A gunman took the hostages at a popular cafe not far from the famed opera house during the middle of monday morning traffic. They ran into the arms of police. Australian Police Believe this man seen moving around behind glass and apparently acting alone is holding several people hostage inside a cafe in the Central Business district of sydney. This is a very disturbing incident. We have an armed offender in premises holding an undisclosed number of hostages. Reporter the man forced hostages to raise their arms against the cafe windows and hold up several islamic flags. The flag is not specific to any terror organization. Even though it has been used by jihadist groups. We dont yet know the motivation of the perpetrator. Reporter the takeover of the lindt cafe monday morning spread terror through downtown sydney normally packed with Office Workers and tourists. A woman just shouted out, he has a gun. Everyone started running away like crazy. Some witnesses went to go in and saw a man with a sawed off shotgun. Police pushed bystanders to safety. I walked toward him and ushered me quickly around the corner. Reporter some inside the cafe managed to escape. Its still not known how many hostages are inside the cafe. We are at this stage continuing to secure and make sure that were doing all we can to bring this to a peaceful outcome. I have full confidence in the Police Commissioner and the incredible work of the New South Wales police force. Where this lindt cafe is based is called martin place. Its a big area for shopping for banks, businesses, even the u. S. Consulate is about a twominute walk from this very location. State department announcing they evacuated that building and other businesses and state Department Employees are at a secure location. People who know sydney from the one image that may come to peoples minds is the opera house there. Theyve canceled their performances at least for tonight. Youre seeing this in sydney. World capitals all over the place, including in london, new york, just big cities around the world are now taking notice and are on alert trying to figure out whats going on there. We turn from that for a moment to families who lost loved ones in the Sandy Hook School shooting. They are expected to file suit today against the maker of the gun used in that shooting. It was two years ago adam lanza killed 20 children and six adults using a bushmaster assault rifle. Lanza killed himself as police moved in. There were no Public Events to mark the anniversary yesterday in newtown, connecticut. An arrest in the shooting death of an Auburn University football player. An argument led to the shooting of jailll mitchell near the Jakell Mitchell near the auburn campus. Mitchells girlfriend says he was arguing with someone with a third party opened fire. The hunt for an accused killer picks up again. The escapee and two other men overpowered their guard and sprayed lysol in his face on saturday. One of the men was caught in a Movie Theater parking lot two hours away. Another fond at his grandmothers house. Demarcus woodward who faces a murder charge is still on the loose. Another week of protests are getting under way across the country. Thousands continuing to rally. People of all ages gathered at a church in chicago chanting black lives matter. They made their way through several neighborhoods and on to an expressway. And protesters turned out in the bay area. You can see the terrified looks right there on their faces. The hostages were taken by a gunman early this morning in the busy district in australias biggest city. A popular spot for tourists. Its not far from the opera house where tonights performances are canceled. Reporter these pictures. A hostage situation in a shop in the busy Business District of australias capital city. I heard some witnesses say that they went to go in and saw a man with a sawed off shotgun. Reporter heavily armed police in s. W. A. T. Gear surrounding the area and evacuating nearby buildings. We dont yet know the motivation of the perpetrator. We dont yet know whether these are politically motivated although there are some indications it could be.
