Why her message has many moms fired up this morning. And good morning, america. Big, packed wednesday. A lot to get to this morning, including the breaking details on that spirit plane. So scary. Smoke so thick, passengers could barely see each other. They were sending those last texts from the air. Cant imagine what that must have been like. Were also learning of an arrest overnight in the l. A. X. Dry ice bombing case. A 28yearold baggage handler. Well have more on that in a moment. Lets get to washington. The dangerous budget brinksmanship, just hours before a deadline that could bring economic catastrophe. A last minute stab at solving the crisis collapsed in the house yesterday. New talks picked up in the senate again late last night. And abcs jon karl is here with all of the latest. Good morning, jon. Reporter with zero hour almost here, democratic and Republican Leaders in the senate are pushing at long last a bipartisan plan that would end the shutdown and prevent default. The question now, is the damage already done. In an interview tuesday with wabc, president obama predicted Senate Leaders would, at long last, put an end to the impasse. What weve seen amongst Senate Democrats and republicans is a recognition that there are ways for us to do this that doesnt damage the economy. Reporter speaker of the house john boehner made a lastditch effort to find a solution. But the move went up in flames. Opposed by Tea Party Republicans before the vote was even called. Make no mistake, the bill the republicans are putting on the floor today is a decision to default. Reporter the house failure put the spotlight back on democratic and Republican Leaders in the senate. Reviving a deal that would reopen the government, but only until january 15th. And the risk of default, but only until february 7th. And make no major changes to obama care. The republican demand that led to the shutdown in the first place. The senate deal would set the stage for yet another showdown in just three months. But president obama predicted that next time republicans wont push to the brink. The republicans recognizing this was not a good strategy. And seeing a horrible reaction from the american people. Im pretty sure theyre not going to run this play again. Reporter as this showdown moves towards end game, House Republicans are the clear losers. They push to the brink and have nothing to show for it. This has been a battle with no winners. Just a blow to u. S. Credibility and the prospect of yet another showdown three months from now. George . And thats assuming we get through this one. Likely to get through this in the next couple days. What has to happen, is the senate has to pass this deal if it comes together today. And the house cant make any changes. They just have to pass it. If not, were back at the beginning again. Reporter theres no time to make any changes. The house will have to simply accept whatever the senate does or do nothing. Right now the big question is, will speaker of the house john boehner allow a vote on this senate plan even though the majority of House Republicans will almost certainly oppose it. I believe he will, but they havent said. Okay, jon karl, thanks very much. And the clock continues to tick. And with the debt crisis looming, a number of serious scenarios could play out if the country goes into default. Abcs Rebecca Jarvis is at the New York Stock Exchange on what it could mean for your money. Good morning, rebecca. Reporter robin, this morning, the nation on poe base, fitch warning that the nations Credit Rating the sterling aaa status amired around the world could be in jeopardy because of the brinkmanship coming out of washington. They are the three things in motion thursday if lawmakers cant reach a deal. First, like a maxed out credit card, we hit our limit. At the stroke of midnight, the country, by law, cannot borrow another penny. Second, tough choices. With just twothirds of the money to cover the bills, lawmakers have to choose who and what gets paid on time. Among our commitments, 12 billion to Social Security on october 23th. 6 billion in interest on our debt october 31st. And 58 billion, to Social Security, medicare and military and government pensions november 1st. And finally, default. No one knows the exact moment it will happen. Then, on partisan Congressional Budget Office says says between october 22nd and november 1st. The minute the u. S. Misses a payment to Social Security, medicare, or our debt, its happened. Were a nation in default. And even though the clock is ticking down, were so close to the likelihood of a deal still looking grim. The stock markets are opened 100 points higher this morning, robin. Like you said, looks like theyre going to open up. They better be right. Lets hope so. Lets get the latest on the dry ice bombs that created so much havoc at l. A. X. The last couple of days. A suspect has been charged with a felony. He works at the airport. And abcs david wright has the story. Reporter according to the lapd, the suspect now in custody, is 28yearold dicarlo bennett, a baggage handler. Bennett worked for the Ground Company serviceair, as a ramp supervisor. The lapd says there were a total of three dry ice bombs. And all three were found in restricted areas, away from passengers. One blew up sunday in an employee bathroom in terminal 2. Another exploded device was found monday on the tarmac. And a third bomb did not detonate. No one was injured in any of these incidents. But some flights were delayed. Bennetts motives are unclear. But officials tell the associated press, he was riding in a van with a supervisor and other coworkers, when he decided to plant one of the dry ice bombs. The a. P. Says those in the van were made aware of the dry ice. But no other arrests have been made. Actually can blow up with as much force and do as much damage to an individual as a pipe bomb. Reporter Authorities Say the bombs were similar to ones you can find all over youtube. 