Right now police are still conducting interviews and are not releasing any possible leads into the investigation. But police say the shooting that happened in the complex behind me was not a random act. Act. On tuesday night 25 year old Joseph Perkins was killed at the cedar valley townhouses perkins actually lived in chicago. The other person shot on tuesday was hit in the leg but did survive. Police have not released his name. There has been an increase in violence. Cedar Rapids Police chief wayne jerman says the solution to this problems, needs to come from the enitre community. Gun violence is a symptom of other issues that are creating it and so the Police Department needs to work with the rest of the community to address this problem. Problem. Police chief jerman also says the increase in violence is very concerning to him. Listen to this, reports of shots fired here in cedar rapids have gone up by four from this time last year. Police Community Action team, or pcat force. The team has been out on city streets for about a month now. The program launched last year in an effort to target highviolence areas of the city to provide support. Mayor corbett says areas of success include the expansion of the citys med quarter and Arts District along third street. Corbett continues to ask residents to get involved. If you make the call to get involved, people will cheer for you. Why . Because you made the right call and if you do, it will help make the state of our city even stronger. Stronger. The city is also waiting for federal funding to come through for flood protection after it was approved last year. Because of the delay in funding, the project is moving lower on the citys priority list. Hillary clinton is boasting a big endorsement this morning morningahead of this weekends primary vote in south carolina. Carolina. Senate minority leader harry reid is now rival Bernie Sanders last saturday in reids homestate of nevada and holds a large lead heading into saturdays primary vote. Texas senator ted cruz also got a pretty important endorsement in his home state while republicans look forward to super tuesday next week. Week. Texas Governor Greg Abbott gave cruz his backing on wednesday. Abbott joined cruz at a Campaign Rally in houston. Texas is one of about a dozen states that will choose their candidate on tuesday. Texas is a very important state in the president ial process with more than 150 delegates. On super tuesday nearly 600 will be up for grabs. On the republican side candidates need more than 12 hundred delegates overall to win the nomination. Nomination. After the nevada caucuses donald trump leads the pack with 81. Ted cruz and marco rubio both have 17. Tonight the remaining five candidates will be on the debate stage again. Again. One officer was killed, one has lifethreatening injuries and the other is expected to recover. An arrest has now been made in a double homicide that happened last year in des moines. Barney fraaken was charged last night with two counts of first degree murder. Murder. Back on november 22nd Des Moines Police and firefighters found the bodies of fraakens wife and 16year old daughter. Investigators say they were shot to death. Fraaken was also found at the scene with a selfinflicted gunshot wound and had been in the hospital until his arrest last night. Night. Sorenson accepted a plea deal to reduce his Domestic Abuse charges and to avoid trial. Sorenson stepped down from the state senate shortly before pleading guilty to federal charges over his decision to switch support during the 2012 iowa caucuses.
