Show I know no matter what really bust me up about our show is no matter how much we prepare. There's there's got to be some kind of axiom sort of like the mount of time you have to fill you'll fill it well I think what we need to do is a trick I used to do and I'm very very very 1st got into radio a 1000000 years ago I set my clock ahead a half an hour and then forgot that I did that and just let it go and it's like if we set every time piece we have a half an hour ahead well and the trick is forgetting about it well that's the trick yeah because you sit there in bed and you go you know I can make this time it's all right I got another kid when I think it's nice for the 4th time but it's a great way to start the morning and have you noticed the sunshine here start to get light. You need to pull the thing up buddy well here in the big last show we're pulling the thing out Oh Lord. I know it's a beautiful morning in Anchorage Alaska. And notice how the sun shine at night what a beautiful sunset Yes and we're gaining like 2 and a half minutes of daylight every day every day every day too bad we can't gain 2 and a half minutes in our lives every day when that be something if there's serve a good bottle that Mir is a. Counter doodad going on in our lives what a great morning and thanks so much for joining us the big Alaska show our show today we are going to play pieces from last week we were in Seward Alaska celebrating our Levantine anniversary on the air and we were very honored to emcee the polar bear jump off the 32nd annual polar bear jump off in Seward Alaska and Mike Ford and I this was our 1st time to do it together yeah and we were on the dock thankful for that in the past what they do is they would put us in the Coast Guard little boat and put us out in the middle of the water and we wouldn't and then the drop of a microphone and that always sort of made me nervous that this here comes this is going to go. Live Wire been handed power on the water and and I mean the all thing it lacked was like a little helmet Yes but it was it was just a wonderful event Now interestingly I thought it was going to be a little warmer than it was because we were getting a lot of snow and it was like 25 degrees but there was a good brisk and in the interview you'll hear Jess talks when the jumpers Newark American Cancer Society it was like minus 2 chill factor Oh is that right yeah and the water was 34 degrees I thought I was just being wimpy I was cold. And we were dressed for it we were actually and these people were out Nergal's skivvies lining up to jump and raise money for the American Cancer Society but we're going to we're going to play some pieces from that and what we did was we emcee the polar bear jump and then later on that evening we did what we've done for the last several years is we do a thing called the Top 10 jumper awards and what that is the top 10 jumpers who raise the most money we honor them we do a show around them and we record it is a big Alaska show. And then we take our little pieces unedited together and and we had our audience also do our tall ask a tale I was impressed by the market willingness. To do. Well let's make great yeah and so we have those pieces we're going to share with you and let's see what else oh next week we're going to have people from the Fur Rendezvous Oh you know talk about what's going on 2017 we I was taken you know we need to go get is we always have our good friend Neal Haglund doing sort of a drive by and doing a little bit on the day of the miners and trappers ball yes but in talking with Ruth Williams with the Fur Rendezvous she suggested we get him because he had surgery on his knee I think he's calm blessing so he won't be mobilize so much no we may try to get him in along with others talking about the for rendezvous in the activities and then the following week we have Valentine's Day Wow And this is one year I finally get to do a Cortez again because I haven't had that opportunity is last few years but we've put together a quartet will be seeing for the Midnight Sons doing we're going to be doing our fundraiser for the Midnight Sons chorus so this would be the new edition of the hit men of love as a city yeah it's every you know it's their hint of love $5.00 or 4 point. 0 is like the name for a quartet to be something like 3 good looking guys and no that's. You know it's early morning. But so I'm going to be pushing that next week and what that involves is we go out with our courts and we're all dressed up and we have a real nice card that comes from you who signs it and we have a long stem rose and then we've got a song and we have a very pretty one that I think is going to be new and different and so we'll have more information about separate way to go Man Oh it's and we also do something that's different we do the reading of the love scroll the reading of the loves for all the yes the highly coveted read of the love scroll which is part of our package which is unique to any other sing Valentine's around and so will provide that the how the hip men of love ladies and gentlemen and for all you guys out there let me tell you something man for all you guys out there who. Really want to impress you get your