Quite a lot of steps on the feel like it's like a life theft I just want to know if that's what. I mean really appreciate it I want to get back to the show thanks Armstrong you get He's holiday hangover on Am 760 you're much a bunch of amateurs my it's nice weather swing Indy's or c. Bombs what there's too much there's way more cussing in America than there used to according to a new study. Specifically to be garnered specifically in books and this is kind of interesting Mark Twain once wrote and I think they actually verified this this isn't an Internet Mark Twain quote Mark Twain once said flying leaves me hungry and thirsty I hate the airlines Mark Twain quoted as saying The Internet is to children what blah blah blah. Martin actually probably did say it is there ought to be a room in every house to swear in because it's dangerous to have to repress an emotion like. The swearing room yeah I like the idea. That certain young people in my family would be there a lot. But I'll find out if she's listening I'll keep an eye on my text new study shows that. There's been a dramatic increase in swear words in American literature over the last 60 years as sure this is I'm surprised anybody sifting through the text of 1000000 of books. Books The study found that m f are was used 678 times more often in the mid 2000 than in the early fifty's. Well that's quite an increase. Does that mean anything for society is that a good thing bad thing nothing is that a nothing and I think the names just change have the insults just changed the quote unquote obscenities changing mostly that's a that's a big one and a half or was used. Obviously the forward I can't say the forward although soon I will be able to grade. What I have been practicing is that what you mean or want and you can tell them did God tell. My except he didn't actually say m.f. Or was used 678 times more often in literature than in the mid 2000 than in the early fifties occurrences of s. Bombs multiplied 69 times and half was 168 times more frequent I say you know Arnold. Big banks. Wall Street. Kimmel sun as the series answers your business your people your this is misleading I won't be party to this they looked at a 1000000 books between 1950 and the year 2008 this is all you know novels and what not literature looking for uses of the words ass p f c c s m f n t I'm sorry p. They picked these words because they were described as the 7 Words You Can Never Say on Television by comedian George Carlin in 19720 p. As in cat No as in you're a nation seriously now. Overall they found the writers were significantly more likely to use each of the 7 swear words since the year were Year $950.00 well the incredible increase in the use of m.f. There is not like some rise in matter Ophelia. Does this matter. No he's doing that more often does this match the decline of phrases like jack wagon and you know whatever the substitutes for these words would have been pastor Al Yeah I get what Joe was saying Yeah I was going to bring that up like in 1950 could you have said there has been a study of a 1000000 books since the year 1900 and jack wagon has increased you know 8000 times used to be no decent person would say jack wagon but now that's a coarsening of our time exactly. Mike is the biggest since Ronald Reagan Ok. I have long thought that the art of the insult has declined horribly from. You know he is a true. And a coward you know May the sun never set on his grave I mean people used to be so much more creative now a few years for this all here it's terrible you got like your insults of the thirty's man they were good as the hey day of intelligent insults the guy who did the study said I expected to swear words were on the increase I mean that's obvious to everyone I didn't realize it would be 28 times more. This increase happened at the same time that the culture increasingly promoted self-expression and individual ism individuals is a cultural system that emphasizes the self more and social rules less which is interesting so as social rules fell by the wayside the people were told to express themselves were making more common. So yeah there's a lot that goes on with that whole individual ism being more concerned about yourself and whether or not you're happy than whether or not society's happy there's a lot that goes hand in hand with that any good right right so my favorite h.l. Mencken in sorts insults rather tin horn politician with the manner of a rural corn doctor and the meaning of I am actor God Thank you everybody will be back soon you good Caroline. This is so much faster to just say he's an m.f. Or isn't and having all those words yeah that's a. That's a pretty good counter and these are sort of question with all this sort of stuff as obviously were we were we overly tightwad it back then had her panties in a bundle. Repressed whatever repressed Oh pressed and now we got it right or was that plane by some sort of societal rules that helped keep us together and it's a truck with my point of view on this and a lot of things that we've talked about in the past is that society veers from one extreme to another and there's probably a brick Oh it's gone where we got it right but then we keep moving in one direction or another and now I think we're moving toward complete lack of regard for our neighbors and the rest as a society. Away from you know there are times in the 20th century where he dared not be any sort