Over you know a 17 year span and since that deal sent them careening off a cliff the only team with a worse when percentage than them over the last 4 years has been the Sam Hinkie trust the process Philadelphia 76 ers and what that deal did was take a sledgehammer to the foundation that the Lakers had right because not only were you not acquiring anything new not only were you hamstrung financially by that but the development of your younger players took a hit because Colby was Kobe Bryant and demanded the ball the way he did and controlled things the way he did he was terrible he was a terrible basketball player the last couple years of his career he what what and not only was he terrible just as far as what he gave you on the court but he hamstrung the development of anything that could have been considered young talent coming. There are some parallels there man I mean it's pretty striking now Jim Voss has gone in favor of Jeanie Buss It's not like Jim Dolan was gone when Phil Jackson took over but it kind of he went into the shadows only emerging when Charles Oakley when it was taken in handcuffs from Madison Square Garden there are some parallels there well I mean listen gene your boss is one who we talked about had her role in that Kobe Bryant contract that was the seminal moment in the downfall of the Lakers here now all the sudden brings in a big name former star to come in and be a fill that same role potentially acting is that human shield between her and decisions that we know she may still play a role in basketball operations so like I said a lot of the difference just comes back to everyone really likes Magic Johnson he's a really nice likable personal guy and so he's going to get the benefit of the doubt lot of this and we're going to focus on Phil because he's most recent We know there have been plenty of other plays I mean Mitch Kupchak who was the g.m. Before this and was very successful like we talked about was a former player and a guy who transition to that role much more gradually maybe did it the quote unquote right way in a lot of people's eyes but still there have been former players that have gone on I mean hell one of the guys that Magic Johnson is going to get to go up against right now on Larry Bird as a front office guy we get to renew that rivalry in a different avenue enjoyed degrees of success right there most notably with back a few years ago when they were really pushing the heat in some of those Eastern Conference playoff series and another tweet from Magic Johnson this one from December 19th the 2014 the Dallas Mavericks trade for rays on Rondo puts them in position to be a contender in the Western Conference. One way the parallels end with Phil Jackson though least you can give Magic Johnson credit for this you can understand his tweets because my favorite ever this one comes from March 6th of 2014 and you can't call this bad analysis there's I mean it's it's correct the only way San Antonio Miami don't win the championship is if neither team makes the finals it is ironclad you can attack nothing about that and that's what you can look forward to because you're right that's what that really is if you look at the comparisons with Phil Jackson everything's been critiqued cryptic you've worried about the lack of communication between him and star players there's no problem in communication with Magic Johnson you're going to understand everything that he's saying right now it's just going to be a matter of all right that marries up to then the day to day basketball operations thing that you know he's going to be learning on the fly but one thing I think we can all expect from magic is that he's going to be forthright and he's going to communicate what his plans are with everyone involved when you talk about the parallels with Phil Jackson Another one is that he hasn't done the job before you know Phil was a great coach that didn't make him a great team president as we've seen and Mitch Kupchak did win for n.b.a. Titles as Lakers g.m. Did get them to the playoffs 12 times since he took over in 2000 I wonder if you feel better if Magic Johnson came in and replaced Jim Buss and you kept Kupchak because another wrinkle here is they're bringing in Rob Politico who's a very famous sports agent to be the general manager of the team and he hasn't done that job either and Brian when Moore says that. That will actually be the more important one you'll see magic with broad based decision. Yes So he's got an understanding he's got unique relationships even from a different vantage point which there's an interesting avenue to all of that for him but the bottom line is and like we've seen in New York when you bring someone as high profile as magic into this position it was made a very clear that even though he's going to allow that to go on he's going to allow the people under him there are a bit of agency the basketball decisions are still finally signed off on by him and everyone's going to forget the rule the others in that situation it's all going to fall on the head of Magic Johnson from here and it's not an easy job but that it has to be stated plainly and clearly this is not an easy job the Lakers are horrible bad right now they have been for several years they've got a few young players who maybe could turn into something but none of them has shown like a star at this point they do have some draft picks to work with but they could lose this year's pick to Philadelphia if it's not top 3 this is not an easy job and I can't shake the feeling that the Lakers are maybe Jeanie Buss or whomever believes that because they're the Lakers It just is going to change like that that's enough being the Los Angeles Lakers and we've seen that that is not enough to be the Los Angeles Lakers you're going to have to go into this and I'm not saying Magic Johnson is incapable of it he's very bright dude but you have to realize just how many things you have to fix and get right you know this has to be to quote something that been used a lot lately but actually literally and incorrectly fine tuned machine you need this to be going from top to bottom working you have to make a lot of good decisions a lot of big decisions you have to replenish the roster you have to scout the t.v. You have to make the draft picks you have to bring in and sign smart guys in the off season cause you're not going to get the superstars up and there just are a lot of moving parts here to get the Lakers from the Right now the 19 and 39 to back to prominence. Los Angeles sports teams in general and you can lump some of the college into this to have really thrived on trying to bring that idea of yesteryear back and it's been to their detriment for a while now whether it's been bringing if you like bringing the l.a. Rams back and trying to recapture some of what they had there the jury's still out on how successful that will be but trying to bring back some of that u.s.c. For so long and their football program tried to hold on to every bit of the Pete Carroll era there to their detriment as a team for a long time right now and what this move looks like on the surface to people that may we worried about that is the Lakers trying to recapture the best of yesteryear for them with a high profile guy the difference is like you said going to be if Magic Johnson can make good on his words and say that he understands that basketball's in a markedly different place than it was the last time he was really associated with anything on the court product wise and if he's committed to letting the right people do the right job for him and as we continue to see him fill out his staff right there that's going to tell us a lot about what magic has really hasn't store going forward as he continues to say all the right things publicly will he follow that up with the actions we need to see and the point is hiring Magic Johnson is just not such an obvious win that I think people are saying it is there was an obvious move made by Major League Baseball We'll tell you what that was coming up next it's 1st last night in the dark Michael the junior year on e.s.p.n. Was that just them being left out of the decision which I ultimately think it was I think it was what rubbed them the wrong way was that they were kept in the dark on that at all it was a very clear divide in the power there while Magic Johnson said he had nothing to do with any cousins talk no I wasn't involved in that and so while I was at the Austar weekend I guess that's when they were working on it but they didn't call me and let me in on what you know they were offering and what Sacramento wanted if I'm a Lakers fan I really really hope that they're not getting cousins wasn't the impetus for this big makeshift thing because then it makes it look fly by the seat of your pants it makes it look results oriented It also makes it look like I've been saying over and over again that the Lakers are obsessed with landing a star and if they don't land a star they're a failure that's not the way they're going to get back to prominence their route to prominence is not going to be this major signing that takes place but I would imagine the seeds for this were sown a while back you know I'd imagine Max Johnson probably knew about this when he hit your dad with the pipe a week ago and the reports were that after Jeanie Buss and Phil Jackson broke up she had dinner with Magic Johnson and that's maybe where this all started you have to imagine these plans were hatched because we said almost uncharacteristically magic magic came out was very demonstrative in the fact that he wanted to be calling the shots on the basketball side of things for the Lakers now at the time he said eventually he was going on there as a as a as I believe it was a adviser was going to be his role at the time now but said eventually he wanted to call those shots eventually came soon and we know that Gina Joe Jim and Jeanie not the the greatest relationship their sibling wise and so maybe this was just the perfect storm to where you finally had that guy coming on and you knew this was the move that you were going to make right there timing let you read into certain things but you can look at that and say they made that move he's come on already and made a a move in free agency a move before the trade deadline I should say that indicates that he's not going to be obsessed with.
