Cutie meteorologist Phil speed back. To the. Marcos visions and her little worlds. Who for the latest cutting edge developments in science science fantastic Professor each year old cock. This is science fantastic with Professor Meteo Kaku and science fantastic we profile the amazing job dropping scientific discoveries that are changing the way we view the world and in this hour we're going to throw the lines open because this is your hour this is a time when you can get to the telephone and call 866-323-2538 maybe something's been bothering you about science all these years and you don't have anyone to talk to maybe your kids ask a question that totally stumped you about science maybe you're just talking to your coworkers or something pops up and people are left speechless with no one to talk to well here's a chance to talk to me and you can share your thoughts and ideas on 130 radio stations that carry science fantastic and also the Sirius x.m. Satellite and once again that number is 247 and some of you may be saying to yourself well I have a simple stupid question and I don't want to embarrass myself on national radio but you know sometimes the simplest questions are the deepest most profound and the most educational when you take them apart after all Einstein asked a simple question What is light and change the 20th century when he came up with the answer and so. Once again you can always hear your thoughts any question about science is Ok on science fantastic Ok so let's take the 1st listener phone call please. Carrie Kahn from Richmond Virginia uncover you Ellen he 99 am. And I have a question if the female of the bee is generally a room to. The back of the male How do you explain that in the human the the. Female who will. Elect a male. Well May. American female raving at the marrow a. Ring on her Well this is a question of national importance because look at the rate of illegitimate births that are growing in the industrialized world not to mention the fact that it's a scientific question science seems to indicate that if evolution is about survival of the fittest then why do women obviously choose men that are not fit that love him and leave them at leaving the poor woman to be dues to poverty to have to raise the kid all by themselves and take a look at the soaring crime rate this is a statistical observation that criminals in general do not make an absolute rule of course but in general there is a demographic factor involved with criminality and that is fatherless unsocialized male if you are male chances are you have a greater chance of becoming a criminal Also if you are an socialized and also if you are fatherless that is you have no role model now that said of course is always exceptions to the rule we're talking about a demographic observation so therefore why do women choose men who are going to leave them and obviously reduce them to poverty as a consequence and perhaps doom their children to criminality Well you see Darwin's theory of evolution is more than simply saying you want to have the man with the biggest muscles you also want to have the man that has the best genes in other words you want to have a man 1st of all who's going to take care of your kid who's going to be a good father a good provider Ok makes good money but also Ok is a little bit dashing also has a great personality very very seductive in his approach to to women women like that because those genes are also quote good in fact but of course that's not the total package. So in other words some men may have the genes for being a good father but they're rather boring and they're not so strong and they're not so dashing other men may be quite dashing and charming and soothing to the senses but horrible when it comes to long term commitment and so those are 2 kinds of characteristics that women can choose from and sometimes they they make the wrong choice sometimes they say I love this guy because he is so interesting dashing and can make me feel so alive but is horrible when it comes to propagating the genes into the next generation and so sometimes women make the wrong choice but according to Darwin's theory of evolution there is something to be said for dashing genes of a playboy they are also good in the sense that they increase the survival characteristics of the child the problem is that they're not going to be good fathers so in a choice between Dad vs the cad It's unfortunate but some women are genetically predisposed to choose the cad rather than the dad Ok Moving right along let's take the next listener phone call my name is Rick I'm calling from West Virginia not listening to you and 1400 a. Am My question is adaptation a necessary component of evolution Well evolution simply says that animal species evolve with time and in each generation they are more adapted to the environment and therefore adaptation is a very integral part to evolution but then the question is What about chance what about dumb luck or what about all sorts of strange things that can happen that would perhaps allow your genes to propagate into the next generation and yes evolution has to take that into account evolution basically says that species change with time over millions of years that change could be quite dramatic Ok that goes against other theories that say that organisms are constant that they don't change at all now we know the by. Chica mechanism by which this takes place d.n.a. Is the carrier of our information and the genes of our children are slightly different from the genes of the parents and over many many generations these changes build up and we can even use them as a clock we can actually calculate over how many millions of years what percent of our genes change because they adapt to the environment take a look at the chimpanzee for example chimpanzees our closest evolutionary neighbor we are 98.5 percent genetically identical to the chimpanzee and we know that after one percent of our genes mutate 4000000 years have passed Therefore if you do the math if we are 98.5 