As we come on the air, the crisis with syria really heating up. Just moments ago, the government there promising to use all available means to defend itself from a u. S. Strike. Preparations for that strike are ramping up right now. This, of course, comes just hours after u. S. Officials called the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian Government last week, quote, cowardly, undeniable and a moral obscenity. This from secretary of state john kerry. Thats right. This morning. Syria is saying thats a lie. Lets get right to the region where Abcs Martha Raddatz is tracking all of this on the ground in amman, jordan. Good morning, martha. Reporter good morning, george and elizabeth. This region is bracing for a possible military attack on syria, which could come soon. This morning potential targets have been identified, allies consulted, and military commanders await only the green light to launch attacks. These images seen around the world have had a profound effect in washington. Secretary of state john kerry saying in no Uncertain Terms that what the assad regime has done will not go unpunished. Make no mistake, president obama believes there must be accountability for those who would use the worlds most heinous weapons against the worlds most vulnerable people. Reporter for kerry the attacks seemed personal. As a father, i cant get the image out of my head of a man who held up his dead child, wailing while chaos swirled around him. Reporter while the administration is convinced a chemical attack occurred, the u. N. Is proceeding with its investigation. Those inspectors who came under sniper fire donning bulletproof vests to interview survivors. While u. N. Authorization would be ideal, it is doubtful that will come. If the United States stands by and doesnt take very serious action, not just launching some cruise missiles, then, again, our credibility in the world is diminished even more, if theres any left. So, martha, as you said, this military strike could come soon. A tricky calculation by the Obama Administration. They want to strike hard enough to punish the assad regime, but they dont want to get pulled into a prolonged war. Reporter they do not, george, so this will be a limited strike, a limited objective to prevent syria from launching any further chemical attacks. You will probably see cruise missiles from the mediterranean sea, destroyers in the mediterranean sea, possibly longrange bombers. It will probably just last about two to three days. Of course, the white house keeps saying the president has not yet made a decision. There would be no direct hit, i cannot imagine, on chemical weapons because that would be very dangerous. Those weapons could disperse, but a very limited objective here, george and elizabeth. They do not want to get involved in syrias civil war. And, martha, weve seen consultations begin with congress, begin with our allies. The United Kingdom has drawn up contingency plans for a military strike, as well, but the next big action we expect to see from the u. S. Government, an Intelligence Report clearly pinning all of this on the Syrian Government. Reporter they will present an Intelligence Report, but you cant get much stronger than what john kerry said yesterday. They said there is undeniable evidence. So it is just a matter of time. All right, and just moments after secretary of state john kerry got finished addressing the nation about the crisis in syria, it already was impacting markets here. Stocks began to slide on monday as fears grew in the middle east that that region is on the brink. Abc news contributor betty liu is here to explain what this could mean for the u. S. Economy not just the u. S. Stock markets began to slide on monday but overnight foreign stock markets and futures. Youre absolutely right, elizabeth. Investors are jittery. You see that this morning. Stock markets around the world have been hit. The dow here is already down about 4 so far this month. Now, investors are saying, look, with an economy thats just recovering, this is the last thing we need. It may not be able to handle this shock that may be coming out of syria rippling on to our shores. Also, after secretary kerrys News Conference yesterday, crude Oil Prices Hit a fivemonth high. How is this going to impact oil and gas prices . Well, so far the tensions in the middle east, elizabeth, have not hit gas prices, but that could soon change. You see oil prices a little bit higher this morning. Now, if these tensions could boil over into other parts of the region, iran, iraq, oilproducing countries, that could have a dramatic impact on gas prices. So were going to watch that closely. And all of this happening, of course, as the forecast that the u. S. May hit its debt limit in october, a month earlier than expected. Some inside the administration warning of a possible financial crisis as a result . Well, this is deja vu all over again. There was news out, as you mentioned, just in that investors are digesting that we may be maxing out our credit limit six weeks from now. That could be another piece of uncertainty that investors have to deal with. Could be a rocky ride ahead this fall. Thats right. Betty liu, thanks so much. Guys, thanks. Were going to turn to the massive california wildfire threatening Yosemite National park and new concerns this morning about the heavy smoke and dangers for the San Francisco water supply. Abcs Neal Karlinsky reports from the fire line right now. Good morning, neal. Reporter george, good morning. If there is one word to describe this fire, it is stubborn, and theres something else, you can smell it in the air, and