the woman who cashed the $1 million ticket. what happens when finders keepers gets turned upside down? the rain has finally stopped here in times square. we have so much to get to this morning, everyone. what a wrenching day in the john edwards trial yesterday. so much emotion in the courtroom. his daughter cate was by his side all through the time. yesterday, she had to get up and leave the courtroom in tears. her father was calling after her in the courtroom. >> the testimony concerning her mother. and it was just too much. and this is just too much. junior seau the nfl star's sudden death. and why there's a lesson here for teen athletes. it's shaken up the sports world. >> and beyond the sports world. and check this out. what does this lion want right here? a vicious lion. i don't know what they're laughing about. you'll find out in just a second. see that little boy. he thinks it's lunch. we talk to the family live in a minute. first, we want to get to josh elliott, top stories breaking overnight, including the chinese dissident that's been the center of high-stakes negotiations between the u.s. and china. >> the diplomatic crisis in china, recording chen guangcheng. he's begging to fly to the united states, on secretary of state hillary clinton's plane. chen, who escaped house arrest and was sheltered at the u.s. embassy there in beijing, is rejecting a deal that would have allowed him to stay in china. telling abc news, in part that he fears for his family's safety. meanwhile, here at home we're learning about a new threat looming from al qaeda. it's not big-city airports that are the targets this time. rather, large swaths of the american west. and brian ross is here with the overnight details. >> reporter: good morning, josh. al qaeda's camps in afghanistan may be shut down. this morning, they're online sites are urging followers to attack america in disturbing new ways. citing the forest fires in the west, al qaeda says a well-placed firebomb could terrorize large areas of the country. in an online cover magazine called "inspire," al qaeda describes your freedom to ignite a firebomb. and describes in detail how to build a so-called ember bomb. and how to study weather mans for dangerously dry conditions. forest experts say the details are precise and troubling, given the dry conditions in the country right now. >> a wildfire moves quite quickly and can inflict damage. and if people have that intent it's very frightening. >> reporter: the online magazine also quotes what it says were the final instructions from the american-born al qaeda leader anwar al awlaki who was killed in a u.s. strike last september. al awlaki is quoted as saying the use of chemical and biological weapons against population centers is allowed and is strongly recommended. and the magazine also urges its followers to obtain handguns and carry out assassination plots against americans with political and economic ramifications. american authorities say they could take down the online magazine sites at any time. but they're left up because it provides a valuable intelligence tool and allows authorities to track those who visit the sites. josh? >> brian ross, thanks for that. police near phoenix says a white supremacist is behind a shooting rampage there. they say j.t. ready shot and killed his girlfriend and four people, including a baby before turning the gun on himself. and the san diego college student who was forgotten in a federal holding cell for five days is now suing the dea. daniel chong says he thought he was losing his mind after being left without food water or access to a toilet. he was swept up in a drug raid but never charged. and he's now suing for $20 million. and truly a magic moment in the major leagues last night. >> and casilla lifts it out towards right. jered weaver has no hits. >> the angels as you just heard. jered weaver, the first no-hitter of his career. no-hitting the minnesota twins. the second historic pitching performance. a perfect game thrown by phillip humber at seattle. april 21st. it happened when most of us were long long gone to sleep land. >> true that. >> thank god for videotape. >> uh-huh. >> it's going to be a big season. now, to the most emotional day yet in the john edwards' trial. his daughter couldn't take it. she fled the courtroom in tears. abc's bob woodruff was there. he joins us from greensboro north carolina, with all of the details. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning, george. this could be another dramatic day today. yesterday, it was about elizabeth edwards, who you know died of cancer about a year and a half ago. and a witness told the story about how she found out about this affair. and how damaging it really was. throughout the trial cate edwards has been her father's most visible supporter. but this was different. on the stand was christina reynolds, a former campaign staffer, and a close confidant of elizabeth edwards. and the question turned to this 2007 "national enquirer" story, as to edwards' affair with rielle hunter. edwards turned to his caught dadaughter. calling to her, cate kate. edwards put his head in his hands, as reynolds testified about a heated fight between the couple. a fight she said was triggered by the "enquirer" story. elizabeth was very upset, reynolds told jurors. she stormed off and collapsed into a ball in the parking lot. she screamed at her husband. you don't see me anymore. she took off her shirt and bra. edwards' attorney suggested it was the specter of the affair getting widespread attention in the media that led to elizabeth's breakdown. did you know she was mortified by the publicity? yes, reynolds replied. >> we see a person caught in quicksand after the affair. and the cover-up was it to keep his family intact? or was it about the presidential campaign? it's going to be one of the key questions. >> reporter: later in the afternoon, cate edwards returned to the courtroom, only to hear former campaign scheduler, matthew nelson testify about another heated and emotional fight her parents had. this time, in the car earlier that same day. she was pawing him in the backseat, nelson testified. saying elizabeth mockingly asked her husband, is this what you do in a car when you're together in new york city? nelson told the jury, john edwards encouraged elizabeth to calm down. asking she not do this in front of our friends. they're not our friends, nelson told, elizabeth replied. they are our staff. outside, edwards tried to console his daughter. >> i wish they had not mentioned your mom. in full view of a dozen cameras. you can say the most moving part of this trial is not the affect on john edwards or rielle hunter. this is about what has done to the family in that courtroom. and of course, his wife who died a year and a half ago. george? >> it sure does. let's bring in our legal analyst, dan abrams. let's talk about the testimony. as bob said, it shows a family being torn apart, especially the testimony from christina reynolds. but does it help the prosecution's case? >> it cuts both ways. the fact that elizabeth edwards got so upset about this the defense is going to use to its advantage. they're going to say look. see? this is why john edwards was trying to cover this up. this money was going to prevent that from happening. not campaign. not to protect his campaign. but to protect his personal life. and once she found out exactly what he feared happened. it does cut both ways. but what the prosecution is trying to do here is show the cronology of what happened then. that the rielle hunter was the fabric of the campaign. and there is no separating the campaign from his personal life. >> that's what the testimony of josh brumberger a personal aide to john edwards. he was fired on the spot for talking about the affair. >> and seemingly someone that doesn't have an interest in this. and does seem to be backing up the testimony of the youngs. andrew and cheri young, who are testified about how john edwards is orchestrating the cover-up. one of the issues is did john edwards know about the money? and you have him saying that john edwards was ordering a littal action committee to pay her health insurance. and john edwards was well aware of everything that was happening. that's very important. i think one of the most important witnesses in the case. >> dan abrams thanks very much. now, to the death of former nfl superstar, junior seau, and why it could be a warning to parents of teen athletes across the country. experts say it could be linked to head injuries from all of the hard hits he took on the field for all those years. abc's paula faris has more. >> reporter: good morning, robin. these traumatic brain injuries, affecting 1.5 million young athletes over the past decade according to the cdc. seau's death follows a number of high-profile professional athletes. this time, no suicide note. only a text message that said, i love you. a future nfl hall of famer and a father of three has apparently taken his own life. and this morning, his family is struggling to understand why. >> why you never telling me you're going? take me. take me. leave my son alone. >> reporter: pro football legend, junior seau was found dead wednesday morning by his girlfriend, after police say he shot himself in the chest in his oceanside, california home. those closest to the pro bowler, including his former teammates, say they didn't see it coming. >> we were there for you. we knew you were a superstar. we knew you were a super person. but come out and tell us you needed us. >> reporter: seau, who played in the league for 20 seasons, could be the third former nfl player to kill himself in the last 14 months. and five over the last seven years. many of the suicides experts believe, may be linked to repeated head injuries. sustained by playing a sport so violent, it's been described as being in a car crash. >> you can't take head injury, head impact out of football. even with the best helmet you're going to have a head that's moving quickly that stops suddenly. and that's a bad thing. >> reporter: in 2010 seau denied he was trying to commit suicide when he drove his suv off this cliff. he survived the plunge. but the crash came just hours after he was arrested for allegedly attacking his then-girlfriend. for those who knew seau best are remembering him as a leader not only on