the grandmother frantically called police. >> 911, what is your emergency? >> my son-in-law just kidnapped my two grandchildren. they're under the state custody. he's not supposed to be near them. he tied me up. >> reporter: hours later surveillance cameras captured the couple preparing the boat called "the salty paw." this photo shows them taking off to atlanta with the boys on board allegedly, but cuba authorities found them and abc news was there as a cuban official took the mother off the boat tuesday afternoon. and amazingly, this all became national news when an american reporter in cuba spotted that boat. spotted the father and said to him, hey, are you josh and the guy said, yeah. elizabeth? >> oh, boy, all right, thank you very much, gio. for more we on this, bring in "gma's" legal analyst dan abrams. the united states does not have an extradition treaty with cuba. pretty incredible it was resolved between the two governments so quickly. >> remember, none of the alleged kidnappers here have any connections to cuba which would have changed this fundamentally. i think a lot of people say, well, there's no treaty. why would they have cooperated? why not. meaning in the sense there's no reason really that the cubans would want them in the country. there's this sense, oh, there are all these cuban fugitives there, true, there have been some over the years, primarily in the '60s and '70s, but tended to be much more politicized and have a connection to cuba in some way, shape or form. >> like in the elian gonzalez case, both sides, they're recognizing the rights to be returned to their parents. what charges will the parents face? >> elian gonzalez would be difference between the connection to cuba and here they're facing serious kidnapping, a burglary charge, child endangerment. false imprisonment. this is serious stuff and not minor charges. >> and the kids have been returned to the grandparents. all right, dan abrams. >> who do have custody. >> who do you have legal custody. great, thank you. >> thanks, guys. now to the breakthrough on gun control. one day after those emotional visits to congress from newtown families, key senators have reached a bipartisan deal to expand background checks for all commercial sales and abc's jon karl has more. this is what the families he brought back on air force one were hoping for. >> reporter: it's not everything they were looking for, george, but it's a big breakthrough and would expand background checks to all sales, at gun shows and over the internet. it's a big deal, and it comes from a compromise worked out between two senators with "a" ratings from the nra, pat toomey the republican and joe manchin, the democrat. it is a big significant breakthrough. it gets you a long way there. >> jon, on another front, remember that congressman anthony weiner forced to resign two years ago after he posted twitter pictures in his underwear. he's back in "the new york times" this morning talking about a possible run for mayor of new york city. >> reporter: yeah, i don't think i'll forget that interview when he looked at that photograph and told me it wasn't him. but, yes, he tells "the new york times" he is considering a run for mayor. he still has more than $4 million in his campaign war chest. at the time of that scandal, he was the favorite to be the next mayor of new york, so it looks like he may well give it a try. >> both he and his wife who worked for secretary of state clinton incredibly revealing in that interview this morning. thanks very much. george, we'll turn to the latest on that stabbing rampage at lone star college near houston, texas. the attacker wounded 14 people, 2 of them critically before he was tackled by fellow students. abc's alex perez joins us with more on that story. good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, elizabeth. dylan quick has yet to make an appearance in court still being evaluated. now, authorities said that he not only planned out the attack, but fantasized about stabbing people for years. this cell phone video captures the frightening moments as police detained 20-year-old dylan quick after he allegedly stabbed 14 people with a knife. >> as soon as i put him on the ground i asked him like, why, why, why did you stab these people? >> reporter: but students had no idea he was deaf. mada along with others tackled, quick, subduing him until others arrived. >> we knocked his hearing aid out so he couldn't hear us screaming at him. i was so enraged. >> reporter: the chaos began after 11:00 a.m. tuesday morning, that's when police say that quick went on a bloody rampage. randomly stabbing students most in the neck and head here on the lone star community college campus just outside houston. it happened so quickly michele alvarez didn't even realize she had been stabbed. >> the adrenaline, i didn't feel the cut