Investigators want to know why this small plane suddenly fell from the sky, slamming into the side of this home just outside seattle. Miraculously missing teenager tallon korn and a friend inside only feet away. I was sitting in my house, and i hear a loud bang, and im like, thunder. I dont know why i was thinking thunder, and i look outside and i look down and theres the wing right down below the window and i was right there too. I didnt realize how close it was to hitting to me. Reporter the pilot identified by abc affiliate komotv as 45yearold jay uusitalo was killed. His teenager nephew, also on board, survived, air lifted to the hospital with severe injuries. I didnt see anything but it sounded weird. It sounded it was loud. Reporter the fourseat plane crashed through the garage door. But korn and his friend playing video games in a room just above the garage escaped unharmed. I was, you know, kind of in a rush. I told my friend, you know, call 911. I wanted to see if i could see anything. And you cant see anything. The garage was closed. Reporter before impact witnesses say the planes engine was sputtering, the propeller had stopped. The ntsb and faa are now investigating. I feel very lucky because if that if it hadnt hit where it did and hit like ten feet up i would have been done. Reporter a deadly crash so close to being much worse. Well, were going to turn now to weather, and after battering the west, another brutal storm is now heading into the midwest with almost a dozen states in its path. Meteorologist ginger zee is here with the details. Good morning, ginger. Good morning, bianna. Good morning, everybody. We want to start with denver. They had any where from 5 to 7 inch us and look at some of the totals in other areas, 16 inches. Parts of minnesota even picking up around 5 and now it all moves to the north and east. But ill show you pics from denver. And what it looked like here. 600 flights were canceled. Some of them smaller planes but either way it was definitely disruptive, and then, of course, this went to minnesota and thats where youll see pictures from right there. So its not just in colorado but, of course, areas to the north and east, and this is how the low is going to move. Watch with me here as it goes up into parts of wisconsin, and, of course, iowa, i think des moines going to get hit then wausau, wisconsin, right in there too. How much snow are we talking . 4 to 6 inches. If youre north and east of des moines, you could be in the 8 plus area. Wausau up to marquette, those are the spots that get the snow today and in the front end of this storm, it would be rain. Some of the heaviest rain happening where they had some snow and there will be flooding issues, flood watches there. Ill have much more coming up in your nations weather. For now back to bianna. All right, ginger, thank you. Well turn to a Daring Mission to save a racing crew on a sailboat ripped apart by crashing waves. The coast guard launched a dramatic rescue effort by air after the six sailors on board sent out a mayday call. Abcs gio benitez is here with the details. Gio. Reporter good morning, bianna. The boat and its crew were part of a popular overnight sailboat race, but as youre about to see, what what started as fun ended in tragedy. Youre looking at a sailboat wrecked on the beach of an island off the Southern California coast. With the crew members stranded on that island, the coast guard moved in for a dramatic rescue. It was quite dark. Seas were anywhere from 6 to 8 feet. Sometimes as high as 10 to 12. Reporter the rescuers came shortly after this boat, christened uncontrollable urge, lost control friday night while competing in a sailboat race. All six crew members were pulled into the helicopter from the islands beach, but 36yearold father and husband, craig thomas williams, had already died. Williams, a member of the silver gate yacht club, was an avid sailor seen here chatting with friends on a boat in november. They were not able to maintain control. It was just too windy, and the boat was just moving and rolling too violently. Reporter before the race, the captain of the sailboat, james gilmore, tweeted this, gonna see what this boat can do and first race on new urge. To have one of our top racers go out, have it end in tragedy, the loss of life, the trauma to the entire crew. Reporter the uncontrollable urge was 1 of 40 vessels in this years race fighting to make their way along the 139 nautical mile course from long beach to san diego. The mayday came from the san clemente island. This was an excellently prepared boat. The fact we didnt lose six was testament to the fact they had Safety Equipment on board, that they followed the procedures. Could have been a much worse scenario. Reporter and weve just learned another sailboat in the same race issued a mayday call just hours later. That boat lost steering, but the coast guard was able to tow it safely back to shore. Inside the vatican there are secret discussions going on, coalitions being formed and a lot of praying too as cardinals from all over the world get ready to lock themselves inside the Sistine Chapel for