[ inaudible ] all kinds of interesting things on the roads this morning. thank you for joining us i'm kristen sze. >> i'm eric thomas. a livermore math teacher will be in court tomorrow to face charges of having a six month sexual relationship with one of her underaged students. amy hollyfield is live at granada high. a popular social game app has a role in this? >> reporter: yes. they were playing words with friends. officials here at the school are the ones who called police when they caught wind there was possibly an inappropriate relationship going on. she was a math teacher here at the -- the boy was within her students. 40-year-old marie johnson core responded with the boy -- core responded with the boy through text messages, facebook and playing words with friends. police believe she was having sex with him between december and may of last year. >> there is 24 counts that range from sexual intercourse with a minor, lewd acts with a minor and oral copulation that occurred in her car and throughout other locations in livermore, mainly in her car. >> reporter: the school district released a statement saying the teacher has been placed on leave. and the district is cooperating fully with law enforcement officials while conducting a simultaneous personnel investigation. police are encouraging parents to be mindful of their children's social media relationships. investigators don't have any reason to believe there are any other victims. they say it is important parents have frank discussions with their kids. the teacher is scheduled to be in court tomorrow. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. the state is going after adults who provide alcohol to minors in a big way. arresting an alameda mother and south san francisco market owner and charging them in a drunk driving crash that resulted in the death of a teenager last year. terry mcsweeney is live at the dairy market in south city. >> reporter: the owner of this market has been arrested as has a woman all for their role in providing alcohol to a teenager who died in a drunk driving crash. a story with more than a few twists. take a look at the two suspects in this case. you are going to see -- the state alcohol beverage control says chin helped buy the alcohol for her daughter's friend the 17-year-old on february 4th, of last year. 3:00 the next morning the 17-year-old is killed in a drunk driving crash 101 near san francisco, she was not driving the vehicle. state investigators have seen the video of the transaction and they say what it shows is clear. >> the minor tried to purchase the alcohol with a debit card. the transaction did not go through. so the minor left and went to get cash. came back in, purchased the alcohol. they left the store with the alcohol in miss chin's hands, miss chin furnished the alcohol outside the store. >> reporter: the tone for the store owner says -- the attorney says it shows chin buying the alcohol not the teenager and calls the arrest the result of a witch-hunt that authorities are trying to find someone to blame for what everyone agrees is a tragedy. the 19-year-old who is behind the wheel of the carr last february has been -- of the car last february has been convicted of vehicular manslaughter and faces up to four years when he's sentenced next month. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. 5:05. on to the housing crisis. banks backed off on home foreclosures in 2011 that is not because of a big improvement in the industry. economists expect things to take an ugly turn this year. katie marzullo is live with the numbers. >> reporter: never just good news. the numbers in the report by realty track look like good news. but there's that catch. there was a massive drop in foreclosure activity, the fewest since 2007. not necessarily because homeowners caught up with their payments. here are the numbers. realty track reports nationwide for closures were down 34% in 2011 from 2.9 million in 2010 to 1.9 million last year. in california, foreclosures were down 20%, still the third highest rate in the country. experts say a large part of why there were fewer foreclosures is banks were in a holding pattern waiting for certain legalities to be worked out now that they've been worked out banks will move quickly to clear the backlog. back to news, even with more foreclosures coming, the numbers are expected to stay below the peak of 2010. and the prices should bottom out this year. so 2013 could be the start of a real recovery in the housing market. katie marzullo, abc7 news. all 10 university of california campuses, including uc berkeley will be smoke-free within two years if all goes according to plan. uc president yudof sent a letter out monday asking chance horse to form committees on how they will implement the ban: it will prohibit smoking and chewing tobacco on campus. 600 other campuses across the country have smoking bans. police are on the scene of a deadly stabbing near 6th and market streets near stevenson around 2:30 this morning. police found a man in his 30s suffering from a stab wound taken to a nearby hospital and died a short time later no word on motive or suspect description. police say it appears witnesses saw the attack. we'll continue to follow the story and bring you more information as we get. students at a livermore high school are without one math teacher this morning after she was arrested, accused of sexual assault for a relationship she had with a teenaged student. police say she was possible relationship going on and they heard it was possibly took place between december and may of last year. they called police. police say the boy and the teacher corresponded through texting and facebook and played words with friends. >> i never played words with friends with my of my teacher except her my relationship with her was different, i talked to her about other things. she was like a friend almost. >> reporter: the school district released this statement saying the teacher has been placed on leave and the district is cooperating fully with law enforcement and also conducting a say an antioch special ed teacher is getting ready to turn himself in to face charges of having sex with an underaged student. he has been suspended from his job in antioch. police say he had sexual relations with a 15-year-old female student in 2006 and 2007 when he was 24 and living in mercer county, pennsylvania. he's charged with statutory sexual assault, indecent assault and unlawful contact with a minor. >> in california authorities cracking down on underaged drinking, especially the grown-ups who help teenagers get the booze. right now law enforcement is targeting two adults for their bradley has more. >> reporter: this morning, part of the country is digging out or picking up after a day of wild and destructive weather. a possible tornado ravaged towns in rutherford and burke counties in north carolina. the streets were filled with rubble overnight as residents and emergency responders viewed the remains. dozens of homes and buildings were damaged, some leveled. hundreds were left without power. >> i got a call saying that my grandma's house got hit by a tornado. >> here you can see where it blew part of the barn that came from that barn right down there. >> trees down, tower lines down in that swath. >> reporter: in denver, snow was the problem. it fell at the worst possible time, right in the middle of rush hour. the roads left drivers helpless and
