john muller and diana perez. good monday morning everybody. we begin this half hour with at least a dozen people killed in a dangerous storm system. moving across the middle of the nation. >> 17 states on high alert for at least the next couple of days. the system is driving damaging winds, heavy rains and even tornadoes touching down with deadly consequences. >> around 5:30 p.m., the first reports that a tornado touched down in quapaw, a small community in northeastern oklahoma. the destruction widespread. >> there is so much debris, it's hard to even tell what was what. this was a strong tornado. >> the extent of the damage is an indication of just how powerful this tornado was. residential and commercial buildings utterly destroyed, reduced to splinters. roofs lifted from structures still standing send residents walking through the debris trying to make sense of it all. another tornado on the ground in upland, nebraska. more funnel clouds reported in iowa, kansas and missouri. they're all part of a massive storm system that extends throughout tornado alley, from the central plains down to texas, louisiana and mississippi. heavy rain near odessa, missouri brought visibility down near zero, making driving virtually impossible. strong winds along i-70, knocked a semi over on ids side and damaged several homes. golf ball-sized hail pummeled arkansas and parts of oklahoma. cleanup was just getting started in north carolina in the wake of an ef-3 tornado this weekend. an 11-month-old baby was killed, more than 200 homes destroyed. >> it broke my heart because i lost everything. thank the lord for not having me here. i probably wouldn't be standing here right now. >> now they're hoping for the best and bracing for another round of violent storms. >> just so much devastation. 11 deaths in arkansas confirmed. one in oklahoma confirmed. 25 injuries in kansas confirmed. >> that's right. one death in kansas, although that's not linked to the tornadoes just yet. i mean, the information is sprinkling in. we may have more. there's a lot of destruction out there. there's no telling when the tornadoes are going to end. because now they're just moving east. >> we'll be watching. >> absolutely. the threat of severe weather far from over as the dangerous fronts move east. >> our coverage continues at accuweather with meteorologist jim dickey. good morning, jim. >> good morning, john and diana. we're entering the heart of severe weather season. as such, we'll see dangerous thunderstorms after an active weekend. area of low pressure responsible for all of that, more or less, will slowly crawl its way eastward, sparking off rounds of thunderstorms here. the threat slowly shifting its way eastward. soaking rainfall into the northeast, back in the upper midwest, plains, upper midwest could see snow mixing in, in spots as well. as far as the thunderstorms are concerned, the threat shifts a bit further eastward. through the early morning hours, still storms, missouri, arkansas, across louisiana, shifting eastward throughout the day. watch out in the tennessee valley, threat for tornadoes and damaging winds and large hail. john and diana, back to you. >> jim, thank you. the coast guard has been searching for a pilot in the northern part of san francisco bay area after two small planes collided in midair, the two aircraft had taken off about 20 miles north. one plane landed in the water. the other pilot along with his wife managed to land safely. neither were injured. calling it the most difficult search in human history, australia's prime minister announced the hunt for malaysia airlines flight 370 is entering a new phase. the underwater search will expand as soon as more sophisticated vehicles can be brought in. the aerial search is being suspended. the prime minister assured the families that searchers will do everything humanly possible to solve this mystery. the fbi joined in the investigation for a charleston, west virginia, man off the coast of south florida. he jumped off a cruise ship. 30-year-old james miller was a passenger on the bahamas celebration crews liner. he disappeared 27 miles off of delray beach. coast guard crews have been searching for him since sunday. nba players union and the -- onners calling for immediate sanctions against los angeles clippers owner donald sterling after he was allegedly caught on tape making racially insensitive remarks. the clippers players weren't commenting before the game against the warriors. as clayton sandell reports, they made their feelings crystal clear. >> just before tipoff, the l.a. clippers took to the court with their warmup shirts turned inside out, the team name hidden in protest. donald sterling was nowhere to be seen either. fallout over what tmz sports says is a recording appearing to catch sterling on a racist rant. he's allegedly heard arguing with girlfriend v. stiviano over her photo with nba great magic johnson. >> don't put it on instagram so the world has to see so they have to call me. don't bring him to my games, okay? >> the clippers have not verified if the voice on the recording is sterling. but say the team owner is emphatic that what is reflected on the recording is not consistent with his views, beliefs or feelings. the recording was first