Magic Johnson is the president of the Lakers I have always felt that you guys had been placed by her father in an extraordinarily complicated position where she was basically her brother's boss I don't think I'm great he's a guy who's going to say next year is my last year right give me go up or you're going to wait around for what we do yesterday. Not that much just want to meet your golf tournament green jacket white and charity golf but that's the other one they can really. Keep my kid. My kid my presented by Progressive Insurance I guess on the Shell Oil fulfillment sigh and it's pretty obvious that after a career of making himself the baster one of the best players in the history of basketball on the court and then a 2nd act of equal or even greater success off at the act that would finally convince the Lakers to put Magic Johnson in charge of the whole organization was smashing a pie and go like Thanks that was only a week ago goal like and to me the timing of this cannot be coing to completely agree his actions here the way to control the way he called himself the magic man. Now smashing in my face I really think that over the top that says you know what we were thanks to this and make it the president of basketball operations but we're going to do it sooner rather than later we think he's ready so funny as we continue to show that fine and that was just a great day it was a whole new way to go now here's another great day as Magic Johnson is now at the apex of the Los Angeles Lakers So there's 250 to 2 totally separate sides to this one of them is an almost Shakespearean 5 family dynamic that was put in place by the late Dr Jerry Buss who was one of the most beloved figures in the history of American sports executives he was really well liked in and outside of Hollywood and in the league and all that and that's great but the reality of the situation is he put them in a tough spot. Did he put Jeannie in a position where she is in charge but her brother in the most important job at the organization and basically said if he screws this thing up you've got to fire back and listen anyone we all have families and no matter how functional anyone's family is it's always at least a little dysfunctional and I don't know if you know workings of this family I don't know I don't know but that's a position I would never ever have wanted to be in in the 1st completely a green you know this was the 3rd year of Jim but saying I'll give it 3 years if I'm not doing well I'll step down well he didn't get a full 3 years that keep us posted on it and put magic in charge as soon as magic was made himself and I think we all knew where this was going so to me and I don't know if it's obvious it wasn't there I'd like to know the conversations that went on before or even Making Magic Johnson the consult them because you don't make magic it's often Mitch Kupchak and Jim Buss think oh he's just going to come help us out I think there has to be some knowledge there beforehand that he's not coming in to just consult well as some of these questions now do someone who's as connected to the Lakers as anyone John Allen from e.s.p.n. L.a. 710 joins us on the shell Pennzoil performance line shoes Shelvey power nitrile plus premium gas for the best total engine protection you can get good morning John . Good morning Mike and Mike how are you guys were great I got me and say the magic side of this in the political side of this in the future is one part of the story the boss family dynamic is another what can you tell us about the way this thing played out Jeannie apologized to Laker nation yesterday basically saying this was so hard for her to do she recognizes you probably waited too long to do it what can you tell us about the inner workings of that situation. Let me start Mike by addressing something go a kid said you know Mike you said I wonder what conversations went on before that it was pretty well documented out here that there was very little conversation between Keith side of the building and side of the building and that's where this rift all started giving other brother and sister they're not exceptionally close and some could argue that she's a lot closer to magic than she is to own brother magic and Jim about the same age when Magic came to the Lakers. When she grew up together they were you know he was over doc about the house that you shield closer in many ways certainly in Laker areas with magic than she does with Kim So your instinct go like that when Magic was hired as a consultant that this was just a giant boulder went out of jail. Secondly the way that dynamically set up and greet you talked a little bit about it was Dr about this perfect world she would handle the business side Kim would handle the basketball side in that way he took care of 2 of its 6 children all the children are involved in the team in one way or another but he thought it would work cheaper in the basketball and she ran the business but he had to put somebody at the top at the top of the Cheney had to make somebody to governor and he did that with me when she's the one that told me once Dr about to Dick Cheney as my head she has my head for business she knows how to run that thing and clean. Try guys as hard as she possibly could to make that vision work I think that most people probably would have made a change a couple of years ago but Keith wanted really really hard to make this