We like hump day. We like hump day, thats right. Get over it. Lets get started. We begin this half hour with even more fallout from the George Zimmerman verdict. Four jurors in the case are now distancing themselves from the comments made to cnn by juror b37. That juror had said both zimmerman and Trayvon Martin bore some responsibility for what happened that night. For more reaction to the verdict, heres abcs matt gutman. Reporter the aftershocks from the case still rippling out. Protests across the country because, for so many, it is personal. Including the nations attorney general. Talking about a conversation his father had with him years ago about being black and dealing with the police with caution. After Trayvon Martins shooting, he said he had to have the same talk with his son. Yes, for all the progress that weve seen, recent events demonstrate that we still have much more work to do and much further to go. Reporter and now were learning what was going on inside that jury room. A woman cnn identified as juror b37 saying race wasnt an issue. I think all of us thought race did not play a role. So nobody felt race played a role . I dont think so. None of the jurors . I cant speak for them. That wasnt part of the discussion in the jury room . No, we never had that discussion. Reporter they worked right up there on the third floor. At first, it was a split decision. After 16 hours of deliberations they decided they had to acquit George Zimmerman. Something that juror said was painful. I want people to know that we put everything into everything to get this verdict. We didnt just go in there and say, were going to come in here and just do guilty not guilty. We thought about it for hours and cried over it afterwards. Reporter her comments also sparking outrage when discussing her difficulty understanding rachel jeantel, one of the prosecutors star witnesses. I dont think its really racial. I think its just everyday life. The type of life that they live and how they are living. The environment that they are living in. Reporter as for martins mother who said shes heartbroken because of the verdict, again calling for calm. God is healing my heart this very moment. But as i watch so many people come together, it reminds me that we have a lot of work to do. Matt gutman, abc news, sanford, florida. You know, returning to what attorney general eric holder said, you know, in that when he was making that speech. What he essentially said was, the conversation that he had to have with his son that his father had with him was, if you are ever presented with a situation where you feel like someone is treating you unfairly or you run into someone in the street and you have to defend yourself in a way that clearly is racially motivated, this is what you need to do in that situation. He was i think what he was trying to say is how sad it is in this day and age because of the verdict he had to sit down with his son and have that conversation at all with his child. Weve made progress but still the same conversation my dad had with me x number of decades ago, i have still in 2013 still have to have, pointing out that weve come a long way. We have miles to go. And the other four jurors distancing themselves from that juror who spoke to Anderson Cooper. They released a statement. One line in that statement was serving on this jury has been a highly emotional and physically draining experience for each of us. The death of a teenager weighs heavily on our hearts, but in the end we did what the law required us to do. They tried to make it clear that the juror who spoke to cnn does not speak for all of them. And they asked for privacy. Once again asking for privacy. I think it will be awhile before we hear from the jurors. I dont doubt that well begin to hear from them and give us some insight of what it was like inside that jury room. May be a good move for them to wait until the countrys temperature cools down. Maybe a few months or six months or a year from now when things have subsided. A lot of folks are upset with them, too. You know what can happen. Absolutely. Moving on to the other news of the day. That was where a couple of guys were fishing for tuna and came across an endangered white whale tangled up in a fishing trap. It was struggling to swim. One of the fishermen decided to help. He grabbed a knife and a small camera and went for it. Back on dry land he says the whale actually seemed to help him come to the rescue. As he is passing and we kind of came facetoface and his eye comes into the frame, he slowed down, and it was kind of crazy. I know it sounds corny, but it seemed like he stopped for that reason. And, he says, he made one cut and that was enough to set the whale free. After that, the animal swam to the surface for a breath, waved his tail and swam off. Experts say this one went well, but they suggest you not try this on your next fishing trip. Sound advice. Coming up, the baseball fan who managed to snag 9,000 foul and home run balls. Four of the jurors are now distancing themselves from the comments made by juror b37 to Anderson Cooper. Incredible this continues. Protests continue. And, you know, the interesting thing about this, usually when theres an