Covered this morning. Everybodys somewhere. We all heard of the dreamliner. Its the hightech, new plane thats supposed to revolutionize air travel. Well, a fire on board one of them right after landing at boston airport is raising new alarms this morning. The good news is, the fire happened after landing. Yes, big deal there. And milliondollar murder. The mystery surrounding a Lottery Winners death, just one day after he scored that winning ticket. Very strange. Were going to get to that. We begin with breaking news from Gabby Giffords. Two years ago today, she was shot with so many others in a tucson parking lot. Since then, there have been 11 Mass Shootings in america, including the tragedy in newtown, so fresh in our minds. After visiting the families in newtown, gabby and her husband, mark kelly, sat down in an exclusive interview to announce a new National Initiative to prevent gun violence. We saw you in newtown. How was newtown . Tough. It brought back a lot of memories of what that was like for us some two years ago today. And you hope that thats this kind of thing doesnt happen again. But you know what . It does happen again. Reporter Gabby Giffords, somber, yet resilient. Opening up for the first time about the horror at sandy hook elementary school. She and her husband, mark kelly, spent a day with some of the victims families. First couple we spoke to. The dad took out his cell phone and showed us a picture of his daughter. And i just about lost it. Reporter the couple told diane that newtown was their turning point. I have a gun. Gabby and i are both gun owners. We are strong supporters of the second amendment. But we have to do something to keep the guns from getting into the wrong hands. Reporter and this morning yes, yes. Reporter on the twoyear anniversary of the shooting in tucson, they plan to do something about it. Announcing their campaign for responsible changes to gun laws. Working with politicians to take highpowered gun lobbyists headon. They hope to engage the nation in a real discussion about preventing gun violence. When it can happen to children in a classroom, its time to say enough. And they are taking this nationwide. Also on the cover of usa today this morning. Everyone can see more of dianes exclusive interview with Gabby Giffords and mark kelly on world news tonight and nightline. Lets go to josh in miami with the other top news. Hey, josh. Hey, george. That interview, not to be missed. Were going to begin with breaking news. A Major Development into the investigation of that deadly attack on the u. S. Consulate in benghazi, libya. We just learned that the only suspect being held in connection with the attack is now a free man. An attorney for suspect ali harzi, says his client was released by authorities in tunisia because of a lack of evidence. Though he has been ordered not to leave the country. Four americans were killed in that attack on september 11th, including ambassador chris stevens. And a second day of emotional testimony is expected today in a crowded colorado courtroom, as a key hearing resumes for accused Movie Theater shooter james holmes. Police officers broke down monday as they recalled finding the victims and trying to save those who were injured on that night back in july. Holmes, charged with killing 12 people, shooting dozens of others, sat calmly in court, showing no expression. His infamous red hair, now brown. This hearing will determine whether holmes stands trial. And news that broke overnight. Word that aig, the Insurance Company that got a massive 182 billion government bailout, is now thinking about suing the very people who saved it from collapsing. The New York Times reports the company may join a 25 billion lawsuit against the government, claiming the bailout was, in fact, unconstitutional and cheated shareholders out of billions of dollars in profit. And a grim search is back under way this morning in new jersey, for two teenagers who slipped through the ice of a frozen lake. The boys were heard screaming for help last night. Apparently, as the ice beneath them cracked. And we have video of another treacherous ordeal on the ice. A woman pulled from a frigid river in toledo, ohio. Shed been hanging on to that chunk of ice you see there for one hour before crews could finally manage to reach her. And a terrifying moment for morning commuters at a crowded rail station in new jersey. All of a sudden, look at this. An escalator going up stopped and started speeding downward. You can see riders in a panic, actually trying to jump off. Five people were injured in the chaos. All escalators at that station are, today, shut down. And finally, what we all saw here in miami last night. College footballs purported clash of its titans. With more subplots than a hollywood movie. But in the end, none of it came to pass. After weeks of anticipation, and with 80,000 fans packing miamis sunlife stadium, and an estimated 30 million watching on tv, undefeated number oneranked notre dame was simply no match for the raw power of number two, alabama. As the crimson tide faithful looked on with glee, dumbstruck irish fans could barely watch. Notre dame right now just cant do anything right. Reporter the rout began just moments after notre dames opening kickoff. Alabama twice rolled down the field, scoring touchdowns on its first two drives. Touchdown, the other williams reporter by the half, the score was 280. If this was a prize fight, theyd call it off. Reporter the game had become a rout, made all the more surprising because of the hype surrounding this matchup. Notre dame, the resurgent storied crown jewel of the north. Versus the preeminent powerhouse of the south. Right now, its high tide in miami. Reporter it was a sweet home alabama night. One that brought a secondconsecutive national