believe it. >> what happened to her? why was she ever removed from her car? >> reporter: while detectives investigate whether it's murder or suicide, state leaders are urging calm amid calls of discrimination. >> we want to make certain that, quote/unquote, that people do not perceive this anything we do as it relates to this investigation as a whitewash. we want to make certain no stone is unturned. >> reporter: detectives are treating this case like a murder investigation, as they would any death in the jail. they're also looking at video sandra bland may have captured recording the officer on her own cell phone while her family awaits its own independent autopsy. reena and t.j. state and federal lawmakers are moving swiftly to enact legislation to arm military personnel working at recruiting stations. the federal law, if passed would lift a pentagon order barring most service members from carrying firearms at most military installations. it follows last week's deadly shooting at military sites in chattanooga, during which five service members were killed. some argue that armed service members might have stopped the shooter. donald trump still grabbing most of the headlines, most of the attention in the republican presidential race. now he's attacking his gop rivals, even leveling some attacks you wouldn't believe, and would you guess this as well? he's revealing the private phone number private cell number of one candidate. here now abc's jon karl. >> reporter: under fire for insulting john mccain, donald trump was at it again, hammering mccain's good friend presidential candidate lindsey graham. >> and then i watch this idiot, lindsey graham on television today, and he calls me a jackass. it's lion-like, but they're not confirming it's a lion. >> it was not a german shepherd. i can confirm that. >> lionish. >> pretty big. new and heartless scam using craigslist. people who steal dogs, then try to sell the pets online. >> this is crazy. one texas family recognized its own beloved dog on the site. abc's mara schiavocampo explains what they did next. >> reporter: dog thefts caught on camera. a 5-year-old pug taken right from its owner's yard. pit bulls taken from their chicago home and stuffed in the trunk of a car. sadly, most stolen dogs remain missing. but an increasing number of stolen pups are being found on craigslist. carol lowe from houston, texas, says her yorkshire terrier, sushi, was one of them. >> there was a hole in the fence. she snuck out from that way and then it just, you know, she kind of ran into the wrong hands. >> reporter: lowe says right after sushi ran away a dog that looked identical to her was advertised for sale on craigslist. while an initial attempt to the confront the seller failed, she says seven months later, she spotted another posting. so lowe and a friend went to check it out, armed with a microchip reader. the dog looked slightly different. the pup online darker than sushi had been before disappearing. but the microchip reader proved lowe's suspicion. >> i finally, very slowly realized oh, my gosh, this is really sushi. i said, kara, this is your dog. >> reporter: so lowe paid the $250 asking price to get her dog back. dog theft isn't uncommon. almost 350 dogs have been swiped so far this year. experts say the first thing you should do if you think your dog has been taken, check online ads. if you see them there, alert authorities right away. have all of your ownership paper handy and always make sure your pup has a microchip so you can claim your dog back. >> people out there who are predators who are looking to make money by selling dogs especially in the age of social media. >> reporter: mara schiavocampo, abc news, new york. >> wow. well another dog-related story, this one nothing but nice. the dog involved is shep. >> shep's owner is a guy from the military. his name is jerome. he was hours away from deploying overseas. he didn't have anywhere to leave his pup for months that he was going to be gone so he had to just in an emergency, posted an ad on reddit but a little while later, shep was being dropped off with a family in sacramento. >> the family has close ties to the military. several members are veterans. they wanted to give shep a good home while jerome is off serving our nation. >> that's good to help out there, last minute. it was an emergency. he didn't know what he was going to do. >> he didn't know what he was going to do. we should say, shep is pretty old, has a hip problem. it was good that he was able to stay at a nice home. >> he's in good care. when we come back, we'll find out what will it take to get michael j. fox to play marty mcfly again. also how president obama would prevent a television tragedy. >> i'm in my car. why do i have to put out my cigarette? >> well, you can step on out now. >> i don't have to step