work and she didn't want anybody to be able to come to her at the end and say well look you cut your brother's played up about her if you give him a chance and I don't think anybody can say that I think she gave him one bite your chance and one that they continue to slide and free agents and big name players would move around the beat and they wouldn't come to the way careers she thought she had to get star power in there and that's what happened yesterday John tell it take magic out of the equation of magic was not in this equation with this has been the last year of general on the show. I did say possibly I'll say this Mike that they like. Everybody in the building really like the direction that taken the team they think they've found their coach for the next 4 or 5 years that wasn't the case previously there was a lot of division when they hired Mike Brown when they hired Mike and Tony. Even though I've got people rooting for Byron Q Well but it was universally accepted that Kate is the guy it is what would you want to find anybody in the wake of building on the business or the basketball side that doesn't think it's going to be a really successful coach in this league I want your question this way if magic hadn't come up when he did I'm not sure what is happening now at the All-Star break rather than at the end of the season but I think it would have been likely at the end of the year so why was a surprise that magic was put in this position how about the g.m. Rob link that you know a high powered agent had Kobe Bryant other big ones out there as well to leave that agency that he started and become the general manager and magic to not wait to see what other maybe more experienced general manager would have been available. Well you could look at Mike the other guy's work experience general managers that are available they could have got if you were talking about the Lakers here they did look into getting Bob Meyers out of Golden State it's been reported to be a little shake up in Portland with somebody that they thought might get could take the problem day or go like it if you go after one of those in the middle of the season especially then you've got to give them an asset if you guys remember when Doc Rivers left Boston and came to the Clippers to be that kind of coach slash g.m. They had to give the number one pick up the Lakers don't have a lot of assets but another team would want in exchange for a g.m. And that's that's the 1st answer your question the 2nd answer is you don't mind the pulling guys has been basically around the Lakers for the last 20 years as Copi teacher I've seen Robert more games than then some of our own front office people I mean you know their team really really well Davi asleep very connected with their front office because he would be a change for our best player throughout the 20 year run so it's not as if he just plucked some Each out off the street and threw him in there he kind of had one foot in the weaker family for the last 20 years anyway Mike and I presented by Progressive Insurance John Allen from e.s.p.n. Now my 710 is with us on the shell Pennzoil performance line interesting Lee one of the dynamics that has been at play for the Lakers in their struggles lately was the decision to reward Kobe Bryant at the end of his career with his big contract obviously pulling her right in the middle of all of that at the time all of us said it may very well round up not being the best thing in the long term best interest of the like is because of the salary cap ramifications and the potential that it would have to for the younger players not to play as much whose decision ultimately was that what role I guess is what I'm asking you here the genie play in that decision was she in favor of it. From what I've heard that was one decision that they actually both agreed on it would be difficult for me to overstate you guys the amount of money generated by Kobe Bryant when he played here yeah it's not I mean think about it we won 5 titles we don't win any without him. He was you know it's the old Billy Joel line I know that it's me they're coming to see we kept our gate . And our kit prices at the n.b.a. Highest levels the entire time you played at 3 I think that's why I can explain this is think about last year when the waker had a 17 win team it was an absolute disaster the waker in Golden State won 73 games last year they were the best traveling road show maybe the n.b.a. Has ever seen the Lakers were number one in road attendance last year with a 17 when team now that's a copy 1 of the brand and Colby but it's mostly Coby and Dr Bob you know what she told me once was it's what my dad would have done to take care of Colby and what you know you've made the point that they made in the highest paid player in the league he actually took a pay cut on his last contract he was making $30000000.00 a year and they gave him he said look we can we should 6000000 off your salary for 2 years can we give you 24 for 2 years for your last cue and to give you 30 for your last 2 and maybe we can get some more players and Harry didn't work he took a small pay cut but Keeney and Jim on separate occasions both told me that's what my dad would have done this guy made us hundreds of millions of dollars and we felt like we needed to take care of him Well Colby be part of this rebuilding process as well. It's hard to say Mike I used to say