Reporter 4 44 p. M. On saturday, kenyan officials call the afact an act of terrorism. The Al QaedalinkedExtremist Group al shabaab reportedly claiming retaliation. Overnight, the bbc spoke to an al shabaab military commander who says hes been in contact with the terrorists inside the mall. And that they are not backing down. There will be no negotiations. Reporter witnesses say the terrorists were on a mission to kill nonmuslims. Ordering shoppers to speak arabic or recite a verse from the koran to save their lives. They were trying to get other hostages but, quote, only very few remained. Saying it wit likely take time before theyre able to identify all of the bodies. George. Lets get more from nick handler, one of the americans who was in the mall with his family when the terrorists attacked. He joins us by phone. Take us back to that moment. You and your 2yearold were in the cafe and your wife was a floor below before you heard the explosion. We made a quick stop to pick up food at the mall and she and lynn say went upstairs to do shopping. A couple of moments before she left. We heard an explosion, followed by a couple gunshots. I was lucky enough to be next to the door of the cafe. I immediately jumped up and grabbed my daughter and ran across the mall away from the explosions. Its not good. You run across. You got your daughter julia with you. What happened next . I follow a few people out. A service exit of some kind towards the back of the mall. The wave of people pushed back towards the building, i think running away from shooting thats happening at the front. We got pushed back into the building and up a flight of stairs, then we ended up hiding out in an inventory room. Our daughter must have been terrified. I think when we were running away from the initial explosion and into hiding. She was definitely she definitely freaked out. I have to say once we got settled down and were waiting the situation out, she was incredibly brave. That could calm you down a little bit. But meanwhile your wife my wife and i were able to communicate on the phone. I knew she moved into a Movie Theater. Dark Movie Theater on the third floor and eventually out on to the roof and we were talking that whole time. I also knew when she had been finally evacuated by some heroic policeman who secured a way out for them. I was aware and she was aware i was inside and helping to communicate our location to people who might be able to help. Tell us the moment you were finally able to see each other again. After, i think about three hours is when we were finally rescued, and i ran down a driveway on the side of the mall and turned up the street. I knew exactly where she was waiting. We sort of ran towards each other and hugged. It was an incredibly emotional moment. I can only imagine. So happy youre all back together. Your family together this morning. Reporter there have been about 50 recruits according to the u. S. Officials from small towns and big cities across the country. More than half of them traced back to the twin cities of minneapolis and st. Paul. Reporter according to newly released court documents, the brothers allegedly told police they chose to set three fires so the crime would, quote, look like an accident. They say when bill tried to get out of his bedroom, joshua was holding the door closed. Thats what they told me. But i have a hard time believing that. The twins allegedly told investigators their father was quote difficult to live with and work for, which was a factor in why they wanted to kill him. Im probably not the easiest guy to live with. Practically, conspiracy to commit firstdegree murder, the possibility of 10 to 15 years behind bars for each of them. Thats why the father becomes so crucial in the equation. I dont want you to move forward with the case. The authorities will say, look, were sorry. We have to. A crime is committed. This is the state of washington versus these two men.
