But lets get right to the massive storm thats slamming the philippines. Its happening right now. Isnt it, sam . This is one of the lifetime events that i dont think well see in our lives again. When we look at this storm right now, that we know of on the planet, the fourthstrongest Tropical Cyclone to ever develop. It is the strongest ever to make landfall, ever, ever. You can take this. Let me show you what this looks like. Take this eye. And let me get just a little bit closer into this. You can see it better as it moves in toward the Northern Islands of the philippines. This is a monster storm. Really dropped only 30 Miles Per Hour in wind speed when it had its interaction with the islands here. Then it gets into more water and the story of this storm continues. But take words like destructive and devastating and we have to find new words. This morning, a deadly storm. Now being called the strongest Tropical Cyclone to hit land in recorded history. Heres an image of this massive storm from space. Statistically, more powerful and potentially more destructive than our most tragic storms. Superstorm sandy, hurricane katrina. Overnight, Supertyphoon Haiyan slammed into the philippines, forcing more than 150,000 families, thats 750,000 individuals, to evacuate, leaving countless stranded throughout the countrys more than 7,000 small islands. Wind gusts up to 235 Miles Per Hour, roughly the top speed of a formula one racer. And faster than any u. S. Storm. Its an astounding 300 miles wide, roughly the distance from boston to philadelphia. And will bring a storm surge likely to exceed 20 feet. It has all of the calling cards of a storm that we know here in the u. S. This is so much more powerful, the destruction, the damage, the water moving through, the wind, people having to evacuate. All that happening right now. And likely to continue to happen with this storm. So, well show you its past and its track. From the philippines, it has another opportunity to make landfall, still as a very strong storm in vietnam. Then kind of swirl in through laos. This thing will drop an awful lot of wind and rain. Look at this storm, 100 Miles Per Hour with the wind speeds by the time the storm is well inland, by 1 00 in the morning. A scary event. A lifetime event. So clear on that. Were going to turn to washington. Two major stories there today. The new apology from president obama on health care. And a possible breakthrough on negotiations to contain Irans Nuclear program. Abcs jon karl and Martha Raddatz with more on that. Jon, i begin with you and the president ial apology for a broken promise. Reporter you almost never hear a president say i am sorry. And barack obama is no exception to that. And this apology is not so much for the problems with the website. But for the millions of americans who have received cancellation notices from their insurance companies, despite his repeated promise over and over again that nobody would lose their insurance. I am sorry that they, you know, are finding themselves in this situation, based on assurances they got from me. Weve got to work hard to make sure that they know we hear them and that were going to do everything we can to deal with folks who find themselves in a tough position as a consequence of this. Reporter now, despite the apology, the president pointed out that those insurance policies being canceled are what he called sub par insurance. And he pointed out that once the website is up and running fully, people will be able to find better alternatives, many of them for less money. So, george, this was an apology, but it was an apology with caveats. The house is going to vote on a bill that would block any attempt to take away those policies from people who have them. White house reaction to that . Reporter white house has made it clear they do not see a need for a legislative fix. They want no bill here. They say they will work within the current system. Lets turn to Martha Raddatz right now. Secretary of state john kerry, martha, is now flying to geneva for Nuclear Negotiations with iran ahead of this possible break through. Reporter george, this is a surprise trip. Kerry was in the region but was not scheduled to go to geneva where the very serious negotiations have been taking place. This could well mean an agreement is likely. Any agreement would be just a first phase. This is how it would work. The iranians would have to freeze their Nuclear Program for as long as six months, in exchange some of the sanctions that have crippled parts of the iranian economy would be lifted, freeing up some muchneeded cash for the iranians. Martha, youre hearing opposition to this potential deal from the israeli Prime Minister and some members of congress. Reporter well, israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made very clear that israel utterly objects to this, saying iran would be getting the deal of the century. And that the u. S. Would be making a grievous mistake since iran would still have the capability to enrich uranium. And many members of congress are not happy about this, either. Okay, martha, thanks. Were going to have all of the breaking news on this on this week. And i go oneonone, with Chris Christie after his big one on tuesday. Now to josh with todays other top stories. Were going to begin with a developing story from los angeles. A horrifying incident at a rock concert. Witnesses say a man fell from an upper balcony during a blink 182 concert, at the hollywood palladium, falling face first from 20 feet in the air. The victim was rushed to the hospital. No word on his condition. We will have updates as news becomes available. Now to the economy, the Labor Department has just reported that 204,000 jobs were created last month. That was better than expected. That comes despite the government shutdown. The Unemployment Rate rose slightly 7. 