You may want to retire someday ready I'm John Batchelor this is the dots to show and this is the New World Report with Senator Maria Fernanda cabal of the Colombian legislature she's involved and just of whom are the executive director of secure free society is in Washington area in North America with me Joseph revelations that you have translated for me into English bullet points about Colombian intelligence coming across digital information about the l. And a guerrilla terrorist organization the al and a bad actor not only in Colombia but in other states Chile and Ecuador are mentioned what is the e.l.o. End and your measure what is these these revelations what does it point too. Good evening John the l.n. Is probably the biggest terrorist group now that the fark has become more political in Colombia and with this new revelation reveals is that the back in October of last year not over 2020 the Colombian military captured a senior commander of the ill and a guy name on this believe been a guest slot known young girls by the code name to Rielle and they basically have uncovered his encrypted file they cracked his encrypted files so the Colombian magazine someone just gave us a glimpse into the analysis of those encrypted files and it's shocking what is finding and it compounds a lot of things that we believe but it gives a lot more evidence among those things it talks about their international network where they have a presence in 9 countries mostly in Latin America but some parts of Europe as well they have very sophisticated operation even operations to kill or capture high profile political figures including the kid in the sons of former President Al Gore or even and they also talk about the change in message in the modus operandi among those is that they found them with basically about 2 What was it 3.2 terabytes of information that were encrypted in this plaster of i.t. Equipment everything from solar panels to laptops last drives. Me p.s. Cameras the whole works and things as is now being analyzed is that they are able to use this as an i.t. Equipment to be able to do cyber enable techniques that have multiplied in hand the capabilities for the protests which were what we saw on 2019 the protests in to lay the protests and employer the protests in Colombia so this is showing the deal it is a much bigger player than what we previously thought are not just a guerilla group they're pretty much a weapon of asymmetric warfare and they're aligned to all kinds of movements internationally Joseph the threats to other indication. Of threats to other countries Chile and Ecuador are mentioned can we believe this is all going to eventually connect back to the bad actors in Caracas around Madura but also Iran Russia Cuba. Can we believe that what we're looking at here is an integrated and comprehensive our ambition to undermine the of the governance of the continent. Yes absolutely I mean we known that the l.n. Pretty much always had half of its forces inside been a toilet for some time they've been reported to be and no fewer than 12 states inside and it's well a new also been in Ecuador which is the other neighboring country of Colombia and they have some of their hideouts in Cuba but what's interesting about these revelations in the month of the encrypted file that they got released and revealed was their relationship potentially with Iran and there is one of the translations or transcriptions of the one of the file that they put out in the magazine that talks about the Elan very looks highly overrun because they pretty much give them support to do indoctrination recruitment spotting assessment to be able to grow their base and to tap into more of the youth in other kind of networks throughout Colombia and Latin America as a whole there's even a point where they mention that it was the Cubans are good but they just don't have the capability the Russians and Chinese don't want to do any of this work but the Iranians have an open door policy when it comes to revolutionary action so I think that was very telling and dealing has become very capable it seems and they have quite a bit of support quite a bit of technology and they're no doubt in cahoots with Cuban but as well now the 1st threat of violence to end these bullet points correctly the 1st threat is to direct to Colombia do you measure that Colombia has been to stabilize the land there were those riots that we reported on several months ago that Maria reported to us where a consequence of say local rabblerousing or maybe sympathy with the the downtrodden in some fashion during the pandemic everybody's having a very hard do you believe the undermining of Colombia is working or 0 and frustrated by the Duke a Administration. The ministration has been very strong against Elan but we're learning with the revelations of the files that were complete commander or that they have a bigger reach than what I think was initially thought I'm not sure if the Colombian intelligence had the same analysis but I know it to me after the child has been recovered and found it's clear that the l.m. Is not just a Colombian terrorist group not even just a Colombian minutes one terrorist group they're a Latin American terrorist group that has presence in at least 8 countries in Latin America even as problems in places like France in Europe and I think that's something that's you know that resembles what the park was that it's at its high point back in the mid 2000 so it's definitely something worth noting but we should also take into account the fact that the reason that the Colombia intelligence has these calls is because they captured one of its senior commanders back in October last year so that those show you that the duty government has been going after deal and quite aggressively So obviously if they did it was successful that operation they want to be able to get access was intelligence but the intelligence is is alarming to say the least just the senator cannot join us today she's traveling and some connections are not working so I ask you to help. Me understand what these revelations mean if throughout Latin America governments reading this in other countries which poke last week about Venezuela for example bullying along the key on the border Venezuela being a bad actor in other countries in other parts of Latin America Bolivia I mentioned one to tell us that the bad actors are confident and extremely well financed and are going to be able to survive revelations like this this is just a way of measuring how powerful they are not in any fashion how weak they are. You know what it what it shows is that there is a increasing convergence of both state and non-state actors that are utilizing their capabilities to benefit each other in the case of the state actor you have the one that we always talk about the Cuba Venezuela who uses it state institutions instead of fighting against these type of terrorist organizations they use their stays additions to support these terrorist organization give them more cover give them more concealment and provide them with additional support capabilities but on the flip side what we're also learning is these non-state actors especially on the ones the insurgent want such a deal and have tremendous robust international and regional networks that's why it's hard to deal with these kind of problems because they don't just function on a state level they function on a slow and permeate society we just are prepared to use. What is only so much warfare right divide demonstration new to a region as the secretary of state just confirmed are getting busy in all areas the Middle East and China I don't recall there being emphasis on the terror threat in South America not the terror threat of the jihad us but the terror threat of bad actors out of Caracas you'd have to say what we're looking at here is is an empire being built by breaking down the governance of all these other states have you read have you heard from the Biden ministration attention to what is revealed in these documents. I didn't read anything related to this the more recent revelation in these documents from the capture 1000th the l.n. But I do know that the bottom is ration is going to look at Venezuela is going on as we look at Cuba the thing is I think they need to be very honest about does new synergy that happens between these terrorist groups and those rogue regimes it's very clear that Venezuela the Missouri seem has been involved with deal and I don't think that Biden issues are any indication would dispute that that's a that's an imperative fact at this point but I think the the effort is that the Distin or g. That's been developed between these different entities non-state and state actors is now managed to see itself in other countries what we don't know is what other methods are being used by these regimes and the terrorist organizations to finance candidates to enhance candidates to do digital manipulation to be able to provide them advantages what's going to happen in the Ecuadorian election on Sunday there's very big stakes in Ecuador because one of the candidates that's being. Foolish. As a president presidential candidate is very tied to the old guard in Ecuador which is tied to the girl Castro's deal and the whole gambit So this is one of the things that independence or just going to have to wrestle with this new day non-state threat convergence that's basically destroying let America I mention Chile only because I did extensive reporting on those riots that took place at the end of last year just of those. Led to the redoing of the Chilean constitution if my memory is correct does that serve the purpose of the plan or its allies to tear up and rewrite the constitutions of Latin America is that something that that helps them yes absolutely because there's 2 elements to these type of terrorist organizations one is an ideological alignment we can never forget that there are Marxist Leninist groups guerrilla groups that all they started it started with an ideological cause but they're also criminal movements that are involved in gold trafficking drug trafficking weapons smuggling and all the likes what happens in the movie scene in today's world this communist regimes and criminalize elements to. And and and together so that in case of a country that really was the economics of a developing economy America the idea of breaking that economy down not only symbolically important for these months of Leninist groups it also opens up more course for criminal movements to come and so that's what really the goal here is and she let it go in Chile and to basically break down the democratic structure weaken the governance abilities and then allow criminal actors to take over while under the the dawn of a Marxist Leninist revolution and I think that's what you know and. That we're learning to use all the really old commonality mama I'm speaking with just Bill Maher the executive director