20ounce soda bottles filled with dry ice. Kids cap them off so the co2 gas has nowhere to go. That huge boom can be dangerous. Which is why California Law makes no distinction between dry ice bombs and other improvised explosive devices. Ironically, the dry ice used in these bombs probably came from an airplane. Airlines typically use dry ice to keep the food fresh in the galley. As for bennett hes on 1 million bail and could face jail for each crime. George. Josh, you had a hairy moment at Spirit Airlines. Yeah, we saw at the beginning of the show. What a terrifying moment. A Spirit Airlines flight from dallas to atlanta. An apparent mechanical failure. Passengers said it sounded like one of the engines exploded shortly after takeoff. Then, they saw flames. Then, smoke filled the cabin. The situation so scary, one man texted his wife to say, quote, were on fire. I love you. We saw the flames come up the side of the plane, which lit up the whole inside of the plane. It looked like the inside of the plane was on fire. Of course, it was on the outside engine. Plane started shaking violently. After that, the plane started filling up with smoke. Miraculously, the plane safely returned to dallas. No injures reported, thankfully. Spirit calls the incident a possible mechanical issue. That remains under investigation. Also breaking overnight, a boat carrying migrants has capsized off the coast of florida. Four people are confirmed dead at this hour. The coast guard confirm the 11 others have been rescued so far. They hail from haiti and jamaica. Its unclear how many more people may have been on board as crews still searching the area a short time ago. And a suspected al qaeda member who was once one of the worlds mostwanted terrorists has pleaded not guilty in a new york courtroom. Abu anas al libi was captured in libya and is now charged in connection with the u. S. Embassy bombings in africa that killed 224 people. In court on tuesday, al libi said he cannot afford a lawyer. And the judge signed a medical order to al libi can be treated for what is being called a severe case of hepatitis c. And finally, we want you to know the story behind a powerful and inspiring photo. Take a look at this. Army ranger josh hargis, in the hospital, after being gravely wounded in afghanistan. He got a visit from his commander just the other day. And his wife says that what happened moments later left not a dry eye in the room. Taylor hargis opened a letter from the commander of the u. S. Armys 3rd ranger battalion in afghanistan. For any military wife, a moment of dread. The commander had written that her husband, josh, was seriously wounded. An afghan woman had detonated a suicide vest. Four members of joshs team were killed. And it had taken two hours to get josh to the hospital. But josh was alive. Later writing on facebook, taylor explained, josh was immediately pushed through a series of surgeries. And emerged hours later into an intensive care unit. He was being moved to germany. But first, a tradition. The commander would award josh the purple heart for his sacrifice. As the ceremony began, everybody thought josh was unconscious. When something truly remarkable happened. He somehow found the strength to slowly raise his arm, extend his fingers and salute. Pure determination that brought grown men standing by his bedside to tears. And so, once again, to josh hargis and Taylor Hargis and all the men and women overseas and all their families back at home, complete and total thank you for your sacrifice and your service. So strong. The doctors were trying to put his arm down. They thought he was having a seizure. Some sort of reaction. And, no. Josh hargis knew what he was doing. Thats awesome. Thank you, josh elliott, for that. Now, to the Facebook Post that led to the arrest of two, young girls in connection with what police say was the Cyber Bullying suicide, of a 12yearold girl, who jumped off a tower after allegedly being tormented online. The oldest of the two arrested, a 14yearold, waking up in jail this morning. Were going to hear from the passionate sheriff who brought the charges. Well hear from him in just a moment. But first abcs matt gutman with the latest on the story. Reporter calling this a nightmare they want to end. The parents of the 14yearold girl accused of being the bully ring leader are defending their daughter. Have you ever thought she was a bully . Have you been told that she was a bully by the school . Never once. Never once. Reporter telling abc news exclusively overnight, their daughter charged with felony aggravated stalking, could not have done it. You would check her facebook . I would check her facebook every time she would get on it. Every night she would get on. Reporter you checked her facebook every night. Yes. Reporter but the father of the other alleged bully, tells abc news he wishes he could do more. I feel horrible about the whole situation. Its my fault that maybe i dont know more about that kind