Operation this morning. And wait until you hear who hes blaming. And airborne. Two porsches collide on the track in virginia. A huge crash. Coming within inches of people watching the action, including the cameraman. Are these the luckiest people in america this morning . Good morning, everybody. We want to get straight to the breaking news overnight, as we learn more about the twin terror raids carried out by American Special forces in africa. One of the operations was in libya. Resulted and the capture of a head terror chief wanted for 15 years. The other was in somalia, with navy s. E. A. L. S, in a firefight with the group believed to be responsible for the mall attack in kenya. This morning, we have team coverage. We start with abcs chief Global Affairs correspondent Martha Raddatz in washington. Good morning, martha. Reporter good morning, bianna and dan. These raids were swift and dramatic and netted a man who the u. S. Has been hunting down for more than a decade. The raids carried out by a navy s. E. A. L. Team in somalia and u. S. Operators in libya happened nearly simultaneously. Military officials confirming to abc news that in libya, special operators captured one of americas mostwanted terrorists, abu anas al libi. Al libi, accused as a mastermind in the massive bombings of two u. S. Embassies in 1998 that left hundreds dead. Military Officials Say al libi is being held aboard a u. S. Navy ship until he can be brought to new york to stand trial. Once youre indicted for an event like that, the u. S. Wont give up until theyre either killed or in custody. Reporter within hours in somalia, military sources tell abc news, members of s. E. A. L. Team 6 targeted a Senior Leader of the Al Qaedalinked group that claimed responsibility for septembers Westgate Mall attack in kenya. The s. E. A. L. S in the predawn darkness emerged from the indian ocean to storm a militant compound on the beach in a sown south of mogadishu. The s. E. A. L. S faced more resistance than expected. A firefight broke out. The s. E. A. L. S retreated without being able to verify if the target was killed. Talking about an area thats awash in weapons. Theres little to no governance. So, the degree of risk is very high. Reporter nonetheless, somali officials called the strike successful. And this morning, secretary of state john kerry called the men in both operations courageous. We hope this makes clear that those members of al qaeda and other terrorist organizations literally can run but they cant hide. Reporter no americans were hurt in the operations. The u. S. Says the result is a serious blow to al qaeda and its affiliates. Bianna . Fortunate that americans were not hurt. Martha, can you talk about the timing of these attacks, though . The official line seems to be that the timing of the two raids seems to be coincidental. What are your sources saying . Were they coordinated . Reporter its clearly unusual you would have the raids so close together. But at this hour, im told it was largely coincidental. The troops were in place. The conditions right. And that can include things like the weather, the ocean tide and of course where the target is. But in the case of somalia, the s. E. A. L. S had to pull back. There is always the unexpected in these operations. Coincidental. But definitely dramatic. Martha, thank you. Lets talk about abu anas al libi. There was a 5 million bounty on al libis head. And abcs chief investigative correspondent, brian ross, is here now. Brian, this is a highranking al qaeda official, with a long history. Absolutely. At the age of 49 hes one of the few remaining core al qaeda leaders, close to the original bin laden leadership, still operating in libya and wanted for years as one of the people who helped to plan those deadly Embassy Bombings in africa in 1998. U. S. Officials have been telling me for months about concern that al libi was operating with impunity in libya. He became too comfortable and underestimated the determination of the u. S. To track down terrorists like himself. So talk a little bit more about whats going to happen next for him. As martha reported, we believe hes being held on a u. S. Navy ship now. What is likely happening, we are told, is hes being questioned before being turned over to the fbi for a flight to new york where he will stand trial for the Embassy Bombing charges. Theres a lot he might know about current al qaeda operations. Perhaps about what happened in benghazi. And certainly about future planned attacks. His capture could be important operationally but a huge intelligence coup for the u. S. Potentially but heres the sensitive question. How did they extract that information from him at this point . Theres guidelines about that. It will be watched very closely. How tough they are to get information out of him before he becomes part of the legal system here in the u. S. Right. This, again, as i said, supersensitive area. A long future in front of him at this point. We may not see him in new york for weeks, perhaps. Depending on how well the interrogations go. Brian, thank you. Theres a lot more to talk about here. Lets get back to washington and check in with George Stephanopoulos who will be hosting this week later this morning. George, good morning. We know that the president has promised to end the wars in afghanistan and iraq. But he has really made a point of continuing to go after suspected terrorists, hasnt he . From the very beginning of his presidency, john, thats exactly right. Very aggressive, even though he is pulling out from iraq and afghanistan. The drones were dramatically escalated under president obama and facing some questions about that from congress. Whats interesting about these raids are, that these were not drones. These were manned raids, navy s. E. A. L. Team 6, going in. I guess theyre the definition of essential Government Employees doing this in the midst of the Government Shutdown, six days in. You mentioned, george, the Government Shutdown. What impact, if anything, does the news over the weekend have . You have an interview with john boehner today. Hes facing immense pressure within his own party. Is there any sort of resolution he can come up with . None coming. Youre right about the pressure building, bianna. When you look at whats been happening, you