percent genetically equivalent to a chimpanzee It means that we separated from them about 6000000 years ago and bingo that also corresponds to the fossil evidence as well and so in other words yes genes adapt to a changing environment and the rate of adaptation is about one percent per 4000000 years and from that you can calculate when we separated from get this farm animals we can actually calculate when we separated from dogs cats sheep and pigs that you find on a typical farm Now this comes from genetic analysis we know the rate at which genes mutate and adapt to a changing environment we know the rate at which d.n.a. Progresses therefore by simply knowing how much we differ from a sheep we can literally calculate when we shared a common ancestor Ok Moving right along let's take the next listener phone call oh yes this is Bill in Palm Coast Florida listening to the will you be the tone of beach and my question is. Since we know by the Miller experiment back in 1950 that. Amino acids were most likely created by some natural energy source in the prebiotic soup when the earth was forming. Do we have any idea as to why some of it was a meeting I mean no one else had started to replicate themselves in other words how can something living sprout from something that was not living point what had to occur for that to happen Well Bill us one of the most important questions in all of biology and that is what was the spark that separated non-living material from a living material and you correctly isolate the experiment of Stanley Miller Sally Miller was a graduate student just a graduate student back in the 1950 s. And he took a flask of water this is something that you can do in your kitchen by the way and he put into it things like ammonia cleaning fluid and methane and Pox sick but cereals that he thought replicated the early atmosphere of the earth billions of years ago and then he put a tiny spark a little spark inside this flask of water and ammonia and then he kept it and then he walked away that's all he did that this is one of the simplest experiments of all time but perhaps one of the most profound in his philosophical theological implications after coming back and doing nothing he opened the flask and what did he find inside the flask bingo he found amino acids these are the precursors of proteins that is the building blocks of proteins are for free simply by doing nothing simply by adding energy to the carbon based things like ammonia and methane he could create hydrocarbons because carbon has 4 of bonds and they rearrange themselves to form chains and these chains are called amino acids you put together lots of you know asses and you get proteins the building blocks of life and then you ask an even more interesting question what would have happened if Stanley Miller simply left this flask alone for a few 1000000 years. Perhaps perhaps the molecules will become so sophisticated Lee complex after a few 1000000 years that they will learn how to replicate themselves that is the key aspect of d.n.a. Self replication from one d.n.a. Molecule you get to from 2 d. In molecules you get 4 from 4 you get 816326428 died you get the picture from one molecule from one molecule apparently all life on Earth Sprong Now if you think about it we can eat almost all life forms on the planet Earth we can eat sea urchins we can eat octave Pods and yet we're separated from them by millions of years of evolution but we can eat them meaning that their proteins their d.n.a. Which creates these proteins are the same as the d.n.a. In our own body except the genes are rearranged differently so what was the separation between living and non-living the answer is self replication making a Xerox copy of yourself that's what d.n.a. Can do it's different from other molecules in the universe in the sense that it can create a copy of itself and that was the spark the spark that then created Life As We Know It All life on Earth without exception is nothing but d.n.a. Rearranged to slightly differently but still the same molecule now exactly how did it take place nobody knows no one can do this experiment and wait a few 1000000 years to get a Ph d. But we do know that if you have molecules complex enough you have enough to create a self replicating molecule called d.n.a. Ok well let's take a short commercial break and after the break we're going to continue with open mike on science fantastic once again give us a call and share your thoughts have a question you answered cold 800 more for not. 955 is the number to call during the week to get your question to Professor Kaku That's 804-4950. 4 more information on this and other great talker Abrams' Talk Radio Network dot com Robert. It's clear that you know your whole theory and together well you ask interesting question because all science textbooks have to be rewritten because they got it wrong we used to think that everything is made out of matter and matter itself is of course made out of Adam's and inside the atom we have electrons and protons and things like that so that's what every textbook says however it we know realized in the last 10 years or so that every textbook has to be rewritten it turns out that atoms represent only a small fraction of everything there is in the universe in fact 4 percent of the universe is made out of ordinary matter that is atoms then we have 23 percent of the universe made out of dark matter I think that's what you refer to and then 73 percent by far the largest made out of dark energy which is even more strange Now if you could figure out what dark matter and dark energy are then you will win the Nobel Prize in Physics and you'll be heralded as the next Einstein because ordinary matter which of course has generated lots of Nobel prizes all the consists of 4 percent of the universe so dark matter is very strange if I had dark matter in my head it be invisible that's all because dark dark energy is also invisible but dark matter has a weight if you put it on your head and you'd feel it but then it