3 largely because some of the government workers who were furloughed were counted as unemployed. The good news about the jobs this morning could end up being bad news for wall street. It might prompt them to scale back the federal Stimulus Program to keep Interest Rates low. An ohio man, recovering from a freak accident today. A propane tank fell from his forklift. And he accidentally ran over it. You will see, it ignites that fireball there. Just missed that passing car. With smoke still coming from his body, he did manage to escape. Thankfully, the man not seriously hurt. And a wild scene near dallas. Take a look. People enjoying lunch. We have a new twist this morning in the nfl bullying scandal. So many Miami Dolphins and players across the league, speaking up in defense of Richie Incognito, the player accused of tormenting his teammate. Some calling incognito the victim. Matt gutman has the latest. Reporter in his first Public Statement since the controversy began, Jonathan Martins attorney blitzed his clients alleged tormentors. Saying overnight that for 18 months, the 300pound martin, endured, quote, harassment that went far beyond the traditional locker room hazing, including a malicious physical attack on him by teammate and daily vulgar comments. Those including a rather infamous racial slur from Richie Incognito and a newly released alleged comment about martins sister, too crass for tv. That as martin was spotted leaving his parents l. A. Home on thursday. It was the first glimpse of the former dolphin lineman since he reportedly checked himself into a hospital for emotional stress last week. His attorney saying the issue wasnt martins toughness. But his treatment by his teammates. The alleged ring leader, incognito. Who his teammates now suggest is the victim. So much overwhelming support for Richie Incognito. Why do you think that is . Because weve been around him. We know what kind of guy he is. And we want everybody else to know that same thing. Richie is the one being attacked. And hes the one that the questions are being asked about. Reporter this morning, a new accusation against incognito. Overnight, wplg uncovered a Police Report where a female volunteer at a dolphins Golf Tournament accused him of harassment in may of 2012. In the Police Report, the woman claims a drunken incognito battered her and humiliated her with a golf club. Wplg reports no charges were filed. Incognitos representatives did not respond to our request to comment. What happens in a locker room is not politically correct. Its not going to be politically correct. This is a situation where Jonathan Martin was absolutely bullied and had nowhere to turn. And shame on the Miami Dolphins. Reporter the coaches are coming under increasing scrutiny. How much did they know . Were they aware of how much the hazing was affecting martin . The nfl has sent in a special investigator. While his findings could take some time. What seems clear right now, george and robin, incognito and martin might never suit up in a football uniform against, at least for the dolphins. Now, more on the bombshell from the fda. The agency calling for all transfats to be removed from our foods. Abc news health and medical editor, dr. Richard besser, is here to tell us more on this new ruling. We know, the fda says it estimates that it can prevent 20,000 heart attacks and 7,000 deaths. Huge. Eliminating transfat. A lot of people are asking, is it going to change the taste of the food at all . Yeah. Thats a good question. I dont think it will. In 2006, the fda required labeling of food. It has to list transfats. And yesterday, i went to the supermarket. And i went through the aisle. I was reading labels. And every food category, whether youre talking about popcorn, or cookies or taco shells, some products had the transfats and some didnt. And the consumer is buying both of those. And as a consumer, you see a bag of chips, and it says 0 transfats on the front of the label. And thats not true. Thats the heart of the story. Theyre not only saying no transfats. But theres a category of chemicals called partially hydrogenated oils. That are being banned that include that. You need to have good eyes. The first thing you want to do is check the nutrition label. You want it to say zero transfats. If it says zero, you have to look at the ingredient list. And look for those words partially hydrogenated oil. If it says that, it means it has transfats and you want to avoid that. Could it possibly be replaced by something thats more harmful for us . You know, it shouldnt be. Just because it doesnt have transfats doesnt mean its necessarily healthy. If using an artificial ingredient, the fda has to have it on the approved list. I think youre going to be okay there. Okay. Rich, thanks so much. Were going to turn to the shooting death of a teenager thats raising questions in detroit this morning. A home owner shot Renisha Mcbride on his porch and called it an accident. But now some believe that race may have played a role in the killing. Abcs alex perez is on the case. Reporter a deadly accident or coldblooded murder . This morning, the family of Renisha