of non conformist in any way to the point that it was oppressive and rigid and back. You know veer back again someday probably has a big can you just Ok I have a very big there's only one way to settle at well I grew up in rural Midwest I don't know how it was the rest of the country but I know the idea of a female dropping f. Bombs was pretty unique. Yeah even even like when I was in college it wasn't just any girl that would say that would drop an f. Bomb you know and now it's you know anybody anybody with your boss with a woman who would drop an f. Bomb was surely a trollop and a harlot. My man you bet she's not a longshoreman sure what she does drop the f. Bomb more than I do and I'm trying to curb. You. Like are you going to stand for my momma dinner. For she says it's an escape to a good start keep going. But she says the f. Word more often than I would like I will see I have a I have a meter for that too or a threshold where I think it's too much but Shawn was behind you shaking his head so I want to get in that's the greatest word it's the most versatile if it's a noun it's a verb it. Is everything this is the best but so you have that well that's all true but you have no limits for you meet a girl how often she drops the f. Bomb and it makes no impression on you about the North she says of the more likely there's going to be a 2nd date. That somebody who knows how to express themselves clearly like an adult you know where you're from a positive moment you're going to talk. Thrown back in for them my mom's an adult she can and would say wow this is great now I'll know my only problem I can't I can't picture how does a longshoreman talk. To you so that's right now. As aggressive as an actual longshoreman talk us I'm sorry as you your middle name. Or that one word as a wow now well I no longer feel that way I guess in general about women dropping f. Bombs but you know but there's a time in a place there is every time when I'm around I'm in a place and the frequency see there you that's where it gets a little more controversy Oh how much is too. Much is she you know I have a golf buddy absolutely terrific guy but he cannot describe like what time it is without an f. Bomb 3 you know what. I'm reevaluating my 3 o'clock already if you're using it as your verbal crutch like a pause like and I'm like well we went over to this 7 thing there was is this f. And I just using it like that and I believe that's probably where I draw the line but if you're creative and forceful and use it in unique and powerful ways I'm all for it's the new Yeah no. Right is not a verb one thing to eat we have to straighten up before we move on is how have you attempted to curb her use of the word I just tell her I'm like. Stop it. Babe stop it Ok but now I don't I don't I'm not sure if I'm being. You know you have. To do Baby Well it's like the rapper ludicrous says I want a lady mistreats but a freak in the bed. That's Ok. Don't work out you know bow and just chat I don't need to hear that for it all the time you use it once in a while it remains powerful there you know what well said Vincent Well Sal casually diseases like this f. And pasta deafened good like that or. Do you think if you get another glass half and water. This crisis anything day isn't it may have been sunshine and it was one version or one sentence Whoever's. Going to methane gas my infant car like that. Instead of bury your hello or really have to. Go up you'll find this is an interesting the a.c.l.u. Number 100 I thought was interesting there's a tie at 100 they're both Jerry Lewis movies I've ever seen the king of comedy I don't love that I love that movie too but it's not really funny I recall it being that funny it's it's more of a weird crime thriller So yeah it's like a dark comedy out of weird Take But you know I'd love that movie I'll skip from $100.00 to like 20 I'll do 20 fast Ok I'll do this fast. Funniest movies of all time according to all the film critics some of these you know when you talk to film critics they really like to pick something like modern times by Charlie Chaplin from 1936 which I think Charlie Chaplin's great everything like that when they love choosing stuff well kind of the purpose of this list was they did something similar work of just that the best movies of all time and now it's almost 0 comedies appeared in the list I thought well that's kind of weird So let's let's do a comedy specific version of Go fast Blazing Saddles great The Lady Eve I thought that was a feminine product for when you're having your Lady time Blazing Saddles was number 20 Yeah Ok my wife now refers to her Lady time even though when I said it she thought it was awful and she told me never to say it again she now refers to it as her Lady time maybe my 2nd crawled maybe that Ok Sean and woman will start talking about their Let me count that as a victory. Jr Buster Keaton 1924 couldn't great haven't seen it should be only after like maintaining 80. I don't know if there is a analog to go fast so we don't get on up on all those. Bring Up Baby The Great Dictator Charlie Chaplin again money python in the holy grail hard to argue with His Girl Friday to be or not to be all admit I've not even heard of a number of these movies let alone seen them modern times Charlie Chaplin and 12 Big Lebowski at number 11. How about the bow ski right next to a Charlie Chaplin movie I ates It's a classic that fits you just