of stuff. I wish i did. Reporter on tuesday, polk county sheriff, grady judd, painted a vile picture of the two girls. There were statements such as you should drink bleach and die. Reporter the sheriff was naming names. And taking the extraordinary step of brandishing pictures of the two minors. The reason we rushed these arrests quicker than we wanted to is because of this post. Yes, i bullied rebecca. And she killed herself. But i dont give a and you can add the last word yourself. Reporter but the parents of one of the girls charged, flatly denied it. Saying their daughters facebook had been hacked. Is that something that your daughter would write . Into no she wouldnt write Something Like that. Shes not the type of girl that would say Something Like that. Reporter this has been so intense, the parents asked their faces not to be shown. Abc news is not revealing either identity because both have been charged as juveniles. The girls arrest brought a sliver of relief to her mother. I felt a weight had been lifted. I cried. It was a mixture of tears. It was relief. It was sadness because beccas not here. Reporter this weekend, robin, would have been sedwicks 13th birthday. Now, the other 14yearold is waking up in this jail behind me. The parents of both girls worried that after all of this exposure, their daughters lives might also be destroyed. Robin . All right. In matts piece, we heard from the parents of the two girls who were arrested. What led to their arrests . Well, we had them under investigation from the time that rebecca jumped from the tower. We heard immediately from all of the Little Friends that they were that rebecca was being bullied by these two girls. And as a result, we were conducting an investigation. But what rushed the arrest yesterday was because of a post that one of the girls put on her facebook saturday morning. Can you believe, after all of the problems the parents still allowed them to have their facebook account . They still let their child, their 14yearold, get on facebook at 1 00 a. M. On saturday morning and say reprehensible things about the deceased young girl that committed suicide, because their daughter bullied her and finally pushed her over the edge. And rebeccas parents, they pulled her out of school. They knew she was having problems. That she was cutting herself. That they did as much as they could. Unfortunately, it was not enough. Can you just explain a little bit more about the situation that rebecca and her parents found themselves in . Rebecca was a fragile child. Thats why these words hurt so much. And her parents worked hard. They had her in counseling. They pulled her out of school. They actually successfully separated her from the bullies. Except for what . Your electronic devices. One of the bullies told rebecca, drink bleach and die. Nobody likes you. And unfortunately, rebecca took that to heart. And i can tell you this. Were not putting up with it. Thats why we locked these two girls up. And anybody else that cyber bullies and we can show a stalking charge, well put them in jail, too. Youre a father. Youre a grandfather. What is it about this case that you have just said, enough . Ive done this my entire adult life. And i can tell you, when i stood there at the base of that cement tower and saw that baby, that 12yearold, deceased on the ground, it broke my heart. And i know it will break the hearts of everyone else across the country if they were in the position i was in. Were going to see that the full weight of the law comes down on them. And we want to send a message to the others in the community, not just the kids, but anyone who cyber stalks or stalks or bullies. If we can make a case, youll be arrested because people deserve to live a healthy, normal life. Not tormented by bullies. Thank you very much. Where a swimmer off the coast of california came facetoface with this 18foot long sea monster. Abcs nick watt has the story. Reporter a snorkeler off the coast of Catalina Island, came facetoface with this. A fish with the eye the size of a grown mans fist. Oh, my goodness. Is this deep rising . Open water . And 20,000 leagues under the sea all rolled into one . The brave snorkeler who happens to work for the Catalina Island marine institute, dragged the dead sea monster to shore by its tail, where it took 15 people to pick it up for this photo. What in the name of neptune is this thing . These creatures are found in deep sea. About 3,000 feet deep. Reporter oarfish, the longest bony fish known to man, can reach 56 feet long. And they live more than a half mile down beneath the waves. And this one is a relative tiddler at 18 feet. This, right here, is the first ever footage of a living oarfish in its natural habitat filmed by the gulf serpent project at the Louisiana State university. A lot coming up on that. We begin with a different story. A grisly murder. A grad student accused of killing his best friend. He told police his girlfriend was cheating with the victim. Linsey davis is here with the latest. Reporter good morning, george. Its unclear if there was cheating going on. It does appear that 24yearold raul guptas Birthday Celebration over the weekend has not only ended the life of his longtime friend. But potentially guptas life, as he knows it. This morning, raul gupta, a gifted graduate student at George Washington university, is in jail. Accused of fatally stabbing his high school friend, 23yearold mark roi, a law student. Saturday night, into