would go right through your fingers and go right to the center of the earth go all the way to China reverse direction in China come right back the center of the earth and meet you again right there in your living room and dark matter with an oscillating back and forth from your living room to China and back strange but we think dark matter exists in fact we have the Hubble space telescope that's giving us diagrams and pictures of dark matter as it spreads throughout the Gallic. See because even though it's invisible we can detect it's presence for example how do I know that you wear glasses Well you have a glass frame and light is distorted as it goes through glass that's why you know there's glass there that's why we have lenses and that's why you know this somebody is wearing glasses same thing with dark matter dark matter is invisible and yet it bends light that's how we do it we look at light bending as it goes there are galaxies and then we use computers to reassemble what is bending the light and just like we know glasses there we also know that dark matter is there as well but sadly speaking we don't know what dark matter really is now the leading theory is however dark matter is nothing but the next octave of a vibrating string we are made out of strings we think even electrons and protons if you had a supermarket scope would be revealed as nothing but vibrations of a band but this rubber band has higher octaves higher vibrations and we think that's what dark matter is and so to prove it we have the Large Hadron Collider outside Geneva Switzerland and with that machine we want to create a being of dark matter that would be significant that would be the 1st time in world history that a new form of matter was artificially created right here on the planet Earth and so we hope to do that we've been there we've done that we've got the Higgs bows and next on the agenda is dark matter we want to produce dark matter in the laboratory and we think but cannot prove that it's nothing but our next octave the next higher vibration of a tiny vibrating string and by the way string theory is what I do for a living that's my day job and in fact I'm the co-creator of one of the main branches of string theory called string feel very moving right along let's take the next listener phone call. My name is Bill Gruber I'm in Los Angeles California My question is equal to the squared. Parked car. Arms frequently even Can't you actually get the merit of a photon. Because if you quit equal parts sometimes frequency and therefore merit the mass of photon would equal parts of the divided by the square of the speed of light which would imply a very narrow which is what you'd expect but directly proportional to the frequency the question well built us a question that actually a lot of people ask themselves when they 1st learned this I asked myself exactly that same question when I was in high school and found out that a lot of other people were also asking that very same question 1st though everyone knows each was mc squared am is for example the mass of hydrogen and it could explosive Lee releases energy to form he which is the energy of the sun that's why the sun shines that's why the universe lights up because of egos empty square but then we have plants equations which says that energy for force not a frequency you see now here's the problem equals mc squared only applies for matter matter that you can touch and feel energy proportional to frequency only applies for light and the question is can you use both equally Asians to categorize light and the answer is no because if you equate these 2 equations together it seems that you get matter being a function of frequency and Light has no rest mass Ok it has an apparent mass given by that equation so that equation gives you a rough estimate of what the mass would look like if light has mass but light has no rest mass you cannot stop a light beam and so the simply quavering of an equation for matter with an equation for light does not work when it comes to ordinary light beams However if you want to know more about this you can get a copy of my graduate level textbooks I wrote a book called quantum field theory which gives you perhaps the latest developments on that very same equation but the. You know when it's my. Wife. I 1st and. Really all 'd over it would only. Oh. Oh dear. And also why did you and only so one always. Mark you ask him interesting questions 1st of all we have Newton's laws of gravity and they work precisely well within the solar system in fact we can shoot a space probe right through the rings of Saturn that's how accurate the laws of gravity are and those laws are so precise that we can calculate the mass of the moon and the density of the moon but we also know the size of the moon by telescopes and so we can calculate whether the moon is hollow or not and the answer is No The moon is not hollow because we can calculate the mass the density and the size and those 3 numbers allow you to show that the moon has no pockets of emptiness inside also Newton's Laws of Motion say that if there was such a pocket then gravity would crush it and it would simply cave in 2nd of all then the question is what is the moon made of well we know what the wood is made of because we have pieces of moon rock given back from our astronauts and lo and behold we found that moon rock is very similar to Earth rock you see meteors and asteroids are quite different the carbon content is quite different nickel iron content quite different from the earth and the moon the earth of the moon are almost twins almost twins when it comes to chemical composition so we believe that the moon was blown out of the earth about 4100000000 years ago and then the question is why does only one side of the moon face us you've never seen the other side of the moon think of the moon right now think of all Devil Moon and you realize that well it's the same movement it's always the same moon you can see a man in the moon. A rabbit in the moon but it's