milder temperatures, 59 degrees for washington, 72 for atlanta. the hot spot again is phoenix at 82 degrees. now to the ukraine for a developing story. deadly government crack-down overnight. fire still burning in kiev central this morning. protesters are huddling after a night of violence. thousands of riot police attacked their encampment, then protesters set a ring of fire. at least 25 people died. the government took a harder line after getting a $2 billion financial lifeline from russia. teen education activists is doing everything possible to help save an entire generation of syrian children victimized by that civil war. malala yousafzai visited a refugee camp in jordan visiting children living in filth and deprived of education. she said her foundation plans to open camps as soon as possible in 2012. the pakistan native was shot in the head after denouncing taliban rule. the federal investigators are in response to the commuter rail that killed people in december. they want inward and outward facing cameras to simultaneously monitor the conductor and tracks. it's also calling for speed limit signs at all locations where permanent speed restrictions are in place. the >> felt like something came up from the bottom and hit the bottom of the plane. >> then stuff and people were flying all over the place. >> reporter: it was severe turbulence and those not buckled in were tossed about. >> he flew up out of his seat and actually hit the ceiling of the -- ceiling of the aircraft, and came down and landed on a lady next to him. >> reporter: the plane seemed to fall for nearly five seconds, its right wing dipping. as this simulation shows, a mother started screaming when she lost control of her child. a baby ending up in the air, landing in another seat, luckily unhurt. it's impossible to hold a baby in high g forces. crash simulators show how a child can be pulled from their parents' grasp. the reason, a 20-pound baby's weight can triple during severe event and our arms are just not strong enough. there is one approved restraint and of course you can use a car seat. if you fly, turbulence is a common occurrence, but it can happen without any warning and those who are normally injured are members of the crew. the last ten years on record show on average there are 32 injuries every year. and two thirds of those are to crew members. often flight attendants. >> right behind my right-hand shoulder is the steward es. i seen her flying back and forth. >> reporter: one flight attendant hospitalized in serious condition. two others were treated and released after flight in that turbulent air. david kerley, abc news, washington. united airlines is apologizing for a nationwide computer glitch that added to delays. the computer is used to check in passengers and boarding passes. it led to major ranting on twitter. united insists the problem has been resolved. america could have a new multimillionaire by this time tomorrow. the powerball >> making such a difference. so sweet. this morning's other big problems -- problems from a weather warm up. that's been forcing postponements in indiana. indiana university men's basketball game was canceled after a 50-pound piece of metal fell from the ceiling's facing and fell in the seats below. the roof gave way from pressure of melting ice and snow. they say it is strictly ornamental and the roof is structurally sound. in pennsylvania an elderly man not so lucky. he had to be pulled out from under his carport. the man was in his 70s. he was treated at the hospital. he did not suffer any life-threatening injuries. >> extreme winter weather causing seriously frayed nerves. south of ann arbor, michigan, a man so angry, he pulled out a gun on the windshield. the shooter who has a concealed pistol license for the gun turned himself into police. drought-stricken california is blamed for jacking up milk prices. families could see a dramatic rise in what they pay for milk. skyrocketing as much as 60 sent skyrocketing as much as 60 cents a gallon. americans are paying more for cheese after a jump in price last month. weather ushering in a deadly threat more than usual and that's the venomous snake that comes out of hibernation in the spring. they are already spotted across san diego county. 800 people are bitten by rattle snakes each year. >> you just gave a lot of people the hibby jibbies with that one. >> oh, yeah. >> now a look at the northeast weather. expect a mix of rain and snow. much of the midwest will see plenty of rain. snow showers from idaho and colorado to the dakotas. western washington and oregon will see another 1 to 3 inches of rain. and in the cascades, another 1 to 2 feet of snow. >> across the country, 60s in denver, and memphis, 70s in los angeles, dallas and atlanta. 