the field but in his community. >> i beg to god, please take me. take me. leave my son. but it's too late. too late. >> reporter: so tough to see a mother grieving for her child. just this morning, tmz reporting seau's family is not blaming football for his death. if you remember when dave duerson shot himself in the chest last february, he left a note for his family asking that his brain be studied. he had been suffering from a degenerative condition of the brain. it was eating at his brain. and he didn't know how to deal with it. >> thank you. knowing he shot himself, junior seau, in the chest, it makes you think -- >> there seems to be a link. one of the players that paula spoke of ray easterling another that shot himself two weeks ago. his widow says he too, suffered from depression and insomnia and dimension. and in shooting himself, again, he -- committing suicide, this is now going to turn a very bright light on this -- on this class-action lawsuit. if someone like junior seau is linked to this. >> a modern-day player. >> a modern-day player and a beloved one. junior seau never listed as having a concussion on an injury report throughout his career. and by the way, a bright light. he will be missed. >> love that guy. thanks, guys. now, to the private side of president obama. revealing portraits of him as a young man in love in his 20s, before he met michelle. abc's jake tapper has the story. >> reporter: here are the pictures of the old girlfriend we're hearing about for the first time. in a book excerpt in the brand-new "vanity fair." genevieve cook who barack obama met at a byob christmas party in 1983. where she was drinking bailey's irish cream from the bottle. in his memoir president obama wrote just a little about his time in new york city. >> the beauty the fifth, the noise and the excesses. >> reporter: but obama morphed a few relationships into one composite in the book. cook and obama moved in together in 1984. she wrote of their love in their journals. and the concern about how guarded and controlled he was. distance distance distance and wariness, she wrote. the sexual warmth is definitely there. but the rest has sharp edges. his warmth can be deceptive. he speaks sweet words that are open and trusting. there is that coolness. she tells him she loves him. his response, thank you. >> this is his girlfriend. they had a deep significant romance. and she felt she couldn't ultimately break through to him. >> reporter: "the new york times" jodi kantor wrote about the obamas' marriage, says this sounds like the same man 20 years later. >> he's so contained and reserved. the fact that few people in the white house seem to totally understand the experience of the presidency. and that seems like exactly the same person we hear about in these letters. >> reporter: young barack obama was trying to figure out just who he was. cook wrote of him balancing the tendency to be always the observer with how to affect change. when cook and obama broke up she wrote in her journal that obama's future wife was out there, somewhere waiting for him. she described this future wife as a wise, bubbly, strong, black lady. >> she had insights. how would you like to have every, single detail of your life in your 20s combed over like that. boy. >> i was just thinking relationships in our 20s. >> burn those diaries. >> thank you. now, to the major legal battle escalating over a tossed-out lottery ticket. josh brought this to us in the news yesterday. the woman who bought the ticket threw it out because she was told it wasn't any good. and another woman found it in the trash, cashed it in and got $1 million. who really is the rightful owner? a judge has weighed in. this is the follow-up, people. the fight is far from over. ryan owens has the story. >> reporter: it's the battle of the sharons. two arkansas women who share a name and a claim, to a lottery ticket worth $1 million. meet sharon duncan. this week, a judge ruled she should be the sharon who gets the $1 million, even though she tossed the winning ticket in the trash. it happened last summer. this sharon bought the ticket at this gas station in arkansas. the computer mistakenly scanned it as a loser. so, she threw it out. along comes the other sharon. sharon jones. she dug that losing ticket out of the garbage. arkansas allows people to take used tickets, go to the web and redeem small prizes. >> i was just putting in the points for -- i was going to get gifts for my grandkids for christmas and maybe eventually get enough points to get me a tv. >> reporter: well, she got a lot more than that. lottery officials gave her the big check. and she immediately put that $1 million to use. bought a new pickup truck. paid off credit cards. gave a lot to her kids. but then, along comes that other sharon again. she sued. and much to everyone's surprise, the judge sided with her. he says the sharon who already spent a lot of that jackpot needs to pay her the 1 million bucks. >> we're certainly disappointed. i have to admit, i'm a little surprised. >> reporter: the sharon who found the ticket is vowing to appeal. and legal experts say she may have a good case. >> it's a crazy, crazy story. now, we