"your voice, your vote." and we'll hear from abc's reena ninan, covering the romney campaign in just a moment. but first, abc's david kerley is at the white house. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, bianna. flat. disappointing. some would call this a dismal jobs report. and it has the president trying out a new message on voters. he's asking for more time. the president bounded on to a stage in new hampshire, less than 12 hours after accepting his nomination, trying to put the most positive spin he could on those disappointing jobs numbers. >> after losing around 800,000 jobs a month when i took office, business, once again, added jobs for the 30th month in a row. >> reporter: true. still, 23 million americans are unemployed. and the president acknowledges all the frustration. >> that's not good enough. we know it's not good enough. we need to create more jobs, faster. >> reporter: and that is part of a new narrative, which the president introduced in his acceptance speech. pleading for patience. claiming his plan to fix the economy takes more than four years. >> yes, our path is harder. but it leads to a better place. yes, our road is longer. but we travel it together. >> reporter: selling his path, even though the jobs numbers play right into the hands of the republicans. so, mr. obama continues to claim the republican plans are old, tired, and not the prescription for the economy. >> tax cuts. tax cuts. gut some regulations. and oh, more tax cuts. tax cuts, when times are good. tax cuts when times are bad. it will cure anything, according to them. i'm reena ninan, covering the romney campaign, where they're taking those obama charges on directly. it was a sucker-punch aimed directly where the obama campaign hurts the most. >> jobs numbers. >> unemployment rate. >> jobs. >> getting back to work. >> reporter: without hesitation, romney pouncing on the new unemployment numbers. >> i know how to get the private sector to create 12 million new jobs. i know what it's going to take to do that. >> reporter: mitt romney and vice presidential candidate paul ryan, convincing americans a vote for obama won't make them or their pocketbooks better off. >> for every person who got a job, nearly four people stopped looking for a job. they gave up. we can't keep doing this. >> reporter: hoping that history might repeat itself, where presidential incumbents like ford, carter and bush in '92, failed to convince voters, despite similar economic woes, just why the country was better off with them. >> here in colorado, we're not better off under president obama. >> reporter: and knowing that the economy's unlikely to bounce back by november, on friday, the campaign released 15 new ads, targeting 8 states, explaining how mitt romney plans to help. >> the romney plan, repeal obama's excessive regulations, foster innovation, and create over 200,000 new jobs. >> reena and david join us live now. why is the romney camp releasing so many ads now? and do they think it will make a difference? >> reporter: focus now is on intense key battleground states. and romney is likely to make history this election cycle. becoming the first challenger to outspend a sitting president. >> and, david, how worried are the obama team that that poor jobs report will eat away at any post-convention bounce they were hoping for? >> reporter: well, they're going to watch it. but they feel they came out of the convention with the momentum. they say they're ahead in every battleground state this morning. that's good news. they're waiting for the next polls to come out after both conventions. look for the president over the next couple of weeks, before the debates, to be out in those battleground states, asking voters to go vote early. they'd like to bank as many votes as possible. they think they have the momentum right now. >> reena, we finally heard from clint eastwood after that empty chair speech. what did he have to say about that? >> reporter: yeah, he spoke to a local california paper. he said he came up with the idea just minutes before he went on stage. and, bianna, he said it was mission accomplished for his job at the republican national convention. >> well, people are still talking about it. so, i guess he has a point there. reena and david, thank you so much. and congressman paul ryan joins george stephanopoulos tomorrow on "this week." a show, we'll be sure to watch. we're going to turn to ron claiborne with the other top stories developing. >> hey, there. good morning, everyone. we begin with an arrest in the fake bomb threat that forced a plane to turn around and land in philadelphia. kenneth smith jr. was charged with making a false threat, after allegedly admitting that he phoned police and told them that a passenger on the flight had liquid explosives. smith was trying to get revenge on his new girlfriend's ex, the passenger, who he said had the explosives, because he posted compromising photos of her on facebook. one of arnold schwarzenegger's last acts as governor of california, was distasteful and repugnant, but not illegal, according to a state judge who ruled that the former governor does not break any laws when he reduced the manslaughter sentence for the son of a political ally. schwarzenegger cut his sentence from 16 years to 7 years. and four nfl players suspended for their roles in the new orleans saints pay-for-pain bounty scandal have been reinstated. an appeals panel found that the commissioner of the nfl did not have the authority to impose the suspensions. but the players could be suspended again, if the league shows there was an intent to injure other players. and take a look at this terrifying video. a maryland state trooper, nearly run over by a tractor-trailer after pulling over an suv. that is something. you see the trooper