Several people came out last night to remember a 13yearold girl that was shot and killed tuesday morning. Neighbors, friends and family held a candlelight vigil at the very same spot the young girl was killed. Cbs 2 news sister and her cousin. Why did this happen . Shes too young she didnt deserve this. She brought joy to everybody. Her attitude, man, it was something else. Else. She didnt even get to graduate. She didnt really get to see anything. It hurts a lot to know that my younger sister got shot. I never get johnson was live on the scene yesterday morning right after it happened she joins us live in studio for the lates. Latest. Kelly right now three people are in custody in connection to the shooting. Shooting. Police have not released the names of the suspects nor have they released the name of the victim. Neighbors i spoke to tell me the victim was locked out of her home and was sitting with two other girls in a neighbors car trying to stay warm. Police received calls about a shooting later that morning around 7 the three suspects were in custody about 10 minutes later. A neighbor told me she learned about the shooting from her grandchildren. I come back and the girls is crying and crying. Im like what is going on grandma our friend got shot. Got shot where . Got shot on the corner over here i said oh my goodness right around the corner . Right around the corner . This dont make no sens sense. The three suspects one Police Believe there is no threat to the public. Public. Back to flood 2016 coverage weve been monitoring the river levels all week long and now were all waiting anxiously for the the cedar river to recede. Recede. It will take several days though to get to normal levels cbs 2 news anchor kevin barry barryis out again in cedar rapids. Like kevin mentioned it seems so far flood defenses are holding up well keeping the cedar river at bay. Bay. Pumps are working to clean up some water and machinery is plugging Manhole Covers in the newbo district. The city credits good planning between local and city engineers. But flood stage, city workers say they wont completely relax until the river is back to normal. People in Czech Village are breathing a sigh of relief, the area has sustained very little flood damage, making Business Owners very happy. They spent days working around the clock to not only protect the area, but evacuate the storefronts along 16th avenue that were atrisk for flooding. Right now, people in palo are just starting the cleanup process. The Southeast Side of town was evacuated before the river reached flood stage. Several homeowners reported water in their basements and a nearby cemetery also took on water. The cedar river crested in palo at just over 18feet early tuesday morning. Palo will be just one stop for Governor Terry branstad today hell be touring flood damage in the corridor all afte. Afternoon. At noon the governor will be in vinton then hell head to palo and finally will tour damage in cedar rapids by late afternoon. The governor was just in cedar rapids last week looking at on tuesday he issued a disaster proclamation for four new counties including jones. Courthouse. Ll for longtime residents of cedar rapids, this is a familiar sight. Remisicent to the flooding we saw in 2008, these waters are pushing through the downtown most historic buildings. But as my mama always tells me, if you dont like something, send it back. Looks like the city is taking her advice. Pumps lining the cedar river are sending excess water from the basements of downtown buildings, like the courhtouse and city hall, back into the river. This is just one of the many measures city and county officials put in place to prepare for the potential disaster. We put hesco barriers around this building. We put em around our correctional center, four feet additional on top of the island height, feet. We have 4,000 tons of sand it took to fill the hesco barriers, so that equates to about 250 truckloads. The courthouse was ready for a crest of nearly 30 feet, eight feet above the cedar rivers peak height. We were preparing for the worst case scenario. Now the river crest was lower than that, but thats fine. Were always better to be overprepared than underprepare d, so weve protected the infrastructure for the public. Ll all in all, it appears the major flooding relatively unscathed. Up next for the city is recovery, which for most will be much easier than eight years ago. And im Justin Robers lets get a check of our cbs 2 by all accounts, city leaders in cedar rapids are close to claiming a major victory in fighting back the second biggest flood in the citys history. History. But not everyone is in the mood to celebrate. Drone flew over the newbo district yesterday where hesco barriers were installed to hold back the water. As you can see, some buildings were left high and dry. Thats because the city says the barriers would not have worked in any other location. One business that was left out of that protected zone is tornados. The owner tom slaughter is there right now and has set up his own barricade. He says hes not moving from the area until the water recedes. Slaughter says the city left him on the city says the big hesco barriers wouldnt have been effective in the area around tornados. Slaughter used plywood and sandbags hoping the water doesnt destroy his livelihood. Were pretty shocked, my wife, me, my sons. You know like i told you were family. This is family. We all work here, all of us. We dont hire it out, we work here. This is what we do, sixteen years weve been doing it. Long journey to recovery, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. Once things dry out, there will be a party at tornados to support the owners of tornados. Cbs 2 news anchor kevin barry first showed us footage of flood waters around those businesses yesterday. Yesterday. And this morning hes back walking alongside the cedar river. River. Kevin where are you know and how does it look this morni. The cedar river will remain above flood stage for multiple days and thats forced the Cedar Rapids School district to close classrooms for the rest of the week. Week. All Cedar Rapids Public Schools will remain closed thats due to ongoing road closures and evacuation areas. Reopen tomorrow. And because the flood forced School Officials to call off an entire, week, they are adding a school day to next weeks schedule. Students were supposed to have monday, october third off. Now, that will be their first day back in class. City and county Officials Say they learned a lot from the flood of 08 and thats partly the reason the situation now is much improved. County supervisor james houser says the courthouse was overprepared this time around. Around. Overprepar ed rather than underprepared dthe county supervisors are already discussing a timeline for reopening the linn county courthouse. In 2008 the courts operated at kirkwood for several months before the Downtown Location could be reopened. And with the exception of the 380 bridge, all the downtown water never topped them, but did come close to the deck along first, second and third avenues. The bridges will remain closed until the water level drops and the city determines that they are safe. Still, many residents are already wondering when the downtown bridges will reopen and when evacuees can return to their homes. Cbs 2 news caught up with cedar rapids city manager Jeff Pomerantz who seemed optimistic. Optimistic. The problem is really now what you see above underground and the pressure thats building. But we think thats going to subside. And as the levels go down. Which they are very very slowly. Were going to have the opportunity to get Cedar Rapidians back into their homes very soon. Were thinking by the weekend. Ever ything should be cleared up. And well be able to have business and life as usual in cedar rapids. Scammers are acting fast to target flood victims. Midamerican energy is warning floodaffected homeowners to there is no charge to reconnect customers affected by the flood. Cedar Rapids Police tell cbs 2 news con artists have told evacuees to leave their doors unlocked you should always lock your home if you leave it. Scammers are also offering victims Free Hotel Rooms in exchange for credit card information. If you get one of these calls, contact police. People are not the only ones who were forced out of their homes to prepare for flooding. Flooding. The Cedar Valley Humane Society says right now with pets. Shelter staff say they have taken in more than 70 dogs, cats, birds and reptiles. About half of those pets are in the shelter and the other half are in foster homes. As you can imagine, that many animals means they need a lot of supplies. 01 39 22 seeing the Community Response during a flood situation or really any disaster situation is just. It warms your heart, definitely, you know. It shows people care. Its just been really great and were just incredibly thankful for the sup. Support.