we can feel it in our lungs. It is all this smoke, making life miserable for everyone here. An allout war against this fire has so far kept communities largely safe from these massive flames, but those same people have been drenched in unhealthy smoke for a week now. The first few days of school canceled, what some are calling smoke days. The secretary actually called us and told us no school until at least wednesday. I think we were glad because our house is so smoky, they cant stay in it. Good job reporter sisters riley and lucy hessler havent just been kept home but indoors. My throat it hurts my throat really bad when i breathe. It hurts my eyes. Reporter nasa is flying a Research Plane over the fires to collect air samples. A smoke plume so huge, it can be seen from space. There is now fear that what can be seen in the air may also be sneaking into the water. Public utility workers in San Francisco are monitoring the citys water supply around the clock, worried it will be polluted by ash because most of San Franciscos water comes from this reservoir near the fire. So far, they say, instruments which detect particles in the water have not found anything unsafe and that the water supply will be switched to nearby reservoirs if it gets bad enough. Firefighters are finally turning optimistic. The latest numbers that chaim out overnight show that is the fire is now 20 contained. That is huge progress over just the last 48 hours. George . We begin with one of the nations largest ever crackdowns on dogfighting. Nearly 400 pit bull terriers have been rescued in raids across alabama and georgia, many of them just puppies. Agents arrested 12 people accused of sponsoring and promoting the dogfights. And seized 500,000 in cash from alleged gambling. And they expect to make even more arrests. And a colorado judge has returned to work after being forced into hiding fearing for his life because a white supremacist gang allegedly ordered a hit on him. This judge, who asked us not to show his picture, is believed to be the target of that socalled 211 crew. Authorities say the gang is trying to get even excuse me for the judges role investigating the murder of colorados prison chief, tom clements back in march. They feel that even more investigators may be at risk. Sorry for the breathing there. Thats okay. Ive had it before. I think im okay. Just let me get a second there. And we do have new trouble for jcpenney. Its stock is dropping overnight after word that a Key Hedge Fund manager, the companys largest investor, is selling his shares. Now, the company has struggled. The stock is down 60 from last year. And some news that we do like to report. After months in a philadelphia hospital, double Lung Transplant recipient Sarah Murnaghan heading home today. This is fabulous news. Remember her, the 10yearold, sarahs case, she made headlines when her parents challenged the National Transplant rules in court. She won. Well, sarah is now focusing on getting stronger so she wont need her breathing tube any longer. That is fabulous news. And a dominating performance finally at the u. S. Open has vaulted the william sisters back into the tennis Power Rankings together again. How about this . Venus williams, ranked 60th and plagued by a recent back injury, hit 120 miles per hour. Wow. Thats really fast in her serve, in a lopsided win over tenthranked kirsten flipkens. Then it was her sister, serena, defending her title with force. She lost only one game, 60, 61, to francesca schiavone. Needing only about an hour to advance. You guys, get this, it was so bad, schiavone needed a hug. She sought one out from the ball boy. Ah. Were going to turn now to George Zimmerman, who is back in the headlines after being acquitted in the murder of trayvon martin. This morning his attorneys tell abc news that they want the state of florida to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars of his legal bills. Abcs matt gutman is in florida now with the very latest on this story. Good morning to you, matt. Reporter good morning, elizabeth. And George Zimmerman may be entitled to it. Florida law allows acquitted defendants to recoup a lot of their legal expenses, everything but the priciest part, that, of course, is the lawyers fees. His defense team tells me he may ask for up to 300,000. It was a trial that captivated the nation. George zimmerman, not guilty. Reporter but an acquittal that could now cost the state of florida as much as 300,000. For more than a year, George Zimmerman employed a tenperson legal team as he defended himself against the charge of seconddegree murder in the shooting of 17yearold trayvon martin. Those lawyers conducted scores of depositions, flew in experts, even ordered up this 3d animation. Now, they tell abc news zimmerman will ask the state to pay those expenses. State law requires the reimbursement of all but the most expensive part of his defense, lawyers fees, which are estimated at well over a million dollars. Zimmerman had largely been living off of donations, solicited on his website, which have mostly dried up. The day after the trial, his attorney told abc news zimmerman was short on cash. Can he work . What is his future like . I dont think he can work. I dont think that someone can hire him to say, sit in my office or sit in my store and do this with the fanfare thats going to come at lesat in the next year or two. Reporter zimmerman had kept a low profile after the trial until he made headlines, captured on this Police Dash Cam video after being stopped for speeding in texas. The first thing the former watchman tells the officer is that he has a gun in his glove