that the minute Kobe dropped that Mike in his last game and walked up the floor that we would never see him it's Staples Center again he so driven that whatever next project he was onto I thought that's where we would find him but I think you will now I think with Rob pulling in charge and he's very close to Rob I think we may see Colby in some type of role you want it won't be at the top levels but I get I think you could maybe take it will be a recruiter that maybe Rob will get him on the phone when what a free agent is close and you know and the Lakers will work out a way to let you know if he did fight or I didn't think so before yesterday now I do know I feel will be around in some capacity I just don't know what is my good my John Allen is with us from l.a. I'd Sanand we have to turn our attention to the future of the Lakers safe to say that Magic Johnson's biggest job is going to be to recruit a great free agent and the era of the super max and all of the money in the new collective bargaining agreement that goes to players if they stay with their current cities that's obviously a different kind of challenge so what names should we be expecting to hear is Russell Westbrook a real possibility in a year and a half to Marcus Cousins what names are being floated about who do you think Magic Johnson will identify. I don't even think he knows Greenie I think they're what the what I do a lot is if an a list player moves like for example 2 days ago De Marcus Cousins moved if and he was a player moves they want to be in on it they feel like they have enough assets where it any major name moves any name you want to throw out there you know why spread Curry and O'Brien you know nobody expects these guys to change teams but if they decide they're going to the Lakers want to be in on that conversation and one of the things that I thought was interesting yesterday was we had Magic Johnson on our show and I asked him how involved are you in the book because in discussions and he said he wasn't at all that he was completely out of it that Mitch and Jim just handled that and I thought that was strange I don't know that I need to do it with the timing of yesterday but if they were trying to negotiate a deal for the market's cousins and didn't consult magic that may have been the straw that broke the camel's back magic magic and that he wasn't involved I don't know obviously now moving forward he's going to be involved with everything and even Rob police are going to decide Ok do we take our young talent because the kid keep in mind the Lakers have had 4 lottery there were 3 lottery picks and 2 other guys who kind of head on their roster now they may get another lottery pick next year that their top 3 protected and it's complicated but they may get another number down now if you take those picks those guys as a collective and offer them to somebody to get you know Jimmy Butler or Paul George or Westbrook if he moves that's going to be the biggest decision that magic and Rod need to make when do we fire the bullets in our gun and who do we use them on and yesterday that decision would have been mentioned today it's Magic's the actual Russell. Brand name and Julius Randle which of the 3 in your opinion is the best bet to become a real top level star caliber n.b.a. Player. A gram only because I think that he's just scratching the surface he's 19 we have a little bit of a book now on Russell and Randall and it's kind of ridiculous that even say that because Russell is 20 he turns 21 on Friday so he's going to grow 2 but and I think really says 22 but we've seen those guys play 100 or so n.b.a. Games now we know what rest Russell is kind of a combo guard guys he's kind of a cross between the one in the 2 could take off and become you know this you know this unbelievable player it just hasn't happened in 100 games so you can't tell Randall is a is a bull in a china shop he's unbelievable with the ball he looks like a young Charles Barkley at times but other times you realize unlike Barkley he doesn't have a great outside shot and he doesn't go to both go both ways he only goes left so you've got to work those 2 things out if he works those things out he's a possibility but engram greeny to answer your question I can't see a weakness in him he defends he shoots threes he's long he's got handle I've seen him dunk on top of 2 guys if Ingram puts it all together he's got the potential to be the best guy in the Los Angeles Lakers and this is one of those franchises Mike that when they're interesting is good for the Leon things just got very very interesting John Arlott e.s.p.n. Always 7 cent Thanks a 1000000. Anytime But I mean I can look it up on your Coffee County when impressive Thanks John I preach it you are appreciating what I went through to win that title Thank you I know greatness when I see it and that was great there you go see that I think it was trending at one point yesterday on Twitter as well as you know here on your part so what do you think so he said as far as the decision to end I said at the time I thought it was the right thing to do because I think as a franchise you kind of stand for something to have Kobe finish it out there 20 years whatever it is work out a number that everyone was comfortable with if it meant Saturday if it if indeed it did and who knows if it did or it didn't set in the franchise back a little because they still got