of secure free society Senator Maria Fernanda cabal is not able to join us she's traveling in Central America and the connections are not always stable especially in times of storms and people moving around when we come back we're going to go to the Amazon we touched last week upon early reports that the capital of the Amazon menow us was deeply deeply damaged by the virus turns out the damage is spectacularly ruinously tragic we're looking out of mutation of the virus that is highly infectious and has overwhelmed the health care system not only of the Amazon but also of course still I'm John about services that. Around that he wanted he wanted to be secretary of state and these were rumors created when in New York I think President Biden his immediate advisors I did not see comments from them. This is but in true Cuomo he's a survivor he's a tough guy from tough neighborhood in in Queens again what Sorry British expression let things sort themselves out and let's see what happens there sorting themselves out right now we still have a crisis we need a governor and I understand questions to be answered you need common sense and I can understand you know what I can stand and stand I just had a show with Governor Pataki. Before that and we talked about California Illinois and New York Democratic states Democratic governors why are they not standing behind President Biden opening up those states and opening up the front I just don't understand where we could we could search all day John and not find the answer to that to the reaction from the governor of California who is in trouble with the recall vote was that what the governor of Texas has done was reckless and I I puzzle why governors would now be criticizing each other they've all got through this the best they can I want to One more about Governor Cuomo because I've watched him be an inspiration to the state for a year now it's almost exactly a year he did a very good job when we praised him often John I recall that in our early conversations. Governor Cuomo said history and the Democratic Party is one of being a liberal to make a distinction the Democratic Party we don't make in the Republican Party liberal and progressive Do you believe that the voices being raised for him to resign are the progressive since the self interest who well I think this is 100 percent. I think you. And in 2 ways the so-called progresses which I actually call requests because I have a lot of respect for them Mr has now and a Liberal Party in New York they go back a long way and it aligned themselves and sometimes were to rip up the Republican Party so I call the New York Republicans if they're Republican liberals they are chuff law abiding people a conservative people with a hawk. And the Liberal Party ads to highlight the so-called regress. That I have been targeting the Democrats to give targeting to commonsense Democrats in New York and scare them into being bad Democrats I think that's the problem. That seems the vaccine is here the vaccinations are going forward there's confusion across the country about more and more people are vaccinated every day there's a proposal for what is called a vaccine passport to enter into sporting contests are large arenas in New York City and New York State also it would oblige if you have had a test in the last 24 hours do you think that's a good idea I think it's a great idea you get open up our city we can open up our state we've got to open up our country we're going to open up the world I mean I want to fly to Paris the. Long weekend like I used to and not. And I think that he. Should have the passport with the attachment page for if you got vaccinated and the date you got vaccinated. And also that if it's a sporting event if you even have the passport would be with the vaccine that you got ratch lady or you we have these new tests that they give you results in 20 seconds or 20 minutes or 5 minutes or 10 minutes they should be like a green room like we talked about before I test him and then allow them to and I understand is 9697 percent accurate. The president has compromise with the Democratic Party about the stimulus bill there are some details here but Joe Manchin led a compromise movement in the u.s. Senate for stimulus checks to go out on the basis of your income above a certain amount of income you're not going to get those checks or be graded down John this is the 1st compromise we've seen since the new president's Well I'm happy some Democrats some some common sense and I have a disclosure to make yes I mean my wife and it was so-called lofty people received the $1200.00 stimulus check last month and I have it in my office I'm going to put it up in a I did not cash the check right I plan to put it up in a frame and hang it up about what happens with our federal government I don't intend to cash a check to prejudice the man Mago received $1200.00 got I think you're the modern equivalent of the dollar a year man one of the men who serve the government without It's not about money it's about building what a better city in a better state in a better country and we want everybody to live in peace Jon Katz Matilda's the host of cats round table I'm John back. A Rochelle or landscape said this is not the time to be rolling back restrictions. Because of the confluence of several things that promise new surges so. The c.d.c. And promulgating this seem to be putting a great deal of stock in. A couple of preliminary circumstantial findings namely that vaccination after vaccination there may be. Less pirates harbored in a person's. Head a person's nasal passages. After if and even if that person is infected now a need that's a little confusing because but you have to understand what the criteria were in the clinical trials which were designed to to detect symptomatic infection and so the criteria for an in an infection. Whether it was in the vaccine group or the placebo group Boko group was a positive nasal swab for viral genetic material and at least one or 2 symptoms so it's possible that. Those people who have been vaccinated are prevented from having symptomatic infection and of course more serious and such and that require hospitalization or or an i.c.u. But that they may be carrying the virus and able to transmit it to other people and that's the crux of this this new policy of are here Henry there will be a moment now where people are going to ask what is normal and if I understand correctly this policy the c.d.c. Is suggesting there is. Not going to be a moment when there's normal because to get the whole human race within these structures seems soft bridge too for several 1000 bridges too far Henry especially since look at I've misread the recommendation are within 3 months following receipt of the last 3 dose the last dose is in the series eventually they're going to be millions of people that are not within 3 months does that mean they're safe I mean read it positively if you're outside of 3 months are you safe now. No In fact. It's the opposite what they're saying is that they don't know what the duration of immunity from vaccination they doesn't say that Henry doesn't say we're not sure that's what you're zag now that's right it's to this isn't this is a confusing policy and both of the broad strokes and the details John. The now I'd like to mention why I think this is not sufficiently cautious and we're approaching the confluence of a couple of things that. That threaten new surges and those are so-called variants of concern of the coronavirus. The u.k. There in the South African variant the Brazilian variant and a couple within the u.s. One that's becoming more prevalent in New York and another in California and these are more transmissible and in some cases. Are more resistant to the antibodies that are created or elicited by the vaccines so that's not a good that's not a good sign and the other thing is a behavioral one we're we're approaching spring break at us colleges and even high schools these days and when you combine that with the complete removal of any restrictions on on behavior in places like Florida and Texas it's going to be a we're out of school let's go to Florida and party. Henry because we have these variants now and because everybody's getting vaccinated and presume that they're going to be safe on the other side of vaccination does that mean the c.d.c. Has just put a stop to various places opening up does that mean that we need to revisit the education of the American people because of the uncertainty. Well we need to continue the education of the American people regarding those those old tried and true precautions to masks hand-washing of avoiding crowds and and social distancing they're boring but they work they really work you have taught me over the years that when they prepare my vaccine for the flu season which we've talked about for 1718 years when they prepare that vaccine they know that they're not going to anticipate perfectly that there will be workarounds by the back of the virus itself and some people will get sick is that the way to regard these. Vaccines that we're getting from the companies that are said to be 90 or 95 percent they can't catch everything. Yet that's of an excellent point John and the. Vaccines that had 95 percent advocacy roughly namely the Pfizer bio and tech and the more turn of vaccines were tested early on and they were tested against the what we might think of as the original corona virus the original SARS codes too but the variants that are somewhat resistant and we think we've seen mapped in the Johnson and Johnson vaccine. Which was only 66 percent effective overall and not all the countries in which it was tested in the clinical trials and 72 percent effective in the u.s. So it's quite possible that that difference between 72 percent and the j. And j. Vaccine and then 95 percent effort to see in the earlier facts eons is due to come to a greater prevalence of these resistant viral. Variants and because the information is that the virus is now and Democrats believe that means that such among us forever each year will revisit this story is that correct they'll have to develop new vaccines for each year's iterations that's that's because it's the focus most people are only just an epidemiologist there just like the flu we're going to need to provide the vaccine from time to time to account for new variants and people will need to get vaccinated each year and not skip that the way they do now for the earlier flus. Yeah that's that's exactly right and you know people people are often not very compliant The flu kills one average 36000 Americans a year and there isn't great compliance. Of course but that's despite the corona virus that's killed what something like $520000.00 Americans in the course of about a year so maybe that'll put the fear of God and people Henry Miller is a senior fellow at the Pacific Research Institute and the website is Henry Miller and dot org