have people fighting over who owns the trash. >> i think justice will prevail. >> reporter: but for now, the judge here says finders keepers doesn't always apply. for "good morning america," ryan owens, abc news arkansas. >> give them both 1 million bucks. let's get down to sam who is in dallas on our wonderful a affiliate affiliate, aa. >> let's get to the boards. on the severe storm side we had about 150 reports of severe weather during the day yesterday. this is where the storms will light up today. kansas city, omaha, chicago, detroit. even as close as buffalo. you are involved in some of these storms today. and there's a little south texas involvement, as well. here's where the big, cold air gets shoved away. coastal areas in new england will be working with cooler temperatures. we hope to get places like d.c. into the 80s. to some of these kids. but my coach had hit that pitch before. turning data into useful answers. we're 78,000 people looking out for 70 million americans. that's health in numbers. unitedhealthcare. no... ♪ uncover stronger, younger looking skin. [ laughs ] ♪ >> announcer: right now breaking news. good morning i'm eric thomas. we continue to follow breaking news in petaluma where three federal agents have been injured while serving warrants it happened this morning near the washington square shopping center one of the injured men was rushed by helicopter to the hospital. we're told the three agents' injuries are not life threatening. there's one this custody. the warrants involve an ongoing criminal investigation. let's see if the traffic is still affected. >> you still want to avoid the surrounding streets of south mcdowell between east washington and maria. southbound 10 slow 11 miles per hour on the waze traffic app. it is very heavy down to cost stainia. i wanted to take you -- to the bay bridge toll backed up past the 8 overcrossing san mateo bridge has a new accident westbound slowing dumbarton bridge possible alternate. >> when we come back, mike is going to tell us when we'll see sprinkles even mist around the bay other this morning the most organized east of sea ranch heading towards cloverdale. you can see the system sliding southeast. steady rain north bay through noon sca i don't know what happened. she's on the floor dying. >> the shocking 911 call you hear right there. the husband online. the husband is accused of strangling his wife. her family taking his side. but he says spray tanning is to blame. and supermodel linda evangelista evangelista. now, she is asking salma hayek's husband for $50,000 a month. the tanning twist. this woman is accused of bringing her 5-year-old inside a tanning booth. she is battling in court to keep her child right now. and the salon owner says she goes to the tanning salon 20 times a month. >> it looks like that from her appearance. let's get to the case of the miami real estate developer, charged with strangling his wife. he says an allergic reaction to a spray tan is to blame for her death. chris cuomo has all the latest on this. >> this is interest. you have death by spouse or an accident. that's typical criminal confrontation. hold on. you've never heard a defense describe an accident this way before. >> maria. come on, wake up. >> reporter: that's the sound of eleanor koffman's husband, adam screaming on a 911 call. she was found dead on the couple's bathroom floor back in november 2007. her husband, adam a prominent real estate developer said he awoke to find her there. a horrible accident. but a year and a half after her death, the coroner had a different theory. >> her death resulted by a mechanical force applied to her neck. >> reporter: in other word a homicide. he was charged with second-degree murder accused of strangling the mother of their two children. prosecutors played the tape of the 911 call made the night of her death, 23 minutes long. you can hear adam hysterically asking for help. >> she's not breathing. >> reporter: emotions so raw, it caused one person to faint in the courtroom. and may have sowed the seeds of the defense. >> he loved his wife more than anyone in the world. never would harm her. >> reporter: instead of attacking the prosecution's case and questioning what motive there was for murder. the defense has a defense of their own. eleanor had a reaction to a spray tan she had gotten the day before. >> if the defendant and his team of lawyers have experts to actually back up this defense, it may play well. >> she collapsed. we know she affixuated. but we don't know why any of that happened. and certainly, that could have been caused by this exposure to the tanner. >> reporter: bizarre to be sure. but even more bizarre to some is the fact that eleanor's family and friends believe he is innocence. >> i've known that boy since he was born. there's no way, no way, he could hurt that woman. he loved her so much. >> reporter: they will be called as defense witnesses after the trial begins on monday. >> if the victim's family is supporting mr. kaufman, then the prosecution is going to have to work doubly hard to show that there's a motive here as to why he would want his wife dead. >> chris and i are going to bring "gma" legal analyst dan abrams into the conversation. have you ever heard a defense like this? >> nope. never heard a spray tan defense. this is a comparatively strong defense. compared to most cases that go to trial, the fact that the prosecutors have basically, a medical examiner coming in and saying he believes that the victim was choked. a year and a half later. but that seems like all that they have. and yet, the defense does have quite a bit to work with here. >> you bring up some excellent points. chris, the death takes place in 2007. the husband is not arrested until 2009. here it is 2012 and it's finally going to trial. why is everything taking so long? >> the timing seems to suggest a lack of preparation on the part of the prosecution. but let's look at it on the other side. it took a long time because cases take time. they're a busy unit down there. there was a lot of extra investigation being done in this. many extra tests to rule out other types of scenarios. the defense will offer, why didn't you look into our theory? why didn't you test for arsenic and other things that might have caused an allergic reaction? this is a case about what is not known. that gets tricky when you go into a courtroom. what the prosecution has is sustained pressure which sounds like choking to most. the defense has a creative theory of what else it could be. the defense has no reason to offer any explanation. but this one certainly has people intrigued. >> and the defense also has an enhanced picture now. they're saying why didn't prosecutors bring this to us? the defense's theory she had this reaction near a magazine rack. and something happens to her physically. they say, look at the wall next to the magazine rack. and they highlight it. and there is what looks like yellow fluid on the wall there. they say, why didn't this ever come to light before? and this supports our theory that she had this kind of reaction after the fact. >> an enhanced photo. and playing on the unknown. they didn't take the magazines into evidence. playing on the unknown. >> eleanor's family is firmly standing behind him. how does that play? >> huge, i believe. why? this comes down to people. there will be jurors who sit and make this determination. who has more reason to care and want justice here than the victim's family. they back him. they're going to testify for him. that helps. does that matter legally? no. but this is a human process. >> and i think they're going to have a hard time here. you talk about the fact that the key evidence is as chris points out, the medical examiner. they have dna they think is crucial. but on a whole, a lot more cases go to trial without as much evidence as this one. >> but death by spray tan? this woman right here. you were great. you play a great cynthia mcfadden. >> you do. >> thanks, guys. >> we're going to talk about that in a moment. so many young girls dream about becoming a ballerina. now, a new documentary called "first position" is pulling back the curtain on all of the sacrifice to make that dream come true. and cynthia is going to go inside that world. >> reporter: like most little girls, i had a moment to be a ballerina. i had a chance last week to meet some of the very inspiring young people, with the talent and the dedication to pursue careers as professional dancers, despite staggering odds. it's ballet "thunderdome," with more than 5,000 of the world's top young dancers competing. but only a handful will make it out with the coveted prize. full scholarships to the most prestigious ballet schools. the intense journey is called the youth america grand prix. the elite of the elite. facing off against each other. some of them not even teenagers yet. >> i love ballet so much. i love it so much. >> reporter: it's all chronicled in a new documentary called "first position," by bess cartman. >> i wouldn't have made it. >> reporter: because? >> yes because i'm getting ready for performances. >> reporter: tell me what it feels like to be able to do that with your body. >> well, when i'm performing on stage, i don't really feel anything. it just feels like i'm floating. >> reporter: it's a journey that began at an orphanage, in war-torn sierra leone. >> i found a magazine of a ballet dancer. i saved it. and i thought, if i ever got adopted, i would become like this. >> reporter: when michaela was adopted, it wasn't long until they saw her talent. >> she was able to mimic all of the dancing. >> reporter: that brings us back to the youth america grand prix. just days before her final performance, michaela has a devastating problem. >> i -- my achilles started hurting really bad. i shouldn't be competing. >> reporter: but there are no second chances here. so, three days later, the competition begins. and michaela is there with the others. >> i don't understand how i could have gone on with that injury. >> reporter: you were taking a real calculated risk. >> yeah, i was. >> reporter: you could have -- >> i could have ruined my career. >> reporter: it was a gamble. >> it was. >> reporter: a gamble that paid off. as it turned out, michaela is now dancing at a prestigious ballet school. is there no going back for you?
