It was the start of the workweek for thousands. Their day transformed into one of sheer chaos, as the shooter went on his rampage. So much of the city in lockdown on monday. Even the Washington Nationals baseball game canceled. And this morning, that all too familiar sight. The white house flag at halfstaff for the victims. 12 dead plus the gunman. Lets get to what weve learned overnight from jim avila in washington. Good morning, jim. Reporter good morning, george. Most of the 15,000 workers here at the massive navy yard have been asked to work from home today, as authorities work on the motive behind this terrible attack, perpetrated by one of the navys own contractors. This morning, the police are focusing their investigation on 34yearold aaron alexis, an i. T. Contractor, starting a job at the naval yard. Overnight, as police and fbi agents searched the brooklyn home of alexis parents, questioning them for four hours, authorities gave the allclear, allowing more than 1,000 workers stranded all day at the naval facility to go home. Saying earlier reports of a second and possibly third suspect appear unfounded. We do now feel comfortable that we have the single and sole person responsible. Reporter the fbi also explaining overnight how the former sailor could get inside the shipyard. He had clearance. He utilized a valid pass to gain entry to the navy yard. Reporter it was the beginning of a shooting spree that began at 8 15 in the morning. Police get the first call. Arriving on scene three minutes later. We have an active shooter. Reporter by 8 21, d. C. Metro police and internal Navy Security begin a series of multiple gun battles. We have an officer down, building 197 on the third floor. Reporter the shooter, wearing black and carrying a long gun uses catwalks on the upper floors in the atriumstyle building to shoot down on innocents eating breakfast in the first floor food court. The three shots, were done. Pow, pow, pow. A few seconds later, maybe three secs later, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow, like, four more shots. Reporter the gunman picking off a dozen victims. None of them in the military. All civilian or Navy Contractors suffering fatal gunshot wounds. Many didnt even see him. One of the victims, Standing Shoulder to shoulder with Navy Commander tim jirus. I saw him drop in front of me. He was shot in the head. Reporter and this morning, were learning about some of the 1 victims. Ages ranging from 46 to 73. Like 51yearold arthur daniels. The grandfather of nine was shot in the back as he tried to escape. Or kenneth proctor, the 46yearold who worked for the government for 22 years. It took nearly 11 hours for authorities to finally clear this huge facility. But frightened workers were hiding in nooks and crannies all over the building. S. W. A. T. Teams finding the last frightened worker hiding in a storage locker at 7 00 last night. Robin . Jim, thank you. This morning, were learning new details about the alleged shooter, aaron alexis. The 34yearold was a navy reservist. And then, an i. T. Contractor for the navy. Abcs Pierre Thomas is there in washington and has much more on him. Good morning, pierre. Reporter good morning, robin. New information continued to flow in overnight. Sources tell us the suspect recently bought a shotgun used in the attack in a virginia gun store. And theyre investigating whether he got two other weapons at the scene. Right now, theres no evidence of terrorism. And the fbi believes he acted alone. This is the man, aaron alexis, that the fbi suspects of committing mass murder. Alexis, 34, is a former navy man in the military from may 2007, to january 2011. Much of it served at a naval station in ft. Worth, texas. Alexis, seen here in candid photographs, recently worked as a civilian computer contractor. Officials say he had a security clearance that gave him access to work on sensitive Computer Systems at the navy yard. Mr. Alexis had legitimate access to the navy yard. Reporter police searched his rental card found at the navy yard. And went to a nearby residence inn where he had been staying. And they fanned out across the country to interview shocked friends and associates, urgently seeking a motive. Police say he murdered people at random, shooting whoever was in front of him, until he was shot and killed in a confrontation with police. Theres no question. He would have kept shooting. Reporter a look at the suspects past shows gun play. In 2010, alexis was arrested by ft. Worth police for shooting a gun into the ceiling of his apartment. And according to a 2004 Seattle Police report, alexis shot the tires of a construction workers car in an angerfueled rage. At the time, alexis father told police his son had helped rescue people on 9 11, and as a result, suffered from post Traumatic Stress disorder. He talked about it. He went to the v. A. And they would give him some medicine. Reporter friends in texas where he lived say he became a practicing buddhist. In recent years, he befriended the owner of this Thai Restaurant outside of ft. Worth. And volunteered as a waiter. He helped out a lot and became popular with the customers here. Reporter two of his friends told abc news in his free time, he spent hours playing militarystyle video games. Some friends described alexis as being frustrated about his pay as a consultant on a recent trip to japan and difficulties finding fulltime work. There was frustration there. He didnt feel as a vet, why he was getting treated like this. Reporter the fbi is trying to find out if the suspect got psychological treatment. But he did talk to you about his struggles with ptsd, correct . He did. He talked about the depression side of it. And he talked about sometimes he