The president says he knows he faces an uphill fight, trying to get congress to go along with an assault weapons ban. In the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, mr. Obama said he will consider using executive powers to bring about change. If theres a step we can take to save even one child from what happened in newtown, we should take that step. The president is reviewing proposals from Vice President biden who was asked to head up a task force to stop gun violence. More details are expected later this week. New york state is not waiting for federal action to crack down on guns. Governor andrew cuomo and state lawmakers reached a deal on the countrys first new gun control measure following the newtown shooting. The senate voted late last night and today the assembly is expected to approve some of the most restrictive gun laws in america, including tougher background checks and expanded assault weapons ban. Former president george h. W. Bush wakes up at home today for the first time in almost two months. He was released from a hospital in houston yesterday. He was admitted back on november 23rd for treatment of bronchitis and a bad cough. Mr. Bush, who is 88 years old, released a statement saying hes deeply grateful for the care he received and all the getwell wishes. As the flu continues to spread across the country, hospitals are cracking down on workers who simply refused to get a flu shot. Patients are allowed to turn down the vaccine, but many doctors and nurses are not being given that option. But the trend is clear in terms of public sentiment and whether it impacts capitol hill, who knows. But the numbers are the numbers. Also this half hour, millions of People Living with some of the worst pollution on the planet, a city where its dangerous simply to breathe the air. Imagine, and i think youll hear this in the piece, theyre comparing breathing the air in beijing to smoking. Thats how bad it is. And the pictures tell it. Look at that. And then well take you to the front lines of the fight against the flu. 48 hours inside hospitals that are flooded day and night with new cases. Here are the numbers. 71 support a new federal database that tracks gun sales. Meanwhile, 58 favor a ban on assault weapons, while 55 agree with the nra plan to put armed guards in schools. He wasnt really willing to go into details about what hes considering on gun control. But he took a lot of questions on that very explosive issue. After the tragic shooting at sandy hook elementary, president obama said the nation needed to change. And now hes poised to announce his own game plan on gun control. If there is a step we can take that will save even one child from what happened in newtown, we should take that step. Reporter president obama received recommendations from Vice President biden. They include stronger background checks for all gun purchases. A ban on high capacity magazine clips and renewed ban on assault weapons. My starting point is not to worry about the politics. My starting point is to focus on what makes sense, what works. Reporter he may have the publics support, but president obama is facing a tough fight on capitol hill. Nearly 300 members of congress have an a rating from the nra. For their opposition to all gun control measures. And gun rights advocates are out in full force, saying this is a battle theyre going to win. We dont think that theres much likelihood that the congress is going to move on making gun control laws worse than they are. Reporter with just the threat of stricter laws, gun sales have soared as americans rushed to stock up. President obama chalked that up to success by the gun industry as ginning up irrational fear. It obviously is good for business. Reporter president obama said responsible gun owners have nothing to worry about. But no surprise, the nra disagrees and say that none of the proposals the white house is even considering will make a difference. Rob and sunny, back to you. Lots of questions. What will congress do or not do . What executive powers will the president choose to exercise. You may not see much action on the federal level, but the states are moving on this issue. New york, maryland is beginning to act, as well. So what you dont see federally, you may see state by state in some parts of the country. One of the numbers from our study that was interesting to me is that 55 agree with the nra plan to put armed guards in schools. Im just not so sure that parents are that comfortable, at least parents ive spoken to, are that comfortable with armed guard there is their schools. I dont think anyone wants to feel like theyre sending their kids to a prison like setting. But on the other hand, they want to feel safe. If something does happen, there is someone there to take care of it. If all the polls now, at least for right now, are suggesting americans support these steps, but congress does nothing, it always fascinates me, because it suggests a fundamental gap in representative democracy. If the country feels this way, capitol hill has to get something done. Theres a fundamental problem if they dont take any action when public sentiment is so strongly on the side of all this. Agreed, agreed. Well see what happens, whether theres the political will. But the public seems to be taking issues, thats for sure. Moving on to some other news, a suburban new york home that was listed on a published map of pistol permit owners has been burglarized. But police say theres no direct evidence that the map is what led to the crime. The local newspaper posted an online map identifying handgun permit holders and their addresses. That triggered a big debate over whether such information was dangerous or not. The newspaper and some staffers have actually received threats. Isnt it remarkable . I live in westchester county, not too far from judge janeane piro, shes a gun owner, friend of mine. She talks all the time about being a gun owner and her home is on that map and she is livid. This is such a big issue. But it is a public list, though. Thats what the newspaper says. It is Public Information and they have a right to publish it. But what good comes out of it is the gray area. The fight over the National Debt is heating up. The treasury secretary is warning lawmakers that the government will exhaust its Borrowing Limit as soon as mid february. Thats earlier than expected. President obama warned that Social Security checks and Veterans Benefits could be delayed if his opponents do not vote to increase the federal debt limit. At least one of president obamas original cabinet members is staying for a second term. Education secretary arne duncan says he has no plans to leave. The former head of the Chicago Public school system, duncan has received generally good marks over the past four years. Reporter then she signed up for a couch to 5k program and learned to run and realized she wanted to learn to swim. But she had never done that before. I couldnt put my face in the water the first class. It was very painful. Just a year later, she runs, bikes and swims. Amy has completed two triathlons and two half marathons. Eventually she wants to do an iron man. Theres a group of us out there that have had weight loss