peace, everybody. coming up on the show, sylvester stallone, speaking out for the first time since losing his son. it's a revealing interview about picking up the pieces. he's so honest about it. big news for taylor swift fans. her fourth studio album is on the way, coming out in october. we have another big announcement right here on "gma" about taylor this morning. we'll tell you that in a little bit. let's get to the fires raging out of control across several western states. putting firefighters in danger right now. ginger zee has been tracking it overnight. has the latest for us now. good morning, ginger. >> good morning, george. look at this photo. i'm going to take you right inside the fire. this is what it looks like at ground level. a highway just north of san francisco shut down by the eerie, billowing smoke. this scene repeated in at least ten states. 60 different places. lightning, heat, drought, the perfect recipe for a fiery disaster. raging blaze. more than 60 uncontained fires are taking over parts of the west. oregon, nevada, utah on fire. more than 40 homes were destroyed in washington state, east of seattle. a 20-year-old firefighter was killed as she battled a fire in idaho. north of san francisco, one of the largest fires. the fire now covers over 6,000 acres. 500 homes were evacuated. tankers and helicopters are rushing in to help. at joshua tree, highways and trails shut down. 300 acres have burned. here's part of the problem. temperatures have soared to record highs. up to 117 degrees in california. and it's been very dry. thunderstorms are producing what's called dry lightning, sparking the fires. this california man was standing on his porch when this bolt came a little too close for comfort. >> i felt my hair kind of lift up on my arms. and felt this tingle in my body. and two seconds later, the lightning bolt hit. seemed maybe just ten feet away. >> so, the heat continues today. not good news. there's some good news for northern california, parts of oregon. the winds will be slightly lighter. still some red flag warnings in idaho and montana. we'll be tracking it throughout the morning. george? >> lots of 100s on that board. let's get the top stories with josh. >> we're going to begin with tense moments. an emergency landing at kennedy airport here in new york. a delta flight from boston to kansas city, forced to jfk after not one but two tires on the main landing gear blew out during takeoff. the plane did land safely. and all 77 people onboard were all right. a gun battle near texas a&m university has left three people dead. an officer serving an eviction notice was killed by the resident. a s.w.a.t. team arrived. in the resulting gun fight a bystander was killed. three were hurt before police finally killed the gunman. the shooting took place just days before 50,000 students are set to return to school. new details this morning about congressman jesse jackson jr. the mayo clinic says it's treating him for bipolar disorder which leads to periods of depression and elation. jackson took a leave from congress two months ago. a member of our abc family has died after a public battle with a brain tumor. kathi goertzen had been on the air for some three decades at our seattle station komo. she was diagnosed 12 years ago. despite multiple surgeries and radiation treatment, the tumor continued to grow back. she was an absolute legend in the pacific northwest. and she will be missed. kathi goertzen was just 54 years old. and america's obesity epidemic is growing. 12 states now have very high obesity rates, up from 9 just a year ago. the three with the highest rates, mississippi, louisiana and west virginia. the three states with the lowest obesity rate, colorado, hawaii and massachusetts. and the price tag for the auto bailout is climbing. new numbers now peg the taxpayers' cost at some $25 billion. an extra $3 billion in losses added because general motors' stock is down sharply. some video we saw at the top of the show. a hair raising crash for two speed racers in colorado. the driver and the co-rider, on the 12-mile course, took the turn far too fast. they skid off the road and down this embankment. they flip at least a dozen times here. however, stunningly, we say this all the time in car races, both men inside that car survived. they were well enough to tweet, a little beaten up, but nothing major. i, for one, have no interest in finding out what is major. that's all i'm saying. >> that's incredible. >> they are both okay. they are both okay. >> thanks. now, we're going to talk about a race of another kind. the race for the white house. president obama and challenger mitt romney, attacking each other on the campaign trial. and romney's running mate, paul ryan, taking a lot of heat for his plans to overhaul medicare. jake tapper is at the white house with the latest on all of that. jake? >> reporter: good morning, you know, one-third of all voters have no opinion of paul ryan. so, president obama and the democrats are eager to fill in the blanks for them. in drought-plagued iowa, the president planned to plant seeds of doubt. >> too many members of congress are blocking the farm bill from becoming a law. >> reporter: trying to make mitt romney's running mate, paul ryan, the face of house rep intransigents. the president took time to hydrate himself. >> it is ice cold and tasty. >> reporter: and others at the iowa state fair. >> four more beers. >> four more beers? >> reporter: ryan also hit the state fair. where he sold his wares. >> you see the president come through on his bus tour, you might ask him the same question that i'm getting asked from people all around america. and that is, where are the jobs, mr. president? >> reporter: despite some liberal hecklers, overnight, first lady michelle obama refrained from heckling when asked about romney's choice by jay leno. >> were you surprised by that? >> i haven't spent much time thinking about that. and don't know ryan