companions held captive in tehran. an early morning nightclub shooting in san francisco renews the debate over whether the city needs to clamp down on a night spot. the miners in chili arel chile are months in iranian captivity. after her release she said she was only a third free because her fiancee and another friend are still imprisoned. we are in oakland where showered and shourd and friends are gathering. >> sarah shourd is on a mission to personally see to the release of her fiancee and best friend. >> shane and josh helped me get through prison. if it wasn't for them i wouldn't be sitting here today. >> in a strong but shaky voice sarah shourd asked for help during her first public appearance in the play area. since the release from an iranian prison her fiancee and shane bower and friend josh vit tal are still being held. >> i am not free. i can't go on with my life. my life will not resume until shane and josh with are with me. the only point of my existence is to speak for them, to be a voice for them. >> it's really time for them to come home. it's time for them to be free. time for them to stop suffering unnecessarily unnecessarily. >> the 3 uc berkeley graduates were accused of spying. shourd was released after 14 months in solitary confinement for what the government calls humanitarian reasons. abbas mamalani call the release purely political. >> these people are being held for political purposes. they will be released either when the regime gets something it wants or can escort a political point it wants. >> he does think letter writing campaigns like this one where friends and family are writing personal notes to bower and vital will help secure their freedom. the more people that get involved the better. the doctor says the campaign needs to go global more countries need to get involved especially in europe to put the pressure on iran. >> thank you lisa. there's been another shooting at a san francisco nightclub. a man was shot and critically wounded just after midnight. the club is on indiana street in the city's neighborhood. the police chief says he is working with city lull hall and entertainment district to talk about the problem. >> we have a problem. shootings are down still nightclubs we continue to have difficulties and it continues to illustrate why it is important for us to find a better solution. >> police are searching for the suspect and still investigating the motive behind the shootings. in july a man was shot and killed outside of the nightclub south of at and t park. they prompted therm to terminate their lease a man was killed four others wounded on base street. the owners voluntarily closed their club after that shooting. >> they narrowly escaped the man who tried to kidnap him. this happened yesterday where a 10-year-old girl and 5-year-old sister were walking their dog around 4:00 p.m. that's when they say a man threatened to kill their family members and tried to grab the 5-year-old little girl. he's described as a white male with a gray goatee and he was missing a tooth on the upper left side of his mouth. driving an older model jeep four-door with tinted windows and possible damage to the left headlight headlight. >> meg whitman's campaign is calling on democratic rival jerry brown to apologize personally for an offense ivory mark made by one of his campaign aids. the camp wants brown to identify the aid who called whitman a whore. the comment was recorded on the voice mail of the los angeles police union after brown failed to hang up the phone. brown and whitman were competing for the endorsement. he issued a public apology for the remark but whitman's camp wants more. >> a spokesman issued a statement that says after spending months avoiding his 40 year political record now jerry brown is continuing to insult the voters of california by avoiding taking responsible for his own actions and the actions of his campaign staff. california just approved budget already looks like trouble. that's because so much of the budget governor schwarzenegger just signed into law is based on deaf stit spending and wishful thinking. it is built on assumptions the money in the state hopes to get. it includes anticipating billions of dollars more in federal funding and increased tax revenue not a shower thing. many people who depend on government funds for assistance there may still be dark days ahead. a man who's son has been stuck in a chilean mine for more than 2 months says family members can now smile. cheers erupted after a drill broke through in their cavern more than 2,000 feet under ground creating a shaft wide enough for a specially designed escape elevator to pass through. the story from diane alviar. >> this drill rig completed the tunnel that will become a lifeline for 33 chilean miners. they have been trapped half a mile down since august 5th. that's 623 days they have been buried alive. next comes the hardest part. >> they should be certified with x-rays the seal process. >> cameras should be lowered in the shaft to check for lose rocks. they will line part of it with mass i have steel tubes to prevent rock falls. a rescue coordinator and paramedic will be lowered down to help. the men will be raised one at a time. first the most skilled in case there's problems along the way. then the wakest and sickest then the rest of the miners. the area they are breaking through is not big enough for the rescue capsule and they will have to enlarge it with dynamite dynamite. when they finally see the light of day will be authorities say they have put out a fire on a ferry carrying hundreds of people. an explosion on the upper deck triggered that fire. the ferry was in the bull tick sea between germany and denmark. half a dozen rescue ships helped rescue the 249 people on board. police say 3 people were flown to hospitals by by helicoptershelicopters. they are trying to keep the ferry from spilling 170 tons of fuel. hungary's premiere says a wall of a reservoir that burst flooded several towns with toxic waste is showing larger cracks than is very likely to collapse. he described that situation as dramatic. the town which sits next to the reservoir and was badly damaged in monday's flood was evacuated early today. at least 7 people died in more than 120 people were injured when a corner of the metals plant reservoir gave way and up to 184 million gallons of toxic waste flooded the towns in western hungary. beatles fans worldwide are coming together to celebrate john lennon's 70th birthday. his widow yoko own no said he dreaded turning 40 but thinking of 70 made him smile. with the celebrations happening around the world in his honor. abc's dan harris reports where new york fans are marking across the bay area, but a little bit of fog developing just off the coast. this will get right near the coast overnight tonight. we will keep it in your forecast. still coined of cool in the north bay but mid to upper 40s. extreme north day locations cloverdale 77. 