he was founding director of the f.d.a. From the surface of the planet Earth we're headed to lower Thora but the International Space Station the I s that over these many weeks months Bob Zimmerman who keeps the Web site behind the Black has been following the leak story it started as a leak invest the Russian module the centerpiece of a Russian part of the space station it extended to leave leave and the search was on for why or how now it's many leagues and there might be a remedy for the ones they can find Bob a very good evening to you why the leaks and how do you fix it get even good even John Well this is going on for more than a year actually almost a year and a half they 1st detected this leak back last not summer of 20 it was the summer of 20 of 19 and it was a big leak and so they let it slide for a very long time and then they finally last summer started to try to trace it down and they were having trouble they were finding it then they finally located a leak and that was a leak that was living on clear seem to be about an inch long a crack no pictures ever been released this crew of this crack a crack not a micrometeorite hit which would be a hole this was actual crack fracture of some kind in the metal hall and they did a temporary patch on that and discovered it was still the savez was still leaking Zvezda by the way it's not so much that it's the heart of the Russian system of part of the station which it is it's also one of the oldest modules in space on the station it's the 2nd oldest more than 20 years old been in space for 20 plus years it's a very long time to be in space and so and it's also the leak that was found was at the aft part of the station we're near the docking port where there have been more than 3 dozen dockings over those 20 years back and. Foods freighters and so use capsules come in and out and get old and so crack suggested if stress fracture which means the metal is can hold this is a concern Well they they they when they didn't get the leak fixed the 1st patch that Russians sent up what they call a microscope is some kind of a quick man that allows them to look at the surface of the interior of the says the module and where the leaks have been. High powered to get a closer look and it appears they found a bunch of cracks fractures other leaks and so for the next week or so what the Russian cosmonauts are going to be doing on the station. Is inspect those leaks they're going to actually this is actually correct they're going to drill a tiny hole at the end of the cracks that prevents a crack from expanding think of a crack on your windshield it will grow over time and the best way the most effective way to stop it is to actually drill a hole at the end in fact they do this routinely and have for us literally decades on telescopes on the ground if you have a glass telescope mirror and it develops a crack and you put a drill hole in it the end of the crack in the crack will stop expanding at that point so we're going to drill holes and each one of these leaks and then they're going to attach it again and basically is going to use a cold welder and then the will cover it with basically duct tape on top and sits on the interior of station the end of the station will hold it in place the so it should work no real issues. Has released repeated guidance practices considered safe for those who are fully vaccinated against the coronavirus related to quarantine and testing the federal health agency said that those who are fully vaccinated can spend more time with vaccinated people indoors with no mask so long as those who are vaccinated are at low risk for severe cold with 19. Well they say that for most people of a certain age their brains tend to see the big picture before setting in the focus on the details those growing up in the digital age however being rewired to see the world a whole lot differently researchers in Hungary say children who start using digital services at a young age pay more attention to tiny details and less to the entire picture about that at least $30000.00 organizations across the United States including a significant number of small businesses towns cities and multiple governments have over the past few days been hacked by an unusually aggressive Chinese cyber espionage a unit that's focused on stealing the e-mail from victim organizations Let's check in with our expert on the Internet Lauren Weinstein this is pretty widespread Lauren isn't it and it's worse than just e-mail to what's apparently happened is that various versions of Microsoft Exchange server were hacked and that Microsoft. E-mail calendar collaboration it's the products used by firms from very small to global who have chosen to use Microsoft for such services. And should note that many firms don't use Microsoft's services like everybody's being impacted by this only the ones who chose. But yeah it's about $30000.00 estimated right now then and rising no one really knows how many and the hack opens up once it gets in there it opens up all sorts of holes so attackers have leverage to install other model where do all sorts of other nasty things Microsoft did release patches for the but as usual with patches many firms don't install them right away for a variety of reasons some good and sometimes not so good some may not even know about the patches so this is still on the upswing ad the scope of the pack is. So large that it could well be the largest and in recent history. So the federal government now considers this to be a priority matter to try to try to deal with this this problem of Microsoft's software and especially has a particular concern and this isn't necessarily a big surprise this hack appears to be from a Chinese source of this case a Chinese hacking group called Half the of which in the past has targeted all manner of think tanks of defense contractors and researchers and random random places too it's generally opportunistic behavior they don't necessarily know what they're going to find but they just want to find the good stuff that might be of military value or more often typically economic and of course once these kinds of vulnerabilities are in place even though they were they were targeted they were done by particular group once you all these holes are open other hacking groups that can exploit them for their own purposes so it becomes a domino effect and it is pretty bad war now is our country doing the same thing to them. Ike I don't know the answer to that to that question you know the the general trend in cyber security defenses has been to in some situations assume that the only way to fight back is with actual offensive attacks the problem is. Obviously you can get into amounts to a nuclear war a nuclear cyber war right I mean if you have escalating attacks back and forth you can really get into some serious problems of the other danger is sometimes it's not as clear as in this case what the source of the attack is so if you do a defensive response and it turns out you're you're not hitting the actual culprit then you have even even larger problems but certainly there has been a trend in recent years the thinking has been there may be some situations where an offensive a to. May be necessary you know that the big carry the big that cloth they are part of but it's a very very delicate area it's very controversial a lot of it goes out of secret of course a lot can go wrong all right keep your eyes on the story forsworn Weinstein our expert on the internet once a week astronomer Steve Case joins us to talk about things in the sky and he really is right now for this week's report Hi Stephen and hello there George we begin of course with space and with all the attention now on the Mars 2020 robotic perseverance Rover Georgia this is interesting NASA has but a short time to develop a new series of human space suits to deal with the reality of a return to the moon and future human Mars missions but many George do not know that the current space suits but these particular missions are 9 $170.00 s. Technology right now so says NASA engineer Pablo Daley on the rector of the lab George at the University of North Dakota which is a NASA sponsored project NASA has not designed a new spacesuit since 977 and he says we need to get a move on if NASA hopes to meet a 2024 manned lunar mission deadline NASA needs a new space suit for space walks and how about this a new suit for surface exploration of the moon and beyond he has 2 designs that we tested once called the and the x one that's for the Mars missions and the end the x. 2 for lunar missions and George this I find fascinating the lunar missions of course with moon dust they've found that moon dust can be abrasive and cut like glass and from Mars missions there's something in the loop on the surface of Mars so we'll call perchlorate and I fax it to humans of serious concerns exist with the new development of spacesuits we move on to astronomy George look at the moon right it looks amazing most of the time if not all the time but many did not know that the moon actually has a tail Yes Scientists now say that the most exhibits a long comet like sodium tail to the pressure of sunlight hitting a lunar surface. That this tale George even though it's invisible to the naked eye is most pronounced when the mood reaches its due faves this sodium moon tale is most powerful when the new moon is closest to Earth for some 5 hours after New Moon as it beams its sodium tale around the Earth's atmosphere in space and meteor showers George which hit the moon make the tale even more intense and things get more complicated in the sky but for all of us out there George the live sky is how we wrap it up things that you can see last quarter moon was on the 6th but now folks George this is important look low in the southeast at dawn but the waning crescent moon which is now closing in on both the planet Mercury Jupiter and Saturn all these objects low in the east southeast as early as the morning of the 10th all objects will appear within 5 degree separation and the new moon of course the dark of the moon on the 13th but finally George in dark skies at 9 pm the Milky Way runs nearly due south to north in your sky and overhead around 9 pm on these early or mid March evenings the bright star Capella some 43 light years away from us the light left back in 1978 it's the 6th brightest star in the heavens now but it was the brightest star in the night sky some 200000 years ago don't forget email me is always a Dr Scott show which e-mail always remembers a plea to keep your eyes to the skies always check out the sky live dot com for more information and George always proud to be the show's navigator on the highway to the thank you Dr sky We'll talk to you next week how did the line mosques space x. And welcome back to coast to coast George Norry with you Eric Berg with us for the next couple hours reporter an editor based in Houston and after a long career