Mcbride is demanding answers and justice. Theyre arguing her brutal shooting death was the result of racial profiling. Renisha wasnt a bad kid at all. And renisha didnt deserve to die like this. Reporter the unarmed 19yearold was gunned down Early Saturday Morning in this mostly white neighborhood in dearborn heights, michigan. Officials say mcbride was involved in a car accident about 1 30 a. M. Parked her car and left on foot, looking for help. According to her family, mcbride knocked on the door of this home, asking for assistance after her cell phone died. Thats when a man at the home allegedly fired a. 12 gauge shotgun and killed her. He came to do somebody great bodily harm, what he done. He took my niece. Reporter family members say mcbride was shot in the back of the head as she walked away. But police, who are saying very little about the investigation, told the Detroit Free Press that mcbride was shot in the face. The alleged shooter claimed he believed the girl was breaking into the home. And the gun discharged accidentally. The homeowner was initially arrested but later released. Overnight, many in this community expressed their outrage. In a statement to abc news, prosecutors say theyve asked further investigation be conducted by the police before deciding whether any charges should be filed. But family members say, they will not rest until the person responsible for mcbrides death is behind bars. For Good Morning America, alex perez, abc news, chicago. So many questions yet to be answered. On another some history last night. It was quite a night. A gathering in North Carolina last night, to celebrate billy graham. The nations most famous evangelist, turning 95. Hundreds came on out. Big names were there, as well. Its always, the reverend with a serious message, delivering whats being called his final sermon. Abcs dan harris has the story for us. Reporter there he was, the legendary preacher, billy graham, waving from his wheelchair at his 95th Birthday Party in asheville, North Carolina, thursday night. In attendance, hundreds, including rick warren, sarah palin, Rupert Murdoch and donald trump. There were speeches and a starstudded rendition of happy birthday. To you reporter and the preacher himself releasing a video billed as his final sermon, in which, despite his age, he is as urgent and direct as ever. Our countrys in great need of a spiritual awakening. There have been times that ive wept as ive gone from city to city and ive seen how far people have wandered from god. Reporter the video was shot over the past year in Billy Grahams mountaintop home in North Carolina. With his dog by his side, and images of his long, storied career up on the shelf. He ministered to president s, everyone since truman, to huge crowds around the world, and to americans right in their living rooms. According to his son, billy graham has, for the past three years, wanted to preach one more time. And for a while, he thought that maybe he would be able to do this in a stadium. But he realized that he didnt have the strength. But he did it from his living room. The Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly pedestrian accident on a san jose freeway ramp and it shut down part of the roadway for two hours this morning a least two cars hit a 26yearold man trying to cross the northbound interstate 280 connecter to southbound 87. It happened around 5 00 this morning a third car may have also hit the pedestrian who died at the scene. The connector was closed for the Highway Patrol to investigate and clear the area. It was just reopened about a half hour ago. Investigators are now trying to determine why the man was walking on the freeway. You may remember that shocking video that got him fired. He was caught on tape, verbally and physically abusing his players in practice. This is the first sitdown interview since that scandal broke. Certainly, something you want to hear him answer the question. Then, what tom cruise says about whether katie holmes divorced him to protect their daughter from scientology. A lot of questions there. Also, it was an honor to bring you part one of our operation homecoming special. There they were, three soldiers serving in afghanistan. We had a chance to meet them and their families, serving here back at home. The service of military families, especially in time of war. Something we can never thank enough. Today, part two of that special behindthescenes look at the reunion, as they all found each other. And i can tell you theyre going to be in the studio. Theyre going to be here in the studio. Cant wait to see them again. Its a special one. And bringing babies, too. Were going to begin with the case of the utah doctor on trial for killing his wife. The testimony is over. The defense has rested. And the case could go to the jury as early as today. Abcs aditi roy has all the latest. Reporter after more than a dozen days of prosecution testimony, Martin Macneills defense team finally presented its case to the jury. Did you have occasion to associate with my client, mr. Martin macneill . Yes. Reporter for more than two hours thursday, with four witnesses, including one of the defendants former colleagues, macneills attorneys built a time line to show the utah physicians whereabouts on the day his wife died. We had two interactions that day. The first one was as he was leaving to pick up his kindergartner from her morning kindergarten, about a block or two away from the developmental center. Reporter prosecutors say