wonder in in damn near 100 years will people be talking about The Big Lebowski I don't know I'm curious as to what kept it out of the top 10. Yeah so here you go Big Lebowski 11 Here's your top 10 the general with Buster Keaton from 1926 the 2nd Buster Keaton movie probably funny. And Buster Keaton he's one year old time he's funny I like Buster Keaton stuff I'm just in there silent films See got to get into that whole prize that many walks into something and that is this a book. I had of that Buster Keaton movie at number 9 it's certainly on my list This is Spinal Tap Oh for sure among the greatest things ever right. Number 8 Here's a great movie critic sort of thing Number 8 play time by Jacques Tati from 1967 new . I'm sure it's very droll. See how they're taking to the specially if you can take it in the original French number but it got beat up at number 7 airplane Oh nice never be over montra ground a airplane and number 7 speaking of the surely you must be kidding Yeah exactly did they invent that with that movie I certainly give them credit for 1st time I ever heard it and it was hilarious that that's one of my great. Memories from college. Old friend of mine from college is in town and hanging out with him yesterday and and I got to thinking how many years it's been that I've known him because we met when we were 19 years old and it was horrifying to think how many spend but you cannot make new old friends there is nothing like being around people that have known you like from the beginning and all your ups downs successes failures personal private life if there's just something different about that because there's no point in putting on any phony notes whatsoever because they know everything they know who you really are at the core and there's just something about that like the rapper Drake says no new friends and you know the Old Goodwin's Anyway I remember in college getting together and watching that movie with a keg of beer and like 40 people guys and girls getting hammered and it was so fantastic. I can't. Tell me I'm a doctor no I mean I'm just not sure if yes. For another 2 hours. You can take a guess for another 2 hours. How do you not let that kills me. My God So Number 6 another. Money by phone sort of movie Life of Brian interesting I thought I figured Holy Grail would be the top rated one interesting number 5 Duck Soup Joe would be happy to hear that great Marx Brothers movie Groundhog Day it for interesting I like Groundhog Day I wouldn't put it in my list of the top 10 comedies of all time fundus cussing point about Groundhog Day How how long do you think he was reliving the same day. But how many times that he relive that day because the firies go from anywhere from a couple months to like thousands of years all really because he teaches himself to play the piano that's true it would take a very long time arises the the route of the bank vault guys are the security people that you know if they didn't. Get so bored to the point where you're creating new ways to kill yourself and you're you're killing the old buddy from college and you know invariants you have these different weird fantasies there's some really deep Internet threads about how long you was actually in limbo there you should have that on your blog. Good choice for music here I Got You Babe Sonny and Cher cause that's a song on the radio you got it every morning when he wakes up of course you already have it because you're a genius every morning the radio goes off he wakes up that he wasn't that successful was it no no the inner now and then when it came out I saw the theater it was kind of a dud and it is caught on it's a regular. We dropped her off at college last week Thursday officially the day I had been thinking about for ever kind of picks her in and just thinking about the before the during making sure I had my plenty of tissues in my pocket for the tear fest and then think about afterward what it's going to be like afterward. You know and then they come home to the empty nest because you're wrapping up your child rearing Yeah well yeah yeah it's my my youngest kid and and so but that was last week when we dropped her off Thursday in and then headed up to see some friends in Pennsylvania and got home to the empty nest last night hours later than we're supposed to thanks every airline in America. So yeah it's a hell of a weekend just texted little day she's starting classes or 1st college class this morning some point she's off and running do you have the app where you follow around Yeah it's almost like going. To a friend of mine the other day and they took they just took their youngest off to college in there and having a very same conversations and feelings and trying to figure out what their marriage looks like now and that's what the stuff like what we do every day but anyway they got. They were like looking at this she was Mom was looking this up on her phone oh she got out of that meeting she's headed over to class now I have to get paranoid there's nothing more you can do that and it's fairly common I guess they put a tag in her ear No I guess it's a common failing it's got a name it's not just it's got a name for that specifically for the sort of thing you know it's entirely possible I'm missing something here I often am it's voluntary on both ends I guess that that's like the last thing I know I get of that is the single last thing I want it unless it's like