box. Just take it easy. Go ahead and jut your glove compartment and dont touch your firearm, okay . Reporter now zimmerman may find himself back in the same florida courthouse where he was tried. His wife, shelley zimmerman, faces a single charge of perjury for allegedly lying to the court about the amount of donations the couple received. So while zimmerman is a free man, his wife shelly faces up to five years in prison if shes convicted. She has a Court Hearing tomorrow. No word on whether the zimmermans will attend. Now, zimmermans attorneys tell me that it could be at least six weeks before he sees any of that money from the state. George . Okay, matt, thanks very much. Were going to turn now to those shocking allegations about one of the most famous tennis matches in history. They called it the battle of the sexes, pitting the retired pro bobby riggs against womens champ Billie Jean King. Kings win gave a big boost to feminism 40 years ago, but a new report from espn says the match was rigged. Abcs gio benitez with the details. Good morning, gio. This is really something. It really is, isnt it, george . Good morning. Its the espn investigation everyones talking about alleging that bobby riggs intentionally threw the match in order to settle gambling debts with the mob. It was more than a showdown. It was a spectacle. Live from the astrodome in houston, texas, the tennis battle of the sexes. Billie jean king versus bobby riggs. Reporter millions watched as 55yearold retired tennis star bobby riggs entered the astrodome in september of 1973. Im howard cosell. Were delighted to be able to bring you this very, very quaint, unique event. Reporter riggs planned to crush the young female wimbledon champ, Billie Jean King. And its been a night i think that was not expected by most. Reporter but when the dust settled the game is over. Reporter king had won proving, yes, a woman could beat a man on the tennis court. But now in an espn outside the lines exclusive, this man, hal shaw, says it was all a fix, that riggs owed the more more than 100 grand and worked with them to throw the match. Shaw was an assistant golf pro at a florida country club. He says months before the match, he overheard two infamous mobsters. They brought up the name of bobby riggs, and riggs had assured him that he would go in the tank, and hell make it look and appear that hes trying his best, but Billie Jean King is just overwhelming him. Reporter espns don van ngata interviewed him. I looked in his eyes. I heard him tell the story multiple times. The details were always the same. I was not going to move forward with this story unless i believed him to be someone who was absolutely credible. Reporter in an interview with espn, king disputes that account. I would bet my life that bobby never had that discussion with him. Well, one of the things that we learned bobby doesnt get involved with mobsters. Reporter not true said riggs son. Did he know mafia guys . Absolutely. Is it possible that he talked to him about doing it . Possible. Reporter and this morning king says the claim is just ridiculous, but if the story is true, riggs took his secret to the grave when he died in 1995. George . Wow. Surprising that his son says its possible. I know. I want to believe it wasnt true. I know. I swear. You never know. No, no, its not. Yes. All right. Moving on to a mystery on tap this morning. Who is leaving very generous tips at several restaurants and pubs around utah . Were talking very generous tips as in thousands of dollars. It is a brewing whodunit thats got a lot of people curious. Theres a mystery brewing in ogden, utah. It started here at bruwskis bar and grill where someone left a 5,000 tip on a 214 tab friday. The next night, the bit tipper showing up at a bar called alleged trying to pay his tab and leave a monster tip on the bars tableside ipad. He called over to the bartender. Hes like, hey, this thing is not letting me leave a good tip. He said, what do you mean . I want to tip 1,000. And the bartender said, let me get my manager. Reporter a tip so large the manager was certain it was a mistake. I really wanted to stress the fact that he did, indeed, want to leave this tip, and he did. He was quite adamant about it. He was very polite. Reporter the waitress cried tears of joy. Both bars know the tippers identity but are keeping it a secret. And it turns out its more than just a random act of kindness. The tipper had also tipped 1,000 to a lady running a beer cart at a golf course. That type of thing. Reporter and back in may, another mystery diner left 1,000 for his waitress after she mentioned that shed always dreamed of seeing italy. Even superstar taylor swift got generous recently leaving 500 after dining on chicken parm at ralphs Italian Restaurant in philadelphia. But back in utah rumors continue to swirl about that 2,000 tipper. Even british billionaire richard branson, who was reportedly in the area, has been mentioned as the possible patron who left everyone saying cheers. They were all just glowing and really excited, and everyone was a little bit kind of bewildered and just laughing like couldnt believe it. It was definitely a positive thing. This is getting some feed over the next couple of days from what was that Tropical Storm fernand, if you will, and pulls up the moisture and go with more rain from phoenix to boise to jackson and grand junction, locally about an inch of rain here. We continue with developing news out of danville where police are investigating a car crash that left one teenager dead and two others injured. It happened on el captain near claridge avenue before 9 00 last