macneill killed his wife, michele, by giving her a deadly dose of painkillers and putting her in a tub while she was recovering from plastic surgery. Macneill says he is innocent. The state says his motive was to continue an affair with gypsy willis. You continued holding yourself out as husband and wife . I believe so. Reporter did you get a marriage license . We did get a marriage lines license. We didnt actually get married, though. Reporter willis back on the stand thursday this time as the prosecutions last witness, reading jailhouse love letters she received from macneill when they were incarcerated fraud case. I want to be as good as i can be when i get out of here so you will still feel the same about me. I love you and miss you more than you can imagine. Was that reciprocated by you . At the time, i had lost most of my friends and all of my family. I wanted to be in contact with anyone i could be, yes. Reporter willis testified the two are no longer together. With both sides resting and closing arguments today, the jury will soon decide macneills fate. For Good Morning America, aditi roy, abc news, los angeles. Lets bring in abcs chief Legal Affairs anchor, dan abrams. The defense, pretty short. And very simple. Yeah. Theyre making two basic points. He might have had an alibi. They say he did have an alibi. And number two, this is an important point. He might not have been able to lift his wife out of the bathtub. Why is that so important . Remember when he calls 911, he says i cant lift her out myself. He sends his daughter next door to get the neighbors. He specifically says i need a mans help to get her out of the tub. And prosecutors have alleged this was just his effort to delay getting help. That he wanted to make sure, in effect, that she died. The defense, by presenting this witness, is at least trying to provide this jury with some ammo to come forward and say, you know what, maybe its true that he couldnt have lifted her out of the tub alone. But, look, this is the sort of thing where jurors are employing to apply common sense. Have an ergonomics expert say we hoisted this. We did this test. This is the thing where jurors are going to say, if my blank was in the tub, would i be able to lift the person out by themselves . And i think that thats the problem Martin Macneill has here. Most people are going to look at this and say, if my wife or husband was dying, in my bathtub, i am sure i would be able to somehow move that person out of the tub in some way, shape or form. So, thats the difficulty he has. Closing arguments coming up now. Expect prosecution to focus on what the evidence does show. The defense will focus on what it doesnt show. Emotional and revealing conversation with mike rice, the rutgers basketball coach who was fired seven months after video surfaced of his shocking treatment of his players. I sat down with rice for his first extensive Television Interview since the scandal that cost him his job seven months ago. You have likely never heard of former rutgers coach mike rice, before rice was featured in the highlight reel seen around the world. Take a look at this shocking video making headlines this morning. A basketball coach from rutgers university, caught on tape, attacking his college players. Reporter watch as he punches players from behind, hurling balls at their heads and their groins. Big, strong athletes, against their coach, defenseless. And when you turn up the sound, you hear the verbal abuse. Ranting, swearing, even screaming homophobic slurs. I met mike rice and his wife, kerry, last week for his first sitdown Television Interview. After the public had seen that video, what was it like at home . Obviously, it was devastating for all of us. The video being played over and over again. My first reaction when i saw the tape was, one of embarrassment. Of shock. Of sadness that i would put myself in a situation like this. Reporter you were a bully. There was some actions that were certainly that were bullying, yes. Reporter mikes credo, practice must be harder than games. That temper, never far from the surface. At the time i thought it was necessary to get my team or that individual to be tough. Reporter some of the harshest criticism came as a result of the antigay slurs. Looking for answers, mike reached out to students involved with glsen, the gay, lesbian and straight education network. The girl said youre no better than a bully, you helped perpetuate that ugly stereotype that were lesser, were softer, were this, were that. That was a hard lesson, for sure. Reporter where do you go from here, mike . You go and you continue sorry. You go and continue to be a good father. Where that takes me, im not real sure. At least two cars hit a 26yearold man trying to cross the northbound interstate 280 connecter to southbound 87 t happened around 5 this morning a third car may also have hit the pedestrian, who died at the scene. Investigators trying to determine why the man was walking on the freeway. The road was reopened about an hour and a half ago. More commute information now from leyla. Traffic is recovering in that area but we are being embraced by fog. Starting with the golden gate bridge, you come through the tunnel, socked in at this hour. It was a labor of love. A passion project to be sure. The reunions got us all, every, single time. We saw them on television. I wanted to trace a moment back on both sides. And it became a whole lot more, as i got to really meet these families. Both upstate new