bacon out of the fire and. You know we save your bacon Betty. And. Yes we do we and as we point out that we have such an impact on your your loved one. Is like a tall ask you tell but it's. Hard cement is it written in chocolate I mean it is actually mentioned the love girl is parchment but we have such an emotional impact on the women we sing to us that. The attorney general has required us to issue a warning. Are we required by law to it's your disclaimer that we can't be held responsible take a defeat be later with their heart or whatever what may have you later that evening and now we'll have and so we will be it'll be a fun show next week about for rendezvous and about Valentine's coming up. But you know Mike we would be remiss if we didn't start the big Alaska show out the right way Oh yeah yeah. I know if we didn't have it in the cup with this. You know I'm going to go out and dig out some some of that gravel parking lot that one we had a fun show guys. The key to a successful radio show especially an early Saturday morning radio show is a strong cup of coffee and nothing stronger than a big Alaska show Milind the intense early morning coffee for intense early morning in the gesture Alaska's dark cold extremes can be downright brutal for early morning wake up calls you might as well be wearing a sack a glacial silt the backside of a pair wet cards. You need big Alaska show blend this once we get this calf needs will slap your face like a beaver tail. And one taste says it all. Bitter biting with a specific gravity of the soul. Blim the intense early morning coffee early morning guess. That's how we roll here in the big Alaska show. When we come back we have recorded bits from last week's big Alaska show 11th anniversary show there at the 32nd annual polar bear jump off in Seward Alaska great morning great way to start the day here at am 750 k. Yeah that's right Hit Man I love the legacy runs deep in the. Last week we celebrate our 11th anniversary the big Alaska show in Seward Alaska the all-American city of of Seward Alaska the 32nd annual polar bear jump off and we emcee the jump Mike Ford and I did and the harbor was surrounded by the good citizens of Seward people came out to root on the jumpers who had gone and raised money thousands of dollars and then they line up in costumes and jump for those that they love and for those that are fighting cancer and one thing I've really thought about Mike and I mentioned this in one of our interviews is you know we sing barbershop we've got the hit man of love and and in a time like today it seems there are 2 things that bring people together one is music and the other is cancer. And that the polar bear jump has been. Is is such a remarkable event it's truly Alaskan that water's $34.00 degrees Mike the wind was blowing about I mean it was got about you know what was it. Probably minus 2 was into a factor and so people are frozen by the time I mean they jump in the water to warm up basically one of the interviews here is just gets wider and she works in the American Cancer Society we met her a number of years ago when she jumped as the flying carrot. Will one of the best costumes ever Yeah so it's a great story but Jess this is an interview we did with Jess the other day at the event and she gives good background on what the American Cancer Society does and about the event of some some really interesting background on it so let's go and roll that Mike but tell me your name and how you spell your name Jess doots Wyler j a e s s g u t z e w i our goods were either my grandparents were held moot Hellmuth and hoots about their mood brought force to create just him brought worse I love it here we are it's been few days since the 32nd annual polar bear jump off how many times have you jumped this is just my 2nd time I jumped 5 years ago when it was negative 37 and then I was told this year with the wind chills because it was a very windy as you remember it was about negative 2 is that what you predicted. On your thermostat you know but I heard it was like 34 degree water oh yeah but water wasn't as cold as I expect you know were you in the line of my team was number 21 so we froze we became human popsicles through the parade of the frozen nerds and then. On our way down waiting in line that was more brutal than jumping in the ocean one of things that Mike and I were conscientious of his keep moving as far as I'm concerned it can be an Oklahoma land rush job and I mean I go. So I met you how many years ago just 5 years ago either and you've been with the American Cancer Society For how many years I'm coming I'm 7 Wow I mean what's your position now my title is the senior market manager of community engagement I make sure things are just running smoothly in the office from large corporate accounts to making sure we have the correct volunteers engaged to make the events as a successful as possible to do market outreach like this and just kind of collaborating within the office like the big Alaska show where people start at the bottom and go down and like through there too. It's really funny Mike Ford goes with the good line through 2 choices. Might even be better than 2 well I get on him about any age and he sort