her sending me pictures of mashing with a dude I mean. Tuck in her collection of the writings of h.l. Mencken which she talked took to school with her which was a lovely a little gift to me because that was a gift from me. But Off she goes and you know I got more and more tale to tell when we get time to do it but. The thing I'm sure yeah. I've got no time he's not a newbie and he's muttering again that stupid more muttering about what's the point anyway the end times are here that's true the end times are here that should be our headline most segment is Armstrong and get ease holiday hangover am 760. Could be a heck of a year what's going to happen with North Korea how about the investigation into trouble be talking about it on the Armstrong and get the show man some heavy stuff also some laugh some fun let's not take life so seriously let's not hate people we disagree with we'll take a look at the news the issues the controversies the stuff you care about on the Armstrong you get the show during 28 yeah weekday mornings Tony in the Armstrong and you get the show Armstrong you get a 5 am to 10 am on Am 76 to talk in breaking news. And $760.00 traffic it's pretty quiet on the roadways not seeing any trouble for you earlier car fire and a decent Mission Gorge has cleared to know that you're trying to trip on the $163.00 is uneventful trip. The needle 5 and the 5 moving smoothly and trouble free on the 15th that is fucking level introducing a car redesign the future here and now he'll need 2800 Volvo x c 60 stepped inside it today at your local dealer although much later today at noon on a 60 I love people. They're actually having a freak cold snap the middle of August it was the coolest weather anybody could remember in August is fantastic you missed some 107 degree day I'm sorry to to hear that I mean we're like borrowing hoodies from our friends because we were completely unprepared so drop little day off as I said. Earlier in the show on Thursday at school the college or university of her choice for some reason feel compelled to guess where she is and then email us and say Is that right I'm not telling you and by the way something what you kidding Yeah. But you live your own life but it's a it's a major university on the East Coast there with a great program what she's into which is you know your political science the science international relations stuff but so a couple of aspects of the drop off number one because we live on the West Coast she's going to school on the East Coast we traveled with more suitcases than I have traveled with ever in my entire life checked all sorts of bags we got these big heavy bags crammed with all her stuff I rented the biggest vehicle a Ford Expedition I have ever rented in my life it's like piloting of suburban home like a tract home on tires so I drive my kids around and yeah it's it's fantastic once I got used to it you can't park anywhere but it's Follow your heart yeah it's a bit challenging her and oh man of pride myself on my parking ability as you know I'll stand here on the 5th floor and critique people's parking during the commercial break he was here is a very calm term you know what he does he actually stares out the window you know yourself. Secondly and he'll say look going oh my god what they offer that I can't wait to get out of the car got to see what this person looks like yes or the 5th take you get it right I keep trying you know being there sooner or later sweetheart Yeah there are some but so anyway we owe we have a totally crammed full and that's the stuff we brought and then we went to Wal-Mart yes in beautiful blankety blank Virginia and spent over $500.00 at the Wal-Mart because you know she got the little microwave and every single toiletry other than that what she was traveling with we had just essentially had to buy everything and it was a lot of money it could have been smaller because listen I'm not poor I used to be I'm not poor at this point my life so I would look at it like the flashlight case needs a flashlight and I think case is dark but it went right exactly that's why I brought it in case it stuck. And I look at the $16.00 flashlight it was markedly better than the $12.00 flashlight and I lover and I wanted to be safe and it had a flashing things that she had like stick in somebody's face that have blighted I can so your daughter saw. I gather that flashlight out of the sun instead of the well no I went for a lot of lumens Schon so about the lumens you know about the luminance I don't plus you know if you can make it flash strobe it people in the dark they're blinded you can just run away from them so but then I'd say then I'd look at the you know what's another example a little drawer unit and I think that the 21 dollar one looks a little flimsy I think I'll get her the 25 dollar one and I just you know little indulgent and I wish you could check out 1st. And they could say to you you know with a time machine or something you can spend $563.00 because then I go back to $12.00 flashlight is fine honey those sheets 20 thread count it's good it's the very sturdy etc You could go backward but once you're in line you're kind of committed so we get that stuff in cram it in with the suitcase stuff and we show it to her dorm room and oh my God this is the school ran the movie and with incredible efficiency you're greeted by people cheering. And waving the school for example and waving