at the Houston Chronicle newspaper he joined Ars Technica back in 2015 as the site's senior space editor covering space x. NASA and everything beyond He was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for his coverage of Hurricane Ike in the Houston Chronicle area in 2008 he is a meteorologist as well Eric welcome to the program it's a pleasure to talk to you the seating me to where we're going to have some fascinating discussions here with you before we get into your work liftoff which was very well done by the way tell us a little bit about Ilan mosque and how he started how he made his money and then how he got into the space x. . Yeah you one must was born in South Africa by all accounts was a pretty bright kid and emigrated to Canada and then started to go to college and then went to graduate school in the United States you know by the time in his twenty's he had a couple of Ivy League Griese and economics and physics and started Pay Pal. Sort of to help disrupt the banking industry and so by around 2001 he had sold off his shares of Pay Pal and and had about $180000000.00 and was trying to figure out what to do next with his life if he was almost 30 years old maid had a full life by then already was he always interested in space Yeah that was always one of the big interests he'd had. And what happened was back in 2001 he was talking with a friend named Dale resi about what they what he was going to do next and he thought well he would check out and see what NASA was doing because he was interested in that and he thought that by by then you know more than 3 decades after Apollo to Nassau to have a plan to send humans to Mars and when he went to their website back then they had nothing nothing about a human plan to Mars they were just building the International Space Station the pa . No What came 1st for him Tesla or space x. Space x. Came 1st he founded that may have 2002 and Tesla was about a year or 2 later after that did he sell finance space x. In the beginning or did he have venture capital money. He did sell finance he started he put into putting $100000000.00 of the company and the idea would be that that would be about enough to get them free but at times a small rocket with a single main engine was called called the Falcon one he would go on to get small government grants you know 5000000 here but it was mostly all his money he risked all that capital just in case ah yeah you know there's there's no joke in the space industry if you want to become a millionaire start a rocket company as a billionaire so yeah that's almost like the restaurant business too exactly but he you know he he started out George and it was his goal from the beginning to send humans to Mars that was the plan you know back in 2002 when he founded space x. And it sounded really really audacious then today maybe less so but the fact that that was pretty out there talk is in his absence a sexy when it started off even though we pumped a $100000000.00 into it was on pretty shaky financial ground wasn't Oh definitely I mean even though that sounds like a lot of money when you need to buy all the materials to make rockets you need to hire very smart people to build them any to build launch sites 100000000 doesn't get you very far and you know in initially it helped the launch from California from Vandenberg Air Force Base but their end of the competition and peer Craddock red tape there and ultimately to the last minute were forced to to find a launch site where was there and Berger has a book is called lift off when when when you started following the law in Moscow what was it that got you interested. It was just a different way he was doing things if you look around the space industry today the companies like Lockheed Martin Boeing they're in it for the government contracts so they're not going to build something that a rocket a spacecraft a satellite until the government gives them a contract to do so right with space x. That was you know we want to have we want to go to Mars and we think we need to make lower cost rockets to do that and so they started out with the Falcon one and they had no the government wasn't thank that no customer was paying for it was that was their design which was totally really different than the way it was typically done in space have you had a chance to meet a lawn mosque Oh yeah I spent many hours with him for the book both in interviews and sitting in on meetings with the company to get a sense of how he how he how he leads I certainly an interesting guy is he a genius he's extremely smart you know over my career I've had the opportunity to interview Stephen Hawking implication Southerner of smart people on Musk is both brilliant and extremely driven How would you compare him to Jeff Bezos You know there's it's funny you ask that they're similar in that they're both successful successful people who are very interested in space travel. They're both engineers I would say a lot is a better aerospace engineer. And certainly he has been more involved with space x. Over the last 20 years than Blueridge are than basis has been with his rocket company called Blue Origin it's exciting and at this point they have it seems like they've surpassed Nassau haven't thank. Space x. Has surpassed NASA in some areas it is certainly safe to say there NASA is most important contractor at this point you know they're launching humans in just orbit for NASA of course they're launching cargo to the International Space Station if we do succeed in going back to the moon space x. Will play an important role. They are much better at building rockets than NASA much more efficient. In that and they now operate more satellites in orbit than any space agency or country in the world so yeah they're there better a lot of things Eric what did you learn about the early days of space x. In terms of the rocket technology. Well what they learn is that it's really hard to get something into orbit for the 1st time out and they had to launch 3 times before they they finally made it successfully on the 4th time they had 3 failures so it was you know that they learned a lot of hard lessons I mean if you were an astronaut years ago in your line must said hey I want you on one of my rockets would you have gone. Like like everyone else I probably would have laughed him out of the room and said you can't even get into orbit with a small rocket you know his 1st his 1st vehicle the Falcon one to get a few 100 pounds into low Earth orbit you need obviously many tons if you're going to send a spacecraft to the humans so when he talked that way you know he had a spacecraft a mockup spacecraft in his old factory he started on Nelson. And it was called Puff the Magic Dragon. For reasons you might imagine. But the visual is always there he just took a while to to fulfill it well he's the one laughing now isn't it he absolutely is the one laughing now you know it's it's they really struggled until about 2010 and at that time they said all these amazing things landing rockets you know not trying this drone ships launching his Test little Mars flying humans into orbit it's in the last decade they've really gone from David to go why in the aerospace industry Erik did he get his $100000000.00 investment back. He got that back and much more space x. Today has a valuation I think during its most recent round of funding of about $75000000000.00 Wow Well I think masers probably is a little bit more cash but they've been going back and forth on the the most valuable asset basis is ahead now but you know when Tesla was really high several months ago must briefly was richer than bases all of this is on paper of course he doesn't have the cash in a drawer somewhere what would you say is Space X.'s best achievement. For me it's the Reus the 1st stages George I mean if you think about it you know the rocket launches off the face of the earth and it's pushing a spacecraft that ultimately is going to be going 25 times the speed of sound right and then you've got that 1st stage with these 9 engines that is traveling many times the speed of sound screaming through the atmosphere and then you've got to get that vehicle back down to the ground on a little boat that's you know not much bigger it's just many times smaller than a city block and it's it's got to light its engines as it's coming back to the atmosphere and it's just an incredibly turbulent environment and so it's got to light its engines and no humans controlling it's all program and so the wish to drone ship is autonomous the rockets autonomous and it all comes together and you see these rockets slow down and then land in the middle of the ocean on the high seas I mean that that to me was it just feels like the future like we're seeing we're stepping into the future when that kind of thing you know NASA never did it or even tried How come. Well they did some experiments in the 1980 s. And ninety's a program called the e.c. X. Cleanses in a row it took about maybe about 5 months for him to complete that and he was able to take that test to see if he had a viable kidney for his wife and that one of the other unique parts about it was done on t.v. It was on The Steve Harvey t.v. The protocol. Just like. Now. Welcome back to coast to coast. Book is called lift off we'll take calls with Eric next hour Eric what was the most surprising aspect of space x. That you want covered covering that over the years what is the one thing that just boggles and it's really the way the desire by Iran must to go fast you know in talking to some of the earliest employees and seeing how they go today and he wakes up every day with the idea of how can I get my companies to move more quickly and he applies this constant pressure George that basically you know he will have a meeting on a Friday afternoon and you know how up with some kind of super potential solution to a difficult engineering challenge and you know he'll want an answer by Monday morning things went. Is is more al good at that company. It is you know. What you go in to to these meetings and you see his executive conference room and he'll have a meeting about a rocket engine or the Dragon spacecraft or the big starship vehicle you know there will be a couple of people in their thirty's and forty's sitting around that table but mostly it's kids in their twenty's engineers right out of school genius and they come to the company knowing that they're going to work really hard right 60708090 hour weeks and basically just give their lives over to this company but it's a trade that most of them are willing to make because they realize that you know space x. Is the place if you really want to do things on the edge of space flight like we talked about landing a rocket on a building the starship vehicle to go to Mars there's nowhere else to do it because NASA for all of the great things it does is not moving quickly toward those kinds of goals but that's basic you have a chance