We dont joke about assaulting women, we dont strategize about assauting women, rapists do these things not real men. And he says sugar coating wasnt his intent. Intention. It was necessary for kids to hear. Some parents say it wasnt the message that offended them it was the imp. Implication. I think he should of left out the part where he said president ial candidates has a stepdaughter at kennedy. He says she told him about the announcement and not only was it inappropriate timing, if he wanted to go to his family and do that, thats great, thats what all parents should be doing is informing their children about Sexual Assault. But brown says kline had his own agenda. Agenda. I do think he was picking a side. Side. Its not intended to be political, its something that the current event inspired and i would not take back my stance that Sexual Assault is wrong. Which was echoed by students on campus. Everyone should be treated equally and if theres a problem with that, theres a problem with our society. Kline says even if his announcement was misunderstood , his feelings surrounding it shouldnt be. I never think that the solution is to Say Something and be done with it but if it inspires a larger dialogue and it inspires things in the Sexual Assault from happening then i think thats a good thing. The School District did release a statement saying they agree with the sentiment regarding respect for women. But klines political opinion is his own and does not represent the district. For iowa in focus im dora miller. The next day Vice President al candidate mike pence was back in iowa playing the role that hes assumed all along smoothing over Donald Trumps rough edges. This week pence had his work cut out for him. The irony lies in the fact that if not for 2005 tape which the campaign has had to deal with for more than a week now a string of damaging wikileaks email releases would be helping trump and pence push the Clinton Campaign into a corner. She said that to be successful politically, you have to have both a public and private position, now when she was asked about that at the debate did you see how she answered, gave long lecture republicans havent been able to capitalize because theyve been digging themselves out of a hole. He laid out hillarys plans for Affordable College and how she plans on increasing Mental Health care and finding ways to fight Prescription Drug and heroin abuse. Iowas Second District candidates sat down for an open Forum Earlier in the week before a debate later in the week. The interesting part is both candidates bring their own unique experiences. The incumbent congressman Dave Loebsack used to be a policial science professor. Christopher peters is a veteran and practing surgeon in iowa city giving him a first hand look at the Affordable Care act. My overall vision is that care should be more patient centered between doctor and patient rather tahn govenrment, cms, and insurance companies. And we should allow Market Forces to work to reduce the costs of care. We havent allowed that to work for the most part. But in races like this one the incumbent has a distinct advantage theyve already done that theyre able to fall back on. Just a few weeks ago the debate about flood protection started again when cedar rapids battled the cedar river. River. But what i just did as you know, i partnered with congressman blum and i partnered with our two senators to tell the army corp of engineers to prioritize that project. How that gets prioritized remains to be seen but at least its a start. At the state level reynolds just got back from overseas where she was learning more about how iowa can be a player on the world st. Stage. She talked to other leaders about how iowa is successful with a large agbased economy and compared notes in places like argentina which also relies heavily on farming. She also learned about how one iowa business based there was struggling because of restrictive government regulations keeping them from brining in the resources they need. They lifted that restriction an recieved 33 containers of product and so theyre able to be competative and grow the market. Coming up next. To refresh your memory before our interview back in 2015 the American Public started to pay a lot closer attention to planned parenthood when the anti Abortion Group the center for medical progress released secretly recorded videos that later turned out to be heavily edited. Edited. Those videos were edited to make it seem like abortion providers were talking about how they profit from selling donated tissue from abortions. 12 state investigations determined planned parenthood did . Not act in any way that was inappropriate. That led to the House Oversight committee planned parenthood president Cecile Richards to testify about the work planned parenthood does. Does. Much of the testimony turned into attacks from Republican House members with Many Democrats in the room trying to defend richards. Women should be able to make their own decisions about their pregnancies and their futures. And the majority of americans agree. We trust women to make these decisions in consultation with their doctors, their famileis and their faith and not by that in the 21st century, women in america are routinely harrassed for accessing a legal medical procedure. In november a gunman opened fire on a planned parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs. Springs. The 57year old gunman killed two civilians and a Police Officer before being arrested. The man was rambling about the work that planned parenthood does. Soon after we sat down with local planned parenthood employees to see how it changed the way they went about their work. There was a range of emotions from our staff from sadness, grief, anger, shock, numbness, but weve seen an outpouring of support from people who do value our work and our mission so thats been really neat. The backlash on the campaign trail came right away. Bobby jindal was one of the only elected officials accross the nation let alone in the president ial race at the time against planned parenthood. As governor of louisiana he was able to end the States Department of Health Contract with planned parenthood. Just a few months before doctor rand paul worked on a bill with iowa senator joni ernst to defund planned parenthood nationally. This is ridiculous. Planned parenthoods answers were ridiculous. Planned parenthoods actions were barbaric. We see this video where they take our tax payer dollors, ripping apart their bodies and selling them acros the countrythat callous attitude and not acknowleding that that baby harvesting parts out of is horrifficwe cancelled their contract in louisiana, were working to make sure they dont get any taxpayer funding in louisiana. In dc, theyre just talking about it. Ted cruzs socially conservative stances put him at odds with planned parenthood from the start. In Johnson County with its large pockets of liberal voters cruz didnt back away from his attack on the organziation and instead focused partially on the media for what he said was bending shooter as a republican. Planned parenthood is in the business of buying and selling the bodyparts of unborn children. None of that changes the reality that planned parenthood was caught committing a pattern of felonies and they remain shocking and horiffic even after this deranged murderer committed his crime. A few weeks later we caught up with jeb bush in dubuque who was also critical of the planned parenthood debate. Somewhat related bush famously terri shiavo case in the early 2000s stepping in to reinsert a feeding tube when she had already been declared mostly brain dead and her husband elected to remove it. Bush had sided with shiavos parents who cited religious reasons to keep her alive. But in dubuque we asked him if the religiouslycharged rhetoric around the planned parenthood debate might have contributed to a gunman attacking a the Colorado Springs clinic. No i dont blame the candidates. I think people decency on this. Planned parenthood was caught selling the bodyparts of babies. If you talk about decency, thats a pretty horrible thing. It . Is . Worth remembering that multiple investigations ultimately determined that planned parenthood did nothing wrong. After the break.