but then i heard people screaming behind me when he was running so when i heard people behind me, i just -- i was like, no, i have to run into a room and get safety. >> suspect is going to be a male running around loose stabbing people, white male, black hat with a black and white shirt. >> reporter: the school quickly blasted out an emergency alert to students, but by that point confusion had spread across campus. >> i was in the middle of math class and we didn't really know what was going on. i looked out the window and i saw somebody holding their neck. >> reporter: quick was home-schooled part of his life but these images from the school's blog shows he has long been associated with the college. attending classes here since he was 12 to help him learn to socialize with others. michael telfin enrolled in a drama class with him witnessed the brutal attacks. >> he had a sinister look on his face, like a smile and satisfaction grin after doing it. >> reporter: now, some good news. an update from the hospital, they all of the victims have been upgraded to good condition, dylan quick faces three kind of aggravated assaults. police say at this point, they still don't know what his motive may have been. elizabeth? >> alex, thank you so much for that report. to josh with the other top stories. we turn attention to the korean peninsula. word that south korea raised its alert level to one step below all-out war and this just as we get word that north korea has reportedly completed preparations for a missile launch. abc's bob woodruff is in seoul right now with the latest. good morning to you, bob. >> reporter: good morning, josh. what we do now know from surveillance is that north korea has positioned two midrange missiles called the musudan along the east coast. and one is prepared to launch. no one can predict when or if this will happen, where it will go, just straight into the sea or over the top of japan. the missile's range is up to 2400 miles so it could reach as far as guam. north korea has also warned us, journalists and foreigners, to evacuate from south korea, calling us american imperialists with south koreans as our puppets. and all those people in seoul have remained very calm this week, some told us today, josh, they are getting a little more concerned. >> understandable, bob. we'll have updates on abc news throughout the day. also, this morning we're hearing the dramatic 911 call made by a california couple tied up by a fugitive ex-police officer. christopher dorner was on the run in february, after killing four people, he took karen and jim reynolds hostage and then fled in their suv. while still tied up, a frantic karen called 911, not realizing deputies were nearby on dorner's trail. >> when did he tie you up? >> well, right before leaving. he tied us up, put pillowcases over our head. >> okay, so this all happened today? >> yes, yes, we're still tied up! >> can you step -- can you scream out for the deputies, please? [ yells for help ] >> karen and jim reynolds were not hurt. dorner later died in a shootout with police. for the first time texting is being blamed for the crash of a commercial flight. investigators say the pilot of a medical helicopter that went down in missouri in 2011 was so busy texting he didn't notice there was not enough gas for the flight. he and three other people were killed. and a heart-wrenching ordeal for one girl. she fell into a 55-foot-dip hole in a construction site in china. it was about a foot wide. rescuers sent down a red oxygen tube, dropped down a rope with a loop tied at one head and with the girl's mother shouting "hold on tight," the men gently lifted her up to safety. thankfully she was not seriously hurt. and finally, the record is now tied. the lady huskies of uconn won an eighth national title and dominated louisville, 93-60. the biggest rout ever, in fact, in a women's title game, uconn now tied with tennessee, of course, led by pat summitt and the lady vols for the most national titles. afterward uconn coach geno auriemma called summitt the greatest women's basketball coach who's ever lived. >> that's another dynasty. >> now to that startling secret tape planning how mitch mcconnell was planning to go after ashley judd. he is calling it a dirty trick asking the fbi to investigate where it came from and abc's jim avila has more. >> reporter: it's become a matter for the fbi. the feds responding to a request from senator mcconnell to investigate how his private and politically embarrassing strategy session became so public. exposing plans for a cutthroat attack on a hollywood opponents. >> i can never anticipate what is going to push me over the edge. >> reporter: this is one of the moments the senate's top republican was apparently hoping to use to crush potential political opponent ashley judd. >> she's emotionally unbalanced. >> reporter: secret recordings just published by "mother jones" magazine exposed a private strategy session when it looked like actress and kentucky native, ashley judd, might actually run against the powerful red state senator. >> ashley. >> this is the whac-a-mole. when anybody sticks their head out, do them out. >> reporter: it revealed potential plans for a personal attack against the movie star, by using her own beliefs and words against her. >> her own grandmother says she's a hollywood liberal. >> she's an out of touch hollywood liberal. >> reporter: staffers zeroing in on passages in her book, revealing a lifelong struggle with depression. >> hospitalized for 42 days and had a breakdown in the '90s. >> reporter: and laughter can be heard as they discussed using this 2011 interview with judd as painting her as unbalanced. >> i freak out in airports. the last time i came home from a trip, i absolutely flipped out when i saw pink fuzzy socks on a rack. >> reporter: even her religious beliefs, shown here in this youtube video, a bit unorthodox for kentucky theorized mcconnell's aide. >> i enjoy native fake practices and have a very nature-based god concept and i like to think i'm like st. francis in that way, brother donkey, sister bird. >> brother, that's my favorite line so far. absolute favorite line so far. >> reporter: is it fair game for you to question someone's mental health or their religious sensibilities in a strategy session like that? >> "mother jones" also had that one about mitt romney too, that 47%. do we have any idea at all how this tape might have been made? >> reporter: it's difficult to tell. this is a small group. just his strategists in that one room, so it's possible that one of them leaked it. maybe they were angry, didn't get paid, something like that. it's also possible there was a bug in the room. that's at least what the mcconnell people say but no evidence of that yet. >> to be continued. now to that elaborate hoax that was targeting televangelist joes osteen. a fake website saying the famous pastor had given up the christian faith went viral. osteen came out to deny and this morning, the hoaxster is coming out to say why he did it. >> reporter: the idea that televangelist joel osteen was giving up his ministry made headlines around the world. >> all is well. i still have my faith. nothing is changed. >> reporter: but the perpetrator of that hoax was a mystery until now. >> my name is justin tribble, i'm from the minnesota, st. paul area. >> how do we know you're justin? how do you know it's not a hoax? >> you do. you don't. >> reporter: we were skeptical. but we asked her to show us his driver's license, apparently legit and his connection to the story he shared other items, the godaddy receipt from registering the phony domain name. assuming you did it, why did you do it? >> i said she was -- >> reporter: another day of verbal combat between the feisty prosecutor and the defense psychotherapist who claims jodi arias was a victim of domestic violence at the hands of her ex-boyfriend, travis alexander. >> you didn't talk to mr. sandri, dmr. sandr mr. alexander, did you no. >> no, i did not. >> only person you talked to was the defendant? correct. >> reporter: she could face the death penalty if she's convicted of repeatedly shooting and stabbing him in 2008. the 32-year-old admits to killing the mormon businessman but says it was self-defense. the prosecutor said she invented the violence and even arias' own father knows she's a liar as he said in this interrogation tape after his daughter was arrested. >> she's never been honest with us since then and she was, um, 14 then. >> reporter: the judge allowed questions about it. >> don't you think that his view of her truthfulness has a much better basis than yours? >> he has a much longer history with her. >> reporter: the prosecutor's strategy of portraying the expert as gullible worked with arias' last witness and shredded the credibility of dr. samuels who diagnosed her with ptsd. but a male prosecutor verbally attacking a female witness who spent her life helping domestic violence victims is risky business as martinez found out. >> if you were in my group i would ask you to take a time-out, mr. martz. >> reporter: this witness on the stand for a solid week. she will be back there this morning and later this week, we expect she will finally get to those questions from the jury and, elizabeth, we talked about this before, so fascinating to watch these jurors scribbling on pieces of paper as she testifying then passing them and putting them in the basket. she has a whole pile of them waiting for her. >> i was in the court last week. they are paying very close attention, those jurors. >> reporter: they are. >> should be interesting. thanks so much. now we turn to that new craze for thrill-seekers called, get