to actually do them and you're not worried about Congress or a new president coming in and canceling the program the only person whose voice really matters is. How many people does he employ now through or just make sex say sex is about 6500 employees give or take and they're based on the vile Elsegood and still there they will be the company was originally founded and they had a small factory else a good go in 2007 they moved to Hawthorne California down the road and l.a. But then now they have you know facilities at the launch sites in Florida they've built a big engine test facility and central Texas they've got this Star Base in South Texas on the folks at Chico where they're building starships So they're all over the place is he going to get humans back to the moon or to Mars before NASA. You know that's a great question and I think the answer is quite possibly yes although more likely it probably will be in conjunction with NASA sure I think he has is building an excellent transportation system in terms of rockets and spacecraft but to go to the moon is specially to go to Mars it's so far it's 6 months there 6 months back lots of concerns about radiation and yeah you need power on the surface of Mars you need to have a chat and these are all things that NASA studies for 20 years on the International Space Station and so I think he's going to go with NASA although if they don't move fast enough he may just press on ahead by himself he's been launching these Starlink space ships with these little satellites that go in lines we've been getting calls on open line sometimes Erik where people think oh there you are folks out there George and one thing ours the cluster of his little satellites all over the place what's he doing with phones yeah so he'll launch 60 of these a time they're about $300.00 pounds each you know the kind of each about the size of a mini refrigerator or thereabouts you know he is trying to put thousands of these satellites up in low earth orbit to send internet signals back to Earth now we have big satellites at geostationary orbit so this is you know 20000 miles above the earth sir I said all right you know you provide communications but there's legs because even the speed of light there's delay. And geostationary space the satellite is always there it's you know it's falling around the earth is the same speed of the Earth's rotation so it's always looking down at us. In low Earth orbit the satellites are going much faster. In terms of relative to the surface here so they zip on by and that's why that's why people see them moving overhead but it doesn't take light very long to bounce up to a stop light come back so you can get. Lol a.t.r. Net so he wants to deliver high speed internet from a constellation of satellites It's called starlike and he's not alone you know Jeff Bezos has a project hyper plan tell us has a plan one of has a plan China is looking at a lower 'd orbit you know that constellations and this is the future he's just the 1st to really get up there because the Falcon 9 rocket can fly so often. That that he's able to move more quickly to the. Are there other countries that are trying to do similar things privately like Elon Musk is or is he in bees all standing all alone on this planet doing this. There are other cut like European Space Agency is trying to do some of these things but they move pretty slow and the only real competitor in a lot of these areas right now is China and that's because they have the resources to do it in terms of guaranteed funding right yeah exactly from us at the. Base at the budget and then they have these long term plans and because the leadership never changes they stick to their plans. So they are making strides in what China did about 4 or 5 years ago George is a recognized United States had an advantage with its commercial space industry because you had actors like mosque basis other people doing really innovative things are doing it much more quickly than the government. So they licensed out their technology to quote unquote private companies which aren't really companies in the sense they are here in the United States but these companies then went out and raised money to the government technology to try to move quickly so if you look at some of these companies like there's a there's a Chinese firm called go lactic energy and their plane literally is to build rockets that look almost exactly like the Falcon 9 so to China both the government space corporation as well as these private companies is doing things that that sort of put it on a par to try to catch up to what space x. Has done and launch is space x. Launching now for private companies as well in addition to contracting with NASA Yeah absolutely so you know it's interesting when space x. Was founded u.s. Rockets had gotten so expensive because the big companies at the time were essentially reliant on launching military satellites to make their businesses Rob and where they gouge Enos because they were exclusive one thing that's right they had a they had a lock in Boeing had a monopoly on launch contracts and so in the 1980 s. And ninety's all of those commercial launches you talked about so like if Sirius was to get a big satellite up in the g.s. Stationary orbit for communications or directv or whatever they would go to Europe and launch on an area on rockets or they would go to Russia and launch on a proton rockets the u.s. Share of this commercial launch market was about 0 percent and now space x. Thanks to space x. United States launches about 60 percent of those satellites and that's just because the Falcon 9 costs a lot less than those competitors technologically speaking Eric how fast is technology in the space area moving. It's moving it's moving a lot better now than it was and it was 20 years ago that's for sure and you know we talked about how human must want to go fast and what. Most remarkable I think is what they're trying to do with the starship program now they've they've blown up the last 3 you may have seen these launches from south Texas where this vehicle goes up and does its belly flop comes back down and tries to land and then it explodes because this is all pretty experimental but these are large rockets you know many stories tall you know it would take you you know half a minute to walk all the way around it and. They're building the sinks every 23 weeks in tents in South Texas and that's the kind of thing that we've never seen before in the spaces and that's why it's really exciting to think that yeah we might actually send humans to Mars in these things in the next decade or so just because they're moving so fast would you go to Mars if they said to you Eric it's going to be a 3 year plus trip for you up there and back you're going to be there for 3 years would you do it now I'd go to the moon but I don't think I'd go to Mars got a family here on Earth and the outed by get it earth is it better planet than Mars and I salute the pioneers that would make that trip but I it's you know I like living here you know they talk about terra forming Mars we've had Robert Zubrin on from of the Mars Society and you know he's got a plan that would then he said would take about 100 years but they wouldn't create an atmosphere and everything else but I mean is that is that really the way we want to live do we want to live in a bubble for so many years and stuff like that I wouldn't well I probably would neither And by the way Bob's great I'm glad you had it on but the idea that that mosque has and that people like me sort of believe in is that our future lies among the stars of humanity is really going to thrive e.c.s. Ultimately you know we're going to find Earth like worlds around other stars. The. There are no other Earth like worlds in our solar system and we're not ready to go to the stars yet so the interim step is to see you know sort of the try out settlement on world closer to home and the best one is Mars and it's not good right it's administers very thin. It's here you're opening segment you talked about the perchlorate in the soil that's that's harmful to humans there's a lot of things that are not great on Mars but it does have I think the polar caps it does have a thin atmosphere the temperatures are extreme extreme extreme like you find on places so we're going to have to go at some point and that's the 1st step and it won't be pleasant if the won't be great but if we're going to do this you've got to start somewhere after World War 2 a group of German scientists want to the Soviet Union and to us and those that the Soviets got apparently beat us to the punch because they got Sputnik up in 57 before we did and scared the living daylights out of everybody in America I mean I was just a kid but I remember my parents like in fear and all my God they've got a spaceship up there was thing was no bigger than a basketball but Bernard Von Braun we got him and he was of course very influential with our space program which would musk of gone after a guy like that to try to hire him. Probably I mean he goes after the best possible pallet that he can get. One of the one of his earliest hires was was guiding you all talk it was for the Turkish engineer is in graduate school at Stanford University this is back in 2003 and all Tom's wife would had a good job of Google he didn't want to move to Los Angeles so when he interviewed with Mosque. Ilan said I heard your wife doesn't you know doesn't want to move to l.a. Because she's got a job of Google Well I just call. Larry and he said She can you know she can work down here. He called his friend Larry Page you know who runs on a girl to go over yeah. So that I mean that there were many stories like that when I would talk is really employed so sure he's yes if he if he thought of one of our Braun could help him he would absolutely have gone after for Bob Braun does Baze almost get along with the lawn mosque. You know they don't talk much you know I asked So one of my interviews with you on was one of your whining from the factory in California to the filter site and south Texas. On his eyes jet and we were talking about because because Jeff Bezos moves much more slowly more like a traditional aerospace company and he had told me Jeff Bezos that is that it takes 7 years to build a rocket engine right and I was talking on because their 1st rocket engine the Marlin space x. Had built in less than 3 years and test and I said so I told him what Jeff its basis it said and he won laughter he said well that's because Jeff Bezos frankly is not a very good engineer so I think I think they can kind of respect what each other are doing and certainly they have the same idea they both think that the 1st thing to do is to frame down the cost of launch they're both building reasonable rockets but the rivalry is real and and I don't think there's any love lost between them not a little assignment for you Eric and that is get a lawn