title, the third in four years. Establishing Coach Nick Sabans crimson tide as College Footballs preeminent dynasty. Im proud of what they were able to accomplish this year. Pretty special. Gives me chills just thinking about it. [ cheers ] it was a remarkable night. Of course, one that crimson tide fans will long remember. One that fighting irish fans would love to forget. And to that end, alabama has how established itself as a dynasty. A shocking thing in the age of parity in the college game. Well be joined this morning by a couple of the newly crowned champions. A very special play of the day, as the sun rises here on miami beach, guys. Cannot wait for that. Okay, josh. Thanks very much. Were going to turn to washington now. And the debate sparked by president obamas new picks for his National Security team. Former republican senator chuck hagel is in for a confirmation fight before he becomes defense secretary. And obama aide john brennan will also face some tough questions in his bid for the cia. Jon karl is covering it all from washington. Good morning, jon. Reporter the president has put together the final pieces of his National Security team. But hell have to do battle with congress before getting them all in place. The president is wasting no time defending his chosen National Security team. My number one criteria in making these decisions was simple. Who is going to do the best job in securing america . Reporter president obamas choice for defense secretary, chuck hagel, is a decorated vietnam veteran, with shrapnel from that war still in his chest. Mr. President , i will always give you my honest and most informed counsel. Reporter while hes a former republican senator, this morning, hes drawing sharp criticism from both the right and the left, after comments he made in 2006 about israel. On monday, Republican House majority leader eric cantor, who is jewish, said hagel is the wrong man for the job. I will make it my mission to ensure that the cia has the tools it needs to keep our nation safe. Reporter mr. Obamas choice to run the cia, his trusted counterterrorism adviser john brennan, is also facing pushback from the president s supporters on the left, because he supported socalled enhanced interrogation techniques used in the bush administration. Meanwhile, outgoing secretary of state Hillary Clinton received a warm welcome as she returned to the state department for the First Time Since sustaining a concussion in early december. She was surprised with gifts, including a football helmet to protect that injured head. And a jersey with the number 112, to symbolize the number of countries shes visited as secretary of state. One more big change to the second term cabinet could come later this week. E expect the current chief of staff, jack lew, to replace outgoing treasury secretary tim geithner. Hillary clinton is leaving. John kerry coming in. Before she goes, she will testify on the attack on the u. S. Consulate in benghazi. Reporter thats right. The white house fully expects that hillary will testify on benghazi before she leaves as secretary of state, doing something republicans have been demanding for a long time. Jon karl, thanks very much. Now, to the fire that broke out on a boeing dreamliner at Logan International airport in boston, right after passengers got off that jet. The Japan Airlines 787 was parked at the gate. No one was injured. But the fire was the latest in a string of incidents for the hightech new jetliner. Abcs jim avila is in washington with the latest. Jim, good morning. Reporter good morning, amy. Few things are as frightening as smoke on an airplane. But fortunately, in this case, the only real damage was done to the reputation of boeings new dreamliner airplane. Firefighters at bostons logan field, dousing smoke on the plane of the future, boeings 787 dreamliner. A plane made mostly of carbon fiber, a fancy name for plastic, just a halfhour after an incidentfree landing. Passengers were deplaned normally through the jet bridge process. Reporter but minutes later, a mechanic working in the cockpit of the jal jet was confronted by smoke from the electrical system in the belly of the plane. We observed a heavy smoke condition in the entire cabin. Reporter this is the latest nightmarish incident for the dreamliner since its 2011 release. Now, flying only six of them in the u. S. Last month, the faa ordered inspections of all 787s for fuel line leaks. On the same day, a United Airlines 787 was diverted to the closest airport because of a generator failure. And a similar fire broke out during test flights of the cuttingedge airliner. This event occurred in the same avionics bay where they had problems before. It raises a lot of questions, which will be looked at very carefully, as quickly as possible. Reporter but most aviation experts believe this is just a new plane. As i saw at the boeing plant, one that is using an entirely new design, built differently with new systems and materials. And now, going through a shakeout period. I wouldnt be concerned as a passenger. This is a very good airplane. But its a very advanced airplane thats pushing the envelope. Reporter and in fact, boeing says it is helping its customer to try to find out what happened on this particular plane. The National Transportation safety board is also investigating, as the dreamliner tries to live up to its name. Amy . Hopefully some answers to come. Jim avila, thanks so much. George . Were going to stay in the air right now. To a highflying wedding that ended in an alarming crashlanding for a couple getting married up in the air. Everyone is okay. But, boy, what a scare it was. Abcs rob nelson has the story. Hey, rob. Reporter good morning. Scare is the right word. As many of us know, marriages are supposed to be for better or worse. But