>> yeah, it's incomprehensible that could happen. i have had two small kids i could barely get my kids out of the hospital i was the mother. having a person that was not the parent, escape with this kid and take, kidnap this child. >> good to know they have the tag system that sets off an alarm. >> the tag had been removed. >> some precautions in place. >> the baby is okay. this half-hour, terrifying scene in the subway station. this woman carrying her 4-year-old son, falls right on the tracks. how did it happen? who helped her immediately and how close she was to being in harm's way? those subways, the subway trains come every 60 seconds in some stations. >> she thought the train on the opposite side of the track was hers. that seems odd as well. there are some questions here. luckily they are okay. the video is hard to look at. later, lighten the mood a little bit to talk about the high-profile feud involving madonna and elton john. two divas, her words of apology on stage. may not have been so sincere. the battle of egos. in"the skinny." the battle continues. >> explain that for me. can you do that for me? we'll begin with the storm watch, isaac toying with tampa as millions brace for the absolute worst. >> the caribbean is getting battered this morning as tropical storm isaac head to hispaniola, the path has shifted further west. tampa and republican convention are still not in the clear. with more now here is abc's matt gutman. >> reporter: isaac is charging through the caribbean, 600 miles across with winds whipping up to 50 miles an hour. isaac flooding parts of puerto rico and neighboring islands with heavy rain bands spinning out 300 miles from the center. 200 people evacuated from guantanamo bay, cuba, where troops are sandbagging buildings. in miami they're feverishly buying provisions. >> every family should be prepared to sustain themselves up to 72 hours. >> reporter: in tampa, all eyes and headlines on the storm. it happens that tampa is the most flood-prone city in the entire country. >> even a category 1 can push up to eight feet of water. >> if you have the right storm at the right angle moving at the right speed, obviously, it has the ability to funnel a lot of the water up into the bay. >> reporter: as many as 800,000 people live in the evacuation zone here and would have to live if a category one storm threatened the area. travel delays are expected. airlines allowing passengers to change tickets without penalty. they're not the only ones changing itineraries. abc news learned that a number of security officials from other parts of the state have canceled their plans to help at the convention to help their own communities get ready. they don't need a hurricane to cause serious disruptions. even a tropical storm could cause an eight-foot storm surge here. that would submerge the bridge and road behind me causing may your disruptions for the convention. matt gutman, abc news, tampa. isaac could strengthen into a hurricane. but the question is when? >> meteorologist jim dickey has the latest from accu-weather. good morning. tropical storm isaac continues to slowly strengthen as we head through the day today, drifting west-northwestward. bringing strong wind to hispaniola. big time flooding there. now going forward here, drift its way further northward and westward. end up in the gulf of mexico. water is warm. expect it to impact the gulf coast going forward. rob, paula. back to you. >> thank you, jim. this is such a tense time of year along the gulf coast. today is the 20th anniversary of hurricane andrew making landfall in florida. the first hurricane of the '92 season. at the time was the costliest u.s. hurricane ever. next week, the 29th, marks the seventh anniversary of hurricane katrina which decimated new orleans and mississippi. so this time of the year is rough in that part of the country. >> basically a lot of uncertainty. hope it does weaken when it goes over haiti and dominican republic. that's the best case scenario. here is the rest of your friday forecast. isolated showers along the east coast. thunderstorms around minneapolis, omaha and kansas city. stormy from oklahoma city to dallas, shreveport, monsoons in the desert southwest. how is your tie there? >> good. my collar. shy of 100 in phoenix. 90 down in dallas. mostly 80s from the rockies into the nation's midsection and east coast. those monsoon storms in the southwest already have parts of arizona under water. emergency crews had to rescue two people stranded in a medical transport van. the driver was taking a disabled malg -- man to dialysis when they were swept off the road. they were both pulled to safety without serious injuries. a wildfire tearing through northern california has now destroyed more than 80 homes and it is still threatening nearly 1,000 others. the fire is 60% contained after scorching 44 square miles. 