into the parking garage where you park they whisk all the stuff out of your car they put it in big bins a couple of volunteers you go there you gotta get that car with the other driver get the car out of here go to the lot at the other end of the world at the but then that she she's whisked off to fill out a paperwork while we're still walk and then you hit the dorm a bunch of kids will be up the stairs of fent as well so we are getting something for the prices of modern college education yeah yeah yeah yeah thanks for the reminder and and so we get all our junk up into our room and roommates not there yet and so we pile it all under a bed in the floor and I'm looking around and I actually said there is no effing way you can fit all this stuff in your room all these clothes in fact I said I'm going to bring the extra suitcases back to the car now I think I should leave one for the stuff you're not going to be able to fit I underestimated woman power. Because they somehow stuffed not 6 pounds in a 5 pound bag but 8 and a half pounds I came back after walking the car back which took solid half hour. I came back and I just it was astonishing to me why do you need 5 pairs of jeans well they stashed them somewhere and there's just there's a miracle so I think you know it's going to be like the famous est room scene with the Marx Brothers somebody is going to open the door and everything's going to explode out into the hallway but so everything got put away and then anybody who's ever dropped a kid off in college knows this dance. So listen you'd kick us out any time you know you're at least parents like us we're not helicopter parents. And there was this ongoing negotiation slash trying to decide when we would actually leave because in fact I'm getting a little misty now thinking about it you know the big hugs and goodbye and good luck is going to be oh my god tearful and the rest of it especially you know it's our little one and my little girl in the rest of it so there's that you want to go to lunch oh yes go on she want to take a walk around campus maybe sure on yeah you know walk around the news finally it's like Ok we got to go you go in that's blubber fest at least for me and and and and we dropped her off. And and off she goes and then we texted 600 times over the next 3 days so you know it's not quite like a lot of these you know it's a modern thing yeah yeah we are pretty cell phone pretexting you'd have to call collect I would call collect Well Rollitt Yeah because it was back when long distance you know phone calls cost enough that you think about it twice but so when I would drop her off or you know to forget to tell the story of his when we were flying out it was a beautiful smooth flight everything was going fine then a couple of just little jiggles you know how it is with turbulence that. The plane just drops and. It was enough to get me to use a bad word out loud you know I didn't know that I uttered an oath as they say in the books yes I did but I want to. Actually I may have taken the Lord's name in vain come to think of it aloud I didn't shout it but it was out loud other people say f. Or anything like that I couldn't hear over the screams screams there are you there are yes shrieks of surprise and horror Yes And Judy who had her seat belt on but loosely rose up like 6 inches off her seat was restrained by her seat belt and bam back in the seat and it was very brief and that was like the only one but then I see one of the. Male air waitresses. Get a really shocked look on his face he runs the back of the plane and he runs back up looking pale he gets on the phone and he runs back and forth and then a lady gets up from 1st class who appeared to be a doctor. She was wearing the white lab coat and the 1st mask to mask Exactly. And and she runs a long story short an old fella he had to be 70 I think he was in the bathroom or something and he got his head sewn in the bathroom to be a bad place for he might have just been you know waiting for the bathroom or he was unleashed and the fact that it was only him was a miracle but luckily we were only about 15 minutes from landing and they had medical people come on but yeah he walked out with a big old bloody compress on his head and he looked to be Ok but oh man I can only imagine if you're out to see you to hit the ceiling they get hit hard to give you a free drink for that or anything but bash your head against a sitting Well I don't know maybe they give him a coupon for his next flight I was probably going to be in a long time I always take that have your seat belt on all times thing very loosely and whatever. Yeah see that's that's what happens you know there are rules on the. But he ended up being fine and there's. Nothing to say came out of nowhere happened suddenly and then we're back to being straight again. I don't think but like I said we're only about 15 minutes from Ok so I think they cleaned up because we've had drinks on the body had drinks on their tables out been a whole different deal oh yeah yeah yeah if he moves everybody's wearing their cocktails Yeah no didn't happen thank God I got mine down. You weren't lingering over it and Leslie. Unless the turbulence hits Well the air waitresses like one row back that drinks gone. I don't want to start a relationship with that I want to drink. Get me here. Now. Flying back yesterday of course flight gets delayed church for ever born in. This