56 san francisco. touch of fog there by tomorrow morning. inland locations anti ok 5 -- antioch. we have high pressure keeping this to the north of us from time to time we may see a few high clouds, a break off of this cold front to the north. still a delightful day. as we get into monday and tuesday that is definitely when offshore winds will be with us. fog forecast you can see it developing just near the coast inland locations will be clear. for late week if as festivities tomorrow another delightful day with traffic jam, allen. the show just ended. we are hearing it's taking an hour to get out of the marina. it is definitely jammed. but the blue angels have a lot of happy customers. and if you stayed home today to watch football and you missed the show lucky you we have video of the impressive show and all of their exciting moves. the show was especially appreciated this year. if you remember it was canceled last year because of fog they had perfect weather today. there are people in san francisco who don't like the blue angels who complain their too loud or people aren't fond of the military but we heard no complaints. >> so excited about the blue angels my heart is racing. it's just the best. >> something good for the kids to bring the kids to see our military put on a show. >> something different, you know. you don't see in regular days. quite interesting and amazing. >> my first time seeing him so it's exciting. my boyfriend drug me down here and the tricks are amazing how close very friendly town. so friendly they never have to buy a drink. they will be performing again tomorrow at 3:00. they are estimating a million people are going to be in the city through out the whole for more foot patrols. short sarah shourd gathered with close friends and family in oakland today to talk about what steps they need to take to help win the freedom of her fiancee shane bauer and friend josh vital. they were arrested while hiking near the iraq iran border and accused of spying. she spent nearly 14 months in solitary confinement and was released for health and humanitarian reasons. >> my life will not resume until shane and josh are we me. the only point of my existence is to speak for them, to have -- be a voice for them. >> shourd has spoken in person and pleaded for her friend's release. one expert says shourd needs to take her campaign global in order to put pressure on iran. iran said it is ready to hold talks over the nuclear program with the u.s. 'n light october or early november. the nation's foreign minister says iran is preparing a precise date. washington and allies accuse iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons. iran denied that charge. voice president revealed today some personnel at the nuclear facilities were lureed by promises of money to pass secrets to the west. he says tehran has increased security at the plants. >> he is not satisfied boar jerry brown's apology for an offensive remark. they want him to apologize personally. the whitman camp wants brown to identify the aid who called whitman a whore. the comment was camp wants more. a spokesperson issued a statement which says after spending months avoiding his 40 year political record now jerry brown is continuing to insult the voters of california by avoiding taking responsibility for his own actions and the actions of the campaign staff. whitman's former housekeeper may soon get her day in court. mickey diaz the undocument the worker has a wage claim against her boss says a date has been set for a hearing october 20th in san jose. that's just two weeks before the elections. diaz says whitman owes her more than $6,200 in back pay and millage costs. south bay college students says the fbi spied on him and he found a gps tracking device under his car to prove it. this is a picture of the device attached to his car. he wondered what it was until a visit from a federal agent answered that question. here is abc 7. >> i was born in santa clara. i just turned 20 last august. i am a sales manager. we sell laptops. i am a full-time students. >> half egyptian half american muslim got an oil change at this garage he noticed this. attached to the under belly of his car. >> the device i found was stuck by a magnet. >> it was a gps tracking device he took it apart twochlt days later he says the fbi and other police stopped him as he left his apartment complex. a agent started questioning him. >> have you ever been for any type of training? >> no. do you know any one affiliated with anything extreme or abnormal that they shouldn't be? where is the device that you located? did you put it there? >> an fbi spokesperson refused to discuss the discovery but said court decisions have upheld that there is no warrant necessary for gps tracking of a vehicle when the vehicle is in public space. oo i would argue it's an ageeing gus violation of anybody's rights. >> they reassure the government's ability to provide gps on people's cars. he insists civil rights were violated and he was intimidated and harassed. >> they can try but federal officers are protected by robust communities. >> agents spoke and he is cooperating fully. abc 7 news. >> a new report from the california department of public health shows there have been 5,1270 -- 5,270 cases of whooping cough this year. that's the highest in 60 years. the state declared a whooping cough epidemic this year. extended vaccinations and widened the range of people who should get the shot. >> some indication perhaps in one of the regions we are seeing less cases but other regions of the state are still reporting very high activity and some steady activity. it's really a little