these high draft picks so they still have Randleman still having them and they still have Russell and they're developing now and he just said 1001 to 20. Was it the right thing for the bus family to do here's a thing if it didn't hold the team back in any way shape or form go ahead but it does then I don't agree with it not right I don't he got paid while he was doing all of that I got paid handsomely while doing all of that so but if it had no effect at all I have a ball pay him whatever you want it's still a business decision Kobe have done a ton ton force and we paid you a ton for it we need you to take a little bit less to help us go forward as you leave here I mean who's going to understand that more than Kobe you think Kobe is going to hold the ransom note them for ransom I mean I wouldn't think he would you know I know he was as John said he was asked to take a $6000000.00 pay cut off the 30 mill but I don't know you know all the intricacies of the money I've heard both sides of it I've heard it cost them some and I heard no no he didn't cost them anything well he didn't cost them anything there's no conversation here you pay whatever you want but if it was a business decision where you had to physically say well this is going to cost us a little bit but we feel we need to do it I don't agree with it I don't I just don't agree with it well so there are so many different ways to view it right at the end of the day what exactly is loyalty in sports and in which. Direction is it supposed to flow when I say you tell me I mean we don't know where that situation would have gone and maybe they did I don't know I should ask John that that they trying to cope but you know listen we paid 18 mill I mean can we can we not I don't know that you got a guy in San Antonio who helped them out the last 2 years with zeal Tim Duncan did Tom Brady has done it in New England I'm not saying a player should have to do that look at Le Bron after was in Miami he said I'm done with that I'm getting the absolute max I can get now I took my pay cuts in Miami that's not going to happen anymore so where does it go should a player do it should or should a team do it at the end of the day everybody is out for themselves that's how it works in pro sports too to that point as well with someone like Kobe or whomever there is no way I think to fully compensate the superstar n.b.a. Player what he is worth I agree with that any other sport athlete in any other is really compensating you probably have to give him 5060000000 a year I mean to really say we're going to send you off the way you should be but instead it's a $6000000000.00 pay cut to $24.00 mil so at that point if it truly is a business thing and you're costing players how do you know do you have the conversation that says you know listen we have to move forward after you you know I so I I see I'm just an age so many of the make so much more money away down the game like they built a stadium an arena in Chicago because of Michael Jordan the United Center standing there because of Michael Jordan how much money did the Chicago Bulls make off with Michael Jordan now Michael Jordan parlayed everything that happened his life he's a billionaire and how now he's a unique situation obviously because he's got the jump man a Nike and everything else Le Bron James is probably going to be a billionaire Kobe Bryant has probably got 56 I have who knows how many hundreds of millions sure list Sure but if you actually just look at at specifically what they get paid to play basketball and how much they are we. Worth just cents not even close I agree with that not even close I absolutely agree with that yeah and 11 change because they're never going to put it into it yeah sure you can pay Colby 60000000 this year but he would be worth it if you just opened it up to all of that he probably financially would be worth if there was no salary cap in basketball you know 0 salary cap or what that guy brings in I would look Bron James get I have no clue I mean I have no idea I would like my dad would you know what they bring in I mean forget even my area what does the highest paid player in baseball get paid right now while it's it will stand and sign the $325000000.00 for 10 years for I 10 years that sets over 30 percent 32000000 I'll go to the start I think the highest soccer player isn't as a Ronaldo or maybe one is like 80 some $1000000.00 a year I think they're like $8088000000.00 a year they're getting paid you don't think they're not bringing in a ton of money that they get paid a lot more Those are the higher case your eyes are those are the highest paid athletes I believe you know it is is those soccer great to make I believe it's already 1000000 here and comparatively speaking and no one is asking you to feel sorry for them but the Bron James and Steph Curry and Kevin Durant's they make a lot less on the court now they make a. A fun option off the court Bron James going to be a billionaire billionaire athlete and what 80 percent of that money is going to come off the court yes I'm going last 70 percent I don't know I don't know the percentage you know the next deal he gets he's going to get paid $3040000000.00 a year try to Nish out his career I'm sorry for yeah but I mean so you know that's a lot of money but you know let's add a $1000000000.00 at a point is made and go to a 1000000000 it's going to be maybe 6070 percent Mike and