Theyre doing everything they can to escape. You see them trying to get out. Right there and then as they keep on going they know they are getting out just in the nick of time because that plane continued to go under and it just sank. You will not believe this when you see it. The man filming every single second was wearing one of these, a gopro camera. Its all rage right now. Its become so popular. Well show you the entire unbelievable footage unedited from beginning to end. It really is incredible. Right to that dangerous Chemical Spill in west virginia. Right now so many people scrambling for water after residents were warned away from using tap water for anything. It could be toxic. Linsey davis has the latest. Reporter good morning, george. This spill caused a mandatory shutdown for schools and restaurants. And after an overnight rush to of residents lined up to buy bottled waters, many places have already run out. This morning more than 300,000 West Virginians are scrambling for water after a toxic Chemical Spill contaminated the main water supply in nine counties across charleston shutting down schools, businesses and the local government. I didnt know it was going to be this scary. Reporter many Stores Running dry just hours after west virginias governor declared a state of emergency. Do not drink it. Do not cook with it. Do not wash clothes in it. Do not take a bath in it. Reporter the governor enlisting the National Guard and fema to bring in water and supplies. The chemical reportedly leaked from a 48,000gallon tank before overrunning a containment area. And infiltrating the river. With two to three gallons of the toxins. Officials say its a skin and lung irritant that has the area wreaking of a licorice type smell. Weve had complaints about eyes burning. Things of that nature. Reporter they insist its not deadly. Cleanup crews works around the clock on the river as officials try to determine the extent of the damage but it could be weeks before the water supply is safe. Abc news reached out to the chemical plant, freedom industries, overnight but have not heard back. This spill happened just upstream from what were told is the largest Water Treatment plant in all of the eastern united states. This is a chemical used in the coal industry and according to local officials, it could be potentially harmful if swallowed. A lot of concern in that area and rightfully so. Thank you. Now to the latest on new Jersey Governor Chris Christie and the fallout from the rapidly unfolding scandal for him and his administration. Christie apologizing repeatedly during an extended press conference on thursday. Abcs jim avila is in ft. Lee, new jersey, the site of the traffic jams that touched off this scandal. For the normally bombastic Chris Christie it was a political walk of shame and perhaps more importantly, a template of blanket denial of any personal involvement that will now be examined by everyone from the pruz press corps to the fbi. It was governor Chris Christies worst day in politics ever and perhaps his most important. Forced to lower his voice and meekly visit the small town of ft. Lee to personally apologize to the mayor and its citizens. Mayor and i had a good, productive meeting. I accepted his apology. Reporter that may have been the easy part because he had to fire two of his closest aides. I am embarrassed and humiliated. Reporter gone are deputy chief of staff Bridget Anne Kelly and his political guru bill stepien. She was doomed by this email, time for some traffic problems in ft. Lee after the mayor endorsed christies opponent. The result, four days of commuter chaos and Public Safety delays that caused political retribution and closed access to the vital George Washington bridge. I had no knowledge or involvement in this issue in its planning or its execution and i am stunned by the abject stupidity. I am heartbroken. But when you think about what the potential federal crimes could be, it gets a lot tougher. Now, before 2010 they might have had something which is called an Honest Services statute meaning there was something that demanded that Public Officials engage in Honest Services. The Supreme Court struck that down saying that unless theres money or kickbacks involved, then theres no federal crime. But even without a federal crime you have Class Action Lawsuits right now. You have an inspector generals investigation. The last thing you want is investigations, particularly investigations where theres the power to subpoena document, et cetera, because that can elicit more embarrassing political information. Thats their greater concern is that the Legal Investigations will lead to embarrassing political information. Also all the subpoenas kind of freeze up the government. Absolutely. But i think the Class Action Lawsuit is a real long shot when youre talking about state officials engaging in official state duties. Matthew, whats the key to his political recovery . I think right now hes hostage to the truth. Hes hostage to the statements yesterday and i think if he continues to be open, transparent and humble, if the facts support what he said yesterday hell be okay. I actually believe if he gets through this and everything he said yesterday turns out to be true he could actually benefit from this because as you and i know most people and most politicians succeed have to have gone through serious adversity, overcome it and get to another level. If hes able to do that and still days and weeks ahead where well learn more, if hes able to do that he actually could be better off because of that adversity than he was before. Another three americans have been killed in the crash of a military aircraft. This time a reconnaissance plane like the one you see there crashed in afghanistan. It is the third fatal military crash this week alone on wednesday, a Navy Helicopter plunged into the atlantic killing two sailers, a third remains missing. And on tuesday, an air force Helicopter Crash during a Training Mission in england killing four crew members on board. Also breaking overnight a possible new crisis in afghanistan. That countrys President Hamid karzai is releasing more than 70 prisoners deemed a Security Threat by the u. S. Saying there is simply not enough evidence to hold them. Karzai has also delayed signing a longterm security deal with the united states. The Labor Department says only 74,000 jobs were created last year. Fewer people were, in fact, looking for work when the Unemployment Rate fell to 6. 