the ancient ritual known as the conclave. By this time next week we could know the name of the new pope. Could it be an american . David wright is once again in rome for us. This morning, david, good morning. Reporter good morning, dan. The pope is obviously the worldwide leader of catholicism and the cardinals who will elect him come from nearly 50 Different Countries but at least symbolically this is a local election. Among the popes other titles, hes the bishop of rome elected by the roman clergy. Rome has more churches than any other city, enough so that every cardinal has a roman church assigned to him where hes technically the pastor. Today, the princes of the church fanned out becoming parish priests again ahead of the conclave. On tuesday, theyll shut the doors of the Sistine Chapel for the solemn process of choosing the next bishop of rome. I think youll get going from what you hear. I think it depends which cardinal you talk to. I think theres a mix. Reporter greg burke, the vaticans senior media adviser, says be prepared, this may not be a short conclave. I dont think theyre in any huge hurry. Its obviously a monumental decision they have to make. Reporter indeed, there are reports of deep divisions in the ranks. The two factions supposedly are the roman party and the reform party. Reporter on one side the roman political machine, eager to preserve their feifdoms and they reportedly drafted a brazilian cardinal, cardinal odilo scherer. Scherer is close to the roman curia. Reporter on the other side, the reformers, led by the americans who reportedly want a sheriff to clean up after the scandals, possibly even one of them. South african Cardinal Wilfred napier agrees its time for the papacy to look far beyond europe and told us hed like to see a pope from the developing world. Reporter and the americans . Unfortunately, i think no one will be too keen to have an american pope because they say he might be dominated by the american government. Reporter napier spoke with us this weekend despite the gag order on voting cardinals speaking with the press. He told us hes going into the conclave with a couple of names in mind. He says the first ballot is really like a shotgun blast scattering a lot of names, and after that, the factions begin to coalesce around second, third choices, people that seem to be getting traction. Back home, a conclave of a different sort, slightly less holy, the president willing lunching on capitol hill as part of a major Charm Offensive aimed at finding a resolution to those budget cuts that go by the weird name of sequester. So, george, what do you make of the change in strategy on the president s part going from basically not communicating with Republican Leaders at all to wining and dining them. Will that get him the grand bargain hes well see. Itll take some time, motivated by two things, the outside game at least in the short term wasnt working for the president. Trying to raise all these alarms about the sequester but it didnt seem to be taking hold because people havent felt it yet and, number two, now that the sequester actually has kicked in, theres no other option but to try to build these relationships and see what can come of it. But right now you still have the Republican Leadership and the president at odds over the issue of whether or not taxes can be part of any grand bargain. That could possibly only change as we get through the summer, as we see the effects of these spending cuts and as they approach the next big deadline. Theres always a deadline or cliff coming. This one is over the debt limit again, the nation runs out of its borrowing authorities sometime in summer. That could be the forcing mechanism. Governments by cliff. Overnight another report ashley judd, movie star turned activist may jump into the race in kentucky to take on Senate Minority leader mitch mcconnell. Do you think this is real . Do you think shell run and could she win . Shes definitely looking at it. No question about that. Theyre saying if she decides to run, shell announce it around the date of the kentucky derby. Now, the difficulties for her right now is she doesnt live in kentucky where shes going to run. A small technicality. Thats a small one. But republicans are taking this very seriously. They have already run ads against ashley judd in kentucky pointing out that she doesnt live there, taking things she said in the past that might not appeal to kentucky voters and they take her seriously and know any longterm incumbent right now faces the threat of defeat. Federal regulators are investigating a collision at Kennedy Airport in new york city. The wing tip of this india aircraft clipped a jetblue aircraft parked at a gate. No one hurt but the jetblue passengers had to be taken off that aircraft and transferred to a different plane. There have been seven similar incidents in just the past two years. And former South African president Nelson Mandela is back in the hospital this morning. The 94yearold antiapartheid leader was admitted saturday for a scheduled checkup. Doctors say theres no cause for alarm, but they have said the same thing in the past