2,500 firefighters on the ground but they don't expect it to be fully under control until next week. they're making progress. yesterday, 50% contained and today, 60%. surprising new details about colorado movie theater shooting suspect james holmes emerged during a court hearing yesterday. it turns out that just six weeks before his rampage, holmes was banned from his college for making threats after he failed a neuroscience doctoral exam. while the university spokesperson disputed holmes was banned from the campus but did confirm a criminal background check was done on him. a three-day-old boy kidnapped from a pittsburgh hospital has been found unharmed and is now safely back with his family. a woman wearing scrubs and posing as a nurse told the baby's mom he needed a final test before being released from the hospital. that's when the woman and the newborn vanished. the baby was later found, and the woman who was arrested had some very bizarre things to say. >> i hurt one person's feelings that i love by a lie, i know that. >> who did you hurt? >> can't tell you that. >> a boyfriend or something? >> yeah. >> guess what, mom, it is all your fault. >> did you know these people? >> dad, you, too. >> oh. >> that's very bizarre. she said i keep telling you it wasn't just me. so maybe she didn't act alone. very bizarre. hospital administrators say they don't believe the suspect is an employee. doctors examined the baby. he is in good health. people wonder how can this happen. your baby in icu or delivered your baby, they actually put something on the leg of the child. >> bracelet. >> not necessarily. sometimes a bracelet but sometimes it just goes around the ankle. if they even leave, the alarms go off. but the alarm had been taken off at 12:34 in front of the mother. then there was a 45-minute window the baby didn't have the tag on, and the woman disappeared. at 1:15, we are ready to leave with our baby. couldn't find the baby. >> you can tell from the sound bite in the piece, we are talking it someone very disturbed here. hopefully she gets the help she need. the baby is safe. moving on this morning, a woman is safe after a terrifying high speed drive across missouri. the accelerator on her suv got stuck while she was driving on the interstate. subcommittee she called her husband and 911 as she sped along at speeds up to 110 miles an hour. finally managed to pull over. a cop ran to the car to get her out and put that car in park. talk about some scary moments. ooh, lucky lady. the victim of a rare flesh eating disease is home again. 24-year-old amy copeland lost both hands, her left leg, and right foot to the life threatening infection. spent more than three months in hospitals before returning to her parents' home which donations have made wheelchair accessible. her father says her spirits are good. what an amazing recovery. lucky, lucky lady, again. >> great story. and here's a fish tale about the one that didn't get away. get it? caught on video. janet woo reports. >> reporter: a woman carrying her 4-year-old son through the turn-style, looks back trying to retrieve her charlie card, and hoists a bag on her shoulder and proceeds through a moderately crowded platform. without stopping she drops on to the empty redline tracks. >> oh, my god. she just fell, right? >> oh my gosh. >> oh, my goodness. >> reporter: reaction was universal. watch what happens after the woman falls. within second several people have jumped on to the tracks and work together to pull the woman and child back to the platform. within 20 second they're off the tracks, personnel are at the scene and good samaritans scrambled out of harm's way. >> would you have done the same? >> absolutely. >> amazingly no one sustained any visible injuries. both the woman and her son were taken to mgh for evaluation. she later told t officials she saw the northbound train on the other side of the track and thought she could board from the southbound platform. surprisingly, few speculated about what motivated the incident. it didn't matter to most. >> i wouldn't make the judgment. i would jump in, help the mom out right away. no question. >> human reaction to help save a child. >> it doesn't surprise me. because i think that we're getting to a place where we're not bystanders anymore, we are actually getting in there and helping each other. >> reporter: t officials applauded the action of witnesses but said it is best to get t personnel first since the third rail is electrified. >> wow. we are so distracted as human beings, especially as mothers these days. i am not going to judge that woman in the least. there was no barricade. in new york there is a barricade in between the train so could clearly tell one is going northbound. one is the raid on osama bin laden and his death. and as abc's martha raddatz reports, the secrets in this book are raising question as but national security. >> reporter: he was there when the navy s.e.a.l.s. busted down the doorst bin laden compound. he was there when osama bin laden was shot to death. the former navy s.e.a.l. who uses the pseudonym mark owen has written a tell-all to beat all tell-alls. and "no easy day the firsthand account of the mission that killed osama bin laden" has been a closely held secret by the publisher but expected to be an instant pest seller when it is released on september 11th. no one knows exactly what is in it yet, but the publisher says the book provides a blow-by-blow narrative of the assault beginning with the helicopter crash that could have ended jones' -- owens' life, straight through to the radio call confirming bin laden's death. the administration and military were quick to say the author did not request approval for the book which is usually standard even though the s.e.a.l. left the military a year ago. the s.e.a.l. community hasn't shied away completely from publicity in recent months. some active duty s.e.a.l.s. playing themselves in a fictionalized movie which has some very real-looking raids. talking about the osama bin