for the couple youre about to meet, that worse part came way too soon and way too high. Brace. Reporter it was supposed to be a romantic sunset wedding in a hot air balloon. But romance quickly turned to fear. Oh oh reporter the couple, and 11 others, including their Wedding Party and the balloons operator, bracing for a crashlanding. Oh. Oh, yeah. Oh reporter kerin and Jonathan Narcisse had just exchanged their wedding vows thousands of feet in the air. God of amazing love, we ask you for your blessing. Reporter now, they were on their sides, stranded in a strangers backyard. This is our crash and landing here. Reporter a member of the Wedding Party recorded the crash on her cell phone. The newlyweds had no idea what was happening. First couple times he tried to land. We floated over, yeah. We kept missing landing spots. Next thing you know, were descending. And im thinking, how is he going to land here because theres no place to land . Reporter the balloon hit a fence, skidded through some trees and then finally stopped. I got a little worried when we hit the fence. And i thought, if the fence doesnt stop us, were going down this hill. Reporter making the ordeal all the more terrifying, the brides dream of a midair wedding was actually the grooms worst nightmare. It turns out, he is scared of heights. I am. Terrified. Yes. Reporter and one of the balloons occupants did suffer a minor back injury. Was transported to a local hospital as a precaution. No other injuries were reported. The couple actually continued on to the reception. If there ever was a need for an open bar, that would be a good one. Excellent excuse. Thats exactly right. Thanks, rob. Sure. Guys, well, a story about a young girl with true grit. A sixth grader, caroline pla, has been playing football with boys since she was 5. And she wants to keep on playing. But her Catholic League in pennsylvania, wont let her. Deciding to enforce a boysonly policy. Abcs John Schriffen has been following this fight. And john, caroline and her parents are not backing down. Reporter amy, good morning. Her mother reportedly said the league found out about her daughter playing because another team told on her. Why . Maybe because shes really good. In fact, an allstar. Now, the 11yearold is hoping she hasnt played in her last game. Number 10, caroline pla, may be a mean, tackling machine. But this morning, shes been sacked. Thats because the archdiocese of philadelphia says it will now enforce its nogirlsallowed policy in the Catholic Youth Organization football league, where she has played the past two seasons. I was really angry. Not only am i not going to be able to play, other girls arent going to be able to play. And i personally know girls that have told me they want to play cyo football just like me. It is currently being reviewed. And will be addressed going forward. Now, plas fight to get back on the field has caught fire online. This petition has more than 7,000 signatures, including one from a 9yearold girl in utah who knows something about how pla feels. Now, in the new year, brooke is thankful for her health. Here we go. Reporter while looking forward to a new season of dancing with the stars and a Bright Future ahead with her family. A happy new year, indeed, for Brooke Burke Charvet. Thanks for being with us to talk about this scare. So happy to be here. Im one of the lucky ones. It was shocking. I never thought i would hear the word cancer in relation to myself. The movie in my mind, when i got the diagnosis, was im a mother, i have four children, i have a family counting on me. And a little scary to really hear that news. But i did my research. And that was an incredible medical team. And the message really is about preventative health. I have no symptoms. And generally, Thyroid Cancer, its very subtle symptoms. I went for a regular physical. A yearly physical. 56,000 people diagnosed last year. This affects more women than men. Mostly women. I think 15 men. Subtle symptoms. What can people look for . Change in the voice. I have a very, very subtle, little lump. That was questionable. So, i went in for my yearly, routine physical. And my doctor 15said, i want yo to get an ultrasound and check it out. Nothing serious. It was significant enough in size. I had a biopsy done. And the first biopsy came back atypical. Cant determine it cancer or not cancer. You can check it back in six months. And were fortunate to have access to genetic testing. I went in and had some really detailed tests done. My doctor, len bronstein. And sure enough, it came back, and it was 75 sure of cancer. You were so honest about blogging about this. One of your entries was particularly heartbreaking. That was your little boys reaction to you having cancer. All of the children handled it differently. I chose not to tell my husband and chose not to share it with the children too soon. I was waiting several months before i scheduled my surgery. My son actually said, is papa going to get it . In his mind at 4 years old, he doesnt know what cancer means. And my 6yearold was, mommy, im going to go with you. Im going to hold your hand. Im going to every appointment. My oldest daughter, when it was in the news, her friends came to her and said i heard about your mom. And she cried. She made me promise her that nothing was going to happen. Fortunately, i did a lot of research. And i knew that the prognosis for Thyroid Cancer was excellent. And i knew i was going to be okay. But i was also very fortunate that i was responsible enough to do a regular physical and then take action. Youre quite open and honest. No makeup on your scar. This is a first for me. But, you know, its fresh. Its a month old. And i think scars tell a story. And im so fortunate. You are so fortunate. And youre also already back at it. And