boss to do a 2 hour segment with us like you're doing tonight and I'll bring you on with me and will or will Cohen or view the program well work out a you know he says he doesn't answer the question like I mean give him the give his people the inviting Let's see what happens all right I well you know you never know I mean it's the world's largest late night show he might he might do it he by like you know he might do it yes he is up late at night can you imagine him taking calls with the listeners to that would be fun you bet he might be up for all ask so what's new for space x. What's the next projects for them. The biggest project for them is without a doubt starship it's this vehicle that's it's basically 2 stages you've got a 1st stage rocket this colossal vehicle that has $25.00 super powerful Raptor engines and that goes up and it like the Falcon 9 rocket will come back down and land. While they're talking about landing it right on the launch pad so they can turn around and watch it again within hours and then the 2nd part of the vehicle is the starship and it's something we've never seen before it's just fully reusable upper stage they could carry cargo or people in orbit and then it could also be George refueled in low earth orbit so more starships could launch fill it up and then this vehicle could go on to Mars. And you know we've never done this kind of orbital refueling we've never seen launches on this kind of scale and this is a rocket you know as as powerful as the Saturn 5 so it is truly revolutionary and they're having to break a lot of. Breaking a lot of new technology to try to bring it about and so they're they're they're they're having those battles and so when they have these. These landing in South Texas that's part of sort of fail our fly fail learn test fail why then I'm 60 and Richard Branson he's still in the pictures and he is his ambitions are much much less I mean the state ship to vehicle that he's doing and hopes to fly in space later this year next year it's sub orbital so that only requires about one percent of the energy in an orbital vehicle required and it's you know it's a flight of a of a few minutes of space versus if you get to orbit you know you can fly in orbit for years if you want to super Stay with us Eric we're going to come back and take our final hour to go with you in that means phone calls next on coast to coast am feeling last night by your radio grab your smartphone or computer and listen to hard radio pick up the free i Heart Radio apps in the App Store or go to I hard Radio dot com. I think I think I'm going to have Tom call you right back Ok maybe we can get you a better line and if not we'll use your cell phone so you will you hang up and Tommy get get him on a better line and because it was just too foggy for the rest of the hour if we can and then we're going to take your calls of course with him him this hour as we talk about his book liftoff which is an incredible story of below on Mars can you imagine for him we have you used Pay Pal It's a it's a system where you pay your bills or pay people through and through your computer through your smartphone and they collect a little fee whenever you do a transaction and that's how I am on Musk made his money but he made $180000000.00 when he sold out maybe sold out too soon who knows but I think we got Eric back on to Eric let's try to try it now right so I have a perfect perfect season so in Houston we had some some weather events in the 2000 and Trina said a bunch of evacuees from New Orleans this way and then Rita hit it the area and then Hurricane Ike And I just started reading more and more about weather and at the Houston Chronicle and decide if I was going to write about whether I don't know what I'm talking so I got a meteorology certification from the City State University so you never became a t.v. Meteorologist or anything like that I know my perception on line meteorologists mostly through very popular with the that's great it's a great feeling and what do you think of the weather these days is it out of whack or what well it's a little out of whack I mean we had we had this amazing winter storm across Texas for the 1st time ever oh my god 8 was under a winter storm warning. It for sure froze your wind turbines and then it went turbines natural gas plants My power was out George for 3 days outside was in the twenty's Oh my God Did your pipes boss. Now I know for sure we had a home that had been recently constructed so that these I don't know much about it but they apparently expand our contract with the temperature Oh that's good very lucky that's good let's take some calls let's go to David Ohio to get things started a David thanks for calling George is my 1st time ever getting through and I really you're in your gas and I want to bring up you an Eric and we have us there's a small little gas station here in Selma Hyatt and I got to meet Neil Armstrong Oh how cool is that and we in our little towns from out of population maybe 1500 and his car this is 3 years after he had the moon landing and red Mustang pulled up and me and some other boys were hanging around the gas station and we said that's snail Armstrong and we are. And I hurried home and I had David Bowie's 45 Space Oddity in the song 45 full even line and he said this is one strange astronaut on the cover you love it but but but he didn't talk long and show color hands and you know and I just want to know also I got a question for gas sure do you think I enjoy watching this show ancient astronauts do you think our quest to go back to space is cause originally that was our home and I'll hang up and listen to the answer. What do you think about space travel here well 1st of all just echo the caller's sentiments about Neil Armstrong and say that he was a real real gentleman and one of the reasons that NASA picked him to be the 1st test on the moon is because he handled himself so well and was really a pretty modest you know person you could see how something like being the 1st human to land on another world would be a good go to your head but he kept himself pretty low on Chad and I would have thought NASA would have used him more after they return from the moon but they really he he really harsh stopped in a he did he he left NASA he a professor and he tried to stay out of the limelight you know his crewmates Buzz Aldrin really struggled with that with the limelight he had a drinking problems and you know has is it's been it's been more difficult for him because he was a little bit less sort of centered Yeah and Neil Armstrong Well I was on the Larry King show years ago with Buzz and I mean great American he's still going strong but boy you tell him that he didn't go to the moon to help popular one. That's right and he also he also really doesn't like to hear that he was the 2nd man a no no he doesn't and I have been told and I guess it's public now that they've launched the lunar module to go back to the command module only because they couldn't push their button because of these big gloves they had on he had to use a big pen to stick it into a little tiny button hole to launch this thing yeah I think I think I've heard that story as well and that that sounds true because those gloves are hard to work at the you know the Apollo program there was a lot of gum and shoestring engineering that went into those vehicles to make that happen. Oh my God absolutely but can you imagine the computer power they had back in 1969 compared to what we have today our smartphones have more computer power than they had in that entire space ship. Without a doubt and I mean. You look at the Falcon 9 rocket now it can launch a crew autonomous Lee and that Dragon spacecraft can fly all the way to the International Space Station dock undocking come home without you or I mean you or I could fly the space station that and not have to touch a button the whole way George although we'd have to figure out how to use the space toilet you know but absolutely no absolutely So what do you think of extraterrestrial life Eric. I think it it's it's has to be out there George you look at our galaxy and there's you know banks the Kepler space telescope and other instruments we've discovered literally millions and millions of Earth like worlds around other stars just in our galaxy and to think that life couldn't have evolved on those worlds. It just seems to me that almost certainly it has had to been you know I'm glad that we're more and more looking for to try to find it to go down and down the Miami Carlos is with us Carlos taken away a good morning George is always a pleasure speaking to an anon or thank you the best for. Eric you're a fountain of knowledge and I want to bring something up to you Are you aware that NASA uses Currently I am thrusters which tops the speeds of 200000 miles an hour and the anti-matter rock to go hit speeds of 72000000 miles per hour which is incredible as a line looking into these or is she aware of the. Thrusters that NASA is using. So NASA is using the ion thrusters on its Dawn spacecraft that was the biggest spacecraft to use them so far and that was the mill. In that one out the yeah strike the Al to the asteroid series Medical for their destinations as well. Those take a long time to get moving quickly but once they do they think they're going to say they go but this is not really suitable for humans face like actually anti-matter testers I'm not aware of that Carlos. Could be one of those side 5 stories or dark stories that are hidden away do you think there's a secret space Morse out there. Now just because we would know about launches I mean there are now you know you can't you can't hide those can you you can't hide those I mean you could even hide them back in the Cold War You know we we would see the launches from the Soviet Union and so there's there's plenty of commercial satellites up there now George they're looking at the Earth all the time and so we can see what's happening what about the Space Force you agree with that concept Yeah I think it's a necessary evolution of what the Air Force was doing I mean space is going to be the domain of lots of activity in a century and certainly you know we talked about China during the last hour they're very interested in doing activities around the moon on the moon. And that we had a contest that space because we had to try to bring democratic norms to the moon and elsewhere and so yeah the Space Force is an important step in policing that for now it's mostly trying to protect our satellite assets and low Earth orbit have similar case of so that's what they're going to go after Yeah yeah that's exactly right that's in the near term that's the biggest threat next stop let's go to Carl in Boston Hey Carl thanks for calling a George thanks for taking my call Sure thing I had a couple questions in the comment. My question is do you think that we will send a i family into deep space or I don't