Live at the San Rafael Fire Department where crews responded to the scene of a fallen tree that killed a man today. Leslie . Fire officials talked about it as being like being struck by lightning. Its a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time for a 77yearold man who was just out gardening in his yard. This 75foot tall eucalyptus tree cracked and toppled not onto the house, but on to a man out in his back yard watering and digging. The 911 call came in at 3 20 friday afternoon. The owner of the property was found under the tree. Pinned under the tree. Pinned under the tree. Unconscious. We were able to remove him from under the tree. Attempted some resuscitation, but werent successful. 77yearold david lumbar died. Shocked neighbors and friends came through the gated driveway. Groves of eucalyptus trees are everywhere and in every yard. The trees are among the biggest we look up at them and wonder. But its kind of, kind of terrifying. That one could fall over and kill someone like that. Tom bear pointed out the leaning trees in his yard and the remnants of one that came crashing down on his driveway during a winter rain storm. Narrowly missing their cars. Coroner investigators say the fallen tree had started leaning toward the lombards house over the last few months in san rafael, im leslie brinkley, abc7 news. The water is back on in an oakland neighborhood where a pipe broke yesterday, but the cleanup and repairs continue. The 16inch water main burst created a huge sinkhole on montana street near diamond avenue. Abc7 news was in the dimond heights neighborhood. Several homes were damaged and it collapsed a sinkhole into the street which has been patched up. The street is opened, but east bay still has work to do on the pipe. We first alerted people about the water main break, with a push alert from the abc7 news app. You can get updates on breaking news as it happens. Oakland police are looking for a gunman who shot and killed a man just after 9 00 last night on 11th avenue in the clinton neighborhood. Police tell us he had several gunshot wounds. At this time they do not have a description of the suspect. It was the second shooting in oakland last night. Another man was shot in the leg on foothill boulevard an hour before. He is expected to survive. Police have not said if the shootings are connected. One man is dead after a shooting in San Francisco last night. It happened on lobo street in the ocean view neighborhood. The victim is a 68yearold man. Police tell us a 65yearold man is suspected in the shooting, but have not announced any arrests. A person crossing the street in sonoma crossing the street in sonoma in a crosswalk suffered serious injuries in a hitandrun crash at broadway and andrew. Witnesses rushed to help the victim, who is expected to survive. Police are searching for a gray or silver sedan with a shattered windshield. Possibly a mitsubishi eclipse or pontiac grand am. A man has been arrested in connection with a hitandrun crash near concord. That left a horse with severe injuries. Today, the chp said 32yearold casey norado was arrested after officers received tips from the public. Officers say on october 4th, he slammed into the back of a horse trailer and then left the scene. The horse, named chance, was not initially expected to survive. Chance did recover. But can never be ridden again. A car crash created a big mess in santa clara. Take a look at this police are investigating how a car hit a fire hydrant and then ended up inside a restaurant this morning at the intersection of homestead and woodhams road. You can see the water gushing high into the air and the car inside a stuffed pizza restaurant. A car crashed into a building in redwood city this morning. The picture shows the massive hole created by the suv. The driver had minor injuries and was taken to the hospital. Police have not said what caused the crash. Happening tonight, neighbors in santa cruz will hold a vigil for a man killed by police last weekend. Police say shawn art was armed with a metal rake. They say he was pounding on the door of a house saying he was going to kill the people inside. Officers fa errs taised him fir then when that was determined not to be effective, officers shot and killed him. Tonights vigil starts on pacific avenue near water and front in santa cruz. Today activists remembered andy lopez, the santa rosa teenager killed by a police officer. He was shot to death three years ago today, while carrying a replica assault rifle. Activists at the lopez memorial plan to protest the recent promotion of the officer who killed lopez. The prayer vigil and kmen ration started at andys park at 3 00 p. M. New ramps to Treasure Island opened to drivers for the first time today, part of a planned expansion as crews get ready to build 8,000 new homes on the island. Abc7 News Reporter lisa amin is live with more. The new ramps are just behind me. The big difference will be for drivers coming toward the city. The exit for Treasure Island will be on the far right of the bay bridge instead of the far left. Once you exit, you can turn right to head to Treasure Island or left to get to the coast guard facilities on Yerba Buena Island. Drivers leaving the island, going back to the city will have an easier time merging with traffic. Theres a longer acceleration ramp to make for a smoother merge. The reason for the new ramps is really for safety. Transportation Officials Say the tight turns and quick merges were challenging for drivers. This project cost 98 million. Abc7 news was 0 at the Highland Villas on hayward boulevard for the dedication of a large mosaic. The piece of art has been installed at the court yard at the development now under construction. The builder handselected the students for the project and they spent four months creating the mural. We lost our Ceramic Program at hayward high school. I saw this opportunity to give the kids something that we wouldnt normally have the budget to do. And it wasnt just a dedication, attendees also had a shot at a raffle to raise more money for art education. You are busy getting ready for after the gail.
