From the youngest kids in the audience today, to the oldest veteran here 94 years old everybody had a reason to be here, to honor these people on this veterans day. One speaker told the room, for nearly 380 years, americans have stepped forward toward the sound of battle and have protected us from harm, and given us the opportunity for a better life. Another speaker asked veterans to stand up according to the wars theyd served in and 94yearold donald marx was recognized for serving before and during world war two. From the oldest there, to some of the youngest, we were blown away by jackson van lancker, who was there to watch his grandpa win veteran of the year award for his work helping stock food pantries for veterans. Jackson says, his grandpa still a hero today inspires the next generation, like him. Freedom. Cbs 2 News Reporter Mellaney Moore explains how theyre getting ready. Ready. This veterans day. Captain shaela bresnan of the army reserve is preparing to leave immediate family. And an extended family of 300 art students. Cpt. Shaela bresnan, 649th Regional Support group 3 55 48 its really a privilege to be able to deploy. We spend up to five years training for the opportunity to go over and do the jobs weve been trained for. Its the second time shes going to afghanistan and the objective is the same. To lead base life support. 3 56 23 our job is to make sure that every soldier has a bed to sleep in, has a hot meal and has a safe environment that they can come home to when theyre finished with their mission. About 40 soldiers are training to be deployed in a few days. Some for the first time. 04 03 22 this is something ive always wanted to do i feel like this is how i get to serve. As a veteran. By going on this deploymentsoldiers say part of being in the army reserve is understanding that you can be called for duty at any time. 04 04 55 as a soldier, i havent been through it yet, but i can say personally that its going to be a very emotional time. My family is going to be there. Bresnan says for her. Veterans day isnt just about recognizing service men and women. But also those who make them able to do their jobs. 4 00 16 the backbone of the military is their Service Members. The support of the Service Members comes from their family and their families are able to support them because of the communities that they live in. The soldiers in this unit are expected to be gone for about a year. Controversy over the way racist incidents were handled at the university of missouri has drawn national attention. Attention. Now, students at the university of iowa have protestors. Earlier today, about 50 students and alumni wore all black to support those who feel attacked because of their race, specifically african americans. Many of the people who attended the blackout say mizzou isnt alone it only takes one incident for ui to be in the same situation. As most predominantely white institutions like iowa is and mizzou is then youll have the same things kind of happening and so almost as a message to our campus, that were fighting for equality and freedom and to be able to sit in our classrooms and not be ostracized and marginalized.
