Sitting on the porch alone right now. And it's kind of he's trying to decide whether to rain snow or sleet stout Regis weather here today on the Georgetown vine I mean from Garden Valley there was probably 23 inch of snow on the side of the road which is actually lower elevation than. Georgetown but there's Miss Miller on the road here just pretty wet real bumi lots of the lots of thunder I didn't see any lightning but let's not get under so that's Sunday afternoon here on June whatever. Already well as a said earlier I'd been alone here today kind of lonely on the porch but. Because of that I thought we had a decent little different. Yesterday I got a notice from. P.b.s. P.b.s. Station out of San Francisco about a program they have it's a streaming program on early recordings and they need somebody. Back in l.a. . Rebuilt one of the original Electric recording machines and rebuilt one of the initial. Bank refunds and they got it all set up this is a project that was kind of headed by Jack White and. T.-Bone Burnett and they got all this equipment together and then started bringing people in to record on it to see what it sounded like in modern times and it's really a trip because the whole thing is it's a series of pulleys that turn turn a turntable around which then there's a stylus to cut the. Cut the record and. The way that the turntable goes around is on a pulley that is. Dropped from a table very slowly down to the floor and the time it takes the police to go from the top down to hit the floor is 3 minutes so when they start the recording the artist has 3 minutes to do their thing can stink over that because as that's the end and there's no redoing it when she do it that's it so. You get really you know interesting sounds that are really good. But. And there's none of the high production value in correcting that there is with modern recording and so they got a bunch of people come in and play I haven't seen the whole thing yet but of course Jack White was there doing his thing there was a rap artist who. Did a really interesting piece he sang a song for the 1920 s. It was a race song and I was just really incredible and then the last person I saw was just starting up with Elton John and so modern people playing on old equipment and it got me thinking about the old days of recording and when you start think about the old days record even if you're an old guy like me you know kind of pop back to publication as a series of records called the anthology of American folk music which was a 6 album compendium released back in 1952 by Folkways Records it was. It was a project was put together by disappear even very interesting guy named Harry Smith he was an experimental film maker and he also compiled the music from a. Collections of 70 eight's that he had gotten over the Times kind of in the 1940 s. And 1950 s. . The the little blurb on him says that Harry Smith was a West Coast mill maker bohemian and eccentric who read 1940 developed a hobby of collecting old blues jazz country Cajun and gospel records 70 eight's being the only medium at the time. And then in 1907 he met Mose Ashe who is a pretty together the Folkways Records in the 2 them got together and did this project and Smith selected recordings from between 127 when electronic recordings made. Music reproduction possible in 1032 when depression halted music sales so all of the records there all the songs he put together came beat were recorded between 19271902 then when the wind was finally released the anthologies was released in the. In the fifty's. It became the Bible really for all of the folk musicians guys like Bob Dylan Joan Baez. Dave on rock but the whole scene was happening in New York in the credits village has gone on to Harry Smith's work because this is where all the original old music was and. They could take this music and change it in and make it more modern or style that they could stylized to their liking and that's what happened. Earlier in the if you were listening to Aotearoa earlier in the hour . He told me that they played a song called cuckoo and that's one of the songs that's on this. The anthology of American foot music and what I'm going to do for the next hour is just play a whole bunch of songs off the anthology and remember this is old stuff this is these are things recorded back in the twenty's and thirty's so it's. It's a little different it's pretty raw and I hope you enjoy it start off with this one . Bonneville me all caravan on a man in. Cam chain wailing and. On. And. On. And. On. And. On. All the people who is ready for. Commerce to. Care for a few. Cars am going down to play cards and. If you can hours. You. Can't. Get. No new. Form parking our machine. And my dog. On. No. They come here and. They got married in speech and I. Can the marriage. Beat you see here. Forever here. And she's glad she had her 1st. Pair of course tonight. It's all right here that was. Clarence Ashley in court in 1909. In addition to the anthology in collecting the all of the songs Harry Smith also put out a book of course to go along with the all of this music and a little handbook in the handbook he. Tells you about each song so for instance with the that particular song the cuckoo bird. He gives you the information about its recording history and then he gives you a brief summary of what it's about and they're right to read this one says built cabin on a mountain see Willie go by cuckoo pretty bird was flies hollers cuckoo forth fly play cards in England Spain that be next game Jack of Diamonds known from old Rob pocket of silver gold that's a description of the sun pretty trippy here let's try another man. Take. Care of him. Get him. To. Go. Take his family and k. And look at. Him go. You can get him go. I'm sure you don't. Need it there you go. But it won't you. Won't you. Let it hold you. Down there you in. But it will heal. But it won't you. Ain't no you. It's Jenny. Carter really. Funny to me. Pretty. Funny to. Get home when he's doing try to reduce. It To. 22. That's why room go. You know in the ring you live this. Way. They do. They do. You. Do. You agree. That's why. You're hearing. To drive in. Like you would. But anywhere. But when. You're going to. Like it. But anyway. That's why. It's all right now in some. Well that's what we know as John Henry but. It is really called Despite driver blues and this particular version of it was and it was recorded by Mississippi John Hurt and then this was recorded back in the one. Thirty's. Let me get out my trusty book here and see it Harry Smith has the say about it. And you know it's. Yeah Spike driver blues her by Mississippi John Hurt. No. It doesn't have the. I can't see the date of the recording right here but it would be in the 929932 range. And of course. Later on in the fifty's and sixty's. People like Pete Seeger went and looked up a lot of these old guys who got them back and had been had they had a 2nd career tree in the folk revival that. Yeah the. Harry Smith has say that is here's a summary of the song Take him or Kerry to Captain Tillman go on Hammer kill John Henry won't kill me looking for me is Colorado the home John Henry left hammer lane side road John Henry still driving boy that went down that's where I'm gone. All right. The way the this anthology was set up was it was a total of. I think it's 12 records and it was there were 33 metre of recordings which was kind of a new. Technique back in those days but remember. Everything had been 70 eight's up until that time yes 40 five's came in at some point but all of these recordings were here in our recently done 78 r.p.m. And when Harry put the anthology together with ash. He put it on 283-1233 the 3rd disc and there are records and. He kind of divided unmap into 3 groups here with the social songs which were the songs people just couldn't sing around wherever and then the ballads and then there were songs of the more social. Meaningful songs and so there were 3 and he the covers were red white and blue red white and green I guess red blue and green he he was a mystic as well as a filmmaker in a. Anthology put together if you're interested and check him out you can google Harry Smith and it's kind of a good introduction to a very strange with actually a very important man in terms of. Folk music and American it today without Harry we probably would have been different that's for sure all right. Everything you'd uprated So let me see what we can do here. Which. I love this old stuff that I like a lot of the. Band It's a lot of early judgments Stefano but one of those on right now this is the. Mississippi Mississippi judge Man I hope that. I've got this right. All right we'll give it a try. That plant. Is in a way big. That he is a big dog. He goes out and well. Let's get back all that he is wrong. Thank you there. Is. Always a good own they're. Going to. Be. Lou. That is that was the. In the Memphis jug band do in k.c. Mon the description of it is that I heard Casey blow like woman on board when back on k.c. Road going to love baby never before to hear the judge on their end and love the sound of a good judge hears or another when. Great bands write out. Our. People are. Our. Dark out. And I can't get out of. Their. Goal. All right more Jay music you're listening to Kevin k.r.p. F.m. Churchtown and it is a little past 630 and we are having general lazy.