night when their car slammed into a tree. One passenger died at the hospital. The driver and other passenger are in the hospital listed in stable condition this morning. One has a broken leg, the other broken ribs. Investigators do not think that drugs or alcohol were involved, but they are looking into whether speed was factor in the deadly crash. A check of the commute with leyla gulen. The reality star husband of Khloe Kardashian is reportedly holed up in a hotel room battling a drug problem, leading many to wonder if hes been leading a double life now for a few years. Abcs john muller has the story. Reporter on the court lamar odom is a 610 basketball pro, a twotime nba champion. Off the court hes a star of reality tv. Yeah. Reporter his marriage to Khloe Kardashian on display for millions on their hit show keeping up with the kardashians. But this morning, espn is reporting odom is in a hotel room, dealing with an alleged drug addiction. This is something that khloe has been keeping a secret from her family, and she recently came clean, and theyre really trying to help lamar. Reporter several news outlets including tmz and people suggest odom has been leading a double life, allegedly hiding a drug problem for two years, even while playing in the nba. Odom has also been dogged by seemingly daily tabloid headlines accusing him of cheating on kardashian. This morning, tmz reports kardashian threw the 33yearold nba star out of their house after he rejected an attempt at intervention. Khloe was recently snapped at the gym not wearing her wedding ring, and that further fueled rumors that the two were splitting. Reporter late monday odoms agent responded to reports that the star had gone missing telling espn lamar is not missing. His wife knows exactly where he is. He declined to address use of drug use. The l. A. Clippers also declined comment. Its not the first time odom has been involved in a drug controversy. In 2001, he was suspended by the nba for using marijuana. The Parents Television council issued a complaint, saying the network marketed adultsonly material and manipulated parents to think the content was safe. For their children. Mtv branded the show with a tv14 rating, but the council says, mtv continues to sexually exploit young women by promoting acts that incorporate twerking in a nudecolored bikini. How is this image of former child star miley cyrus appropriate for 14yearolds . Ironically, mileys father, billy ray cyrus, sits on the councils advisory board. To protect the under 18s and those with weak hearts, we cant show you half of it. People were just very surprised, and it pushed a new boundary coming from her. You know, when you look at all the huge talent that was there, george, lady gaga and an nsync reunion, one direction, who are we talking about . Were talking about miley cyrus. She didnt won a vma award but she won the vmas. So she got what she wanted . I do think she did. She got exactly what she wanted. This wasnt a slip. This was a moment that was well rehearsed and well planned and well talked about for the last two days. And its been part of the strategy shes had for the better part of two years. Abe mean who are than two years now trying to shed that whole Hannah Montana image. You know, child actors do that. We saw Daniel Radcliffe go on broadway and literally get naked in equus. They have to make a statement and say, im not that kid you thought i was anymore, and theres a business decision behind it. What you want to do is grow up with your fans, grow up with your audience, and say, hey, im relevant, and while it was shocking to a lot of people, it was certainly shocking to parents, its not shocking to 20yearolds and her peers, quite frankly. And shes not going to lose fans over this . No, shes going to gain fans. This was an attempt to reinforce, this is the new miley. You keep buying my music, you keep going to my concerts, im growing up with you. But what about parents . You know, i was lucky i was there, and my kids were distracted by Everything Else going in the arena, i didnt have to answer questions about it. You couldnt do that if you were watching at home. No, you couldnt at all, and this is a cautionary tale for parents. And traditionally music awards have been a little raunchier. Weve seen a lot of halfdressed people, but it cant be surprising. Weve seen lady gaga run around half naked. Weve seen Robin Thickes video all over the internet. So it cant be surprising, and i would advise parents either to tape it and watch it. And if they feel its appropriate for kids, fine. If not, i respect that decision. But they have to take this as a moment to learn and say, hmm, this may not be right for my family. Someone had suggested taking some photos in the water and so i was carrying jesse back to get his legs, and the photographer was like, well get a couple of shots of you guys together. Reporter the photographer posted the picture to her Facebook Page where it went wildly viral. Racking up thousands of likes, hundreds of shares and countless comments. All in all, the couples strength and resilience in the face of adversity. The photo really says it all. I actually look at it very much as a as a symbol pretty much for our just whole relationship in general. I mean, shes physically carrying me. But, man, theres times when shes carrying me emotionally. Its a perfect representation of who kelly is. I thank them both for sharing their story with us and with you. Loved it. It turns out their moms knew each other. They were in a Bible Study Group together. And they may have had a Little Something to do with setting them up. But congratulations.