posted by tmz. stiviano's attorney says this is her voice. >> people call you and tell you that i have black people on my instagram and it bothers you? >> yeah, it bothers me a lot. if you want to broadcast that you're associating with black people. >> a longer version angeles. president obama is arriving in the philippines where he's expected to announce a ten-year security agreement allowing for laerj u.s. military presence there. the agreement would give american forces temporary access to camps and allow them to position fighters jets and ships. this is the last stop on the president's four-nation tour. the president is still closely watching the unfolding crisis in ukraine. he's expected to stiffen sanctions against president putin as early as today. a top security official says the sanctions will be against people in putin's inner circle and the companies they control that have a significant impact on the russian economy. >> a crowd of several hundred pro-russian activists stormed a broadcasting center demanding that russian state channels be put back on the air. the government blocked the broadcast of the russian channels calling them propaganda tools for the kremlin. israel's leaders are warning the world to learn from the mistakes of the past. the holocaust remembrance service. prime minister benjamin netanyahu likened it to iran. iran denies the holocaust happened. they have called for the destruction of israel. more events are planned for today. israel got surprising support ahead of the holocaust memorial day from the palestinian president mahmoud abbas. he called it the most heinous crime of modern history. many israelis are skeptical of his intentions. there was a unity government formed with the palestinian group that wants israel's destruction. topping health headlines. new evidence that marijuana could help treat the symptoms of parkinson's disease. the study published in the journal clinical neuropharmacology. it involved 22 parkinson's patients. researchers found that smoking marijuana improved specific motor symptoms, including tremors. doctors say it eases pain and helps patients sleep with few side effects. a british surgeon discovered what could be a medical breakthrough for treating wounded knees. the new procedure is said to leave the knee stronger and more stable by using a ligament that doctors didn't know existed until just six months ago. that doctor is teaching the new procedure to surgeons worldwide. you may never need to visit a car wash again. nissan testing an exterior paint that repels water and oil. the paint is currently being tested on the european version of the nissan two popes on the same day, former popes, made saint because one was perceived as sort of the father of the modern, the liberal force in the church and then john ii was perceived as the one who put the lid back on, protected the more conservative. they really appealed to slightly different bases, of course, and both on the same day. >> that's right. in fact, pope john xxiii actually wasn't canonized for so long because there was a second miracle that was a requirement. but him and pope francis are so similar in their background, both from humble backgrounds. pope francis almost decided this was going to be his first line of business to eliminate that requirement. so that pope john -- rather pope xxiii could become a saint today. there you have it. >> they supposedly share that folksy style. heading east. >> 17 states on high alert this morning under the threat of heavy rains, large hail and tornadoes like this one in oklahoma causing widespread damage in quapaw killing at least one person there. >> another twister touched down in mayflower, arkansas. at least 11 people have been killed in that state alone. >> abc's alex perez has the latest from little rock. >> reporter: a tornado has turned deadly touching down in the town of quapaw, oklahoma. near odessa, missouri, visibility near zero. blinding heavy rain making driving nearly impossible. the strong winds along i-70 flipping this semi on its side and damaging several homes. from nebraska all the way to louisiana residents are preparing for a potentially dangerous storm that could spawn violent tornadoes and lead to heavy flooding. in the crosshairs, arkansas where a tornado watch has many on high alert. in arkansas and parts of oklahoma, golf ball-sized hail. across tornado alley, a rush on tornado safe rooms, virtually indestructible shelters that can survive the fury of an ef-5 tornado. in north carolina, the cleanup just getting started after an ef-3 tornado touched down on saturday, damaging or course this is the time of the year, yesterday was think third anniversary of that 122 tornado day that struck mississippi, alabama, tennessee virginia, georgia. killed 316 people, three years ago yesterday. now of course this. >> an amazing time back in 2011. by the way, april 25th to the 28th, those three days saw 358 tornadoes across 21 states from texas to new york, southern canada, just about everybody got it an 348 people were killed. >> wow. so many suffering this morning as well. wish them the best. >> absolutely. so many fatalities already, caution going out to a huge part of the country as a storm system moves east. >> let's get the latest