of begrudgingly Tooth So it's you know resentment runs deep So how did you get involved with American Cancer Society I actually volunteered in my previous life with the American Cancer Society and their Daffodil Day program so I was in charge of volunteering in that corporate sector in the for profit industry and when their doors closed with the recession back in the lower 48 that affected us I called up my dear friend Sarah Robinson and said you know what I think I'm ready to leap over to the dark side of nonprofit and here I am 7 years later while what is the American Cancer Society do what are the benefits it provides So I think we're really no nationwide for the investment we make in cancer research so 2nd to the u.s. Government the American Cancer Society is the leading funder of cancer research and really that's where we've moved the marble we've funded such things like the 1st successful bone marrow transplant or the mammogram what we've learned through our own internal research that we've invested in that tobacco leads to. Back to use leads to cancer that obesity related side effects leads to cancer so we invest in early on researchers that are really trying to make a name for hours themselves that are innovative and outside of the box and we think of it as like the down payment for a mortgage we make that down payment they prove themselves and then they go on to be funded by the national government what we do locally also is so important and really in some cases is the factor between people receiving treatment and not so we have a lot of great local partners such as Raven Alaska and Penn air that help fly patients to and from and where the only state in the union that has a relationship with an airline like this in the American Cancer Society which is so important for Alaska I mean and that they're able to donate 3 free flights per patient per year and that's Raven Alaska along with half price for a caregiver and then Penner will do the same to free flights for a patient and half price for a caregiver so we really take ourselves as we help get people to and through treatment so then when they're in the city where they're getting that treatment will put them up and lodging will be basically like that for cancer patients and then have emotional support whether it's they need a wig or help kind of seek out other services through other nonprofits that will help support them in their journey you've been there for 7 years have you seen any changes or advances that come out in the 7 years that from when you started absolutely So I think when I started they were really to be in their heart about 250 lives being saved today due to the research and education that we've done it's over 500 now which and 7 years I mean that's a pretty big number to add on to and and really just seeing how far are we are the American Cancer Society views views are that we need to educate about prevention in screening and detection this will be a disease that we could you know it could be like pull. Well we're taking a vaccine and it's done and I really think that but will there be a cure to cancer probably not in my lifetime but will cancer be a drug or a disease that we can live with for many many years absolutely people are surviving cancer much longer than they did just 70 years ago 25 years ago you know you're hearing people living much longer as a cancer survivor and I think that's important to know that something can be under who you work with and jumps and I were talking about that and both of us felt that she lost her mother and I lost my brother and my mother my mother was a smoker but my brother was young and everything was starting to happen for him in the house of this disease comes on course when you're younger tends to be more aggressive cancer we're talking that if they have that happen today we think that they would live longer Absolutely absolutely and and I think you know we just see that even in the survival rates of pediatric patients you know that's something that those in 20 years ago it was basically a death sentence now pediatric cancers are at like 97 percent survival rate I believe so looking at certain things like that of you know again but we've got so many more education things about detecting cancer early and preventing it that I think would really change people lives if we can kind of go back in that time machine 3040 years back oh man so. You jumped How was this jump this year different from the flying carrot the flying carrot and I think I now have the name the leaping nerd. So it was this jump was special because I was doing it in in memory of my colleagues husband and. Because he enjoyed polar bear more than anyone I knew he was up there slope you know Easter's he was singing karaoke he took in all the festival all of the different and it is of the festival which is important because this isn't just jumping on the ocean this is a huge economic burst to Seward in the winter and I think that's an important part of the event that people forget about that what we bring down the highway to Seward is so important to them and it's so much fun I mean think about it we've all been like stocked in our houses and hermits for the last how many months