Mike want to remind you if you missed anything today including really good magic conversation with him like Larry and our number 2 or anything else you could listen to all 4 hours of Mike and Mike on demand in the e.s.p.n. Great. Thank God created a race back in December and we've been practicing and a little bit with problems by the last of the last couple months you know where to go and we did qualify for that they call 500 last Sunday starting out for the 2nd place I can make you feel your perch that. We're not about and for all the obvious reasons clearly and I know that yours is a sport where there is always danger and it is the job of the racer to put that completely out of his mind but we just watch some of the interview that you did where you talked about the really dark times with your concussion symptoms and all you wanted to do was come back to living a normal life so tell us where did that then transition once you started to feel normal again how quickly were you able to make the decision that yes you were definitely going to get behind the wheel again. Well I had to go talk to my doctors about their feet on and. I worked with the same doctors this is a committee Collin but it's Burt that worked with the Steelers and I didn't fail n.h.l. Thing there. So he's had he sees a lot of other different athletes and and even you know kids and I'll catch them so they got a whopping going up there a lot of information I've been working with him. My previously diagnosed concussion if you have 12 and have been a confidant and contact and she knows me really well knows my history he devaluated me more than 2 dozen times. Throughout both of those processes and that hours and hours of conversation and talking over the phone. I had to go talk to Mickey and he supported me to get back in the car and you know he's he's you know unfortunately for those doctors that are in that position similar to Mickey they've had to shut down before football players or what have you that have gone through this and they've had to you know they've had to tell them the bad news that their their careers over. The suggest they continue to compete and so I left that in his hands with that I'm good read away whatever you decide what I think I should do. But we got to a point. In our recovery that he said he felt good if I wanted to continue. That he'd feel good about it and confident that you know I was healthy and go out there and put myself at additional risk any more risk I guess. I was originally face and just like any other driver out there. He just basically came down to whether I had the passion to do it whether I had to drive and the want to be out there and course I still do this is a volunteer only current contract and I had every intention of honoring that agreement with my valise and we had already discussed talking about an extension. To this contract I had every intention of continuing to write before that before the injury so. It was an easy decision once my doctors gave me the confidence that could go out and do it you know down you look at athletes when they get injured and what athletes are used to I don't went through enough surgeries in my career whether it's a shoulder or knee or whatever it is an elbow an ankle you know how to rehab that you're given a rehab program you work out that joint you want the muscles around it and you get back on the track on the field on the court whatever talk about this all from the head injury side of it the rehab of that and just it's got to be frustrating because of the timing aspect of I know an elbow is 4 to 6 weeks but man with a concussion it can be a way longer than you think because of the rehab process yeah everybody kind of respond differently the brain the computer. There's a you know 1000 things in marriage you get get hit and upset and. You Yeah and one thing you know one if you have if you injure. The ocular part of your brain can affect the balance if I can't understand. The horizon and once level then my balance can be affected even though my the balance portion of my brain isn't particularly part is injured since the ocular is having trouble that can affect several other areas of the brain so the doctor has to be sharp enough to understand exactly where to go to treat injury what but what type of exercises physical or mental or visual to improve that particular part of the brain and then everything else starts to tie stuff together and work as one unit. And everybody like if they have by the 2nd if only I could you know 10 people could get sane had the same type of accident but had different symptoms and a different type of different types of therapy and an assistant and the best part I mean the best thing you can do as an athlete or anybody who's going through this even if my doctor sees people from the workplace all walks of life the best thing you can do is be completely transparent to your doctor because concussions are hard to see an easy to mask and. You just need to be very transparent with your doctor about everything you're feeling so he can have a better understanding of how to target your therapy and get you back to back to health and that could be you know some people can get well and you know just a few weeks some people take 6 months other people thought to have struggled for years and it's just. You just have to keep bad you just had to keep keep working and believe in the believe in the