acquittal in a case like this, only one side really gets the brunt of the anger, of the people who are out there. But not only are George Zimmermans parents and George Zimmerman himself receiving Death Threats, but the Trayvon Martin family is as well. His parents have come out to say that they, too, would like for whatever protests are happening or whatever reaction were going to have to be as peaceful as possible because they are also getting Death Threats in this case. And attorney general holder did point this out. I thought it was interesting in his speech yesterday. He said some fear the anger of those who disagree with the jury might overshadow and obscure the issues at the heart of this case. But the people of sanford and for the most part thousands of others across america rejected this destructive path. People really feared the worst, like l. A. 92. There were some incidents, but nothing that bad. The protests were peaceful, for the most part. Theres been no shortage of reaction to the zimmerman verdict from celebrities. This morning on world news now sweltering heat blankets nearly half the nation. Millions are in the grip of a heat wave that is likely to last all week long. Also this morning, the news not unexpected, but still heartbreaking. Investigators say popular young actor Cory Monteith was killed by a mix of drugs and alcohol. Plus this and it was her idea to get married at the derby. Heck, yeah, weve got to do it. Then a smashing good time was had by all. The fenderbending nuptials on the freeway of love. Just today, though, unfortunately. Only got you one more day. Then back off to your wonderful life in daytime. On to the sunlight, yes. Lets have some fun while im still here. Its been fun. Lets get started. The big story is the weather. Much of the nation is heading into another day of dangerous heat. New york city right here is experiencing the highest above normal temperatures in any place in the country. Thats the truth. And in suburban, washington, d. C. , the misery is compounded by a lack of water. We begin with abcs sam champion. Reporter from maine to the great lakes and into the deep south, nearly onehalf of this country is feeling the blistering heat. Its a combination of high daytime temperatures, high nighttime temperatures and pulsepumping humidity that never gives your body the chance to feel cooler. Near washington, d. C. , where it felt like 100 degrees, nearly 150,000 residents told to stockpile water for as long as five days because the main water pipe that supplies the area will be shut down over fears it may fail. Buy bottled water to drink. Have about two gallons on hand in your house per person to get you through. Reporter a new use for the kids play pool. Im going to have to use it now to flush our toilets with. Reporter even if the temperature stays in the 90s, add the humidity and it can feel like its above 100 degrees. In philadelphia, despite temperatures flirting with 100degree mark, the plymouth fife and drum corps sweated it out for the tourists. I know theyre hot. Im hot in this. Reporter you have to think creatively to get cool. In new york, the hottest bar right now is the coolest bar. Inside the hilton hotel, a bar made of ice. 100 degrees outside. 23 degrees in here. Reporter and this heat wave is widespread and long lasting. Underneath the heat dome it goes from the east coast all the way west to kansas, texas, even into oklahoma. And most major cities will see the 90s until friday. Meaning much of this area will have a five or sixday heat wave. Sam champion, abc news, new york. No break for a few days. I have to try that ice bar, though. Thats in new york. That looks good to me. I dont know about wearing a big old jacket to enjoy a cocktail, though. Its hard to drink in the big jacket. Its on the jacket and then you are sitting on ice. Is it comfortable . Horrible shrinkage. Horrible. Talking about the bill, obviously. Exactly. Hey, girl. Well continue our coverage with a look at how long this brutal weather might last. Here is accuweathers andrew baglini. Good morning, diana and rob. Unfortunately this dangerous heat wave continues not only today but over the next couple of days. Relief not coming until the weekend. Temperaturewise getting well into the 90s. 96 degrees in washington, d. C. 94 in new york. The most dangerous aspect is when you factor in the humidity. Thats where temperatures will be feeling like theyre in the triple digits all across the region. The hottest areas around the Tennessee Valley and along the i95 corridor, including washington, d. C. , philadelphia and new york. Also the overnight lows not helping things. Temperatures dropping only into the lower 80s. Buildings, houses, not getting a chance to cool down. This will be dangerous through the rest of the week. Finally relief coming into the weekend on saturday with a cold front but that could be accompanied with some severe thunderstorms. Diana and rob, back to you. I think people will welcome that rain if it means things cool off. Usually things cool off after a nice rain. Bring on the rain. I think so. Listen, every summer if you watch even five minutes of news youll hear about some kind of heat wave and people who work outside. Got