7. Some high drama on the streets of san diego. A rogue driver led police on what seemed like a neverending chase until it ended in a hail of bullets. This morning, staggering video of a traffic stop gone terribly wrong. Theres too many shots being fired over there. Reporter four Police Officers opened fire on a 40yearold man inside this car in a san diego neighborhood. The incident started about an hour earlier when Police Reportedly pulled the man over for talking on his cell phone while driving. Thats when they say he fled leading them on a highspeed chase. Turn around and go block off a side street. Reporter the driver eventually slows letting a female passenger out of the car when his tires were blown. Police laid down another spike strip and seemed like the end but then the barrage of gunfire. Unloaded on him. Reporter overnight San Diego Police told abc news the officers only opened fire after the suspect raised a gun. Fearing for their safety. The safety of the public and the safety of other officers. The suspect did survive. He is in the hospital in Critical Condition and, of course, we will have an update as news becomes available. In new jersey, cameras rolling as you see that, a shopper barely avoid being run down by that car as it comes through the doors of a pharmacy. Wow. An elderly woman jumped the curb behind the wheel. Two air force officers with authority to launch Nuclear Missiles are being investigated for illegal drug use. The latest black eye and Martha Raddatz is tracking it all from washington. What is so startling about these accusations this morning is that this is not the first time there have been accusations of misconduct at Americas Nuclear arsenals. The air force facilities where officers are supposed to be ensuring our safety and the security of the Nuclear Weapons they maintain. This morning, fallout at one of the Nations Nuclear Missile Launch facilities. Two Nuclear Missile launch officers in charge of operating the nations Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles facing allegations of drug possession, removed from their positions pending an investigation. This bombshell coming the same day as a visit to a Nuclear Missile facility in wyoming by secretary of defense chuck hagel. And what you do every day there is no room for error, none. Reporter but this is just the latest in a series of scandals involving the men and women who operate the Nations Nuclear arsenal. Two top commanders overseeing Nuclear Weapons were fired last october. Investigations revealing one was gambling with counterfeit chips at an iowa casino while the other drinking so much on a visit to moscow, he even needed assistance standing. In 2007, four top ranking air force commanders were relieved of duty after a huge oversight left six Nuclear Warheads attached to a b52 bomber flown from north dakota to louisiana and not discovered for 36 hours. A 29yearold mother of three died on monday and a 41yearold father of six passing away from what doctors believe was the h1n1 virus. Abc news health and medical editor dr. Richard besser is here on the latest with this deadly strain. First of all, we were thinking about the families who lost their loved ones. They were young and had no Underlying Health issues. So incredibly sad. You know, its very hard to predict who is going to have a bad case of flu. Usually its the young and elderly but here you had someone who was sick since christmas. Someone else just sick for five days and they were young. And you have to ask why people in this age group. Theres a couple possibilities. Healthy young adults in the past have been less likely to get the flu vaccine. And for the past five years its included protection against h 1 n 1. Its not complete protection but its some. People who are older and born in 1950 or earlier were exposed to some strains of flu that may give them some protection to this strain out there now. How do you know, rich, if you have this particular strain of the flu . This year, 97 of all the flu thats out there right now is the h1n1 strain. If you have the flu thats what youve got so weve talked about the symptom, typical cold symptoms but a cough, high fever, body ache, that is the flu. High risk, call your doctor. To see if you need any medicine. 37 states now where its high. It is all over the place. So, you know, weve talked about how to prevent this and how to protect yourself. The States Health Department Director was on board and was killed. Sad, but, boy, that is incredible stuff we saw right there. Were going to turn to a new twist out of maryville, missouri, that captivated so much of the country where a prosecutor caused an uproar by dropping all charges against a young man accused of sexually assaulting a young girl blacked out from too much alcohol. New charges have been filed and matt gutman has the story. Reporter two years after being accused of raping this girl, 14yearold Daisy Coleman, Matthew Barnett pleaded guilty to a single misdemeanor charge for child endangerment. Matthew barnett accepts full responsibility for the conduct charged. Reporter the rape charges were dropped for lack of evidence that the high school Football Player sexually assaulted coleman at a house party in 2012. I remember being picked up by him and then drinking, but then everything after that was just black. In this case there was insufficient