wind strong enough to toss an shuttle on a parking garage shut down the airport. >> tonight it is a mess across the midwest. they have not confirmed it was a tornado that did all of that damage at lambert field. >> whatever it was it was terrifying and it was destructive. debris is scattered across runways. powerful wind gusts blew the roof off one terminal and shattered half of the windows in another. the winds were so powerful they lifted a shuttle bus to the second floor of a garage. this mother was picking up her husband and acted fast to protect her baby. >> the sky went black and the wind picked the car up an inch or two and dropped it and blew out the windows. it happened real fast. a piece of plastic came in and hit her. i threw the phone and grabbed her out of the carseat and put her in my lab. >> four people were taken to hospital with minor injuries, mostly from flying glass. >> almost instantaneously the windows started blowing out. en this the next thing we know we saw poles falling and they told us to go to a bunker and then the lights were going out. very scary. we have earthquakes where i am, but this beats it, let me tell you. >> two planes were stranded on the tarmac because of the debris. i spoke to a passenger on board that plane tonight. >> the winds started picking up. the lights in the airplane started to flicker. we just started moving along the tarmac, i guess. we went between 5 and 10 feet away from the connector thing ear. >> all planes flying in and out of st. louis were diverted or canceled leaving a lot of passengers stranded tonight. investigators have now pinpointed the defect that caused a hole in a southwest airline jet earlier this month. passengers saw the sky when the 737 tore open in midair. and today's findings are raising new concerns. lisa amin gulezian joins us live. lisa? >> carolyn, investigators believe the problems may have started 15 years ago on an assembly line where the rivets were created incorrectly. abc news learned investigators are focusing their attention on rivets. the tiny pins that hold pieces of the plane together. sources say on that southwest 737 that ripped open, the rivets holding parts of the plane's fuselage together failed because they didn't fit perfectly. the rivet holes themselves may have been sized incorrectly back on the assembly line. >> they were, over time with the flexing of and expansion of compressing the airplane's few sill lodge, those holes would microscopically expand or change. >> and in this plane's case, the seem tore creating a gaping five-foot hole. oxygen masks dropped and the pilot dove to a lower altitude. >> the masks came down and it was frightening. >> as a result, boeing ordered sections of similar 737's worldwide. nearly 600 total. a third required inspections immediately. and of those, five have slight cracks. all are southwest jets and sources say all five were built around the same time as the plane that came apart. >> the cracks are along this joint here where the two pieces lap. that crack will become worse and worse and worse with every pressurization. >> passengers we spoke with have mixed reactions about the latest findings. >> we take chances and we fly anywhere and there can be problems that occur occasionally. but i still believe in the system. >> they should have found it earlier. they are not strict enough on the regulation. >> it shouldn't be an issue at all. >> they should have been taken out of service until they investigate them. >> the investigation is still going on. and in fact the plane that ripped apart has been patched and is expected to go back into service. live at sfo, lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. >> lisa, thanks very much. this santa clara mother has been arrested for leaving her toddler alone in her suv while she gambled. police arrested 25-year-old maria sasson for child endangerment outside the casino. a security guard called police after noticing the little girl strapped into her carseat and locked into the vehicle. sasson was arrested on felonien sanangerment charges. the parents of a two-year-old boy was killed after a tree fell on a pick up truck filed a wrongful death lawsuit. it accuses a neighbor in the city of san jose of negligence. san jose rejected a suit that asks for unspecified damages. in san francisco, 450 financial district customers lost power during a 20-minute blackout earlier tonight. pg&e says they are not sure what caused the outage, but apparently something happened near sacramento and davis streets. witnesses told abc7 that they heard an explosion. pg&e has not confirmed that, but the manhole cover was not displaced. here is a number to keep in mind. 750,000 commuters a day on average used the san francisco transit system. but their means of transportation could be in jeopardy. members of the union authorized a strike if negotiations with the city now in their second month don't go as they hope. jerry is here with the latest on the story. >> today's authorization by the muni's operator's union is merely the latest in a series of incidents that may be putting the union in a negative public leet. >> friday's news that local 250a authorized the negotiators to strike struck some as bold, especially given recent bad publicity. an operator caught on camera ordering passengers on a bus. and other was caught texting while driving. and twice cell phone cameras caught malfunctioning doors wide open as the trains rolled on. supervisor scott wiener witnessed one of the door malfunctions, but they say the union hurt itself with the decision to a strike. >> to authorize a strike is not productive. >> union workers decline to talk on camera. but the union secretary when asked about the publicity said on the phone, quote, we already have two black eyes and a broken nose. it doesn't make any difference. charles