process believe in the therapy you're doing and work hard at it Mike Mike and Dale Jr Again the Daytona 500 this Sunday 2 o'clock eastern time I saw that Richard Petty had some comments where he suggested he thought it would be in your best interest to retire I wonder did you have people close to you in your life who were telling you that it would be their preference that you step away from this now permanently and if so what did you tell them. No one close to me made those comments directly to me or. You know I would have that conversation with now no one come to me and I mean that you know one of my close family members or friends no one came to me and asked me to sit out or stop. Actually it was kind of it was kind of through my doctor's orders that I would not have a whole lot of conversation about that particular subject with anyone when I was when once my doctor started to understand all of the strains attached to that type of decision for me with my partner sponsor family everything that is included and affected by that kind of decision to retire. He said you know what that's going to be a ton of stress that's going to slow down your your ability to get well any kind of stress is going to slow down your brain's ability to heal. And these therapies and exercises you're doing are going to affect improvement and affect your brain as well so he ordered anyone in my inner circle to drop all contact with me not don't ask me how I'm feeling Don't ask me and I'm getting better because you do too much stuff analyzing as it is every day you're walking around on is that different is this different reacting different to be with what was that every night of the day yourself analyzing yourself with your symptoms are they improving You don't need everybody else around you bring in that bring more that on more that stress on and we don't need to worry about racing or anything else when you're ill sick all you need to worry about is getting well and then you can start talking about you know material things and whatever your job is get back to that if it's a possibility so we set all that down and I was glad for my doctors to give me that voice to say look everybody just. Sit down for a while I'm going to work on me and once I start feeling better we can talk about. Those other things that aren't quite as important right now so all you've been through now you're back in the cars you mention the front row your 2 time winner of this event is there any other goal but to win this for you being back in the car again is it just is it still I just to win if that's the goal my goal is to run every race the here. You know that. In the past. If injury lasted much longer than anticipated and all the any any type of similar issue that I faced in the past with the cousins was maybe a month. Of rehab and before you fail 100 percent. You know you symptoms hung around for maybe a week or 2. A lot a lot of work went into this to get right and get back and. Just a ton of stuff went through when they went into this and my goal really is to just be able to compete be able to finish and run every right this season my I guess my concern really is not believe you have to remain healthy. That's probably number one in my mind any time I'm outside of the car that's my main concern is do this at a consistent level like I want to be able to compete beyond the season so I want to be able to answer that question can I sign an extension can I wait for a few more years it's what I want to do and so if I can get a season healthy that gives me all the Continent a world to keep continuing to drive. Because that's what I want to do I want to race and. You still have you know when you're healthy you can set those other goals like wins and I think it's but. To me the priority really is just to get back to where I'm confident myself to stand the every day. Where they are from and got the car and go you know that you know that are inevitable. Well that's great candor from you and we very much appreciate it look I know your fans will be thrilled to see you back on the track this week and we wish you good luck and good health thank you very much Dale thanks. Thank you thank you again I yeah to talk about that the next time is a huge Washington fan and obviously we go we had questions on our list of microcosms and all that but this is so much more important than any of that let me pause on that I think so much there to react to welcome back in just a moment that was extraordinary candor from one of the best known athletes in America today about where he is and where he's going will come back and react in just a moment Mike in my. He wanted to play a designated cherry picker member that he was going to play for guys and be friends and one guy enough and I thought Ok insane but I like the fact that someone is kind of thinking that way willing to think differently and somewhere between there and now I realize no no no no he's doesn't have any idea what he's doing so you've got that you've got to don't say what I said because you just begging people to pick you apart if you were so worried this trade was getting it pulled off the table well then you're going to get anything for him anyway so there's a nuff boy to go around for everyone but this was as much about Sacramento just saying we need to start over without this guy as it was about New Orleans saying we can now put together a championship team