80s in phoenix and miami. now to capitol hill where two democrats are stepping down from congress. rush holt announced he will not run again next year. he will retire after 16 years. the 65-year-old holt holds a doct doctorate in academia. and california representative gloria negrete mc will retire after one term to run for county supervisor in her hometown of san bernardino. democrats expect to hang on to her set with little challenge. and while president obama pushes for raising the minimum wage, the new report is reigning the heated debate on capitol hill. the report by the nonpartisan congressional budget office finds that raising minimum wage would boost incomes of 16.5 million workers lifting 900,000 families out of poverty. but it could also result in a net loss of about half a million jobs. economists appear to be evenly divided on the report. president obama taking on climate change all by himself. he announced plans to set tough new fuel standards for delivery trucks. they make up for about 4% of the vehicles on the road, but account for 25% of the carbon and fuel consumption. mr. obama says making them cleaner will drop consumer prices and bring down greenhouse emissions. >> every mile we gain in fuel efficiency is worth thousands of dollars of savings every year. >> car and truck manufacturers are pushing back against these tougher standards and republicans say the president should not act unilaterally. the president says the new standards will be drafted by next march. we know with the olympics going on, with winter drag on, but maybe you didn't know this is national future farmers of america week. now you know. >> all right. part of the whole thing yesterday was drive your tractor to school day. that's exactly what some guys in indiana did. national future farmers of america say it's all about raising agriculture awareness. >> they want us to realize where our food comes from and that's a good way it draw some attention. and probably cool for the kids, too. >> yeah, why not. >> it's parked outside. did you see it? >> at this point, i do, yes. >> reporter: she was juror number four. valerie is her first name. home care nurse administrator. she ask we not give her full name. for the first time we're hearing what happened inside deadlocked jury room where jurors decided the fate of michael dunn. when you went to the jury room you thought michael dunn was guilty of killing a 17-year-old boy. >> yes, sir. >> reporter: what convinced you? >> to me it was wasn't necessary. >> reporter: most of the jurors, she told us, agreed with her. you all took your first poll on guilt or innocence on the murder of jordan davis. what was the vote? >> 10-2. >> reporter: ten people thinking he was guilty? >> yes, sir. >> reporter: and two said -- >> self-defense. >> reporter: 47-year-old michael dunn never denied he shot and killed 17-year-old jordan davis, but from the witness stand he pleaded it was self-defense. during his testimony dunn said he was sitting in the car, waiting on his fiancee. fourteen agers parnged in an suv. he asked them to turn it down. >> my eardrums were vibrating. >> reporter: dunn insided what he saw looked like a gun. the teenagers who survived have always maintained there was no gun. valerie says that was a key moment in the trial. dunn's insistence he believed he was in danger. page 25 reads, the use of deadly force is justifiable if michael dunn reasonably believes force is necessary to prevent great immeant death. >> we took a poll. two on this -- two was justified and the rest were not justified. >> reporter: why were you and the others so convinced that gun was guilty? ukraine, months of peaceful protests against the government with the alliance with russia ended overnight when thousands of riot police attacked demonstrators. >> as you can see in the images, a few are encamped in independent square but their cause may be doomed. kirit radia with the report. >> reporter: ukraine is on the brink. thousands of protesters locked in a deadly fiery standoff with police. burning tents and tires and fire bombs keeping police at bay. protest leader, former heavyweight boxing champ, called this square an island of freedom, klitschko. looks more like a war zone. fireworks lobbed like missiles. riot police firing back. protesters have occupied the square for months. demanding ukraine's pro-russia president step down. they marched on the parliament building. throwing stones and molotov cocktails. police responded with rubber bullets, stun grenades and beatings. the death toll keeps rising on both sides. hundreds more are injured. in the square, orthodox priests pray for peace. the white house is calling for calm. >> we continue to condemn street violence and excessive use of force by either side. >> reporter: but chaos reigns. it may now be a battle for its survival. kirit radia, abc news. >> venezuelan opposition leader lopez has come out of hiding and surrendered to police on what he calls false charges. lopez is accused of murder and terrorism for inciting anti-government riots last week that turned deadly. before turning himself in, lopez encouraged supporters to continue protesting peacefully. they are expected to rally outside of the court where lopez will appear