would get, you know, down. And if he he would say, if im looking down or i zone out, im not im okay. Im going through, you know, the postpartum. I can only imagine the shock for you yesterday when you heard he was the shooter. When i first heard about it, i was in denial. Like maybe someone stole his identification. Its got to be somebody else. It cant possibly be him. Its not him. A little after 4 00, i see a picture of him on the news. And it was a crippling experience. I didnt know how to respond or what to say. Its like my denial just became a reality. And it was overbearing. When was the last time you spoke to him . And what did you say . I spoke with him about a week ago. And he called, checking in, as usual. Hey, guys. Its me. Im in washington. I dont know how long im going to be here. Ill let you guys know. And just an everyday conversation, like just nothing that would remotely say this is something im about to do. No clue at all . We basically had a waterway through our house. Theres about 1,000 residents that are up in the various isolated areas in need of evacuation. Reporter rescuers airlifting at least 1,000 people out of isolated communities like pinewood springs. Its a small community. But its an important community. Weve lived up there for forever. And theyll fix our roads so that we can go back home. Reporter more than 11,000 people have been evacuated from their homes, including this couple, fortunate enough to be returning to their home, but now trudging there on foot. The only road in, undrivable. Ive never seen anything like this. Reporter overnight, the floodwaters hit sterling, the largest city in northeastern colorado. Now, its streets are flowing with water. And theres no working sewer system. Back in boulder the bike path or what used to be the bike path. Reporter a mounting list of communities now facing weeks or months of cleanup. But amidst it all, the kindness of strangers reigns. Youre here to bring people into my house. Reporter strangers . Strangers. Reporter what came over you . The stunning feat of engineering overnight. You see the costa concordia. The cruise ship that capsized a year and a half ago, affixed to a reef there. It is now, as you can see, upright for the first time off the italian coast. Lifted from its watery grave and giving us a new view of the immense damage. Taking 19 long hours, 7 longer than expected because they needed to use more pulling force, they were finally able to pull off this amazing feat. All of it captured on camera in a stunning timelapsed video. After a long day of pulling and rotating the vessel, maneuvering it so it slowly inches its way up and out of the water. Gravity then taking over into the early hours. Making it easier for the ship to move. Engineers were able to lift the vessel out of the mediterranean waters. [ cheers ] reporter and this is the moment it happened. Celebrations ringing out as the most complicated salvage operation in maritime history is now 80 complete. I think everyone was very pleased. Yeah, it was a good challenge. Its not over yet. But its at least its as we found it. Reporter you can see the side of the ship covered in slime and scum, where its been under water for the last 20 months and crushed like a building in an earthquake. Hauling this hulk of a ship more than twice the size of the titanic was an epic effort. The 952foot cruise liner is now resting and being supported by six specially built underwater steel platforms. But the project isnt over. They have to attach huge steel boxes to the starboard side so they can float it and tow it to a nearby port to dismantle it. Theyre hoping to do this by spring next year. Josh . Lama, thank you for that. Breaking news near atlanta, where a manhunt is under way right now for two men who allegedly abducted a 14yearold girl during a Home Invasion overnight. Investigators say the men broke into the home in georgia around 2 00 a. M. , demanding money and jewelry. When they didnt get any, police say they took this 14yearold here. She was last seen with the two, armed men who left in a gray dodge. We will have more details when we get them. If youre in the greater atlanta area, please keep an eye out. Government Health Officials are sounding the alarm about socalled superbugs, the ones resistant to antibiotics. They found that 2 million americans come down with infeks from drugresistant bacteria each year. And that massive fire that ripped through the iconic new jersey shore boardwalk last week is now being called an accident. One source says that it appears to have been electrical in nature. Were going to turn to the new details on the shocking Police Shooting in north carolina, where an unarmed man looking for help after his car crashed was gunned down by a police officer. This morning, we hear from the victims mother. And as Abcs Steve Osunsami reports, she is forgiving the officer who shot her son. Reporter Police Confirm that 24yearold Jonathan Ferrell was unarmed. Now, theyre revealing that the former College Athlete was shot by a Charlotte Police officer ten times. This is jonathans baby. One of his reporter his grieving mother, holding up her sons teddy bear, as she shares how much his death breaks her heart. Its just really hes gone too soon. Gone too soon. Reporter investigators say the former safety for florida a m had badly crashed his car when he went knocking on this door for help at 2 30 in the morning. The frightened woman inside called Charlotte Police. And according to their initial report, one of their officers deployed his taser at mr. Ferrell but it was unsuccessful. So far, police havent explained what that means. They do say that officer Randall Kerrick shot at the young black man a total of 12 times, and