the same moon you've never seen The Dark Side Of The Moon unless you look at pictures from the Russian space program in the American space program in fact the other side of the moon is quite different there's a bull's eye one gigantic bull's eye on the other side of the moon and why is that because the gravity in title for us is it turns out that the moon is not quite round looks round but it's actually slightly football shaped and if you use Newton's laws of motion and calculate a stable orbit What is the stable orbit of a football as it goes around the earth the stable orbit is when one side of the football always faces the Earth and so the football does go around the earth or one side of the football is always pointing toward the center of the earth and that's why we only see one side of the moon because of tidal forces created by gravity because the moon is not exactly round that's why Mercury is also approximately synchronize to the sun the sun's gravity is also strong enough to create title forces on Mercury as America is almost aligned to the sun but of course it takes millions to billions of years but our moon is in fact synchronized to us and therefore one day on the moon is 30 Earth days Ok Moving right along now let's take the next listener funk off. Troll example. Of. One of the 2.3 mile course of if you have super. They were formed and to look for work if you're. A ring. Around the overture pushed against these are the North and so full well that turn the orbiter or turn the ring. Or have a port who produced it. We have them of course but surely you ask an interesting question that actually goes back thousands of years and this question involves perpetual motion machines you see even back in antiquity thousands of years ago Kings needed energy energy to create the goods in the fields and factories and energy to arm soldiers and defeat enemies and so many people would come to the king stating that they have created a perpetual motion machine now if you go to Wikipedia you can see pictures of them and they're very ingenious these perpetual motion machines are basically rather simple they're based on a loop think of a loop and put different weights along the loop and then have it spin Ok these people would say that the amount of spin on one side of the loop is enough to keep the thing moving for ever and you can extract energy from this years later when people discover magnets then people would do the same thing with magnets they would get a loop made out of wire put magnets around it to try to spin it and hope that the magnetic field on one side would be sufficient to pull the loop and you would get a perpetual motion machine Well thousands of inventions like these have been reposed none of them work as a consequence after thousands of years of frustration physicists finally said Ha you can't do it and that of course is the 1st law of thermodynamics you can't get something for nothing the total amount of energy is conserved now Magnus is of course more sophisticated because the force that the magnetic pushes with is perpendicular to the direction of the fuel lines and that is the fundamental reason why people get confused and think they can create perpetual motion machines when actually you can not because the force of a magnet is at right angles to the direction of the magnetic field and that's the reason why you cannot extract usable energy so sorry about that. That thousands of people have tried over thousands of years and nobody has created a professional motion machine Ok Moving right along let's take a short commercial break and after the break we're going to continue with open mike on science fantastic give us a call have a question you. Worth of the work of the here. What would be presumably. Would be our own minute but what about gravity would be immediately. Or would be a lot. Of light we would be. Picked for a certain time well Norm and us go fast any question that goes right to the heart of general relativity Einstein's crowning achievement of 1915 1st of all Isaac Newton the guy who started modern physics I think didn't said that gravity travels instantaneously fast so if the sun were to disappear right now right now the somebody disappear you would feel the effect of that immediately and so the Earth would be flung into outer space like a ball in a string if you let go of the ball light of course would take 8 minutes but we would feel the effect even before the light arrives Well along comes Einstein who says not so fast not so fast nothing can go faster than light he said and therefore it would take 8 minutes for the shock wave of gravity to finally reach the earth and fling the earth into outer space but how do you prove that well Einstein's theory of general activity says that gravity is really a fabric and so think of putting a bowling ball in the middle of a trampoline that the bowling ball sinks into the Champlin net and the earth is like a marble marble going around well if that's true and then you suddenly remove the bowling ball then there's a shock wave ripples emerge from the center of the Champlin that and it takes a fraction of a 2nd for the marble to be flung into outer space because bass is a fabric it takes time for waves to propagate along the fabric and so that's a new picture introduced by Einstein So who's right Einstein is right. It turns out if I get 2 neutron stars and have them rotate around each other they lose energy precisely like Einstein's equations predict So think of the 2 bowling balls to bowling balls rotating around each other on a trampoline that they lose energy because energy waves vibrate along the trampoline net and sooner or later they will eventually collide and so right on the dot when we do this measurement with actual neutron stars in outer space we find that they are pulled toward each other exactly as Einstein predicted but once again you're listening to Science fantastic with Professor me CIO give us a call have a question answered cold 804498250 far is the number to call during the