laden raid is different. already the author's name has been made public by some news wasn't the case yesterday after he was abducted right from the hospital. >> just three days old. a frightening scenario for any parent. thankfully this situation had a happy ending. details from abc's sharyn alfonsi. >> reporter: she walked into this pittsburgh hospital in broad daylight and walked out with this three-day-old baby, bryce coleman. just as his parents were preparing to take him home. the woman wearing black medical scrubs like this. police believe she bought the scrubs at a nearby store. the woman is being questioned. and bryce has been found alive. according to the national center for missing and exploited children, since 1983, 131 babies have been taken from hospitals. most of them found. only five are still missing. and most of the times the babies aren't taken from the nursery but from the mother's room. that's what happened earlier this month in southern california. watch as this woman, also dressed in hospital scrubs, posing as a nurse, walks into a room to tell a new mother to take a shower before a doctor examined her. >> the victim turned her back, went to take a shower. and the suspect placed the baby inside of the tote bag and tried to leave the emergency room floor. >> reporter: she walked into a high tech security web. the baby was wearing a tiny id bracelet that works like a homing device. triggers alarms near a door or elevator. baby bryce had on a similar bracelet, but it was removed by a nurse while his mother watched because he was about to go home. sharon alfonsi, abc news, new york. this woman that abducted the baby, probably had some mental issues. she said, "mom, guess what -- it is all your fault and dad, too. i keep telling you it wasn't just me." some of the things she was relaying put in handcuffs weren't making sense. she didn't seem very lucid. >> kind of frightening to watch her address reporters and the way she did it. luckily again, the good side is that the baby made it out, and safe back in the right bullet. isaac will still likely make landfall somewhere along the gulf coast. the french west indies felt the power of isaac's wind and rain but the tropical storm is expected to intensify, taking aim at the dominican republic and haiti. boat owners in u.s. virgin islands are also battening down the hatches. >> i took a hotel room here to keep an eye on her during the storm. worst case scenario, that's my blue danielle. >> reporter: though the storm is tracking west, forecasters expect isaac to grow into a hurricane and pose a possible threat to tampa florida during next week's republican national convention. the city's mayor says he will cancel the convention if he has to. governor rick scott says people need to heed any warnings. >> we are going to watch this closely. clearly tampa is ready for the convention. it is beautiful right now. open for business. >> reporter: u.s. military personnel in cuba are also not taking any chances. pretrial hearings at guantanamo bay for five prisoners accused of launching the 9/11 attacks were postponed as authorities evacuate 200 people on the island. >> my concern is preventing any loss of life. so, the bay, and the -- all of the water, around -- there is, storm surge and all that thing. so really it is a consistent plan that we have. >> reporter: isaac expected to grow into a hurricane over 48 hours. cuba should feel effects force. flooding rainfall. 48 inches of rain. will lead to big-time flooding there. going forward will drift its way westward. end up in the gulf of mexico. water is warm. expecting the storm to strengthen to hurricane force and impact the gulf coast going forward. rob, paula, back to you. >> strengthen. instead of weaken. >> and a two as it heads toward the gulf coast. one can do incredible damage. category 1. plus tampa, most vulnerable city to flooding in the entire country. really, when they say take precautions, really those officials mean it for variety of reasons and beyond the convention. >> it will hit hispaniola, haiti, dominican republic, interesting, the prime minister in haiti is asking residents there to tape their windows to prepare for this. asking residents to wire money overseas. so they can have food and water. >> let's be honest here, florida, used to dealing with this unfortunately, the convention, convention will take place. it will all happen. don't forget the storm is going to pound haiti as well. after the 2010 earthquake. that monster earthquake there. 400,000 people in haiti still remain in settlement camps. don't have homes. >> in tents. >> in tents in that country. so, you know trust me, there are problems, then there are problems. haiti has severe problems. >> another problem, in the d.r., being asked to evacuate. but a lot of folks don't arrangements for the republican convention in tampa. half of the officers assigned to convention duty are coming from other parts of the state. if the tropical storm worsens, many of those officers if that's what we had to do. >> fbi and police in tampa insist the convention security team is prepared and will have plenty of officers in place regardless for the storm or unexpected event. they're last night meeting privately with the families of sikh worshippers killed or injured in a shooting rampage outside milwaukee. a gunman with a ties to a white supremacist group walked into the wisconsin sikh temple and opened fire before