Slick roads are being blamed for a crash that injured two california Highway Patrol officers in the south bay yesterday. They were getting a disabled vehicle towed last night when a driver lost control and rearended their squad car on 680 theyre bare yes, sir sa road in san jose. Both officers were inside the vehicle. They were treated at the hospital, and theyre now home. The driver was not hurt. A San Mateo County sheriffs deputy is recovering after being injured north of santa cruz during what may have been a federal drug smuggling bust. The Sheriffs Office will only say he was hurt while assisting an outside agency, and he will survive. I. C. E. , the immigration and customs service, released a statement about the incident, saying, an operation was under way involving a drug smuggling boat and, quote, special agents along with officers from the San Mateo CountySheriffs Office are on site and have detained three individuals believed to be associated with the boat. Abc7 news spoke to the Mountain View man who stopped to help pull two victims out of a burning car after it crashed into a tree. It happened just before 6 00 last night on central expressway east of north bernardo avenue. Kevin lee was driving home from a basketball game when he saw the crashed car in the median and its front hood was on fire. Lee said he stopped, got out of his car, and called out to others for help. Police officers told my son that your dads a hero. He did a great thing. I wasnt so much that but more of an example that we have to help out other people when theyre in trouble. The Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety said both the male driver and passenger were killed. Its investigating the cause of the crash. Santa clara county deputies are still searching for two jail inmates who escaped. Rogelio chavez and Laron Campbell were among four men who escaped. This weekend, Santa Clara County granted access. Live in the newsroom with more. According to sheriff laurie smith, inmates may have spent lots of time planning their escape and cutting through bars to make it happen. Only on abc7 news, she showed us the jail cell where these men were able to break out. This is a look from just outside the second story cell. Deputies have since dispatched k9s to track the scent of the two men who are still on the run. They were among 20 other men who were housed in this jail pod. Investigators have still not found the tool used to cut through metal. These are pictures of the iron bars they hacked away. And you can see they also pried open exterior metal panels. The cut is behind this plywood. But basically what they did is they cut out these two bars. So they cut here and here, and weve recovered these bars. Reporter sheriff smith believes the men have an Extensive Network of contacts in the bay area, and shes hoping people are not helping them stay on the run. She said aiding escapees is a serious crime. The Sheriffs Department has put out a 20,000 reward to information that will lead to the capture of chavez and campbell.