that well. but we welcome them to the campaign. >> reporter: but the obama team is trying to drive up ryan's unfavorable ratings by hammering his controversial proposal for medicare for future retirees. when asked about that proposal in senior-laden florida, even romney refused to say he completely endorsed the plan. >> well, the items that we agree on i think outweigh any differences there might be. we haven't gone through piece by piece and said, here's a place where there's a difference. >> reporter: george, the candidates today will be focused on parochial energy issues in ohio. mitt romney will attack president obama for waging, quote, a war on coal. and in iowa, president obama will attack mitt romney for opposing tax credits for wind farms which are an important issue in that battle ground state. george? >> a new front, thanks very much, jake. let's get more from republican strategist, mary matalin down in new orleans. mary, thank you for joining us. let's look at the paul ryan pick. certainly gave a burst to energy to mitt romney and the campaign. you could see that on the trail. but the first polls out. they are alarming. he has the lowest initial ratings for a v.p. nominee since 1988. how worried should the romney campaign be about that? >> i don't think they should be worried about all. they should be and are ecstatic. we had a referendum on the president, on every election since his election. president obama's election. his policies have been soundly rejected. most recently in the historic midterm. with this choice of ryan, congressman ryan, by governor romney indicates this is not just going to be a campaign but a presidency of purpose. and that governor romney wants to be president to do something. he doesn't want to just be elected to have power and keep power. he's making a purposeful presidency based on principles. >> the debate over the plans has already begun. in this modern age, it boils down to a tweet. president obama put out a tweet last night to his 18.5 million followers saying romney and ryan want to end med karp as we know it and while giving millionaires a tax cut. that's the core argument of the obama campaign right now. how do romney and ryan beat that line? what's their tweet? >> here's the choice, george. president obama has ended medicare as we know it. he's taken $716 billion out of it. and he put 15 bureaucrats in washington in charge of it, who will be making decisions about the kind of health care seniors should receive. we can choose that or choose the romney/ryan version, where seniors choose their own health care. and it's predicated on those reforms are predicated on an idea that was born in the clinton administration. premium support. it has bipartisan support. and it is the only future for medicare. we won't have a medicare, or at least medicare that can deliver quality care unless we reform it now. >> finally, if you look at the likability gap in this race. mitt romney has an unfavorable rating of 49%. it's been going in the wrong direction for the last couple months. how does he turn that around? is that the next big job he has? >> barack obama has spent and is still spending, from the clips that jake just played, over $100 million in three states, three-quarters of it negative, attacking mitt romney. mitt romney has to keep doing what he is doing, which is run a principled and problem-solving campaign, which will portend a prosperous and positive presidency, george. >> thanks, mary. amy? turning to a new crash test for cars. take a look at this. they're not head-on collisions but partial crashes. something that the insurance institute of highway safety says better simulates a real-world accident with a real car. and abc's jim avila has all the details. >> reporter: it's the kind of serious accident that happens when a car hits a pole. or a tree. or another vehicle not quite head-on. the insurance institute calls it a small overlap frontal crash and it's responsible for one-quarter of all fatal front-end collisions. as the new crash tests show, most cars, domestic and foreign, are virtually unprepared to keep drivers safe during one. >> it represents a problem that is currently not being addressed by most vehicle front crash worthiness design. >> reporter: this is the first round of crash tests exposing this danger. no government agency does them yet. when shown side-by-side with head-on crashes, where the force is spread across the entire front end safety cage, you can easily see how much more dangerous this type of crash can be. cars are designed today, as the insurance institute video shows to absorb impact on the center of the vehicle, not on the corners. >> the main thing that needs to happen to provide better crash protection in these types of crashes is a stronger safety cage. >> reporter: only 3 of the 11 luxury cars put through the test, passed with good or acceptable ratings. the volvo s-60 and the acura tl did the best. the infinity g series results were acceptable. the worst? the lexus 350, with ten-times the damage of the volvo. the insurance institute says car manufacturers have done a good job with air bags and safety cages in cutting the number of deaths from head-on collisions. but 10,000 drivers and passengers a year still die from frontal crashes. 