york and over in afghanistan. We traveled there and back again, to look at the hardships and the sacrifices made by all these heroes, as they defend the freedoms we hold so dear. Today, you see the moments that made the sacrifices worthwhile. Military homecomings. So beautiful. Patriotic and quintessentially american. And never failing to conspire the soul. Daddy. Reporter and in just a few minutes, three families are going to experience that singular joy. Nine months. Im kind of getting nervous. Like, i dont think i would. But i dont know. Like, im just so excited to see him. Reporter to fully appreciate this moment, we wanted to trace it back in time. So, we met with three military families. And then, we flew to afghanistan. To meet with their husbands and fathers. Staying away from her has been pretty hard. Staying away from the kids has been even harder. Reporter with two young kids, little patrick and 6yearold izzy, Jennifer Stewart runs a tight ship. While husband, major michael stewart, serves in ghazni afghanistan. I cant wait to tell him how absolutely certain and unquestionably thankful i am to have found the person i am supposed to be with. And sometimes you dont know that until that person isnt close enough to tell. Reporter jesse fuller and her husband, michael, had a baby boy, brantley, last december. Sergeant fuller deployed to afghanistan just two weeks later. Im a big cry baby. Reporter you are . Definitely. Im sure i will be tunnel vision. Everything will be black around me. And im just going to see her and my son. Reporter brittany lotts and her husband, captain william lotts, had their first child in july. But captain lotts was in afghanistan when his baby girl, finley, was born. He has yet to even meet her. Knowing you werent going to be there for the birth, what was that like . It was pretty hard. I mean, you cant you only have the birth of your first child once. It will probably be one of the best moments. Of life. cause hell be home and hell be safe. Reporter as part of the u. S. Military drawdown, we witnessed the soldiers close their base in ghazni. This time, for good. Then, its wheels up from afghanistan, bound at long last, for home. Yeah, im really excited right now. Reporter its been nine months. And now, that moment of joy and love and completion has finally arrived. Left. Left. Left. I cannot keep myself together. Reporter and then, just like that, theres nothing that can hold the 6yearold back from her father for even one more moment. Go. Go. Oh, my goodness. How are you . Reporter and then, rightfully, its her moms turn. Hi, baby. I missed you, honey. I missed you, too. Reporter for sergeant fuller, its tunnel vision, that search, as if in slowmotion, until success. And for all they knew or really cared, captain lotts and brittany could have been the only two in the gym. Im a little rusty. You want to meet finley . Honey, its daddy. Its daddy, sweet girl. Were going to watch tv. Im so excited. We get to watch tv. Reporter sheersly, how does a couch sound right now . My couch, with these critters on it, i would do anything for. Reporter what do you think, 270 days later . Just like me. Im patient. I seeing him with her. Its the sweetest thing ever. Reporter how did she feel . She felt pretty light. New. And fragile. It felt pretty amazing. We are honored to have the heroes with us today. Captain lotts and his family. And captain stewart and his family here with us today. You know, the one theme that echoed both in afghanistan and here at home was that all of you just didnt want to feel forgotten. And i know weve been at war for so long now, that it was important. And so, i just want to thank you, first of all, for letting us tell your story. It has been a wonderful experience to have. And i want to start with you. How was it . We saw. But hows it been with your little daughter, finley . Its been great. You know, theres nothing like being, you know, being a dad. Theres kind of a wholeness and fulfillment thats unequaled. And you know, it really transcends anything i can put into words. She getting heavier . A little bit, yeah. Shes just like her dad. Shes going to be, you know shes pretty long for her size, for her age. Terrific. Its the everyday things. A and, jennifer, i know you said, this day was going to be bigger, the reunion, bigger than your wedding day. Why . Because i think we mentioned this when we were together, when you get married, youre in the church, you have the anticipation of what is coming. But when youve been married, you know what you have. And i just could not wait to have that back. And we know that. And its what every military family wants. And its what we all wait for. And when we get it, its the sweetest thing. How have the critters been . Hows the couch, mike . Its awesome. It started 7 00 the next morning. Patricks in his crib. He said, daddy come get me. And it was you know, i was back. Look at him. When that happens, youre back. And the two of these kids have been absolutely awesome. And being back with jen, everythings back to normal. And were completely good. I know jen and brittany both, and jesse, as well, talked about the fear of your husbands abroad. They are at home now. If nothing else, its another chance for all of us to thank all of you, all of you, for your service and your sacrifice. And thank you for letting us be a little bit a little part of your lives for a few days. Thank you. Thank you very much. [ applause ] and i know, robin and sam both, military children.
