A fire has shut down a popular cedar rapids restuarant and damaged a local bar thats just next door. Door. Right now fire officials are trying to figure out what caused flames to destroy the roof at rileys caf. Cafe. The Fire Department sent every truck and firefighter they had to battle the fire in 90degree heat. It happened right ater 330 and closed the busy road during the afternoon commute. Rileys was closed a manager at moose mcduffys was there while firefighters were working on the buildings and talked to both owners. Now, some city leaders say it is time to move on. On. At least three members of the council told the gazette options. The city purchased a large plot of land along first avenue on the west side of the river after the flood of 2008. It is one of hundreds of City Owned Properties a group is looking at for redevelopments options. Thats when supervisors are scheduled to vote on a second reading of the ordinance. That meeting was supposed to be yesterday morning but the board delayed the vote by 24 hours to add more legal language to the proposal. Proposal. If approved after a third reading, the minimum wage in linn county would rise by one dollar an hour on january firstand rise again the following two years, settling at 1025 an hour. Like a similar increase in johnson out of the ordinance. This morning linn county supervisors will also hear how some communities are looking to rethink Public Transit. Transit. The metropolitan Planning Organization says that the cedar rapids publc Transit System may work better under the control of a Regional Transit authority. The mpo says that would spread out the costs between communities and provide better service. Right now public bus routes in marion and hiawatha are operated by cedar rapids by contract. Andres gomez mpo manager revenues being generated and distributed over to the city of cedar rapids is not enough to compare to the services that are being provided for those communities. 12 12lifts the para Transit Service operated by linn county could also be included as part of the Regional Transit proposal. It would take years to get the system off the ground. One candidate for the linn county board of supervisors wants leaders to cut their own. Salaries. Randy ray is his district four seat. Ray told cbs 2 news the board should cut salaries to 70 thousand dollars a year. He says it would save the county 33thousand dollars a year for each supervisor. And ray says it would be easier to justify keeping the board at five members. I worry a lot about the loss of the rural area if we were to go to three supervisors. This is problem solving for both. It cuts their salaries, which most people are concerned about and it gives the representatio are worried about. About. Ray says he would propose the extra money that is saved on salaries, if his plan becomes reality, should go towards improving rural roads while the population of linn county grows. A cedar rapids woman has pleaded guilty to stealing another pe take money from the government. 39yearold Kaeisha Robinson filed tax returns in both her name and others without them knowing. Cold case has confessed to abducting and killing 11yearold Jacob Wetterling in minnesota. Minnesota. Wetterling was riding his bike with his brother and a friend on an october night in 1989 when a masked man grabbed him. That man, police thought, was danny heinrich. Fbi officers interviewed him back then but never had enough evidence to charge him. Heinrich has since admitted to abducting the boy nearly 27years ago. Approved by jacobs family henrich will not be charged with the boys murder. But he instead is facing decades of years behind bars in a separate child pornography case. Over the weekend, heinrich led officials to Jacob Wetterlings remains ending years of speculation. The Cedar Rapids CommunitySchool District has officially wrapped up its investigation into an inappropriate relationship between a substitute teacher and a Washington High School st. Student. The district says some details in the investigation have to be kept confidential but also said the intial probe in february was not effective. In fact it was not reported to the district at the time it was happening. The district also says Mary Beth Haglin shouldve been remo the substitute teacher list during the investigation. Investigation. Former washington high principal doctor Ralph Plagman and administrator Michael Johnson resigned from their posts this past summer.