out of my car. >> step out of the car. get out of the car now or i'm going to remove you. >> and i'm calling my lawyer. >> i'm going to yank you out of here. >> you're going to yank me out of my car? don't touch me. >> get out of the car! get out of the car! i will light you up. >> what you're seeing here now is the jail cell where bland was found hanging from the privacy partition. jail officials say it was a suicide, insisting no one entered her cell before her body was discovered. the case is being treated as a murder investigation, however. and bland's family still awaiting the results of a new autopsy. now the gunman who killed five servicemen in chattanooga, we're learning that his uncle is being questioned in jordan and investigators offering new insight into a possible motive in connection to extremist views. we get the details from abc's brian ross. >> reporter: just five days after it was attacked, its personnel unarmed, the chattanooga military recruiting office opened its doors again. >> we are open for business. >> reporter: with new recruits including tristan wood eager to sign up because of what happened. >> it just pushed me over the edge, and i'm mad about it. >> reporter: across the country, governors in seven states ordered personnel at national guard recruitment centers to arm themselves something a top general said the pentagon may also order. >> we should seriously consider it. in some cases i think it's appropriate. >> reporter: as the fbi narrowed its focus into the motivation of the shooter, mohammad abdulazeez, officials said they now have evidence he was a follower of the radical american cleric and al qaeda recruiter anwar al awlaki. awlaki was killed in a u.s. air strike in yemen almost four years ago, but his recorded messages in idiosyncratic english -- >> never underestimate the power of fear -- >> reporter: -- continue to lure young muslim men to carry out acts of violence in the name of allah. in fact, abdulazeez used his phone to search internet sites that he hoped could absolve him of his sins on earth by allah if he carried out jihad against u.s. military targets. brian ross, abc news, new york. well are you keeping count? i hate to tell you. >> reporter: fellow republicans have denounced trump's comments as ridiculous and offensive while trump continued to throw insults. ohio governor john kasich joined the republican presidential field. >> so i want to tell you that it's this whole business of the american dream, isn't it that we can all work to make sure that next generation is going to be in a position of greater strength than what we received. >> reporter: kasich says he's looking ahead to a potential general election match-up with democratic presidential candidate hillary clinton. in an exclusive interview with abc news chief anchor george stephanopoulos, kasich says the key to the race will be vision. reena, t.j.? david sweat, the man who escaped from a maximum security prison in new york is offering shocking information about life on the run. even the movie he compares with his prison break. sweat was back in custody three weeks on the run. here's abc's linzie janis. >> reporter: new details about how david sweat plotted his prison escape. the investigation's top cop speaking to abc news. >> sweat seemed to be the mastermind not only of the escape, but the leader, if you will, when he got out. >> reporter: sweat telling police he was the brains, comparing his prison break to the one in "the shawshank redemption." for nearly six months, sweat roaming the underground tunnels beneath the prison. at 11:30 each night, crawling out of a hole in his cell, shimmying down a pipe into those tunnels, even bringing with him a second set of clothes to hide the dirt and a fan to keep him cool making it back each morning by the 5:30 a.m. check. sweat eventually spotting the blistering hot steam pipe leading to the outside world telling police he waited until may when the steam was shut off to put his plan into action, spending four grueling weeks cutting a hole in that pipe. sweat said his partner in crime, richard matt had to shed 40 pounds just to be able to squeeze through that pipe. meanwhile, the state inspector general's office telling us they're still investigating how the escape was able to happen at all. reena and t.j.? >> thank you. a new study finds memory loss much harder on older women than men. older women with impaired memory worsened almost twice as fast as men. nearly two-thirds of americans with alzheimers are women. women 65 and older have a one in six chance of developing alzheimers. that's compared with 1 in 11 chance for men. it's unclear why that's the case. minimum wage workers in los angeles county are just a few years away from earning $15 an hour. the los angeles county board of supervisors approved the increase