get out and have fun and that really the Seward community embrace is us with open arms and kind of lets us run a little while down there and that's so fun and he took that to the next level on. And again just was a great human being so my team jumping for John just as nerds because John was an i.t. Guy here in town and and so that's why we donned our suspenders and way too high of pants and went out there and leapt in the ocean and had a good time I really appreciated the fact that when I was watching your outfit that you're going to pull your underwear you're not. Yourself or Mildred several but I was like these my hands are way too high way to reverence when you're off a long as about 25 square feet of exactly right of polyester material one of the nerds had a belt and suspenders so she was like crazy in the season either live or how can you take that so I call you the flying character described years ago because. He was made of copper well. Off so it was a go as nutritional items but I think I was the only one that got the memo because it was like a rabbit and then hula dancer and so anyway I had the this homemade Kerrick costume that was made out of fabric and I think aligned with an extra padding of cotton that people would wear like that for around the parade so it was the worst item to wear because I think I gained 50 pounds of what seawater I was on or possibly in there your thing there could have been lighter is like you know and taken and yet. When I saw you there with your care look at my says that God and of course the myth grows over the years but we claim that we saw a more diverse gathering. I'm sure you did and that care wasn't pointing at the bear break the ice that you're so they had to bring people into. The ice that way but when I got out of the water I just remember thinking this was the worst idea why didn't I just you know I just I mean. Really we've forgotten to care it was tapering. To rebuild Oh yeah so the nerd costume was better but I did have a go pro on this year for a couple folks that were doing media and the medal on the go program so cold in the water when I jumped out I used probably some profanity that was not appropriate but I was like get this thing off it's very easy and when you come out you get this burn and yeah. So we just wrapped up the polar bear jump what next well we always are we always have another event around the corner so our next big event is the Wine and Food Festival which is also and it's 32nd year and that has really grown grown to be the largest fundraiser in the state of Alaska for the American Cancer Society and it's a 7 course meal with 7 different pairings. Have on all donated from the wonderful industries here in town we have a different course done by different chef so it's a fantastic we'll you're just not getting Robert hotel chicken and then we do something that's very important we do a paddle raise which is kind of like a call auction that is restricted directly to research and again. I always let people know and I'm proud to say that that money does leave the state from the American Cancer Society because if we didn't allow that were never going to find research to then advance treatments advance education so yes we do fund researchers if there was Researchers up here if we had a research university or something of course if there's applicants we look at those but a lot of times those people are in large cities like Denver or Portland or Seattle so we do fund research with that and again I let people know that if you've had a mammogram before you've received the benefits of the American Cancer Society's research if you've ever gotten chemotherapy you've received the benefits a p.s.a. Exam you've received the benefits so there's so much out there that in circle comes back to us but again we have to have the right people get that money you know just like I was thinking about this you know I sing barbershop and and I was talking like forwardness a new and such of their bodies so anxious and divided these days I said but there are 2 things that bring people together music and cancer yes they do you are right yes they do so well you're you're a figure you'll always be grateful and. I know you're trying to go to the very point nerve I might have to be a nerdy carrot when you're. Here oh well save the suspenders. Anyway just hey thanks a lot for joining us on the big last show you're just such a winning way about you and I have to say that the. Staff you have the people you work with the American Cancer Society here in Anchorage Alaska I swear in jewels because they are a saint Cindy is a saint and the rest of us have cannot measure up to her sainthood but we do have a great team here and they have a lot of fun and that's important when you're dealing with such a serious subject but we know how to celebrate those that have won their battle and remember those we've lost and I think that's really important and we fight back against disease hard so be ready cancer you've got people loaded you don't fool us anymore that's right that's right cool and with Cindy the thing is Cindy is a saint but at least she has you guys because you guys are just a bunch of senators. You guys are a hoot Yes you are