know if it's quiet breathing a sigh of fire or not but sending a human family out with the said technology and in my common is the space x. Have anti-gravity technology the us government has or is all that still classified nothing when they're going. To space x. Is not have an anti-gravity technology least that I'm aware of. But. It's a great question about sending Ai space and human space. I think 2 things about that 1st of all with regard to Ai as we send humans further into space they lose contact with mission control you can you know you can talk to mission control before you do maneuvers at the moon but when it's 20 or 30 minutes to Mars you really need to be operating the spacecraft independently and so we're going to see increasingly sophisticated AI's in artificial intelligence in the a close when we start sending humans to Mars in terms of of how do we get humans to planets around other stars I think cryo freezing you know sort of putting putting Puma's on ice. Still there metabolisms they don't age is is May is a potential way that we do that because certainly in terms of getting there we don't have any way to get near the speed of light right now and it just seems like technologically that's going to be difficult to achieve who would have to find other ways to keep him and alive for hundreds if not thousands of years journeys just like these movies where they sleep in these capsules in the ships Yeah I mean the reason the movies are showing those is because we don't have any other way right now to really do that is theoretically possible to do crowd freezing isn't an amazing Eric the technology of like perseverance on Mars just incredible Oh yeah I mean you think about it George that's a one ton rover like the size of a small s.u.v. You know it's already traveled 70 meters on the surface of Mars you know strolling into the ground is looking for ancient life it's still going samples there's a helicopter on that thing that's going to fly around in a couple months I mean this is this is heavy stuff it's not easy to build back and landed on Mars and I think in a launch samples back to wash so the plan the plan right now is for that perseverance to go along and cash what it considers what scientists and others consider interesting rock samples maybe even maybe biological who knows maybe and really something the it's it's much easier to study in our sophisticated labs here on Earth and that's why we want to bring the rocks back the idea would be that there would be another mission that comes along collects those samples and then there's a small vehicle called the Mars ascent on Actually NASA just awarded a contract to Northrop Grumman to build that rocket and that rocket would last those samples back in the Mars orbit. Another stick you know rendezvous with in the space craft and then that would fly back to Earth perseverance too and like handed over to it yeah that's exactly right or they'd be allow it would like store it in places along its path in this so there's spacecraft so the rover will come along and Tecoma this is all going to take time and money so that we're probably not looking to sample the earth until about 2030 foot Nason in the earpiece Basij are working very hard on Mike in Denver Colorado Hey Michael go ahead a George good morning thank you so much for taking my call and Eric Wow what a great conversation tonight I had a comment and a question so right now there's a few countries that have really heavy interesting Marzan called an icy Mars you know this being the United Emirates China and the United States and you know all of these countries especially the Emirates which watch the Emirates hope orbiter hits seem to be working you know somewhat in conjunction to explore bars but you know air the question I want to ask you is you know how much importance do you think Iran Musk feels it is to have the United States actually be the 1st to have people land on Mars in colonize Mars 1st thank you. For the caller's very well informed George Oh yes he's a genius that is absolutely right that the u.a.e. Is is interest has like a 100 year plan to set on Mars. And it's very interesting them vicious about that in terms of is 11 months committed to sending humans from the United States to March 1st I think the answer has probably yes because his company is based in the United States and we have export restrictions so it's it would be very very difficult for space x. To just decide it was going to up and move to Abu Dhabi or Australia or. You know there's there's you can't really do that with the current export restrictions of base because rockets are basically could be weapons and most can't be exported and I think he's worked with NASA for 15 years they have a good relationship and so any partnership he's going to do ultimately will be with NASA or will be on his own Certainly with Americans I would think 1st time caller Scott in Hudson Wisconsin Scott let's get you in before the break go ahead. Thanks George I really appreciate it and I wanted to say one thing quick charts all the years I've listened to you and when you 1st took over from our You were great and you're still getting better and it's just amazing and programs like this wow it's gold in a sea of stuff you just don't want to listen to and Eric your fantastic I wanted to say a quick few things when I 1st saw you on months on You Tube you was being interviewed in the back of a van. On You Tube and I saw him and I said to myself really he's got it and I invested every dollar I had in South lot of the times it was $26.00 a share while I was I thought I was brilliant I sold all of it at 50. Not so brilliant but I want to say this Eric you've mentioned 2 things that a lot of people haven't thought about deal and it's his drive and that he brings you into the equation that I think has made him so successful at both Tesla and Space x. And I just wanted to mention quickly if you looked at the movies when we 1st did the Apollo mission we have the great films celebrating that a year ago you saw the guys in mission control those guys were in their late twenty's and early thirty's some of those guys who were building the main rockets on Apollo some of the management was in their late twenty's and a lot of our companies you know like United Launch Alliance basically it became collusion to just stand big and there's a fantastic You Tube video where you won must does a congressional hearing it's still on I just looked at it and he says that for $380000000.00 you can buy one launch on United Launch Alliance but for $100000000.00 you can get a launch from him and buy the g.p.s. Satellites at the same time and it's just a beautiful piece of work and so I think neat I think a lot has a titanium nose going for a head I think he's brilliant his drive and what he does with us he takes these birds. It is and he combined it with new technology like 3 d. Printing to make convoluted they didn't part rocket engine parts that you had to make $120.00 perfect it's the now you can print them he paid those guys and he said let's run for the roses if we can do it we're going to do it if we can't do it we're going to try and that is what really made him a middling and then a parable for America that you know a lot of our companies I think we became older and we started to rest on our laurels and then you and you Eric are bringing up the drive and that you it it's not just that those guys come in and they have a chance to work I think that the or rest that the that brought the house but now it's back then to me it shows the brilliant future that we that we all have so many places the airline can apply that formula from solar panels on rooftops and anything else than when we really start to go in an unfettered way I can't wait to watch what happens so thanks again guys thank you Scotty it's fantastic We're going to come back and take more phone calls with Eric Berger author of lift off in just a moment on coast to coast a coast insider's the new version of the coast to coast am amp is now available for i Phone and now Android Ford I don't want to listen live or on demand anywhere any time go to coast to coast am dot com and download are today. And welcome back to coast to coast George Norry with her final segment whether it burger His book is called lift off what do people get your book Eric is it all over the place it's all over the place you going to get a Kindle hardcover audible what every whatever you like I guess Jeff Bezos will take it off Amazon after tonight right. Now let's say it's a great book by the way it's fun What's your next project what are you working on now. I'm looking at a chance to writing about a small company is even called Rocket labs. Which also has an oral rocket and has a really fascinating back story of this just the small group of people in New Zealand to manage to come together and put together a rocket when you think are Robert Bigelow trying to develop a space hotel. You know he had a brilliant idea to try to license the NASA technology to make these inflatable habitats in space and it sounds crazy right you wouldn't really want to live in a balloon in space because you'd be afraid it it's going to hop but these is inflatables have are more durable than you might think and because they can fold in on themselves you can get a much larger place to live in in space and so you know the technology is coming along slowly like to see it move faster I think it's a great idea my bed room service will be very slow though. Room service will be very slow but you'll sleep sleep like a baby because all the troubles will be lifted away from you in line to gravity and it's going to end Charlotte North Carolina to get us started Hey Andy go ahead your yeah you know I just so you know that mention a even better. Might be right because every interview gives you more background information and you've got such a huge amount if you're a genius it may enable pull from and come up with the greatest questions ever sure enough thank you Edward. Mr Berger. Appreciate you letting us know. Your ideas about months with having spent as much tally if you had with him that's very interesting and I got 2 quick news items he tweeted today that they have just submitted to the f.c.c. Request to begin installing an operating terminals all moving vehicles and he pointed out it won't be the Tesla cars because it's too large but it's is for to be used by aircraft ships large trucks and army says well it's people who think you don't have to have relatives for these things and so forth and then I got to see these new Pattni just got us all 5 drawings it may be announced as early as tomorrow March 9th it's hard to believe he's got he's going to put a satellite up with no rockets no How's he going to do that he's got a kind of a slingshot with thing in the drawing where I guess a plane on Pullela Corden sling I'm up here. Better be we're up there you know. I agree with Berger I think