Waterloo home caught fire early this morning. Morning. Fire chief pat troar tells cbs 2 news firefighters responed to the scene at 717 linden avenue around 415. They found the body of 64 yearold rebecca lavenz in the ding area of the home. Thats where investigators lieve the fireretarted. Firefighters say it was only a minor fire, but there was heavy smoke. An autopsy is happening to determine how lavenz died, but investigators dont think foul play was involved. Cedar Rapids Police have arrested a man for arson. Arson. Richard alatalo was s arreed monday afternoon after witnesses say they saw him breaking into a vacant home on j street uthwest. When police arrived, alatalo ft the house and was arrested. Inside the house, investigators found a small fire in a bedroom. Alatalo is also charged with third degree burglary. Kestner apparent removed screws from his shower and escapethrough the pipe. Auorities believe he tested his escapeseveral times befofo actually breaking out. Kestnewasnt on the run for very long. He was found hours later near i80 bruised and scraped from his previous escape attempts. An investigation found several mistakes in procedurthat have now been corrected. An officic was justififd when they used lethal force earlier this year according to the Des Moines Police chief. Chief dana wingert says officer Vanessa Miller acted reasonably when she fatally shot ryan llinger back in june. Milr was helping when he opened fire on bolinger who was acting erratically and approaching millers car. A grand jury cleared miller of any wrong doing in august.