saw members of Congress Come back in yesterday, and say everybody thats been furloughed by the government is going to get paid. They dont want to get attacked for not paying those Government Employees. And were seeing defense secretary chuck hagel over the weekend announce that all just about all of the civilian pentagon employees who had been furloughed can go back to work monday morning. The members of congress dont want to be vulnerable to these kinds of attacks. But right now, Speaker Boehner is holding firm. Saying he is not yet ready to pass a clean government funding resolution that would reopen the government this week. Not yet ready to pass a clean extension of the debt limit. Thats the far more serious crisis that could be coming in the next ten days or so. Thats what theyre going to press him on this morning. George, all of the polls in the case of the majority of americans do blame republicans for this stalemate. But that can change overnight. How much pressure does the president face so he could face the blame, as well especially as we get closer to the debt ceiling limit . Hes got to worry about that. Of course, the president , what his team has said if we go over the debt limit and risk default, that would be catastrophic for the United States economy. But i got to say, from the president on down, the white house and democrats united around the idea that they are not going to negotiate around this debt limit or around the Government Shutdown. Now, the trick at the end is going to be for the president to make some kind of concession to the republicans to give them an exit ramp, as well, without admitting that hes doing it. As for now, hes dug his heels in. In fact, both sides have. It will be an interesting conversation youll have with him. Thank you so much, george. You can see all of georges exclusive interview with House Speaker john boehner later this morning on abcs this week. Now, were going to turn to the extreme weather playing out through large parts of the country. A monster tornado taking out an airport, while others are digging out from an epic snowstorm. Just a tropical depression. The remnants, 100 miles away or so. All warnings and watches canceled. And our focus has been really on that blizzard in south dakota and wyoming and of course, the Severe Weather. More than 90 Severe Weather reports this week. Two new confirmed tonds just yesterday. It got pitch black and lots of noise. Most of us hid for cover. Reporter one day later, another reported tornado, in tennessee. And in rapid city, south dakota so many opening a snowcaked door to this. That recordbreaking blizzard, swallowing parts of the state in a surreal two to even four feet of snow. Folks plowing walls of snow to get out. I wish it would have waited a little bit longer. Little too early for me to have this winter. Reporter all of the intense weather coming just as whats left of karen sits over the ocean. But a shelter in belle chasse still remains almost at capacity, despite evacuation orders changing from mandatory to voluntary. They feel more comfortable about the flood threat being lowered. But are still concerned about the winds. Reporter even though karen is fashionably late, a lot of the gulf coast is very happy about that. But there is still some effect. After it comes through tonight and tomorrow, rough surf is along the coast there, right to the panhandle of florida and up to two inches of rain in that area. Including new orleans, mobile and pensacola. And behind the front that brought the snow, drying out enter cooling down. Were going to turn, now, to a horrifying tiger attack at an Exotic Animal park. A female worker mauled. Doctors pulling off incredible efforts to try to save the womans arm. This attack, raising a lot of questions, once again, about the safety of these socalled backyard zoos. Abcs rob nelson is here with more. Hey, rob. Reporter good morning. Good morning, everyone. Some terrifying moments for a worker at a zoo in oklahoma. The victim of a violent attack that is yet another reminder of the danger of working with wild animals. This morning, were getting a closer look at the zoo in oklahoma where a female worker was brutally attacked by a male tiger early saturday morning. The incident happened here at the gerald wayne interactive zoo and park in oklahoma. According to a spokesperson, the tiger bit the womans hand, violently pulling her into the cage through a hole just four inches wide. Despite initial fears the worker would lose her arm, surgeons were able to save it. Shes doing well. But admits the attack was her fault. Every once in a while, people let their guard down, working with animals like this. And they forget that theyre animals. Reporter he says this is the first incident of its kind to happen at this small zoo in rural oklahoma, where he also lives and performs. But this is hardly the first time weve heard of animal attacks at these socalled roadside zoos. In 2005, 17yearold Haley Hildebrand died from injuries she sustained while posing with a tiger at the lost creek Animal Sanctuary in kansas. The tiger lunged at her attacked her and got her by the back of the neck. Reporter zookeeper jack hanna says not everyone is equipped to tame the wild kingdom. I know what happened. Ive seen this after 45 years of working with animals, that when youre dealing with a wild animal, you have to be careful with what you do. Reporter the park says this tiger will not be put down. Although, the animal has been quarantined and will not be returning to the public exhibit anytime soon. Now, at the time of the incident, the victim, who has not been identified, was wearing a goose down and leather jacket. And its believed the jacket may have gotten stuck in that cage. Or the tiger was attracted to its smell. Even though the zoo blames the employee for what happened, the incident remains under investigation. Meanwhile, though, the Humane Society of the u. S. Called the zoo substandard. And says it has a history of animal attacks. Calling it, quote, guys, a ticking time bomb. The Humane Society is worked up about these roadside zoos. It was a pretty harsh press release they sent out about this. Okay, rob. Thank you. Lets get back to ginger in louisiana, with a look at the national forecast. Good morning, once again.