to be outside in the sun. Its 100 degrees. Its a heat wave. We do these stories all summer, all the time. The deal is you have to use common sense. Dont stand outside in the blazing heat if you have a condition. Drink a lot of water and check on everybody around you. Make sure they are doing okay. I feel bad for the folks that work outside. Postal workers. Guys in the food trucks, window washers, valets outside the hotel. That kind of stuff. I think the people who have it the worst are the construction workers because they have to wear all that stuff in order to stay safe on the workplace at the workplace. They are the ones i feel the worst for. Everybody that has to be outside in 100degree weather, yikes. Time for a sick day. Just one. In a heat wave, one. Why not . Moving on to other news. A ferocious wildfire that destroyed several homes is still blazing through Southern California this morning. The fire has scorched more than 9,000 acres and forced evacuations about 50 miles south of palm springs. Hundreds of firefighters are facing 100foot flames. All of it in dry, rugged terrain. Monteith was discovered in his Vancouver Hotel room over the weekend. He had been quite open about his struggles with addiction. Attorney general eric holder says it may be time to reevaluate floridas stand your ground law. Speaking about the acquittal of George Zimmerman, holder says such laws sow dangerous conflict. Holders speech then turned personal. He mentioned a talk he had with his son after the Trayvon Martin shooting. Yet for all the progress that weve seen, recent events demonstrate that we still have much more work to do. And much further to go. Four of the jurors in the zimmerman trial are now distancing themselves from the comments made by juror b37 in the interview with Anderson Cooper on cnn. And one provocative reaction to the zimmerman verdict has now gone viral. Former white house adviser van jones tweeted this picture after the not guilty verdict. As you can see it shows Martin Luther king jr. Wearing a hoodie that looks a lot like the one Trayvon Martin was wearing when he was killed. Jones also tweeted the declaration, quote, racism won. The senate reached a deal ending a bitter showdown over filibuster rules. Majority leader harry reid had threatened to change the required votes for a filibuster from 60 to 51. And that would have made it virtually impossible for the republican minority to block president obamas nominees. But democrats agreed to leave the old rules in place. In exchange, republicans are moving forward with several stalled nominations. And the daughter of former Vice President dick cheney says shell challenge wyomings senior senator in next years republican primary. Liz cheney is taking on popular incumbent mike enzi saying its time for a new generation of leaders in washington. Cheney wont have an easy time here. Enzi easily won reelection in 2008 with more than 75 of the vote. And rare kind of republican challenging a very entrenched republican incumbent. Very interesting. He was supposed to retire. You know, im going to stay in and run. Shes like im going for it. You get the sense maybe she already had her running boots on when he said he was going to stay in. She knew she wanted to run. She said im running anyway. Game on. Yes. As for last nights baseball game, the allstar game, it got off to a painful start courtesy of a couple of hometown players. Here we go. In the top of the first, Robinson Cano was hit by matt harvey. He left the game and says he now has a bruise. The American League broke a scoreless tie in the fourth. They tacked on another run. A. L. Pitchers were mowing down National League hitters. The n. L. Could only muster three hits. And that was that. The American League wins 30. That means the a. L. Representative will have Home Field Advantage come world series time. We were talking of people who have to work outside. They were working outside. 89 degrees when the game started. I cant imagine having to run around in that heat. Those guys, they make enough money. They can they can have air conditioned shirts and fanned hats. Theyll be fine. Thats true. Its a good one. And it is hump day. One line in that statement was serving on this jury has been a draining experience for each of us. A longer life than most. Absolutely. An amazing one. Now to a truly amazing story. It happened late last week off the coast of virginia beach. Stand your ground law essentially what zimmerman claimed to be doing when he allegedly shot and killed Trayvon Martin. This is a quote from stevie. Did you pray for ron goldman, nicole brown and their families, too . Look, its kind of hard to argue with some of that logic a little bit considering her dad became really well known and infamous in some circles for helping o. J. Get acquitted back in the mid 90s. Absolutely. That was probably the last high, high profile case that was this racially charged, probably since, you know in our generation that i can remember. Rodney king, o. J. And Trayvon Martin. Those have been the three big ones. Kim has not responded yet. Well see if she does. But the zimmerman fallout continues. Just go back to being a mama and okay. All right. Happy news now. Happy news.