tuesday night. wages will increase in steps until hitting $15 an hour in 2020. it mirrors similar action by the city of los angeles. later today in new york, state's wage board's expected to approve a new minimum hourly wage for the state's 200,000 fast-food workers. and a bizarre scene last night in philadelphia. an exploding atm. police say surveillance video from nearby businesses apparently shows two people approaching the machine, then running away. moments later, there was a blast, debris flying about 100 feet away. no cash was lost from that machine. the california interstate where a bridge was washed away by floodwaters will partially reopen friday. i-10 is the main route connecting los angeles and phoenix. drivers have to scramble for alternate routes since sunday when the bridge collapsed. travel will still be slow because just one lane in each direction will be open to traffic. here's a look at your hump day weather forecast. pleasantly warm in the mid-atlantic. typical heat and humidity for most of texas and the gulf coast. mostly dry in the midwest. showers and storms possible from oklahoma to the carolinas. >> it will be 105 in phoenix, above average for this time of year. pleasant in chicago and detroit. around 80 degrees in atlanta, miami in the low 90s. barry bonds says he is relieved and humbled now that the government has dropped its nearly decade-long steroids prosecution of him. bonds is baseball's career home run leader. he was convicted four years ago in connection with misleading grand jury testimony. but that conviction was overturned in april. prosecutors had until today to file for a supreme court review but they say they won't be doing that. turning to the nfl now, and the commissioner roger goodell, says there's no timeline in a decision of quarterback tom brady's appeal of his four-game deflategate suspension. goodell says the league wants to make sure the league considers all aspects of brady's appeal. he says a decision will be made as quickly as possible. and here's a guy who simply is incredible. he's the new french language scrabble world champion. >> nigel richards is the name. we said he's the french language scrabble champ, but the man doesn't speak french. he won the title after studying words from a french dictionary for just a few weeks. >> one scrabble expert calls richards the best scrabble player of all times and says his achievement is like tiger woods at his prime taking up tennis and then going on to win wimbledon the next year. >> really? they wanted to test them in the water. >> goodness. >> a lifeguard comes, and maybe you can say he saved them from themselves, called them out of the water. they didn't get in there with the so-called cages. but i don't know. is this a lot of hysteria? and give me some more. the magnificent mashup of two of summer's greatest tastes. ice cream and s'mores. we'll take you into the "insomniac kitchen" to see how the sweet treat is made. it's wednesday, july 22nd. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now" with t.j. holmes and reena ninan. and hello to you all. we have to start with that explosive dash cam video released overnight in the sandra bland case. it shows us the moment a texas state trooper pulled her over, tried to drag her from her car, then pulled out a stun gun. all of this is caught on camera. >> as investigators try to determine how bland ended up dead in her jail cell three days later, some state officials are condemning the officer's behavior, saying he violated arrest procedures. with more, here's abc's ryan owens. >> you seem very irritated. >> i am. i really am. >> reporter: dashcam video just released shows how quickly this texas traffic stop escalates. 28-year-old sandra bland pulled over for changing lanes without using a turn signal repeatedly refuses to comply. >> do you mind putting out your cigarette, please, if you don't mind? >> i'm in my car. why do i have to put out my cigarette? >> well, you can step on out now. >> i don't have to step out. >> step out of the car. >> reporter: the trooper tries to yank bland out of the car when she won't get out and places her under arrest. much of what happens next is just off camera. in this arrest affidavit, the trooper says, once in handcuffs, "bland began swinging her elbows at me and then kicked my right leg in the shin." authorities also releasing this video from just outside bland's jail cell three days after that traffic stop. it shows the moment a female guard leans over to check on her. the officer rushes out and gestures for help after seeing bland hanging with a crash bag around her neck. three minutes later, the paramedics run in to help. it's too late. >> that video does not show the inside of her cell, but here it is. they found her hanging from this privacy partition. and the coroner says what happened