secretary of state hillary clinton just finished a speech in san francisco. the focus, diplomacy and technology sprinkled with a little stumping. this was hillary clinton's first visit since she became secretary of state. >> there were no direct plugs for candidates in the november election, but the secretary wrapped up her speech with a little politics. amy hollyfield is here with the story. >> at the end, a plea for help at the beginning. secretary of state hillary clinton wants people here to help with diplomacy. she is asking for ideas and says she is ready to listen. >> she was definitely in friendly territory. the commonwealth club has invited her to speak several times before, but she has been busy. >> this is only the third place in the united states i have spoken since i became secretary of state. >> but she said now is the appropriate time to have a conversation. and then she made her pitch to this crowd. diplomacy needs technology. >> and i know there are a million ideas that are born every day here. if you have a good idea, we willisen. >> not only does she want ideas, she also encouraged the crowd to participate in public and private partnerships. >> we recently launched a new mentoring program called tech women that pairs accomplished women in silicon valley with counterparts in communities around the world. >> the crowd loved it. >> we created the ideas that inning chaed the world. it is awesome to know the government is behind that. >> about 1500 people came to hear her speak. most of them women. >> i can't think of anything i would rather be doing. >> she answered questions about world issues such as the situation in afghanistan. but a high light came when ellie asked her about the environment. she talked about conservation and used the question to address the upcoming election. >> i think people running for office should be asked to explain their position on what they are going to do. >> she covered a lot of ground with that question. in the same answer she said she is competent that president obama's policies will be effective, and suggested people have some patients. dan? >> amy, thanks. clinton's predecessor, former secretary of state condoleezza rice met with president obama at the white house to discuss national security issues. rice spoke with cnn just before the meeting. >> it is frequently done that former cabinet secretaries go and particularly on the foreign policy side and see the sitting president. i am looking forward to it and what is on his mind. >> the two men in the owe var office -- in the oval office for about a half hour. he gave the president and his daughters copies of the new medical are what. and rice says she has been consulted a couple times bisect clinton. former president bill clinton made a care of campaign appearances in southern california today. he is just one of the heavy hitters visiting california in the final push before the november 2nd election. tonight he appeared at ucla with gubernatorial candidate jerry brown and gavin newsom. the former president focused on the struggling economy. >> i agree with jerry. he is the only politician in america i heard say this, except me, that as horrible as this is, if we learn the right lessons from it, if we come out of it, we will be stronger than ever. >> earlier, mr. clinton spoke in orange county in support of the democratic congresswoman. they will be in the area sunday for san jose. >> you will have to make tough choices with spending cut, and certainly she will be working in a bi-partisan manner. >> former alaska governor and vice presidential candidate sarah palin was in sacramento today. part of her swing through california. although palin has noten dored a candidate in the gubernatorial race she made it clear she is backing meeting whit man. she will be the speaker at a committee rally in anaheim. she spoke in san jose last night. and tea party members are holding a rally this weekend in the bay area. the pleasanton tea party had a kickoff dinner at ddickies barbecue pit. they will turn out at the alameda fairgrounds. conservative candidates are scheduled to speak there. >> tonight a disabled man is without the especially equiped van he needs to get around because a bunch of jerks stole it. but they didn't just rip off a vehicle. lisa amin go legion says they stole his independence. >> life hasn't been fair for darnell. a car crash left him quadriplegic. but three years ago things changed for the better because of a van like this. >> it gave me freedom to get out. i go to the baseball game. >> the 49-year-old calls it his lifeline, but this week that connection was cut. his 19905 chevy was stolen. at around 1:45 on monday morning, those video cameras caught three men driving right up to darnell dangerfield stopping and then breaking in. >> when they got in the van, they didn't just get in. i know they messed around for 10 minutes, so they had to be searching to see what was inside. >> inside was his wheelchair and foot rest. the pedals lift his feet up because he doesn't have the strength to hold them up himself. his feet are not the only things dragging. >> i have no plans. i have no van. >> depression is setting in. >> i am super angry they would pick on somebody disabled. >> i am afraid he may become more withdrawn and reluctant to go out with us. he thought was a burden prior to him having that. >> even the alameda police admit someone stealing a quadriplegic van is a first. >> if this van was targeted because of the equipment, recovering it man for a rape at a complex where several women have been attacked. william yokum is suspected it in the attack at the park regency apartments outside walnut creek. she a resident of the complex, and police say he knew the woman attacked. authorities are still looking for the man responsible for an attack on october 2nd. they say the description of that attack does not match yokum. there there has been five attacks since june at that complex. this 22-year-old berkeley man has been charged with three of them. at least six churches in san francisco have been hit by burglars on a recent crime spree. somebody stole last sunday's collection money from st. george orthodox church. st. francisy miss ask you palet church has been targeted five times since august. >> i think it is a sign of our times, the desperation that people feel and also people being -- knowing that a church in vulnerable, and that many of us don't have security systems. >> they have stolen laptops, musical instruments and cash and checks and even food from the congregation. police do not think the break ins are connected. one lane of the bridge will be closed until sunday until they make more emergency repairs. they discovered a 10-inch crack in a beam during a routine inspection on wednesday. the crews have been working since then to patch up the crack. when they are done, the beam will be stronger than it degrees. it was 21 degrees cooler than yesterday. it was 31 degrees cooler than watsonville where you went from the 90s to the 60s today. here is what it looks like, 50s along the coastline and 60s along the the bay and inland. still 76 in antioch. foggy near the coast. partly cloudy for your saturday. and you are looking at a slight chance of showers on sunday. this afternoon, southly wind flow, fog hugging the coastline from san francisco south: that contributed to our cooler weather. this is going to take us to saturday and sunday, particularly inland. tomorrow morning waking up to foggy conditions and locally inland most areas in the 50s. north bay valleys dropping to the upper 40s. as you look at the pacific satellite picture, we have a lot of cloudiness over the pacific. where we are really paying close attention to is the upper level low that is developing. this low is going to start to tap into some moisture. and over the weekend we will in the some changes. beginning on saturday there are higher clouds that start to move through. it is giving us milky skies, and by sunday the low is tracking across the monterey bay and heading southeast. you will start to see some green here. wrap around moisture could bring in a few showers to the bay area on sunday. for the sierra nevada, we are talking about snow. and if you are heading to lake tahoe, it will be rain and thunderstorm poe step shall for your sunday. but most higher passes will be impacted by the snow on sunday. highs for your saturday under dry conditions in the south bay, cupertino and 78 and on the peninsula, a mild day. 72 in millbrae and menlo park and coastal areas, you actually will come up a few degrees from the upper 50s of today to the low 60s as we are expecting a little more sunshine near the coast. daily city 61 degrees and downtown san francisco 65. and in the north bay, anywhere from 62 at stinson beach to 80 degrees in cloverdale and calistoga. the east bay communities, you will see the mix of sun and cloudiness as well. 68 in oakland and 73 castro valley. head inland and the temperatures are right where you should be, 81 livermore and 79 in concord. and monterey bay, 67 in monterey and up to 74 in salinas. if you are heading to the half moon bay art and pumpkin festival, a nice looking weekend for that. 61 on saturday and dry, but sunday, could be a