turning the gun on himself. mrs. obama offered condolences and listened to personal stories about the victims. police in washington say they're actively investigating a threat against congressman todd akin, the missouri republican under fire since sunday when he said that women's bodies have ways of preventing pregnancies in cases of, quote, legitimate rape. his spokesman claims several threats have been made against him, his family and his staff, via phone calls, e-mails and tweets. now lance armstrong, a stunning development. he said last night that he will not contest charges that he used illegal drugs during his iconic cycling career. those charges were brought by the anti-doping agency, and giving up his fight to clear his name, armstrong called the agency effort against him, an unconstitutional witch-hunt. by not entering an arbitration process, armstrong could be stripped of his seven tour de france titles and banned from cycling and most organized sports for life. the reason he said he wasn't going to contest this is because he said he felt like it was going to be one sided and he wouldn't have a fair shot to begin with. >> in his statement he said this investigation has not been about learning the truth or cleaning up cycling but punishing me at all costs. he simply said enough is enough. uh-huh. he says the uci and cycling associations have made it clear, the organization lacks the jurisdiction to even bring these charges. and they ordered them to stop and they haven't. >> the final word, mentioned the cycling organization. >> the uci, here is the thing. they can say they are going to ban him. ultimately that's up to the jurisdiction of the uci, which is cycling's governing board. if -- it gets a little convoluted. they're saying they can strip him. he is saying you don't have final authority. >> what a big risk. get stripped. get banned. wow. >> yeah. exactly. you look at his history, all >> yeah, it's incomprehensible that could happen. i have had two small kids i could barely get my kids out of the hospital i was the mother. having a person that was not the parent, escape with this kid and take, kidnap this child. >> good to know they have the tag system that sets off an alarm. >> the tag had been removed. >> some precautions in place. >> the baby is okay. this half-hour, terrifying scene in the subway station. this woman carrying her 4-year-old son, falls right on the tracks. how did it happen? we'll begin with the storm watch, isaac toying with tampa as millions brace for the absolute worst. >> the caribbean is getting battered this morning as tropical storm isaac head to hispaniola, the path has shifted further west. tampa and republican convention are still not in the clear. with more now here is abc's matt gutman. >> reporter: isaac is charging through the caribbean, 600 miles across with winds whipping up to 50 miles an hour. isaac flooding parts of puerto rico and neighboring islands with heavy rain bands spinning out 300 miles from the center. 200 people evacuated from guantanamo bay, cuba, where troops are sandbagging buildings. in miami they're feverishly buying provisions. >> every family should be prepared to sustain themselves up to 72 hours. >> reporter: in tampa, all eyes and headlines on the storm. it happens that tampa is the most flood-prone city in the entire country. >> even a category 1 can push up to eight feet of water. >> if you have the right storm at the right angle moving at the right speed, obviously, it has the ability to funnel a lot of the water up into the bay. >> reporter: as many as 800,000 people live in the evacuation zone here and would have to live if a category one storm threatened the area. travel delays are expected. airlines allowing passengers to change tickets without penalty. they're not the only ones changing itineraries. abc news learned that a number of security officials from other parts of the state have canceled their plans to help at the convention to help their own communities get ready. they don't need a hurricane to cause serious disruptions. even a tropical storm could cause an eight-foot storm surge here. that would submerge the bridge and road behind me causing may your disruptions for the convention. matt gutman, abc news, tampa. isaac could strengthen into a hurricane. but the question is when? >> meteorologist jim dickey has the latest from accu-weather. good morning. tropical storm isaac continues to slowly strengthen as we head through the day today, drifting west-northwestward. bringing strong wind to hispaniola. big time flooding there. now going forward here, drift its way further northward and westward. end up in the gulf of mexico. water is warm. expect it to impact the gulf coast going forward. rob, paula. back to you. >> thank you, jim. this is such a tense time of year along the gulf coast. today is the 20th anniversary of hurricane andrew making landfall in florida. the first hurricane of the '92 season. at the time was the costliest u.s. hurricane ever. next week, the 29th, marks the seventh anniversary of hurricane katrina which decimated new orleans and mississippi. so this time of the year is rough in that part of the country. >> basically a lot of uncertainty. hope it does weaken when it goes over haiti and dominican republic. that's the best case scenario. here is the rest of your friday forecast. isolated showers along the east coast. thunderstorms around minneapolis, omaha and kansas city. stormy from oklahoma city to dallas, shreveport, monsoons in the desert southwest. how is your tie there? >> good. my collar. shy of 100 in phoenix. 