25% from the partial-impact accidents. the insurance institute hopes the new data will bring those numbers down again. george? now, to the border battle with canada that began at costco. thanks to the surging canadian dollar, bargain shoppers are crossing the border for great deals on bulk goods. as abc's neal karlinsky reports, that has a lot of american locals up in arms. >> reporter: not since the south park movie has there been so much cause to blame canada. ♪ blame canada >> reporter: in bellingham, washington, this morning, it's clear the canadians have landed. exhibit "a." a youtube video of a weird mad dash for cheap american milk from costco. this local costco a few miles from the canadian border is ground zero for the influx. right now, canada's dollar is much stronger than america's. and that favorable exchange rate has made the basics, plus gasoline, irresistible for hordes of canadian bargain hunters. you're pulling up extra? >> oh, yeah. >> reporter: the price difference is no joke. gas is more than a buck less than in canada right now. and milk is $5 a gallon less. >> we always save 20 bucks. >> 20, 30 bucks. >> reporter: canadian. canadian. canadian. canadian. canadian. canadian. they're all canadian. this store is so crammed with canadians, locals have started a facebook page with the pleading title, bellingham costco needs a special time for americans. it's like the border dropped 25 miles. americans should be able to find parking in their own country. some of the americans we were able to find told us, they aren't angry. but they have taken notice. >> it's like going to disney land when you come to costco. >> reporter: as our friends from the north were quick to point out, exchange rates can shift. many of the americans who are complaining now, may be bargain-hunting across the border later. for "good morning america," neal karlinsky, abc news, bellingham, washington. >> if they buy here, they create jobs here. it's good stuff. easy for us to say. we're not parking there. >> we're not waiting in line, either. i want to shift gears and celebrate a true pioneer. helen gurley brown. she is the legendary editor of "cosmopolitan" magazine. and she passed away at the age of 90. brown inspired millions of women to dream differently. and abc's sharyn alfonsi has her story. >> and when it comes to life and love -- >> reporter: long before "sex and the city's" carrie bradshaw, helen gurley brown wrote "sex and the single girl." the year, 1962. a best seller with a radical message the time. young women should enjoy work and sex. >> single girls weren't supposed to have a sex life. that wasn't the case, of course. they always have and always will. but it was sort of under ground. >> reporter: three years later, that philosophy and brown took over "cosmo" magazine. she is quoted as saying, good girls go to heaven. bad girls go everywhere else. and human humorously credited with separating more young women from their virginity than anyone else in the world. >> sex is one of the three best things there are. i'm unaware of the other two. >> reporter: as the grand dame for "cosmo" for more than three decades, she offered advice how to snag men and have good sex. druing criticism from conservatives. >> you said one way to spend a night alone, put on some records, dance naked for a couple hours. >> what is so outrageous about that? >> not a legal -- it's not a legal defense. my guess is, this is the kind of case that never goes to trial. >> why? >> these are the types of cases that tend to plead out. if she really did confess, as the authorities claim. the authorities say she confessed to doing it. here's why i did it. those are the kind of cases that tend to never make it to trial. they tend to work out an agreement. they tend to give someone a very low sentence. >> a lot will depend on the boyfriend. >> that's right. the question is, is he ready to move forward? is he ready to testify? does he want a deal? how angry is he? these are the sorts of things that become relevant in determining what kind of deal. >> does the judge take that into consideration, when they put this off for a few months? >> laura has great bone structure. she had shorter hair. it wasn't a huge leap. it was a big leap. i really knew with her hair texture, with her features, it would work really well. i did a variation of miley's. so, it is a little softer. it still has all of the undercutting and all of the fun elements. >> you didn't go platinum blonde with her. >> not today. maybe next time. >> what about miley? she had a classic look. and she took a dramatic change. what do you think about that? >> i like it. she's 19 years old. hair should be fun. she's at the right age to be experimental and play. it's not for everyone. but there are versions of that hair cut that you can do, like i've done here, that will work for different age groups. >> and we've seen lots of celebrities take the plunge. anne hathaway, just did a pixie put. michelle williams. gwyneth paltrow. is it hard for stars to make a drastic change? biggest muscles. >> i'll give it to him. >> where? >> reporter: these stars and their muscles may be larger than life. but they're not immune to the pains of the real world. it was just one month ago, that stallone's oldest child, sage, made famous playing rocky's son, was found dead in his l.a. home. he was only 36. his mysterious death remains under investigation. i know it's not easy for you. how are you hanging in there? >> it's tough. it's very tough. if you have good friends and family support, it's something that's a horrible situation. but time, hopefully, will heal. you try to get through it. but it's something -- it's a reality of life. >> reporter: maybe there's a little comfort, if you have to go through it -- >> you know, it's important to get back and try to start reliving your life. otherwise, you can go into a spiral. >> reporter: he's back at work. and surrounded by old friends. friends who just so happen to be really good at beating each other up. >> the fight sequence with sly, he always makes fun of me. >> i don't know why you call me mr. stallone. i don't understand it. >> mr. stallone and mr. schwarzenegger. when i was a kid in belgium, they were like role models. they gave me inspiration to be what i am today. >> shoot something. >> reporter: friends, also including bruce willis and chuck norris, who jumped at the chance to star in the follow-up to the original "the expendables," which two years ago, brought in nearly $300 million. >> i called out, everyone volunteered. like the alamo. let's go together and defend it. okay. i'm in. >> reporter: you literally called, though?
