The couple left behind three pipe bombs tied together and connected to a Remote Control car. Police believe it malfunctioned. There was no explosion. Witnesses who worked with farook told police he attended the party but left early. Wont call this a terrorist attack yet, but it is leading the investigation because the case has some hallmarks of terrorism. Officials stress they still dont know the motive. Officials tell cbs news syed farook was not onny u. S. Watch list, but two Law Enforcement sources say they h he found evevence farook had contact with overseas with suspected ties to terrorism. Investigators are focusing on the extent of those contacts and whether farook may have been radicalized. Law enforcement sources tell cbs news what they do know so f r rarook, a u. S. All this is now being looked at by the f. B. I. , which seized computers, humb divers and other Electronic Devices and shipped them to whington for analysis. Now farooks wife did pass counterterrorism screening as part of her visa application process, but until Law Enforcement determines the true motive in this attacm, whether its terrorism or workplace violence, its not clear if warning signs were actually missed. Pelley jan, thank you. Farooks wife came into the United States on a visa specifically for fiancees. Norah odonnene, cohost of cbs this morning, spoke to the lead investigators in San Bernardino. Norah . Reporter scott, she was the most unlikely accomplice, a 27yearold mother with an infant at home, and now involved in one of the deadliest mass shootings. Reporter i cant get my head around the fact that a 27yearold mother of a sixmonthold is firing off as many rounds like she is. I think the entire event doesnt make a whole lot of sense to be honest with you, and its kind of hard to wrap your anything like this regardless of who they are. Reporter authorities know little about Tashfeen Malik. She was not an american citizen t was here on a k1 visa according to f. B. I. Special agent david bowdich. She was here on a pakistani passport. Reporter shes here on pakistani passport . Yes. Reporter isnt it highly unusual to have a mother of a sixyearold engagag in a shootout . I would think its unusual. Pelley what does that add up to . Whal it adds up to to me is this was a guy who was probably qaeda, a guy, given the amount of weapons and explosives that he had, that he was planning someththg significant. Pelley omething bigger than what we actually saw . Perhaps. Perhaps. He obviously didnt take all of what he had. So either it was going to be a series of events or he was planning something bigger and this took its place becausese of the office anger that he had. Pelley a dozen pipe bombs left behind in his home. Exactly. Pelley does it matter anymore whether these things are inspired by extremists or directed by extremists. Scott, i think its matters a lot. When its just inspired youre usually talking about one or t t people and the number of casualties is limited. Its a relatively small number. When its directed, you have the potential for much more. When its directive you have the potential for multiple operatives, simultanenes attacks,s,illing much, much larger number of people, like paris. Pelley just like paris. Two at the c. I. A.