this, extreme kidnapping that gives adrenaline junkies, the experience of being abducted without the actual danger but police a lot of these fake crimes cross the line and abc's john muller has the story. we have's all been sort of going, what? >> i just was traveling a lot, working a lot. i wasn't looking after myself. i was eating, you know, a lot of cheese and wine, french fries. >> with mario batali. >> with mario batali, and, you know, when you have young children and working, you never rest, you know what i mean, you're racing to get home and so i just kind of -- my body went kaput a little bit and so my doctor said you need to clean up your diet and change all this blood work, and it really worked. >> what did you have to eliminate and for how long? >> this isn't indicative of the book because the book -- >> we have turkey chili. >> yes. i had to eliminate, you know, corn, soy, dairy, wheat, just for three weeks, alcohol, coffee. >> wow. >> but, you know, i ended up feeling so amazing. i lost weight and i had so much energy that i thought, you know, i would love to make a book that is not as restrictive as that but is a little bit healthier and really good comfort food so you don't feel like you're cutting anything out but that makes you feel better, lose weight and have more energy so that's how the book organically started. >> so the book is called "it's all good," and you yourself don't eat red meat. >> i don't, no. >> what else do you not eat or drink? >> pretty much i eat and drink everything else. >> it all came back in. >> you know, it's about -- i try to eat pretty healthily. my son has eczema, and he's allergic to gluten. so this book is gluten-free, but i did it in a way that you can't tell. all homey meatballs and burgers and stuff like that. >> so when people were getting all worried, gwyneth paltrow is giving her kid some weird diet and can't anything like grilled cheese sandwiches or -- >> that's all they eat, macaroni and cheese. people get things very wrong and don't sort of open the book and actually see what is what. >> are these recipes easy -- >> very. >> one criticism i read that it would take $80 a day to make some of the food. >> this is insane. this meal is here $2 a person. i don't know where they're getting -- i say i like honey, raw honey, and the jar is $25 but it lasts for two years. they were being sensationalist. there are a lot of inches of column people need to fill so a lot of times they try to get attention by saying things that aren't true, unfortunately. >> you don't have to buy the most expensive you happen to love. plenty of cheaper options. >> absolutely, absolutely. that's what i always say, chicken, i like to use organic chicken, but it's more expensive. you don't have to. >> great, so first we have chicken and white bean chili. >> i like to make it on a sunday when everybody is kind of playing and busy. i like to have something in the fridge that is a good after-school snack, and this is easy, very little fat, lots of protein. >> basically what i do, put in some olive oil in the pan, and then i like to toast my spices just to kind of -- >> bring out the flavor. >> get them fragrant. >> you've got garlic, here, salt, pepper. >> and paprika basically and once it starts to smell fragrant, you can smell all those beautiful flavors coming out. >> okay. >> then you make the sofrito which is onions, garlic and pepper, and so you let that cook for about ten minutes. you don't want it to brown but you want it to get sweet and caramelized. >> which looks like that. that was left on too long. >> it worked wednesday morning too. >> oh, my god. >> just my new bestie. >> we're best friends. >> so then you throw in tomatoes. i like to cook them down for -- >> what else we got? >> about 25 minutes and it really brings the sweetness out and add the chicken. now basically i bake this in the oven for 25 minutes on the bone with salt and pepper. >> that's it? >> that's it. >> when it cools, you rip it up and add your white beans and -- >> lovely salad with mango and avocado. >> this is a really easy salad. it feels really luxurious. mango -- balsamic. >> wow. >> and finally at the end candy bars are okay. >> yes, this is a woman who knows how to eat. so these healthy candy bars, of course, there's real chocolate in them. i enlisted a really healthy baker friend of mine who is amazing with sweets to make them. they're very healthy and very good. >> how did the two of you hook up in the airport lounge? >> yeah. >> what do you do to stay in shape? do you work out? >> i do. i work out when i am not like totally exhausted. but mentally like i do like i said meditation and a talk a lot to the people around me, and i don't hold anything in. >> it's quite remarkable you're also writing these songs. very heart-felt. is that a great release for you to put the pen to paper?