here was a suicide. >> reporter: the jail video also shows no one entering or exiting bland's cell in the hours before her death, but her distraught family still doesn't believe it saying bland just took a new job here in texas and had so much to live for. >> what happened to sandra bland? in police custody, what happened to her? why was she ever removed from her car? >> reporter: a few months back, bland posted online she suffered from depression and ptsd. the district attorney here says he thinks this really was a suicide, but he'll keep investigating it as a homicide until he's completely sure. ryan owens, abc news, hempstead, texas. well, we have new details this morning about the gunman behind the shooting rampage on two military sites in chattanooga, tennessee. officials say mohammad abdulazeez searched jihadist websites on his cell phone. he allegedly wrote about anwar al awlaki. he's the cleric who urged attacks on the u.s. before he was killed in a drone strike. there's word an uncle to abdulazeez had been detained in jordan for questioning. a large crowd turned out in suburban atlanta for a memorial honoring the youngest victim of that chattanooga shooting. marine lance corporal squire "skip" wells was 21 years old. his final words in a text to his girlfriend, "active shooter." the governor of georgia has ordered flags to fly at half-staff through the end of the month. two british men are in custody this morning on charges of plotting terrorism. one is accused of planning an attack against u.s. military personnel at an air force base the u.s. shares with the british military. prosecutors say the 24-year-old wanted to enter the base and run over american servicemen with a car. he's also charged along with a second suspect of planning to travel to syria to join isis. meanwhile, the pentagon says this man, a key figure in a dangerous offshoot of al qaeda, was killed in a u.s. air strike. he was the leader of the so-called khorasan group and was the subject of a $7 million reward offered by the u.s. for information leading to the capture of him or his death. it's believed he was among the few people who received advanced word of the 9/11 attacks before they happened. the donald trump show rolls on. trump has moved beyond now criticizing senator john mccain about not being a war hero and he is now focused on his republican rivals. he told a south carolina audience that former texas governor rick perry wears glasses so people will think he's smart. that's awesome. then he gave out senator lindsey graham's phone number, his personal cell number, to the crowd and urged people to call it. graham later tweeted that he is going to have to now get a new phone number because of that. also, trump insisted he's not against mexicans. >> and i have a lot of respect for mexico, by the way. a lot of people said, oh, he doesn't like -- i love mexico and i love the mexican people. i've had thousands of mexicans working for me. i sell apartments for millions of dollars to people from mexico. they love me. they love me. >> case closed. even president obama now weighing in on donald trump. he appeared on "the daily show with jon stewart." >> i'm sure the republicans are enjoying mr. trump's current dominance of their primary. >> anything that makes them look less crazy. >> i'm in my car. why do i have to put out my cigarette? >> reporter: what started off as a traffic stop for failing to signal a lane change escalated in minutes. >> get out of the car now or i'm going to remove you. >> and i'm going to call my lawyer. >> i'm going to yank you out of here. >> okay you're going to yank me out of my car? don't touch me. >> get out of the car! >> yank me out of my own car. >> get out of your car! i will light you up! >> wow. >> get out! >> wow. >> get out! >> reporter: sandra bland demanding to know why she's being arrested combative as a bystander also records the incident nearby. >> you just slammed my head into the ground. do you not care about that? >> reporter: the arresting officer writing in his report "bland began swinging her elbows at me and then kicked my right leg in the shin." >> i can look at the video and say, with a wait a minute, that violates policy. >> reporter: and now a death investigation. three days after her arrest, you see commotion inside the waller county jail when bland was found dead in her cell. guards claim she hanged herself with a garbage bag, but her family doesn't believe it. >> what happened to her? why was she ever removed from her car? >> reporter: while detectives investigate whether it's murder or suicide, state leaders are urging calm amid calls of discrimination. >> we want to make certain that, quote/unquote, that people do not perceive this, anything we do as it relates to this investigation as a whitewash. we want to make certain no stone is