later today. iran drew a line in the sand as talks over his nuclear program opened in vienna. they said dismantling iran's nuclear facilities will not happen. u.s. officials said it will. they will freeze for six months in exchange for relief from international sanctions. the new round of talks is aimed at hammering out a permanent deal. in tennessee, jail time for trio of peace activist opposed to nuclear weapons, a judge sentencing a roman catholic nun to nearly three years behind bars and her two accomplices to five years. in 2012 they breached several layers of security at a major nuclear facility in tennessee as a protest. that is before guards stopped them. they refused to apologize. investigators in pennsylvania say they have doubt about claims made by the confessed craigslist thrill killer. miranda barbour said she has killed more than 20 20 people in four states, luring many of her victims with ads on craigslist. but investigators say they have not been able to verify those claims. barbour and her husband have pleaded not guilty to charges they murdered a pennsylvania man in november. the florida man convicted of attempted murder in the so-called loud music trial insists he was the victim. even though he shot and killed a 17-year-old. newly-released jailhouse recordings, michael dunn compared himself to someone who was raped. here's abc's devin dwyer. >> reporter: days before going on trial for murder, dunn showed no remorse for the shots he fired into a car full of teenagers. >> i said, you're not going to kill me, you son of a [ bleep ], and i shot. >> reporter: newly released recordings to his fiancee. >> i'm the [ bleep ] victim here. i was the victim who was victimized. it is like they attacked me. i'm the victim. >> reporter: dunn, who was never physically attacked, said he felt threatened but shots he fired struck and killed an unarmed teenager jordan davis. a florida jury deadlocked on whether the death was murder or self defense but found dunn guilty of trying to kill davis's friend. >> i miss you terribly. >> yeah? >> yeah. i knew what i had. but you don't know what you got until it's gone. >> reporter: a flash of emotion from a man who will likely spend at least 60 years behind bars on the tapes dunn talks a lot about what life might be like there. >> so i was in a room with three black guys. >> oh, no. >> yeah. two kids and one was an old man. and they asked what i was in for. and i told them. and i gave them some of the details. and they were like, straight up, that's what they get. >> reporter: prosecutors disagree and say they plan to retry dunn for first-degree murder of jordan davis. dunn plans to appeal his conviction. if he loses under florida law, he could be in prison until he is at least 107 years old. john and marci. >> doven dwyer. devin dwyer. here is how it panned out with the jury, 10-2. ten people saying he was guilty, two people say he didn't. >> one of the jurors spoke to buy ron pitts saying the key moment in the deliberations is when dunn's attorney made it clear that dunn felt he was in danger. so that's what convinced at least those two jurors. >> the victim's parents in this case are speaking out later on "good morning america." stay tuned for the abc news exclusive. a dramatic new video out of new jersey, capturing a fearless gang of jewelry thieves pulling off a quarter of a million dollar heist. you can see them use a pickup truck to smash through the jewelry store. it is around 6:00 a.m. they attach a steel cable to a safe. a front-end loader scoops it up and dumps it into another car. >> it is depressing. with all of the hard work we had over the years put this together and in a couple minutes they can take it away from you. that's heartbreaking. >> that safe was packed with $250,000 worth of jewels. the whole operation took just two minutes. now to another bold smash--grab. but these two robbers weren't quite as ambitious. they crashed into a convenient store in houston in the middle of the night but only wanted one thing. a case of beer. you see there, the pair was in and out in a matter of seconds speeding off with 18 bud lights and leaving behind thousands of dollars in damage. >> that is just crazy. >> yes. >> if you're going to be a criminal, go big. >> they may have already had a few before they decided to do that. >> good point. a car port crashed on top of him. firefighters who came to his rescue say the weight of the roof was buckling on him with all that weight of the snow on top. the man was fine. debris fell from the arena ceiling that canceled a basketball game at indiana university. school officials say an eight-foot long piece of metal facing fell on to will damaged seats there give weigh from too much snow and ice on the roof. no one was injured. engineers say the metal facing was strictly ornamental and the roof is structurally sound. now to sochi where some high-profile americans will be in action today. first up, bode miller fresh off his bronze in the super-g event. back on the slopes today in another event. >> yep. giant slalom. >> women's bobsledding, united states going into today final heat in first place. another american sled currently in third, lolo jones and letter teammate are in 11th place. >> gracie gold is a hopeful as women's figure skating port collapsed. trapping a man under the rubble. rescue crews had to cut through the roof to bring him to safety. in new jersey, using metal detectors and google maps to bring down fire hydrants. 