Musk is a little ahead in this area but like you say George with obese bees is money can are the right yeah and some of the bucks out there like this and it works it's save money Malone What do you think of a slingshot launcher Eric why the caller is right Bezos has had that idea and this is this futuristic way of trying to launch as a caller says with this one shot mechanism I can tell you that in the near term he's very much going to be using rockets to get. He has his project hyper satellites in the space again this is a satellite Internet we're talking about earlier George this kind of a this is one other dimension of the current space race he's building a large rocket called nuke land and he hopes to fly that within a couple of years and I suspect that's how he'll initially at least get his satellites into space in the state of Washington we go Brandon is with us west of the Rockies Hello Brandon Hi George. First do on the Internet to treat him p s t You forgot to mention Story Corps left the right the Soviet Chief Designer the maker of Virgo Brown who was sort of our brown kind of partner in the Soviet. Right there then the caller that you're going to write a surrogate correlative was a genius in Russia and was largely responsible for them Feeding America into space both with Sputniks I like that you mention George as well as you're a good parents human spaceflight 1st flight and I don't really. Have a question for both of you did your 2 hear listen to the did you know here about the sounds that occurs your program Rover recorded and if so did you listen to it thank you yes we heard the sound I heard it on the generic Oh definitely I was on that news conference when they released the 1st pictures of the landing and all the sounds from the surface of Mars and it sounded great but you don't want to take your helmet off George because if you do your head will explode in about 10 seconds Yeah exactly exactly in Sky eerie isn't it yeah it sounded really I mean it you loved it here right I mean we never heard sounds from another world before social lockable kind of lonely actually. Well that was you know that was how Buzz Aldrin described the moon as magnificent desolation and I think that applies to Mars as well it's it's pretty lonely Could you imagine a national knob on Mars or even the moon standing there looking around at everything and just having nobody there. Screeching I mean yeah and that's. That's that's why what he wants to do is build these large starships to send dozens of people at a time so you can start to have a real settlement as opposed to a NASA mission which might have 2 or 4 astronauts so that's the goal to really make it so it's less lonely the next stop on the wild card line Mark is in Baltimore Maryland hello Mark Hi George thank you so much not a privilege once again to speak to you and Mr Berger the same to you your show articulate and open minded and and men right to the point that it's so refreshing and so my question is I've took 2 part question 1st is because I'll become Bush once the mystery mosque is making what if any impact is it actually having on what I think is known as the hard image program for NASA and the Space Launch System and then the 2nd part of my question was is the long Moscow doing anything about trying to discover cold fusion. So in regard to cold fusion Not that I'm aware of the caller also asked about the art of this program in the Space Launch System and Mrs NASA is program to try to return humans the moon by 2024 and right now the agency's plan to use a rocket built by Boeing for NASA called the Space Launch System and you always talk about how space x. Is disrupted things and and this rocket NASA has given Boeing 20000000000 dollars ga over the last decade and this rocket still hasn't flown once Chase Yeah so so what space x. Is done in building rockets is is is really starting to surpass what NASA has been able to do so I suspect ultimately if we do send humans to the moon for NASA it will be on space x. Rockets not in the space launch system just so you think there's that Soviet scientist was the one really responsible for Sputnik not the German scientists they brought over. America got the better German rocket scientist we did Iraq Braun brought his better people with him and there was a race to get him and we got there before the Soviets did it core Love was an absolute genius for sure so regardless of what we got they would have beaten us anyway down with him I think so yeah. Charles in Boston welcome to the show Hey Charles go ahead yeah hi hi Eric it's been a while since we spoke and but we've communicated a little bit recently. Out of this is a Charles Lorieau. That involved in the. Yeah hi Charles Yeah hi It took a moment then to recognize with face now we've got you down Charles Yeah thanks for having Erica. Sure origin I'm sure is that I notices and has that book I'm on it for and I'm definitely one of the. Again yeah it is great. I wanted to point out that. There were a number of us small group of folks full for Old couple of decades or so before you on came along were pushing to try to get. Alternatives to NASA going just like a lot of. Us or just like you know Iran bagels and the whole crowd was looting. You know basically the whole commercial space idea. And and it was a tough it was a tough road to hoe because people were so convinced that space was equivalent to NASA and and vice versa and but. It's just amazing now to see what's going on daily with us they said x. And analysed a lot of progress and also with the folks like well good lab which I would mention . But that's all true Eric you want to react to that yeah so Charles is exactly right you know in the one 971980 s. There were definitely efforts to build up a commercial space. Industry but it really was for remained more promise than reality and what one of you on 6 months great achievements is that he showed that commercial space could become profitable. And Charles is right establishing the established industry didn't want them to come along and you know and as I write in the book I mean that almost crushed them the state is almost crushed them and you know space x. Very nearly failed on multiple occasions so you know we're lucky to they were lucky that they made it through and because they were successful now we've seen a bunch of other space companies come along with a similar idea of using private capital to get us further out into space and next up Brian's in the state of Washington what Welcome aboard Bryant Lachlan thinking Eric I work for a company I won't say the name for the privacy the to figure it out. And stayed at work for this commercial airliner company and is it a big one it's a big one isn't it Brian it has kind of a big one out and what I was going to ask was like the competition 'd like say for space like with a lawn I think competition is great for this particular company I'm talking about say. They're going against us and how they you know what of course lawsuits and everything else they go through but. Great for I was wondering how Iran likes competition to strive for I think you end up with a better technology when you've got 2 people going on out it. Then just save one company alone going out and maybe they will get like stalemate so that that's what I have competition is healthy is it not Eric Oh without a doubt so the Washington based airline company that your caller does not want to mention was in direct competition with space x. And NASA recognized the value of that so after the space shuttle retired they picked 2 company Space x. And Boeing to build transportation systems to replace the shuttle to get astronauts into low Earth orbit and NASA knew that by having Boeing in space x. Working competitively that it would make the program go faster and in fact it did Space x. Ultimately one that competition they had their 1st team to launch last year the following is coming along and probably will launch humans later this year for the 1st time I remember the movie that Tom Hanks was in he was an astronaut and they're all sitting in the space capsule ready to launch and they said how do you feel knowing that we're sitting on a spaceship built by the lowest bidder. Yeah I mean that's that's that's Yes that was a great movie Apollo 13 and it does make you it does make you wonder I mean it's space like very risky and it's not hard and it's not easy to get break out of Earth's gravity well for sure 1st time caller Jerry in Waco Texas welcome Jerry you doing guys Ok I worked for Boeing in the satellite division alsa gun and we used space x. To send those satellites up into space so there wasn't competition but we did use them and also assist wasn't very far from Hawthorne which is the headquarters of space x. I drive by there on a Sunday morning of 6 o'clock 7 o'clock in the morning on a Sunday and there'd be 2030 people engineers young people coming out of the offices and I'm thinking wow those people working night and day and the 3rd thing was I worked on the clutch lever toll in the Marshall Islands in space x. Had a launch pad there which you don't hear about anymore you know if that's been abandoned . For secret even for special projects. Yes that's that's brilliant because when I talk about when space x. Had to leave and a burger find a place they did go to the quadrille in 'd a coal 'd to launch from a small island there called on the left and so it was extraordinarily difficult to launch a rocket in the middle of Pacific Ocean I mean imagine George you have to get liquid oxygen which is at you know hundreds of degrees below freezing and the only way to get there is to put on a container ship and ship in Los Angeles to Hawaii then to Khwaja it's half of it boils off and these all these challenges the caller asked about all molecular island space x. Launch from their 5 times and then 2009 day left and when they left they had to take everything away and return it to its natural state all of the concrete there had to be crushed in the rocks smaller than one inch across and so it's been abandoned However I can tell you there's another rocket company it's called Astra that may start launching from all Molech within a year or 2 so if that could be coming back Erica since you've been doing this fascinated with space so and we only got 30 seconds left what is man the most challenging aspect of what you've covered so far. You know it's it's been difficult to cover space x. Frankly George because Iran is a pretty pretty private cars and keep the company pretty but so it's been a real privilege to finally crack that egg shell and really get to understand the story behind the story this is really the 1st major book on space x. And then it's certainly the 1st one to go really deep into the Falcon one of those early struggles that ultimately paid off the debt yeah Super Eric thanks and once again for people who want to contact you they can do so through your website.