stumble to the guardrail after the truck slams into the vehicle. the accident happened back in june. but state police in maryland just released the video. the trooper is still recovering from shoulder, back and leg injuries. the truck driver was fined $100 for negligent driving. and finally, a bear in ohio has attracted quite a following. a black bear that spent part of the day in a tree. dan likes that. on tuesday, is still managing to elude animal control officials. the bear has been spotted in neighborhoods all over northeastern ohio and has his own twitter account. >> of course he does. >> like me. with more than 1,700 followers. the bear doesn't really have a twitter account. >> it's a sorry state of affairs, when the bear has a twitter account, and ron claiborne -- >> i knew you were going there. the bear and i will share a twitter account. >> we'll figure it out. >> thank you. >> thank you, ron. now, to one of the most beautiful places in this country, where a fatal virus is spreading this morning, a virus that has just killed a third person. and right now, scientists are scrambling to warn tens of thousands of others who visited yosemite national park. abc's john muller is on the story. good morning, john. >> reporter: good morning, dan. this has gone global. the u.s. health officials have sent warnings that citizens that stayed at the yosemite tents may have been exposed to a deadly virus with no cure. thousands across the u.s., also being warned. throughout the park, warnings posted. park rangers flagging motorists as they enter. but the greatest danger could be for those who already left yosemite. tens of thousands now at risk. >> this is possibly the greatest cluster which has occurred, certainly, in the united states, that i'm aware of. >> reporter: so far, eight people have come down with the hantavirus. three of them have died in states as far flung as california, pennsylvania and west virginia. and there could be more cases as far away as france. the main outbreak traced to the popular curry village campsite, where rodents burrowed into tents. now, a second campsite in tuolomne meadows, red flagged. warnings like these went out to 10,000 people who visited curry village since june. late this week, notices went out to an additional 19 visitors at tuolomne visitors. 29,000 park visitors in all, all being warned about the hantavirus symptoms. they include fever, fatigue, and chills at first. they quickly give way to coughing, breathing problems as the lungs filled with fluid. and tourists are worried. >> actually, i had a mouse run across my head. scared me pretty good. >> the only way for someone to contract hantavirus, is by breathing in particles of mouse feces and mouse urine. and it has to be an inclosed area, somewhere where there's not a lot of ventilation. >> reporter: now, warning the visitors in question is crucial because it's easy to think the initial symptoms are a common flu. while there's no cure, early detection, through blood tests, increases survival rates, as well as supervision, when a life is on the line. dan? >> john muller, thank you. new worries this morning about prince harry in afghanistan. the last time he was deployed, you may remember, he was a big secret. this time, though, they've announced it beforehand. what's more, he's arriving at an especially dangerous time. and he's on a taliban hit list. so, how are they going to keep him safe? abc's muhammad lila is in kabul this morning. muhammad? >> reporter: good morning, dan. you'll recall the last time the prince was here, his deployment was cut short when it was leaked on the internet. this time around, british officials have announced his visit. and that makes him a target. right now, the prince is in helmand province, one of the most dangerous places on the planet. joining the mission amid a huge upsurge of insider attacks, when afghan soldiers turn their weapons on coalition partners. >> real worry is that somebody tries to infiltrate on the base. someone appearing as a civilian worker on the base. >> reporter: to protect against that, harry is staying at one of the most fortified bases in the country, with no contact with afghan soldiers. for the next four months, prince harry, or captain wales, as he's known, is giving up his swanky lifestyle for the front seat of this, an apache attack helicopter. so lethal, it can fire more than 600 rounds a minute. >> he is right in the thick of it. he is doing the most important job of any helicopter pilot in the coalition can do in afghanistan. >> reporter: that mission comes with serious risk. in the past month alone, 4 coalition helicopters have crashed, killing 15 foreign troops. the taliban claimed to have shot them all down. >> anytime you spend a lot of time around bad guys who are shooting at you, there's always a danger of being brought down. >> reporter: but the prince is no stranger to life on the edge. his recent late-night romp in vegas, may have even made him the people's prince. spawning a rash of lookalike photos from soldiers, showing support and everything else. >> he's a soldier first, and a prince second. he knows he's in a privileged position. when he's a prince, he works in that, as we saw a few days ago at a charity event. but he's a soldier. he volunteered for the army. he volunteered to fly apache helicopters. >> reporter: now that he's here in afghanistan, the prince will be serving alongside some of the very soldiers who gave him those cheeky salutes. he is expected to take to the air on his first mission some time within the next ten days. dan? bianna? >> thank you, muhammad. so, from afghanistan, we move, now, to a very different date line. we're going to college station, texas, and meteorologist, ginger zee. you're going to tell us now, ginger, why you're there, right?