90 down in dallas. mostly 80s from the rockies into the nation's midsection and east coast. those monsoon storms in the southwest already have parts of arizona under water. emergency crews had to rescue two people stranded in a medical transport van. the driver was taking a disabled man to dialysis when they were swept off the road. they were both pulled to safety without serious injuries. a wildfire tearing through northern california has now destroyed more than 80 homes and it is still threatening nearly 1,000 others. the fire is 60% contained after scorching 44 square miles. 2,500 firefighters on the ground but they don't expect it to be fully under control until next week. they're making progress. yesterday, 50% contained and today, 60%. surprising new details about colorado movie theater shooting suspect james holmes emerged during a court hearing yesterday. it turns out that just six weeks before his rampage, holmes was banned from his college for making threats after he failed a neuroscience doctoral exam. while the university spokesperson disputed holmes was banned from the campus but did confirm a criminal background check was done on him. a three-day-old boy kidnapped from a pittsburgh hospital has been found unharmed and is now safely back with his family. a woman wearing scrubs and posing as a nurse told the baby's mom he needed a final test before being released from the hospital. that's when the woman and the newborn vanished. the baby was later found, and the woman who was arrested had some very bizarre things to say. >> i hurt one person's feelings that i love by a lie, i know that. >> who did you hurt? >> can't tell you that. >> a boyfriend or something? >> yeah. >> guess what, mom, it is all your fault. >> did you know these people? >> dad, you, too. >> oh. >> that's very bizarre. she said i keep telling you it wasn't just me. so maybe she didn't act alone. very bizarre. hospital administrators say they don't believe the suspect is an employee. doctors examined the baby. he is in good health. people wonder how can this happen. your baby in icu or delivered your baby, they actually put something on the leg of the child. >> bracelet. >> not necessarily. sometimes a bracelet but sometimes it just goes around the ankle. if they even leave, the alarms go off. but the alarm had been taken off at 12:34 in front of the mother. then there was a 45-minute window the baby didn't have the tag on, and the woman disappeared. at 1:15, we are ready to leave with our baby. couldn't find the baby. >> you can tell from the sound bite in the piece, we are talking it someone very disturbed here. hopefully she gets the help she need. the baby is safe. moving on this morning, a woman is safe after a terrifying high speed drive across missouri. the accelerator on her suv got stuck while she was driving on the interstate. she called her husband and 911 as she sped along at speeds up to 110 miles an hour. finally managed to pull over. a cop ran to the car to get her out and put that car in park. talk about some scary moments. ooh, lucky lady. the victim of a rare flesh eating disease is home again. 24-year-old amy copeland lost both hands, her left leg, and right foot to the life threatening infection. spent more than three months in hospitals before returning to her parents' home which donations have made wheelchair accessible. her father says her spirits are good. what an amazing recovery. lucky, lucky lady, again. >> great story. and here's a fish tale about the one that didn't get away. get it? >> oh my gosh. >> oh, my goodness. >> reporter: reaction was universal. watch what happens after the woman falls. within second several people have jumped on to the tracks and work together to pull the woman and child back to the platform. within 20 second they're off the tracks, personnel are at the scene and good samaritans scrambled out of harm's way. >> would you have done the same? >> absolutely. >> amazingly no one sustained any visible injuries. both the woman and her son were taken to mgh for evaluation. she later told t officials she saw the northbound train on the other side of the track and thought she could board from the southbound platform. surprisingly, few speculated about what motivated the incident. it didn't matter to most. >> i wouldn't make the judgment. i would jump in, help the mom out right away. no question. >> human reaction to help save a child. >> it doesn't surprise me. because i think that we're getting to a place where we're not bystanders anymore, we are actually getting in there and helping each other. >> reporter: t officials applauded the action of witnesses but said it is best to get t personnel first since the third rail is electrified. >> wow. we are so distracted as human beings, especially as mothers these days. i am not going to judge that woman in the least. there was no barricade. in new york there is a barricade in between the train so could clearly tell one is going northbound. one is going southbound. >> there doesn't appear to be a median or whatever there. again, kudos to the good samaritans in the case. stepped in. 20 seconds later she was off the tracks. >> that little boy is okay. she seemed a little embarrassed. >> wow, man. her fall almost as bad as the red sox. oh. >> you had to go there?