evidence to go forward on a Sexual Assault. Reporter in addition to the probation, Community Service having no contact with Daisy Coleman and paying 1800 for her Mental Health treatment, barnett was also forced to acknowledge via verbal apology that he endangered the life of the semiconscious High School Freshman by dumping her at her maryville home hours before dawn. I heard something in the front yard and i jumped up and ran out and found her laying in the yard. Her hair was wet and frozen. And i could see that she had frostbite on her feet. They had started to turn gray. She couldnt walk. She couldnt talk. She was completely not there. Reporter though barnett was originally charged with Sexual Assault and child endangerment both charges were dropped in 2012 in what some believe is special treatment because of his familys prominence in town. Last year a special prosecutor was appointed to investigate. Our review of this case will be without fear and without favor. Reporter neither coleman nor her mother attended the hearing thursday but in a Statement Read by the prosecution daisy says she was grateful that barnett took responsibility for his actions. Now, this has been devastating to Daisy Coleman. Right now in kansas city recovering after trying to take her own life earlier this week, but overnight she said shes now ready to move on. Well have much more on the toll its taken on Daisy Coleman, on her family and the town of maryville tonight on 20 20. Thanks. Ryan smith has more on this. You know, so much outrage and so much attention paid to the case, special prosecutor appointed. In the end misdemeanor . Right. Thats it. That goes to show you the role of the prosecutor in cases like this, whether its a local county prosecutor or the attorney general of the united states, you can only bring a case and charges when you can prove the elms of that crime and this prosecutor talked about how there was insufficient evidence to prove a case of Sexual Assault. Dig into that a little bit more, the girl is drunk to the point of unconsciousness, just 14 years old. Thats not enough . No, because this is what i would call a legal catch22. Shes given this alcohol she claims by this young man. She becomes inebriated, blacks out. For the prosecutor trying to prove the case she doesnt have enough evidence and information from the girl about what happened and makes it hard to prove the case. Daisy and her mom do seem to be somewhat supportive of the prosecutor. Thats i surprise to many people but then you think about what satisfies people in cases like this. Think about what she would have gone through if a trial occurred. Shed be on the stand facing intense crossexamination. In some ways, she would be on trial. Thats what people think about when they think about cases like this. So she wanted to get that out of the way, i think and get on with her life. New year, many of us have resolved to try, try to eat a healthier diet. How do you do it . Its cold outside. You want the comfort food. You know it helps to have emeril standing by to literally thank you, my friend. Help us veg out. I mean, this is all lets hit the vegetables hard today and were going to start with lasagna that smells delicious. It is delicious and what it is is a spinach and mushroom lasagna. Any Button Mushrooms you want. These are crimini mushrooms right here so ive sauteed a little onion and salt and pepper in olive oil. Thats the first step. Get that onion fragrant. Then what were going to do is add some garlic here. Okay. And, oh, yeah, and then also well add the mushrooms we sliced. All right. Okay. So well add those and cook those down. Are you going to add the mushrooms after you brown those onions . You want to saute the onions and get the flavor of the onions going first. Now, what were going to do is take some fresh spinach in olive oil and more garlic and were going to cook it down. Well cook it down. If it gets really if its wet, josh, what you want to do, you let it cool and squeeze it. At this point what were going to do is add some italian seasoning in here, and then what were going to do is add some of your favorite tomato red sauce, of course, you know, i have my own. Yes. So, look, let that simmer, now when this simmers with the spinach, now were ready to layer this thing, so we have the mushroom onion mixture and then we have the tomato sauce spinach mixture and then, of course, these are no bake lasagna something you can do with the kids. You want the kids debt them involved. You can help they can help you layer. Absolutely. Then all of a sudden this becomes a family project. Exactly. What do you mean no bake . This is no bake. You know, in the old days lasagna noodles, you had to prebake them, youd break half of them up. Heres what we do, start with that, we have three cheeses, parmesan, low fat cottage cheese and partially skimmed mozzarella cheese. Hi, ginger. Hi. How are you doing . I like your lasagna. So heres what we do, george. Now what were going to do josh, are you ready for this . Im ready. You can do this. So well layer the sauce, about a third and a third and a third, just nothing fancy, layer the sauce. Then we got the mushroom and onion mixture. So were going to sprinkle some of that around. Okay. And then what were going to do now is were going to do the cheese. Its really a wash, rinse, repeat. Boom, boom, boom. Exactly. So we got the cottage cheese. Cottage cheese, low fat. Its really great, as well. So yeah. And then bake it 350 for an hour, covered with foil for an hour. Okay. Then take the foil off and finish it, okay, it looks like this for about another 10, 15 minutes. So allow for an hour and an hour and a half. The soup is unbelievable. Cold outside. White bean. I didnt know that. This is a tuscan white bean and broccoli rabe soup and then what we did, we have ten vegetable, as many as you want with fermented black beans, sesame oil, soy sauce, thats what that is.