week to get your question to Professor Kaku That's 804498254. See. W w. Our source for you energy production I mean I think. For the next 2 years Well Michael let's break it down decade by decade I think within the next 10 years we'll still have chaos in the energy markets and that is no one white knight there's no one dominant energy source that can rival fossil fuels because believe it or not oil pound for pound is packed with energy much more then in a conventional battery and so fossil fuels will still be a dominant player for the forseeable future however beyond that timeline signed to look beyond 10 years then renewable technologies become cheaper and cheaper wind solar geothermal right now they're still more expensive than fossil fuels but in 10 years time we'll see a dropping of their cost so they become competitive so in 10 plus years we could enter the renewable energy era then in a 20 year time frame everything changes again by then fusion power becomes an option the French are betting the store building the i.d.e.a. Are fusion reactor in southern France is a $10000000000.00 euro project the United States Russia the European Union Japan Korea are all backing it and that could be a game changer However even though it's slated to become operational in 2019 it could take another 10 years to make it operational and cheap that is commercially viable So in other words by 2030 we may see the hydrogen era blossom will have hydrogen in the form of fuel cells hydrogen solar and hydrogen fusion and the energy source for fusion reactors is seawater ordinary seawater is enough to drive a fusion reactor so I say now. In a 50 year time frame we could be entering the hydrogen era well in the meantime of course we have global warming kicking in and global warming could in a day some of our cities on that same time scale so it could be a race against time but in the long term carbon dioxide may be a temporary problem the problem for the next 2030 years but in that period of time we might really mess up the planet Earth so let's hope that we can go to the hydrogen era before we see the worst effects of Lobel warming Ok Moving right along let's take the next listener phone call my name is Craig and I'm calling from all over Richie going on to 92.7 in managed Michigan. And my question is you were just talking about airplanes flying in. The wing or for that all my life grade school but how does that work when the airplane is flying upside down. Crystal grody. Ok you ask a very interesting question that has lots of practical applications we've all seen airplanes fly upside down However if the dynamics of the wing are such that the lift is created by the teardrop shape of the wing then how can airplanes fly upside down and there is as follows It turns out that a very high velocities you cannot use just Bernoulli's principle but know this principle is the reason why airplanes can fly at normal speeds but you have non-linear eddy currents effects very complicated effects come in and so then it becomes the angle of attack that allows you to fly so let's break it down if you take a wing and slice it you see that is teardrop shape and that when wind goes over the top of the airfoil it decreases in pressure it increases in speed but decreases in pressure therefore the top of the wing we have a low pressure area or a partial vacuum and some people say 90 of a partial vacuum on top of the wing then air on the bottom of the wing pushes up and that's why airplanes fly Ok that's why birds fly However when you get to a very very fast philosophies other secondary effects become dominant is also the angle of attack Think of the angle at which this winning hits the air you would see that air hits the bottom of the wing and that pushes the wing up so you see there are 2 effects here you have Bernoulli's principle we said you have a low pressure area over the wing therefore the wing wants to go up and the angle of attack so that air hits the bottom of the wing as it hits the wing that pushes the wing up and so when a plane flies upside down is the latter a fact that becomes nominate because otherwise as you correctly pointed out all planes would crash to the ground if it was just Bernoulli's principle that kept airplanes afloat and so you have to use different equations and different sources of lift when you go to higher and higher velocities because air. At that point becomes viscous and you have to use a different set of assumptions is no longer like a simple gas he becomes very viscous when you are very very high velocities and that's why airplanes yes indeed they can fly upside down Ok Moving right along let's take the next listener phone call I did and from a government Obama they seem to think it won't 7 point. One I describe Well you ask a question that intrigues scientists about 100 years ago including Lord Reilley and he was the one who finally figured out why sunsets are red and why the sky is blue 1st of all take a look at a rainbow on one side of the rainbow we have red and on the other side of the rainbow we have blue in fact all the colors are Roy g. Bit of are all y g b i v Ok And it turns out that blue light scatter is the most and therefore when you look at the sky you're looking at scattered light light that scattered away from the sun when you look at sunset you're looking at un scattered light are you looking directly at the sun and that's why when you look away from the sun during the daytime it's blue because you're looking at scattered light but at sunset you're looking at the sun directly you're looking at an scattered light and that's why it's red so blue sky is the most red scatters the least and that's why the sky is blue Well unfortunately we've run out of time once again and this has been science fantastic with Professor meets yo Kaku go to my website and Kaku dot org am k k u dot org And you can always call have a question you need answered cold 804498255 is the number to call during the week to get your question to Professor Kaku That's 804498255.