i have reconstructed the architecture of my plate. Show us what you used to have for dinner. Wrong one. There it is. Fried chicken. Mac and cheese. I would have one or the other of these. The collared greens will really move you, sister. You know what i mean . I know what you mean. And a potato is good for you, as long as you dont load it with butter and sour cream. And then, the roasted chicken. Beautiful. And you say no diet food. What does for your dessert. No diet food, yall. I do not use diet mayonnaise. I dont use diet cream cheese nor sour cream. I would rather have the real stuff and just have a little bit of it. All right. Instead of having a lot of diet food. You have fried desserts, too . Yes. Whats under here . Oh. And now, to our newsmaker series and partnership with yahoo and edward jones, nightline anchor, terry moran, spoke with the hugely popular khan academy online. He asked for his impressions of bill gates. I think whats been amazing to me, i always suspected looking at it from afar, hes an icon, is how much he deeply cares about education. And really understands the issues. People have their own views. But like my conversations, he thinks teachers are it. Teachers, hes like, this technology is nice. We can help. The tools are nice. The datas nice. But at the end of the day, its about having a great teacher. Thats whats moving the dial. And thats what he cares about. One of my favorite movies of the year is argo up for five Golden Globes this sunday, including best director for ben affleck. Its a true story based on cia agent tony mendez, who hatched a plot to free six americans during the iran hostage crisis, by having them pretend their a film crew. What was the last movie you produced . High and dry. Who paid for that . Whats your middle name . Leon. Shoot him. Hes an american spy. Look, theyre going to try to break you. Trying to get you agitated. You have to know your resume backtofront. You believe your story is going to make a difference when theres a gun to our heads . I think my storys the only thing between you and a gun to your head. Were lucky to have the first live interview with tony mendez and ben affleck. Thanks to you both. Thanks for having us. Its very exciting. So, how did he do . He was okay. Hes not goodlooking enough. Yeah. You know, im glad you brought that up because i did my research. And i read that he was actually not your first choice to play tony mendez. Well, the women are a little bit sorry that george is not sitting here today. George clooney . Yeah. Tony was telling me this first. Maybe george. Maybe brad. I dont know. Will smith. That would have been good . Yeah. Move the venue to manhattan. Maybe your third choice. But how great, to get this real slice of history. Like this is the first time youve seen us together. And i guess its going to be the last. But i know you all work so well together. And, tony, for you, one of the most moving scenes in the film for me was when you received one of the highest decorations in the cia. And it becomes so clear that youre going to have to keep it secret. No ones going to know. For 30 years. And 30 years later, the whole world knows. How does that feel . Its a terrible thing. Our job is to keep the secrets, not give them away. But not to give them away. But with time, i think one of the things the film does, ben, is to give some perspective on the work the cia did. And one of the things that tony gives you credit for, is really being true to the details of so much of the actual datetoday work of the cia operatives. Aside from not being will smith, i think tony has credited us with trying to really be fest dids you. The way the families and kids they dont get to see. The foreign service, which we saw in its most tragic and dramatic form in benghazi. And the way that what these people do in silence, and without accolades or any of the things i got my 3yearold. She walks on to the soccer field. She gets a participation trophy. And these guys are risking their lives. And no ones hearing about it. Thats what i wanted to honor with this movie. What did you want people most to know about that story in particular . Well, i think it would be nice if we werent portrayed as deranged assassins. You know . So, the fact is, were human beings. And we have families. And we go out and do a job every day like most people. And we prevail. You prevail. And i love the story of when youre shooting the film, you made a cameo appearance in the film. But he doesnt come alone. He brings his whole family. Yeah. Tony was like, can i be in the movie . What do you want to be in the movie. In the airport. Great. Maybe my wife should be with me. Definitely. What about the kids . Okay. Hes like, what about my cousin and my aunt . Finally, its like the mendez tour group that goes through the screen. Mendez bus up here, please. Not only you get to be in the movie, but your entire family does. And you get the recognition that you deserve, after so long. And, ben, its got to be gratifying to you, as well. This is a serious, adult movie that people went and saw. Yeah. I mean, for one thing, the conventional wisdom, people dont see enough dramas. People dont see movies about the middle east. People dont see movies with complicated themes. It was really encouraging to have people see the movie. And a movie that deals with things like, this is the inception of our relationship with iran that continues to be thorny. And probably the foremost policy issue for america. And tells a human story about a guy from the cia. And one where nobody comes out and uses a gun. Its not an assassin ninja movie. Its about solving the problems with diplomacy. Keep your mouth shut. And that is the last word. There you go. Thanks very much. Argo is being rereleased in theaters across the country this friday.