the virtual laugh track Well we'll get we try to rip it up and Seward pretty hard so it was sort of Seward is the reason they called the emergency wasn't clear the snow out there was clear you go yeah exactly Don't let those who are against come down the highway Yeah we have a great time down there and you know what it's the how they open their doors and they're so hospitable is just I have to give them round of applause they do a great job and we love polar bear Maryland and summer absolutely the the matriarch of of the polar bear Jumpoff and Seward Alaska and you're right sort of Alaska is truly the all-American city it is you're right you're right thanks just think. Of me Lady yeah she is and she's the president of her anchorage South rotary that I used to belong to. Man And and she's that new wave of young people that are making a difference you talk about you know we're always teasing the millennia old but this these are the kind of it's like. Chrissy Bell Oh yeah you know the this this whole group of people that are coming up they're just fantastic citizens and what a winner this Jess is what I and what a character in that carrot still always be one of my favorites like why you don't wear a costume it was like milk for which no I did it. But think about it was cotton and it jumps with that salt water and it turns into a salt. So you're listening to pieces that we took from last week's polar bear jump off in Seward Alaska and we'll return we're going to be playing some pieces from that evening of the top 10 jumper awards here on the big Alaska show at a.v.m. 750 k. Days are getting longer here beautiful morning great way to start the morning as we say designed reach your spirits not your blood pressure we're listening to pieces we did from last week's 32nd annual polar bear jump off in Seward Alaska it was also our 11th anniversary doing this show and we started in the humble beginnings there at the breeze in with Ron Hewitt the manager want to do a big shout out speaking the breeze in Mike went to a big shout out to the breeze in what wonderful hospitality weren't things and these people are just wonderful to deal with. So if you go to Seward check out the breeze in it's right there smack in the middle of town easy access to everything I loved the little there little restaurant waitresses were awesome yeah great food oh yeah man lift with your legs but maybe being sued and it will jump into it sure did and so now I don't know if we have that but you just heard if you're listening just a little bit earlier just gets Wyler is with the American Cancer Society she jumped again as part of her team and we did our top 10 jumper Awards and we had our guest doing some of the commercials and and and we actually had Jess trying to get out of our you'll hear her coffee break let's see let's see how her coffee how how she didn't her coffee break and let me just preface it this way. Our our advertising agency ad nauseum advertising. What makes them unique is that they only charge for the words that are usable right and what was brilliant about Jess is she was able to use words so we understand what she's trying to say but technically would not be charged by ad nauseum Ackley so she was able to go under the radar save money and this was her version of the coffee break that we do while we did it there at the re building last Saturday night folks the key to doing an early radio host. At that Mike folks the key to doing an early morning radio show especially a Saturday morning radio show is a strong cup of coffee and there's no stronger cup of joe than the big Alaska so blend the and tense early morning coffee for the intense early morning in the gesture the secret lies in the way it's brewed from taking the scraping from the bottom of the pot that been left on the burner from the day before in the sales department and it stays and one says taste oh oh. And one taste says it all. Left something on their. It's filled with some pretty amazing tales and Seward Alaska is no exception stories of the I did a rotten Mt Marathon are well known but one of the lesser known and perhaps the strangest took place in Seward in the late 1930 s. The subject matter had to do with an incident that involved an outhouse behind a popular roadhouse in the location in what is now known as the breeze in the outhouse was affectionately referred to as Ed's Bucksnort Palace a reference to a regular patron who frequented the road house and evidently had a noisy affinity to spend even more time in the little house out back one day Seward city council determined the outhouse posed a health hazard to the good citizens of Seward and sent a constable to condemn and close it down. Outraged by this action the owners and patrons of the road House pushed back citing by removing the outhouse the clauses the closest disability for relief was over a mile down the road behind the general store or a Bush whichever came 1st Besides they argued the palace contents are frozen most of the year to which the council pointed out if you're downwind it's the thought that will kill you. Who. If you got the attention of the sewer newspaper and published a story with the headline The Attack of the little shack out back.