good year, a spokesman for muni says the city is hoping to scale back muni's annual budget between $25 and $50 million. >> we hope the union leadership will join us in addressing the economic realities that everyone in san francisco is facing now. >> public sympathy doesn't seem to be with the union whose members earn an average of just over $100,000 per year. >> in a recession time it is hard to stand up for as much pay as you got during the boom years. every other city employee union has been taking pay cuts and has been increasing pension contributions and really chipping in to make sure we can address our budget problems. twu is the only union that hasn't done that. >> now by law, muni drivers cannot strike, but the union says that's up for legal interpretation. meanwhile, the city attorney dennis herrera says he would take action to prevent any work stoppage. to syria now and it was the bloodiest day yet in the month-long uprising there. 75 people were killed when syrian security forces fired bullets and teargas to thousands across the country. president obama called it an outrageous use of violence and said it must end now. they called on them to allow peaceful demonstrations. the army will withdraw from the city of misrata. they will leave it to the rebels to decide their fate. john mccain was there and he is urging the white house to increase u.s. support for the rebels. mccain said the first step would be to declare them libya's official government. but the white house said it is up to libyans to decide who their leaders are. a lot more to bring you this friday night. an overdue honor for one man's sacrifice. a world war ii veteran has finally been laid to rest. >> military honors. what makes this story so unusual is he died in world war ii. abc7's vic lee reports tonight on the 68-year gap between his death and burial. >> today was the end of a long 68-year mystery. the day army private first class simms came home with full military honors. his final resting place, the cemetery where his mother and father are buried. >> he is back home where he belongs with his family. 1938 and there he is. >> lily fishman brought her yearbook. they grew up with him. >> i went from the first grade all the way through high school with mervin. >> they both said the same thing, he was a nice young man. and like many of the young men, the 23-year-old enlisted in the army air force. in april of 1943 his cargo plane crashed over the hump. the term pilots used for the dangerous 500-mile route that crisscrossed the jagged ridges of the himalayas. in 2003, a private expedition searching for mia's found the wreckage and simms' bones. the man who lead the expedition said by luck his guide found a small piece of aluminum. >> i looked at it and here was the aircraft data plate. it was bent up. but this is the most important identifier you can find. >> reporter: two months ago they notified his next of kin that they finally identified him through a dna sample. she is simms' niece and never knew her uncle. >> do you recognize him from the picture? >> oh yes. >> reporter: today she got to know him better through his friends like evelyn, simms' first girl friend. >> he was a wonderful guy. didn't have him around long enough when they took him into the service. >> i think the community got what they needed as well as us as a family got what we needed. it is a perfect day. >> a day celebrated with sadness and gratitude. most never knew private simms, but today everyone here was his friend. vic lee, abc7 news. an elaborate tatoo has lead to a gang member's murder conviction. anthony garcia was found guilty of killing a man. the case went cold until an investigator saw the tatoo and recognized details from the crime scene including christmas lights on the liquor store's roof and a bent street lamp. garcia faces 65 years to life in prison. san rafael is the home of marin county's first electric car charging station. two charge points opened in the c street garage to encourage the use of electric vehicles. there will be no cost initially for the electricity beyond the regular fee for parking in that garage. >> this is just the beginning. this is one partnership forming. we are expecting to install other charging stations around the county. >> that partnership includes the marin transportation authority and a new utility called marin clean energy. they were provided at no charge for column technologies. it used funds sprinkles possibly tonight. a slight chance of showers on saturday, and we are looking at partly cloudy conditions sunday afternoon. here is the satellite and the radar. this disturbance went through and a few sprinkles reported, and we basically saw some snow developing in the higher elevations earlier this evening with the disturbance. this system here is riding in on the jet stream. the moist flow continues across california. with this in mind there is a real clear cut forecast. we will see a few clouds, and tomorrow quite a bit of cloud cover and maybe a shower or two and really light if we get anything. and then sunday 6:23 around sunrise time. sunrise services may see a little drizzle or light shower activity developing. just keep this in mind as you head out the door on sunday. by the time you head into sunday afternoon, just a lot of sunshine out there and a few high clouds and an improving situation for sunday afternoon. if you are traveling on east you are sunday, 46 in tahoe. they will be seeing scattered snow showers there. 62 in yosemite. down south in los angeles, 67 degrees and warm in palm springs, 83 and sunny. overnight look for temperatures in the 40s, and 63 redwood city, palo alto,64 for mountain view. coastal areas, sweater weather. mid50s only. downtown san francisco, 59 degrees. in the north bay, the temperatures are going to remain in the mid50s