the wee hours, there was a dangerous cocktail of emotions, fueled by heavy drinking. There were friends that were together in washington, d. C. , sharing a good time with mr. Gupta, celebrating his birthday. Reporter but that good time took a turn for the worse when three of them, gupta, roi, and guptas girlfriend, returned to her apartment. Authorities were called just before 3 30 a. M. On sunday. They could see bloodstains on the walls. And they could see mr. Gupta sitting down at the base of the bed, like he was in despair. Reporter according to the charging papers, gupta told police, my girl was cheating with my buddy. I walked in on them cheating. And i killed my buddy. She made a muttering statement that his girlfriend had been cheating on him. And that the individual involved, that he had actually did it. Reporter police say gupta claims he was woken up by his girlfriend yelling. But she says it was gupta who woke her up yelling, and telling her to call 911. Gup guptas Attorney Says the evidence will show he has a valid defense. But this morning, the honor student is being held on 2 million bail, charged with seconddegree murder. And guptas attorney saying he believes the evidence will show he has a valid defense. And calls it tragic for him to be held on a high bond. Gupta told police he was acting in selfdefense. Thanks. Lets get more from chief Legal Affairs anchor, dan abrams. It sounds like either going to be defending himself or defense of another. And i say that because both their statements, that relate to both those issues. The Authorities Saying that on the one hand, he was saying he was defending himself. His buddy was effectively going to try to kill him. At another point, he hears his girlfriend yelling. These are the seeds of possible defenses. But his lawyer has got to be really careful. The last thing this lawyer wants is almost any of these statements coming out. This lawyer is going to try to get the statements excluded from evidence. Partly because one of the complications, seems everyone was pretty blacked out drunk. Imagine if every case, i was high on drugs. I was drunk. Wed be seeing people walking out right and left. That in and of itself does not get someone off. But there has to be the intent. Youre talking about seconddegree murder here. Not manslaughter. And manslaughter, you can just sort of say, well, there was no intent to do it. Seconddegree murder, which is the charge here, you do have to have intent. Thats whats surprising. Usually the heat of passion incidents lead to manslaughter. It would go to a plea. Typical case where you see charge of seconddegree murder. Plea on manslaughter. A sentence somewhere in the fiveyear range. But im sure that his lawyer would say, were not pleading. Were going to trial. We have a defense. We have a defense. Dan abrams, thanks very much. Another interesting case to talk about, guys. A onetime lawyer, who police say pulled off a string of bank robberies, even shot a state trooper. The fbi is now involved. And he could face federal charges. Abcs gio benitez has the story. Reporter look closely because this is unlike any bank robber youve seen before. Police say thats 64yearold warren bladder, seen here robbing a smalltown Missouri Bank this summer. And it turns out gladders has a past with the law. I dont know if ive ever profiled a case where a lawyer is robbing banks. Reporter thats right. Gladders was once a lawyer. He graduated from one of st. Louiss top private schools. And the Washington University school of law. Hes suspected of at least five other robberies. And the latest one, police say he almost got away with 40 grand. But then, gladders allegedly got into a shootout with a 26yearold state trooper. The trooper was struck pretty much right in the chest from a round by his handgun. The trooper returned fire. Reporter luckily, the officers bulletproof vest saved his life. Gladders hit, too, being treated. Why would a seemingly affluent lawyer, who would become president of his own dry cleaning business, end up robbing a bank at gunpoint . Investigators have yet to release a motive. This case just screams of desperateness. Something terribly wrong has gone on in mr. Gladders life. Reporter gladders appeared in court tuesday, facing a slew of assault and robbery charges. This morning, the fbi confirms to abc, the agency will pursue federal charges. Gladders has not entered any plea. For good morning america, gio benitez, abc news, new york. Then, were going to add some lamb right here and pork. We mix it up. And stir it up and get it brown. Whatever meats. And the combo meat is off titen times it gives you texture. A little more richness to it. I love it when it gets the caramelized color here. This is amazing. Look at this. We have a nice, beautifully roasted were going to add some red wine and some stock to this now. A Little Chicken stock. Throwing this in. If youre forcing us. Throw in a little red wine and sauce. This has been cooking for a bit. Were going to add the chicken livers in this in a second. Add the tomatoes. Want to add a little bit of cream. We reduce this by half. Really gets the sauce superdeveloped. Very rich. Look at that color. Beautiful. Once we have that down. You see the color. Really rich. Totally beautiful. Were going to add some fresh herbs and chicken livers at the last second. This is where we get that french touch to it. Chicken livers has been added. A little bit of herbs here. Butter if you want.