15 minutes to dig one out. so many cities and towns hitting breaking points. sheer a man using a blow torch to melt ice. >> this is the best way. it's 4 inches thick here. >> reporter: in jersey city, no salt for 18 days. so many roads here are still unplowed. kids were ice skating down the streets. now even more problems for people in some sports of jersey city. snow-covered cars like this one will reporter: here in new jersey, the transportation chief warning, if there's another storm, the state may have to shut down those interstates. there's just too much snow here. gio benitez, abc news, jersey city. >> now here is a look at today's weather a wintery mix of rain and snow for the northeast. much of the midwest will get plenty of rain. snow showers from idaho to dakotas. up to 3 inches of rain for the pacific northwest. up to 2 more feet of snow for the cascades. >> and the entire nation will see milder temperatures, 59 degrees for washington, 72 for atlanta. the hot spot again is phoenix at 82 degrees. now to the ukraine for a developing story. a deadly government crackdown overnight. fire still burning in kiev central square this morning where protesters are huddling after night of violence. thousands of riot police attacked their encampment, then protesters set a ring of fire. at least 25 people died. the government took a harder line after getting $2 billion financial life line from russia. teen education activists is doing everything possible to help save an entire generation of syrian children victimized by that civil war. malala yousafzai visited a refugee camp in jordan visiting children living in filth and deprived of education. she said her foundation plans to open schools and camps as soon as possible in 2012. the pakistani native was shot in the head after publicly dpee nounsing taliban rule. the federal investigators are recommending safety response to the commuter rail that killed people in december. they want inward and outward facing cameras to simultaneously monitor the conductor and tracks. it's also calling for speed limit signs at all locations where permanent speed restrictions are in place. the train was going 82 miles an hour when it derailed on a curve in a 30-mile-an-hour zone. yet another jetliner has run into turbulence so severe at least nine people have been injured. a cathay pacific flight from hong kong to japan. they said some passengers were jolted out of their seats and hit the ceiling. turbulence that lasted two minutes. one flight attendance is still hospitalized. abc's david kerley reports on the investigation. >> reporter: just as united airline 737 started its descent into billings, montana, a jolt. >> felt like something came up from the bottom and hit the bottom of the plane. >> then stuff and people were flying all over the place. >> reporter: it was severe turbulence and those not buckled in were tossed about. >> he flew up out of his seat and actually hit the ceiling of the -- ceiling of the aircraft, and came down and landed on a lady next to him. >> reporter: the plane seemed to fall for nearly five seconds, its right wing dipping. as this simulation shows, a mother started screaming when she lost control of her child. a baby ending up in the air, landing in another seat, luckily unhurt. it's impossible to hold a baby during severe turbulence or high g-force. crash simulations show how a child can be pulled from their parents' grasp. the reason, a 20-pound baby's weight can triple during severe event and our arms are just not strong enough. there is one approved restraint and of course you can use a car seat. if you fly, turbulence is a common occurrence, but it can happen without any warning and those who are normally injured are members of the crew. the last ten years on record show on average there are 32 injuries every year. and two-thirds of those are to crew members, often to flight attendants. >> right behind my right-hand shoulder is the stewardess. i seen her flying back and forth. >> reporter: one flight attendant is hospitalized in serious condition. one passenger and two others were treated and released after that flight through turbulent air. david kerley, abc news, washington. united airlines is apologizing for a nationwide computer glitch that added to weather-related flight cancellations and delays. the computers used to check-in passengers and check boarding passes shut down briefly which led to major ranting on twitter. united insists the problem has been resolved. america could have a new multimillionaire