around this guy more from Mike and Mike tomorrow morning on e.s.p.n. . App for the rest of us around the country just joining us as we react to our interview with Dale Earnhardt which got a great reaction from people and I thought his candor was just remarkable Mike and you were saying that a lot of times doctors might clear an athlete right and then and then you have decisions to make that was my take on it was if I'm Dale in his situation the doctor can tell me I'm Ok to go but that doesn't necessarily mean I want to go back in there the courage that it requires I would think and the mental toughness to just put out of his mind everything he's been through and for those who followed his story I mean he he went through some really dark times lost his balance lost his young at times has trouble with his vision I mean really serious concussion symptoms I mean ask you a crazy question if you were him would you get back in the car well as as I continue to say a lot of it is where are you in your life he just got married you know if you're married you have kids where are you how long have you done and how much money have you made that's all relevant that's all relevant if you you asked me you know the thing when I saw was in the game was the spinal injuries right yeah what we saw a few ago while I was playing and that was the fear and you asked me when the show started 18 years ago you know if I if I hurt my my spine taken to the hospital got cleared and got cleared to go back and play what I play you know if the doctor said yeah there you can go but you're cleared but there's a fear there I had said when I'm young and I'm single and you know kids I may have the thought process and early in my career not really established yet of saying you know what I'm to keep doing this if I've been in the league 810 years I've made some money I have a. Wife I have 23 kids you may think long and hard about it so I've to me that's the issue here now Dale's been in this a long time a lot of money is one of the most well known people out there and he's deciding to go back in so it's it's all on what your thought process is I mean remember your he didn't just get there he's been doing it all it's life care it's definitely difficult to say I'm done it's the hardest thing in the world is specially when and where as I continue to say we're still learning about the head injuries but at some point you feel fine again when you feel fine your instinct this is say now I can go do what I do and in this case I can go drive I've been cleared I went through as a as a tedious process it was a hard process but I've come out the other end the doctor since all is good so a lot of there are drivers there are athletes that would think why wouldn't I now go back in there and I think that's a thought process but but as we learn more and say well can there be effect one more years down the road 5 years down the road 20 years down the road 15 years down the road that's what each person has to decide for themselves of do they want to take that risk but the one of the most difficult things in the world for an athlete to do when they heal from an injury is to not go back out and do what they do because they're healed they feel fine my elbows dislocated I waited 6 weeks my elbow was fine you're cleared to play the 1st thing I'm doing is put my pads on I'm going to play right you know but this is obviously it's a different scenario with your head but it still doesn't change the mentality of the athlete that says injury cleared play no matter what the sport is so quite honestly on this as technology gets better as a quickly gets better as knowledge gets better it still falls 'd on the athlete a do I recognized that I got. Here and I need to take myself off my field of play do I still try and hide it do I get back on sooner than I want to do I take the power to the correct precautions the whole way that's still a lot of it because you add when you get to that level you are so ingrained to play with pain and sometimes to play with injury as a One thing my dad taught me and I tried to teach my kids there's a difference of hurt and injured and unfortunately in the line is blurred and a lot of times you'll play injured when instead of you could play when you're hurt but playing when you're injured to different thing now or in a whole new ball game now we're talking about head injuries to where now you feel better but man there can be long term effects on this saying different then you know when I would have to get a new knee you know there can be different things associated with this but still the mentality of that athlete is so in graine over the years and decades they've been doing it it's hard for them to jump out of that and that's probably one of the many reasons why I never was because I don't I can't imagine myself getting that out of my head you never went through a period of time where you were paralyzed then he came back oh never to know he's been through a period of time where he has suffered these symptoms and if you seen the stories and they were really difficult so I would never judge a person's decision as to what he wants to do and while he should if that's what he wants to do anyway the Daytona 500 is this weekend I will definitely be rooting for him everybody thanks so much as spending the day here will see it back and better than having a mile the same time same place Mike and I.