surgery who are athletes now. I can say it. I was never comfortable saying that. Reporter but her coach has called her an athlete for a long time. Ive never worked with anybody quite like amy. She started her journey by losing weight on her own with no guidance and not really knowing what to do other than the fact that she thought she was going to die and she needed to do something. So we will all learn a lot more. Oprah tweeted something, that he came ready. So should be interesting. Also this half hour, turning their pain into a force for good. Parents in newtown join together in an antiviolence movement to try to spare other families their shattering grief. Yesterday was the onemonth anniversary of that massacre. Sometimes it feels like seconds and other times it feels like years. And then its four years since a miracle on the anniversary of that incredible landing on the hudson. How the story of flight 1549 continues to live on. We all remember that news day. I cant believe its been four years. I remember that. Were getting old fast. Then no secret, why this is our favorite story of the day. Our friend, Robin Roberts, just about ready to return to all her viewers and her family right here at abc. Earlier, standing amidst a tearfilled room of 100 livestrong staff members, sources tell abc news armstrong took responsibility for the damage his actions have caused the live strong foundation. The Cancer Charity he founded and which helped turn him from athlete to global icon. Its not just about the drug, but the defiance. His categorical insistence that he never cheated, now coming back to haunt him. I have never doped. Reporter you could see it in his unflinching glare for more than a decade on tv, to fans, sponsors, and cancer survivors. The cynics and the skeptics, im sorry for you. Postal service to sponsor armstrongs Tour De France winning team. They also say that armstrong is talking with authorities about cooperating and naming names. Quite a turn. And we get to see the lies. Not so difficult to prove. He was on larry king denying it, and for prosecutors, the issue is going to be he was so defiant over such a long period of time, in addition to perjuring himself in front of Law Enforcement folks. I dont see the comeback that hes probably hoping for. The reason he would rat on other people or other officials is that perhaps will lessen his lifetime ban from cycling. Case in point. Six weeks after the murdersuicide involving kansas city chief linebacker belcher, theres new information about how much alcohol was in his system. His bloodalcohol was twice the legal limit when he shot his girlfriend, the mother of his baby girl, nine times. Then he killed himself in front of his coach. The autopsy raises new questions whether police should have done more when they found him sleeping in his car. But they let belcher go. But in the wake of the sandy hook massacre, mr. Obama says he will consider using his executive powers to bring about change. A month after the newtown shootings, parents of the 20 children killed have joined together as a force for change. Theyve launched an antiviolence initiative called sandy hook promises. Its a way to honor their sons and daughters and help make sure no other parents ever suffer the same loss. Jeremy richmond lost his 6yearold daughter, avielle rose. Like everyone here, we want to bring about changes that will stop a tragedy such as this from happening in any community ever again. Because this can happen in any community. The sandy hook parents say they are ready to confront issues, including guns, Mental Health and school safety. Interesting note here, in stratford, connecticut, next to newtown, a school may be renamed for one of the teachers killed in the tragedy, victoria soto. She was 27 years old. Shes the one that died while shielding her kids. They may name a street after her, as well. She grew up there in stratford, connecticut. So many human faces to this thing. You think if any group has any sway over where the debate goes, those parent, their voices should be heard. Perhaps more loudly than anybody else. You still see the grief on their faces. I guess you never get over Something Like that. But it seems so fresh on their faces. Just a month. The house is expected to vote today on the second part of a bill that would deliver muchdelayed aid to survivors of super storm sandy, as lawmakers square off over the 50 billion package, some residents in jersey affected by sandy are scrambling to find a new place to live. They just found out their trailer park will not reopen. They have just one month to remove or demolish their homes. Oprah tweeted, just wrapped with Lance Armstrong. More than 2 1 2 hours. He came ready. One source even said the interview was emotional at times. For years, armstrong was insistent he never used drugs. I have never doped. Reporter even under oath. I cant be clearer that ive never taken drugs. Reporter but he appeared to go on an apology tour. Sources tell abc news, armstrong stood before live strong staff members, the charity he founded, and took responsibility for the damage his actions have caused the foundation. I think he believes very earnestly that hes got to move forward and hes at a place where hes nowhere left to move other than make this apology. Reporter and remember his teammates who broke their silence, sparking the downfall of the former champion. I think the team had become paranoid the police was watching the hotel room. Reporter sources say armstrong is also attempting to apologize to former friends. Its stunning that hes doing this. The president says he knows he faces an uphill fight, trying to get congress to go along with an assault weapons ban. In the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, mr. Obama said he will consider using executive powers to bring about change. If theres a step we can take to save even one child from what happened in newtown, we should take that step. The president is reviewing proposals from Vice President biden who was asked to head up a task force to stop gun violence. More details are expected later this week. New york state is not waiting for federal action to crack down on guns. Governor andrew cuomo and state lawmakers reached a deal on the countrys first new gun control measure following the newtown shooting. The senate voted late last night and today the assembly is expected to approve some of the most restrictive gun laws in america, including tougher background checks and expanded assault weapons ban. Former president george h. W. Bush wakes up at home today for the first time in almost two months. He was released from a hospital in houston yesterday. He was admitted back on november 23rd for treatment of bronchitis and a bad cough. Mr. Bush, who is 88 years old, released a statement saying hes deeply grateful for the care he received and all the getwell wishes. As the flu continues to spread across the country, hospitals are cracking down on workers who simply refused to get a flu shot. Patients are allowed to turn down the vaccine, but many doctors and nurses are not being given that option. At least 15 nurses and other hospital staff have been fired over the past two months for not getting the shot.
