Last week we talked about some of the crazy travels I've been doing I as you may know travel all over the world for my other job and see some pretty interesting technology as I do it's it's pretty wild to go to places like Southern Africa and see people basically doing all their banking all their online stuff right from their fall it's all done by phone or internet cafe there just because you know there aren't that same number of computers in people's homes in some of these countries so for many places in the world the Internet is seen through an interactive through a smartphone or a tablet here in our country in the u.s. We obviously have incredible blessings here and so we generally interact with the Internet through larger screens through a laptop and a desktop your computer at work but the internet is different when you're getting into it through a smartphone you have to use apps and helpers and I don't know how many of you have gone to a website on your smartphone that you can see was clearly made for desktops because it's unreadable and you have to sit there and zoom and move around on the page to figure out where the next button is and so on. All of that is changing I think as we move forward the Internet is being optimized for mobile and those old desktop interfaces in the old laptop let me log into a website that's that's changing to a lot of that is it can sense how you're getting to the page and then it presents it in a way. That is appropriate for your screen size you know what let's let's go right to the phones here I have a couple of calls coming in let's go with Scott on line one Hey Scott how you doing it hey I was going I was wondering you know I haven't been hearing you know member that vulnerability with the security that all the chips basically had it it was about the hyper threading or you know or whatever I haven't been hearing much about what's the what's the fix Have they done a software fix or are they still trying to work on a hardware processor no once those processors are made the vulnerabilities baked in and so when you come out with a hardware vulnerability there isn't a lot you can do now in software engineering around the problem but it's still like Rick the row hammer attacks that you can do on certain processors are still valid attacks so are they coming up with new hardware because yeah I heard something like one of the chips came out and said it was you know it was to avoid It was called capable it didn't say it did it it's well he's capable so there's yeah there's the theoretical possibility of it and then there's what we've actually seen in the wild and the theoretical possibility covers far more processors in computers than what we've actually seen exploited so that's the difference but the row here attack definitely is still possible and until all those computers are replaced they will be vulnerable but we're talking you know hundreds of thousands of computers so right now what they move faster than they are because know what's going to I mean what is Intel going to do a recall on 100000 computers and replace the processors then you have to replace motherboard everything else. I don't I don't see that happening until we have that until we take cyber security as seriously as we take human physical security and just like we had to mandate seatbelts and and you know emissions controls and certain say minimum safety features in cars my personal opinion is all that needs to happen in cyber as well right but were years away from that because there's like 2 Congress people that even know what cyber is and the rest of them are clueless so it's you know we've one computer scientist right now currently in Congress and that until that changes I don't think they're going to take it as seriously as you and I would. And so if it were a normal alarm clock what would you do right you would just unplug the phone or unplug the alarm but this was a phone so it had a built in battery and it was in Japanese so I couldn't even read how to turn it off or mute it or hits news I don't know what any of those buttons are in Japanese so. All of you look tech folks out there are going to laugh I ended up taking a phone and putting it in the tub in the bathroom and shutting the door because I couldn't turn off the alarm on it and I didn't know the button sequence in Android you know to do that and I couldn't read the Japanese writing to know how to do it I didn't want to call the front desk at 4 in the morning and say since I want to turn the phone alarm off. I have so frustrated with way of l.g. K 20 v. I mean that the reception is so horrible on it I just I just can't bear it anymore . Or like no no when you Larry and enter the when you sort out phones if you like doing a test you know the cell phones which ones have some of the best cell reception well because it's aggravating a lot times allowed for bars on the phone if I go to call. Call never even go through yeah I've had that issue. But mostly it's when it tries to do y. Fi calling. When it's wife I calling. It hangs up a lot of Doesn't a lot of times it doesn't work and so I turn that off and just use l.t.e. Exclusively but as far as low signal goes that's pretty tough because each different model phone as you know has a different. Level of antenna in it and there's minimum levels for the various carriers but then different types of phones can do have other tricks for instance the dual sims in the new i Phones can switch between of arise in tight network and 18 t. Type network for international roaming and that's a trick that phones didn't you didn't used to be able to do unless you swapped out the sim card into Ok so it's 1st testing the range on a that's a tough one because I never believe those maps that you see from the carriers I know it is so deceiving because well I'll talk to you guys before I go out you know into the desert all the time in the break oh yeah you know some see your letter chasing the birds photograph the birds you know just get so frustrated because I got a lot of different patients does the letter does a winter does I'm right yeah I mean this k. 20 it's a user friendly fode but the internal that is essentially triple it was horrible yeah. No it is and in it isn't always as advertised. There right yeah the only way I would know to do that is you'd have to know somebody at the phone company that actually rolls around and does the testing for them on the various modem types but I don't even know if they do that as often anymore because there's a new and different phone models and while they do share similar chips they don't they are always all built to the same spec and that's really what matters when you get into the range of what you can pick up. Well I think what's really sad here is why the cell phone manufacturers took out pull out entire. I mean are we to put the consumer that we can't physically handle I think a lot and I think it's just because everything needs to be as skinny and flat as possible and it's a matter of convenience we don't want big bulky stuff in our pockets that's why flip phones kind of diet is there just they were big and now we expect a phone to your smooth thin pane of glass and anything that isn't to that resonant cell very well and so you just can't put the types of parts into a phony used to now I'm sure there's you know camping phones and military grade stuff that is built in that old way like the old Nokia is that you know you battery would last a week but you just you just said it was not a touchscreen or anything right there are still sort of things like that but. I think just the market is demanding everything be a thin Smoove device and because of that we just don't have the design choices that So for manufacturers used to have right eventually phones aren't even going to be phones really they're just going to be little computers your phone might be in your watch or something but they'll just be little computers and that's what we'll think of them as just just like I was saying earlier in the program overseas people interact with the Internet and think of computers as what's in your pocket not what's on your desk because they don't have one on their desk but they always have one in their pocket Yes So but I appreciate the call and that's a that's a tough one to know the actual range for that be you'd have to know somebody at a cell phone store that goes out and test that stuff well this is this again is when I talk to people of rising they they tell me that the i Phone is forsake their concern has the best and system. I hear you and so the because we can't add memory you have to buy something with a little more but.