unturned. >> reporter: detectives are treating this case like a murder investigation, as they would any death in the jail. they're also looking at video sandra bland may have captured recording the officer on her own cell phone while her family awaits its own independent autopsy. reena and t.j. state and federal lawmakers are moving swiftly to enact legislation to arm military personnel working at recruiting stations. the federal law, if passed, would lift a pentagon order barring most service members from carrying firearms at most military installations. it follows last week's deadly shooting at military sites in chattanooga, during which five service members were killed. some argue that armed service members might have stopped the shooter. donald trump still grabbing most of the headlines, most of the attention in the republican presidential race. now he's attacking his gop rivals, even leveling some attacks you wouldn't believe, and would you guess this as well? he's revealing the private phone number, private cell number of one candidate. here now abc's jon karl. >> reporter: under fire for insulting john mccain, donald trump was at it again, hammering mccain's good friend presidential candidate lindsey graham. >> and then i watch this idiot, lindsey graham, on television today, and he calls me a jackass. "he's a jackass." >> reporter: and then he went further, actually giving out graham's private cell phone number. >> i don't know if it's the right number. let's try it. 202 -- >> reporter: and still stinging, trump's comments on mccain's military service. >> he's not a war hero. >> he's a war hero. >> he is a war hero -- >> 5 1/2 years. >> he's a war hero because he was captured. i like people that weren't captured, okay? it's lion-like, but they're not confirming it's a lion. what else can we say it is? >> it was not a german shepherd. i can confirm that. >> lionish. >> yeah. >> okay. >> pretty big. well a new and heartless scam using craigslist people who steal dogs, then try to sell the pets online. >> this is crazy. one texas family recognized its own beloved dog on the site. abc's mara schiavocampo explains what they did next. >> reporter: dog thefts caught on camera. a 5-year-old pug taken right from its owner's yard. pit bulls taken from their chicago home and stuffed in the trunk of a car. sadly, most stolen dogs remain missing. but an increasing number of stolen pups are being found on craigslist. kara lowe from houston, texas, says her yorkshire terrier, sushi, is one of them. >> there was a hole in the fence. she snuck out from that way and then it just, you know, she kind of ran into the wrong hands. >> reporter: lowe says right after sushi ran away, a dog that looked identical to her was advertised for sale on craigslist. while an initial attempt to the confront the seller failed, she says seven months later, she spotted another posting. so lowe and a friend went to check it out, armed with a microchip reader. the dog looked slightly different. the pup online darker than sushi had been before disappearing. but the microchip reader proved lowe's suspicion. >> i finally, very slowly realized, oh, my gosh, this is really sushi. i said, kara, this is your dog. >> reporter: so, lowe paid the $250 asking price to get her dog back. dog theft isn't uncommon. almost 350 dogs have been swiped so far this year. experts say the first thing you should do if you think your dog has been taken, check online ads. if you see them there, alert authorities right away. have all of your ownership paper handy and always make sure your pup has a microchip so you can claim your dog back. >> people out there who are predators who are looking to make money by selling dogs, especially in the age of social media. >> reporter: mara schiavocampo, abc news, new york. >> wow. well, another dog-related story, this one nothing but nice. the dog involved is shep. >> shep's owner is a guy from the military. his name is jerome. he was hours away from deploying overseas. he didn't have anywhere to leave his pup for months that he was going to be gone, so he had to, just in an emergency, posted an ad on reddit, but a little while later, shep was being dropped off with a family in sacramento. >> the family has close ties to the military. several members are veterans. so they wanted to give shep a good home while jerome is off serving our nation. >> that's good to help out there, last minute. it was an emergency. he didn't know what he was going to do. >> he didn't know what he was going to do. we should say, shep is pretty old. he has a little bit of a hip problem, so it was good that he was able to stay at a nice home. >> he's in good care. when we come back, we'll find out what will it take to get michael j. fox to play marty mcfly again. also, how president obama would prevent a television tragedy.