only to reveal later that mandelas condition was more serious than they first let on. And Queen Elizabeth is set to make history tomorrow. She will sign a new charter backing equal rights including gay rights and gender equality in every commonwealth nation. It will be the first time in her 61year rule that the queen is supporting gay rights. The historic pledge is also seen as a sign she supports new laws giving an equal path to the throne for boys and girls. And a baseball game, call it a basebrawl game, between canada and mexico turned very ugly last night in arizona. Several fights erupted on the field and the benches cleared, a baseball tradition, after a canadian player was hit by a pitch in the world baseball classic. Seven players were ejected from that game. Fights broke out in the stands and a canadian coach was hit in the face. You see it there. Water bottle thrown from the crowd. Quite a melee there in arizona. Finally, british researchers have, well, they have a new theory about the origins of stonehenge. It may have been a place to party and also a cemetery or a place to party and then die, i guess. The researchers believe the ancient stone circle is originally known for mass celebration and also a graveyard. There, of course, have been other theories of the Rock Monument including that it was a place of worship and an astronomical observatory, a place to party. We just love your interpretations, ron. Parties are suing walmart after the store falsely accused them of taking pornographic pictures of their daughters that were actually just fun, innocent bathtime photos. The couple wound up losing custody of their kids and say the mixup has made their life a nightmare. Abcs tanya rivero has that story. Good morning. Reporter good morning. The demarees are hoping their fouryear legal with walmart after unimaginable accusations will be finally resolved by an Appeals Court in the weeks ahead and they can get their lives back on track. Overnight walmart tells abc news its employees did the right thing when they reported anthony and lisa demaree to the authorities over these and other bathtime photos of their three daughters fearing the images were pornographic. In a statement the retail giant says, we believe our associates acted appropriately in notifying authorities, who then decided whether to investigate. It was a nightmare. It was unbelievable. Reporter that nightmare began in 2009 when the demarees went to this walmart in peoria, arizona, to develop Family Vacation photos. One of the photos is three of the girls laying down on a towel with their arms around each other, and we thought it was so cute. Reporter the three young girls, the baby just 18 months old at the time, were taken away by child protective services, but a medical exam showed no signs of abuse, and a judge ruled the pictures harmless. I think everybody agreed there was no such sexual intent. Reporter the children came home over a month later, but the damage was done. We even went on to a central registry for sex offenders. 90 , 95 of the families out there in america have the same same photos. Theres nothing to them. Reporter they fought back suing walmart but lost the first round when a judge ruled employees cant be held liable for reporting suspected child pornography. Now the couple is appealing to a higher court. Their lawyer telling abc news, walmart was negligent giving untrained clerks tremendous power over the lives of their customers. Reporter as crazy as it may seem, what you consider to be the most beautiful, innocent pictures of your children can be perceived as something very perverted. Reporter now what this legal battle boils down to is this arizona law protecting employees who report suspected child abuse in good faith. While the parents claim walmart failed to warn customers their photos would be judged by untrained employees, no word yet dan and bianna, when the Appeals Court will have a final decision. Right away the sender fesses up to use his players to help with the game. Right, genius, great way to meet a girl, use my girls, lol. I was a little flattered by the attention, but i was unsure. Reporter aagard carried on the conversation for over an hour at one point asking about work, quote, what do you teach . He answered special education, earning some praise from aagard who said ooo, caregiver, nice. He was definitely coming on strong. So what happened next . Aagard says a quick internet search led him to these stories from local papers about his departure from another coaching position at a school nearby Lake Washington. I was completely shocked. Reporter Lake WashingtonSchool District reportedly found no cause to discipline hennum for texting a student in 2012. Still, by the next season, he was no longer on staff. Aagard says after learning this she reported him to roosevelt high schools principal and Seattle Public Schools confirmed thats when the softball coach just six days into his job was placed on unpaid leave. Now, hennum has not responded to numerous phone calls and emails but the Seattle Times is reporting that coach hennum has resigned his position with roosevelt high.