from jim dickey. good morning, jim. >> good morning, john and diana. we saw dangerous thunderstorms on sunday and more where that came from. all from an area of low pressure. a pocket of colder air that is swirling across the mid section, the plains here. it will track eastward sparking rounds of thunderstorms through the next 48 hour at least. again, this slowly moves its way eastward. soaking rainfall for the upper midwest to the northeast. even snow in portions of minnesota, perhaps ice here too. as far as the storms are concerned, the threat shifts further eastward here today. through the morning hours across arkansas, louisiana into texas with gusty winds. in the tennessee valley in the afternoon and evening. john and diana, back to you. jim dickey, thank you. one pilot missing after two small planes collided over the northern part of the san francisco bay. one plane went into the bay. the other landed safely. the coast guard is searching for the second pilot near where debris was spotted in the water. both were taken off from a small airport north of san francisco. the latest on the teenager who survived a flight from san jose to hawaii hidden in the wheel well of a jumbo jet. the 15-year-old's father said he is planning to go to hawaii to reunite with his son and bring him home to california. the father insists his son is a good kid. he said the boy was struggling to adjust to life in the u.s. after the family fled from civil war in somalia. no classes at the connecticut high school where a 16-year-old girl was stabbed to death on friday. a community-wide candlelight vigil is planned tonight to remember the victim, marin sanchez. the medical examiner said she died of stab wounds to the neck and chest. the suspect, a fellow student, remains under observation at a medical center. the nba could decide early as today whether to take action against los angeles clippers owner donald sterling. the scandal over a racist rant attributed to sterling is growing. according to tmz his estranged wife has come forward calling him small minded and despicable. here's abc's sandra bookman. >> reporter: as the l.a. clippers turn their warmup suits inside out in an act of silent protest, owner donald sterling wasn't in his customary seat. he's lying low. >> donald sterling has no idea what he's wrought. >> it bothers me a lot if you want to broadcast that you are associating with black people. >> reporter: tmz sports that released the recording claims that is the voice of donald sterling reprimanding his ex- girlfriend being photographed with nba legend magic johnson. >> don't put him on an instagram for the world to have to -- so they have to call me. don't bring him into my games, okay? >> he has to give up the team. nobody's going to want to play for the clippers ever again. >> reporter: the backlash has been sealed, especially from sterling's own team that considered alleged refusal to rent apartments to minorities. the cases were settled. a statement issued by the clippers says the audio is, quote, not consistent with nor does it reflect his views, beliefs or feeling. the nba promises a swift resolution. but to some it's a slam-dunk that sterling has to go. >> going to have to demonstrate zero tolerance and as much outrage as some of the players and fans are expressing now. >> reporter: abc news, new york. >> an addiction to facebook may be responsible for a fatal car crash. police say a 32-year-old north carolina woman died when her car crossed the median and hit an oncoming truck just a minute before the first emergency call reporting the wreck. she had posted on facebook how much a song made her happy. investigators also found she had been posting selfies while driving. >> my goodness. fire crews in lexington, kentucky, have rescued a man who was trapped between two downtown buildings for five hours. the space where he was trapped is a little more than a foot wide. rescuers believe he fell from the roof and couldn't get out. what likely saved his life is one of the building was the police department where employees do not take the weekend off from work. >> he's very lucky that he's alive. he's also lucky that somebody was able to hear him screaming for help. >> he was bruised and bloody but is expected to recover. investigators are trying to figure out what he was doing on the roof in the first place. coast guard crews have been searching off the coast of south florida for a man who reportedly jumped overboard while on a cruise ship. 30-year-old james miller is said to have jumped over the rail of bahamas celebration, the cruise liner, 27 miles east of delray beach. there are few details from investigators. we know this morning the fbi has joined that investigation. congress considering a bipartisan bill that could affect the way airlines advertise fares. the airline industry wants to do away with the all-in-one price that carriers have been forced to adhere to the last few years. advertised ticket prices must include taxes and other surcharges. lobbyists say other industries are allowed to advertise a base price for products and service. millions of soccer lovers will be pouring in to brazil for the world cup this june. over the weekend another sport took center stage. >> 150 expert pole dancers >>
