District leaders tell fox 28 news a Police Officer was involved in what theyre calling a discipline incident with a student. But the mother of that student has a different take. Take. Mother Lakeisha Hayes says she immediately panicked after a phone call from a Police Officer at her daughters school. He was like yeah she wouldnt move out of her seat so i grabbed her and had to force her into the office. That prompted her to drop everything and check on her daughter. When she comes her hair and tears crying so im like taliya what happened to you . Her daughter taliya says she was attacked after a misunderstanding over lunchtime seating in the cafeteria of the johnson steam academy. I wouldnt move so he picked me up by my ponytail and he pushed me against the wall and he was talking and cursing at me. Lakeisha says she filed a complaint on the officer at the Cedar Rapids Police station and took her daughter to the hospital. Im hurt im disgusted everything inside of me idk what to do. Fox 28 news spoke with the department and school they would only confirm there was a discipline incident and that hayes filed a complaint without providing further details. What do you hope this officer knows . That i was scared. Lakeisha says the officer eventually approached them outside of School Grounds saying his actions were out of line. Hes like yes can i please apologize to her for cussing at her as well . And i want to apologize to you for being so rude and nasty which i can forgive but i cant forget. Do you forgive him . No. Lakeisha says now shes waiting for answers about what happened at the heat of the moment. Both wish discipline was handled differently. The survey that polled students about their knowledge on Sexual Misconduct was released just weeks agoa although this incident was solved quickly, it still experience. As a first year student, Sexual Assaults arent something you expect to hear about on your campus. This one in particular, thats the route that i walk home from work because i work at the sheraton and so that was rather nerveracking for me. On tuesday, it was on the mind of many students who woke up to the alert of three incidents. I have many friends who have experienced Sexual Assault and i particularly have a very close friend of mine who was assaulted several years back and the trauma is still very harsh for her. Ive experienced assault in my past, and a lot of female friends that i know have, and males too, because its not an exclusively female issue. While Sexual Assaults often go unreported, this incident took a different turn. The suspect was taken into custody within 24 hours. Im just glad that they have a system to notify students and theyre very good at that, sending emails. Overall im pleased with how most people on the campus, because it is a more liberal campus and people talk about it more, its an issue that the University Takes seriously. Im very appreciative though of the people who stepped up and reported the incident and the bystanders who took the opportunity to intervene and help. Students and faculty say they are grateful for the universitys Sexual Misconduct training and quick action, but theres still work to be done. I think just being careful about the way we talk about Sexual Assault, because during the actual training that we have there are some funny parts of it to lighten it up, but its not a light issue. The biggest thing, though, is we need to look out for each other and when we see something happening, we need to do something about it. The suspects name, and his charges, will not be released yet. Theyre asking residents to boil their water or use bottled water until further notice. Workers now must repair the break and confirm the water supply is safe. They hope to wrap up that work sometime tomorrow. With Colder Weather on the way, theres extra concern for the homeless. Local agencies came together to come up with a winter sheltering plan for emergency overflow beds for shelters. 14agencies have been working together for the past three months to coordinate the plans. Everyone has something to offer even if they cant provide overflow theyve got great ideas and other resources. Resources. Those at todays meeting do, however, say anyone who is intoxicated or high on drugs is not allowed in any shelter anytime a year. My First Experience with drugs and alcohol. I was about 13 years old. First time i had any drug of any kind was alcohol, 12 years old. Those young kids were from opposite sides of the state. It just progressed. , i grew up in a family where i felt unloved and all that stuff and i was just searching for something. I didnt fit in. I didnt feel right. Now theyre adults in the same program. Recovering from heroin addiction. I started out smoking it and snorting it for the First Six Months and then i started using the needle and i just lost all control. Local experts say heroin deaths are increasing across the country and here in eastern iowa. The concerning trend is prompting the conversation between law enforcement, the court system, Health System and treatment programs. If we begin to talk about what are the needs, how do we begin to make some modifications in assisting with detox, so that they have a fighting chance at getting clean and and learning the tools to do that longterm, i think its amazing. She wants to finish college and work with children. Im so passionate about kids and any way that i can help them. He will graduate from treatment have his own children. Back. They said if you dont get clean youll never see your children and i dont know what it was, but it made me think of me as a child. Oh my god, my children are going to have to grow up like me . The attack on pearl harbor and the beginning of world war 2. The korean war in the 50sand the controversial war that divided a nation. The vietnam war. All of the men and women who served in these conflicts as well as those who continue to serve are rememberd. Some of whom, didnt get a thank you when they came home. A movement six years in the making continues to thank these veterans in one of the most honorable ways possible. Of course were talking about the eastern iowa honor flight. The American Legion i have many ww2 veterans, korean war veterans, Vietnam Veterans that i know personally. And a lot of these folks have been through a lot of stuff. And they very rarely talk about it unless theyre with another group of veterans. I wasnt really in combat. I want to let ya know that. I drank a lot of coffee. I was on an Aircraft Carrier and we were looking for submarines so i was never shot and a clean sheet every night. But i was overseas when the vietnam war started. George you werent able to go and serve but here you are, knocking on doors, youre beating the drum to keep this program growing in more than six years. Absolutely. Its become almost my reason for being. Because when i walk up to a veteran at the marine corps memorial, shake his hand, thank him for his service, and hes crying and he says the first people that thanked me for what i did since i came home in 1946. This takes a lot of money to be able to take people who are very deserving of this, but its not a cheap fee to be able to take this trip. Each trip is approximately 80,000 and typically what we ask the guardians to pay is their fairshare covers 1 3 of that cost. Then 2 3 of that cost are covered by individual donations. Youd be amazed at the number of 50 or 100 donations that come in and builds rather rapidly. Once we have the money for the flight, well schedule it. Our veterans are some of the most selfless individuals that ive ever met. They dont ask for anything. We will get a thank you note from a veteran, hell have a 100 check in there. Says i want another veteran to experience what ive experienced. A lot of the veterans feel its one of the best days of their life. Theyve been recognized. Its really heartwarming for us. A way to say thank you to a soldier who has certainly earned the honor of being called a hero. A oneday trip that leaves a lifetime impressionif you have problems walking, dont let that bother you. Well take care of you. We have medical staff onboard, we will take care of your needs. We want to see you on the flight. I had a good friend who was a ww2 veteran, a korean war veteran, and a vietnam veteran. His infant daughter is buried in arlington and i had a contact in dc find the grave. He hasnt seen his daughters grave for 2030 years. We took him to that grave. Thats the kind of stuff that really makes an impact. Another memory that i will always keep is at the ww2 memorial, youll see a veteran walking around, and hell come to a battle or a theatre that he served with. And he just stops. Wearing flipflops, Karla Hoffman traveled 59 blocks in honor of her husband rick who died from the disease at age 59. Sometimes conversaon can do more than money. Money. Carcinoid cancer is very rare and oftens get mis diagnosed with other illnesses. And that significantly smaller number also changes the dynamics on capitol hill. In the 1970s, more than 70 percent of members in both chambers of congress served in the military. Nowa each chamber has less than 20 percent. It doesnt stop with congress only 3 veterans entered the 20 16 president ial race. Democrat jim webb and republican, rick perry. And both of those campaigns are currently on holda and republican Lindsey Graham is was excluded from the fourth gop debate. Which means for this president ial election , there could be no veteran at the top of a major party ticket. The last veteran to top a president ial ticket . John mccain in 2008a i think its very helpful to have had that experience and backround, its not absolutely necessary.