that the shooting was excessive. Kerrick is charged with voluntary manslaughter. He has not entered a plea. I can tell you as man of color, its frightening. Its late. Its suburbia. Charlotte. The one officer that shot was white. The victims family is hoping they will finally get justice. Abcs Neal Karlinsky has that story. Reporter in a seattle courtroom monday, a mother unflinchingly took on her daughters alleged murderer. The same man she once called family. But has pursued for years as a coldblooded killer. I just said, he murdered my daughter. I have cried my brains out every day for seven years. If he cant take being confronted by a 72yearold woman, well, im sorry. But hes not much of a man if he cant handle that. Reporter nicole pietz vanished from home in 2006. At the time, her husband, david pietz, seen here in the couples happy wedding video, was among those talking to reporters. Trying to focus on what we can do to be finding her so that you dont let your mind go to bad places. Reporter her body was later found in a wooded area, strangled. Police were interested in david as a suspect early on. They say he was unhappy with his marriage, frustrated with his job, and having affairs. But it would be six, long years before they would arrest him, claiming to have built a case on circumstantial evidence and dna. Defense attorneys call the case flimsy, without a single eyewitness to a crime. Its not based on any direct evidence. And its not going to show that david pietz took nicoles life. Reporter prosecutors say the case will take time to prove. Just as they say david was methodical in covering up the crime. Nicoles mother testified about her daughters funeral and something she says david told her. He put his arms around me and said, i didnt think youd take it so hard. Were going to bring in abcs chief Legal Affairs anchor, dan abrams. And explain why it took so long to bring it to trial. Well, obviously, they didnt think they had enough evidence up until recently. Two things have happened, with regard to new technology. With regard to cell phones and with regard to dna. Theyve been able to better pinpoint where a crucial phone call was made that Authorities Say is incriminating. And with regard to dna evidence, they say they were able to link him to her car in a way that they might not have been able to do previously. New technology has helped them confirm what were their suspicions. Theyve been suspicious of him since very early on in the investigation. So, what you said helps. But the length of time, does that affect the case, though, in any kind of way . Its not helpful. You dont want to wait six or seven years. Memories start to fade. People switch jobs. Evidence is lost. There have been a lot of cases where it does take some time. This is not an easy case. How strong do you think this case is . Yeah, this is they believe you have to put the puzzle together, to convict here. Its not a single piece of evidence. But of all the pieces of evidence, the one that struck me the most was the one that when her body was found, she was still wearing a dental retainer. Why is that so important . His account is that he sees her asleep at midnight. And thats the last time he sees her. Theoretically someone abducted her. And abducted her with a dental retainer. Its a crucial piece of evidence for prosecutors to say, it wasnt a stranger. It was him. Dan, thanks so much. Lets turn to the latest adventure for prince harry. Firefighters say an electrical problem started a fire in the laundry room of the home around 3 30. The fire then spread to two neighboring homes. The red cross is now helping the families. Its simply time to go home and let my mother put her hand on the situation. I think the amazing thing is, this woman, wilona, has so much love for her children, she has decided to go out on love and faith, and bring them home, even though home is not a good place right now. Its sort of turbulent. But home is also the place where the roots are and the place where we can fertilize this young man. And, yes. He needed a grandmas loving. He needed grandma. Tonya, weve seen films before, depicting this time in our countrys history. You decided to go with a different angle here. Explain that. We adapted the young adult novel, by Christopher Paul curtis. And whats so great about it its told through the eyes of the 12yearold boy. Thats what is unique about it. I dont think weve seen this story through the eyes of a child. And this family, as anika said, they travel from flint, michigan, to birmingham, alabama. Theyre outsiders in the world. They deal with segregation in a way they never experienced it before. You showed it in such a way. Ive seen films like this before. But it was different. Youre one of the executive producers. And one of the screen writers. What i appreciated, the humor. And as many times as you told me that at lunch. How could i forget that . She deserves all of the credit for it. She wrote an incredible script. It really comes to life. Everyone brings it to life. Thats whats so helpful, to have that those humorous moments come through. Well, we like to say, its a film that makes you laugh. It makes you cry. And you want to watch with your whole family. Its a family film. So, we hope that everybody gets together to watch it with their kids. And thats true. Im watching it. I see my family. I see so many different families. It is about family. It is all about family. And the love they have for each other. And theyre a working unit, which is something we dont often see when we talk about families now. A husband and a wife that communicate well together and work well together for a common goal with their children, which is needed. You lead a very good cast. Thank you.
